Everybody all over the world, from all walks of life, seems to love Pixar, and why wouldn’t they? Their films are full of great stories, strong world-building, and above all else, lovable characters. Unfortunately, not every character is a home run, and that’s true even for a studio with as good of a batting average as Pixar’s. Some characters are just plain unlikeable, be it for one reason or another, and that’s what we’re here to talk about today! After all, you can’t appreciate the great characters if you don’t also look at the bad ones, so let’s get this list started!

I do like Lotso as a villain a lot. He is unpleasant but his actions as a villain and his evilness makes the movie's story a lot more epic and impressive

Merida deserves a sequel with an actually interesting and adventurous premise to give her a chance at character growth. Its a shame that most people see her as the worst of the Disney Princesses. She's one of my favorites because I liked the fact she had actual character flaws. Sadly I doubt Disney/Pixar would risk making another movie about her.

Merida failed in all the places where Mulan succeeded. And when we think about it hard enough, we can see that without her redemption arc, she could've become worse than Mordu. I'm not sure she's going to get a sequel.

There’s actually a sequel novel called Bravely! It’s about Merida who loves her family but feels bored and feeling that every day’s the same. So then this wizard or guy or whatever shows up and gives her a challenge that that if she doesn’t change her family, DunBroch will fall.

In my opinion Mater is a good comedic relief character. And when you dig a bit deeper, you can see that he is clearly a loyal friend. I mean even when everyone in radiator Springs hated lightning at the beginning of the film, understandably so but still, Mater was the first one (and for a time the only one) to treat him civilly. And later in Cars 3 we see that Mater is willing to help lightning solve an issue that’s been bugging him, a situation that doesn’t even concern Mater, and The tow truck is willing to stay up all night if that’s what it takes.

I seriously disagree with Lotso,especially the said reason for placing him on the list.Yes,his evil demeanor isn't shown from the start,but that was to put his secret plan in function and it almost worked.He is easily one of the best Pixar villains imo.

Lotso does not deserve to be on this list. Most of the other characters have legitimate writing issues, but Lotso is a very well written twist on Woody's character arc in the previous movie. An old, tired toy letting the world beat him down into a bitter person when Woody is on the brink of being set aside as Andy goes to college is fantastic for theming and for character dynamics.

I agree, when he betrays the toys near the end and also when he put buzz and all the other toys in the classroom with younger kids it was a really good few scenes and honestly I think he was a brilliant villain and played the role well. Edit: Lotso’s backstory and the way he projects on the other toys that “your owner doesn’t like you” just because of his past was amazing.

Am I the only one who thinks Flik and Merida are overhated? The biggest problem with Flik is that he's part of a cliche nobody likes in its whole. And I personally prefer a heavily flawed character than one with no character at all.

I actually like Flik from A Bug's Life; the character from that film I find more deserving of a spot on this list is his love interest, Princess Atta, who was perfectly okay with letting Flik leave the colony even though she knew very well the expedition might cost him his life. She's the worst. Re: Brave -- I cut Merida some slack at first, because I was just that happy to see Pixar shine the spotlight on a female character at last, but now I'm fully aware of her flaws. The characters I have NOT changed my mind about are those horrible triplets. I hated them the first time I saw the movie, and I hate them still. HATE.

Plus, she didn't really believe in him getting help. She was more using Flik's idea as an excuse to get rid of him. Plus, when Flik’s lie was revealed, they act like Flik was the only one in the wrong, when Atta lied too.

Can you really blame Merida for feeling how she felt in the movie? Because her mother was making her do things that weren't even in her interests like Archery and sword fighting with her dad. And she didn't even want to be married to any of the sons of the clans that were enemies of her people. And her Mom barely asks her for what she wants

Making your own decisions as royalty is different than making decisions as an individual. Merida's journey is about changing her fate, but as a princess, her fate is intertwined with that of her entire kingdom. So, when she refuses to get married in such a flippant manner, she's not just risking her neck. She's risking the necks of everyone in her kingdom. Arranged marriages in those days would have primarily about securing political alliances and avoiding unnecessary wars. If you lived in Merida's kingdom and her refusal to get married caused a conflict to your home, would you be of the same opinion. Ariel's decisions hit differently because her running away doesn't affect her kingdom from a political aspect: Triton is still in power, and he has a multitude of daughters who could inherit the throne in his place. Her decisions are just attempts to satisfy her burning curiosity. There's also no indication of Ariel taking an interest in becoming a queen: The man she developed a crush on just happened to be a prince. If Merida had abdicated her throne instead, maybe the audience would have a different reaction.

Also, as I recall, Ariel is actually the youngest in her family while Merida is the oldest, meaning that Ariel likely has less of a claim to the throne than Merida, which also implies that she doesn't have the same obligations.

But you’re not supposed to like Lotso. I don’t think you’re really supposed to root for any of the Pixar villains. And just because you’re not supposed to like him doesn’t mean he’s a bad character. He’s supposed to be testable for all of his actions. Yes his backstory is deeply sad but it doesn’t change the fact that his selfishness left Big Baby and Chuckles without their owner or the fact that he turned Sunnyside into a prison. He’s not likable but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad character. He was supposed to be the final boss for this franchise. A tragic tale of what Woody and company are at risk of being.

Flik from bug's Life has the SINGLE BEST SCENE in any Pixar I have ever seen. Picture: The grasshoppers have taken over. There's a fire burning over to the right and the ants are off to the other side. Flik, beaten and bruised, starts talking passionately to Hopper almost shouting. "I see them year after YEAR in the food for themselves and for you. So who's the weak one?! It's YOU who need US. ...." Hopper, remembering that one thing he told his brother. -the ants getting suspicious, starting to talk- We're lot stronger than you think.... -pauses- and you know that, don't you? Yes, even better than the first 10 minutes of Up. Oh, the horror! Yes you heard right Hopper was absolutely terrifying villain and Flik was absolutely fearless. Not movie but that one scene was gold.

Disregarding any Pixar films I haven't seen yet (I.E.: Brave and Incredibles 2), I actually don't dislike any of the characters on this list, but I think you were especially too harsh on Lotso; because his cute façade, dark and troubled past, and overall lack of redeeming qualities make him my favorite villain in the Toy Story series, and I think Woody puts it best: *Woody:* "Wait, what about Daisy?" [Beat] *Lotso:* "I don't know what you're talking about." *Woody:* "Daisy? You used to do everything together?" *Lotso:* "Yeah, but then she threw us out." *Woody:* "No, she lost you!" *Lotso:* "SHE REPLACED US!!!" *Woody:* "She replaced *_you,_* and if *_you_* couldn't have her then *_no one_* could. You lied to Big Baby AND YOU'VE BEEN LYING EVER SINCE!!!" Everyone else here is pretty understandable though, _especially_ the characters from The Good Dinosaur, which, IMO, is Pixar's weakest film to date. (Although the years of troubled production it went through definitely didn't help)

For example, he was able to figure out Miles Axelrod was behind the crashes in the races when no one else could. That just proves that he can be smart when he wants to.

The worst is about Evelyn from Incredibles 2 is that she didn't even need to make superheros illegal because THEY ALREADY ARE! how the fuck does her plan make any goddamn sense? I haven't seen Toy Story 3, is Lotso meant to be a likable villain? I think the type of character you describe can make a very well written villain; in the Harry Potter franchise, Umbrage clearly fits into the same character type you describe, and this makes her a successfully written villain, we all hate her, we're supposed to hate her, and a truly despicable villain like that is compelling in a different way from the type of villain we are meant to enjoy watching.

I also think being relatable is part of why Merida is such a controversial character, but mainly in the sense that characters who live in a completely different timeline shouldn't be relatable. Arranged marriages were primarily politically driven, so by refusing her responsibilities as a princess, she's not just risking her neck, but that of her people as well. In this day and age, it would be more of an issue. Compare Merida's issues to Mulan's (the animated version, I haven't seen the live action), the latter has a theme of upholding the family honor, so every decision she makes affects her family as much as it does her. And while Disney wasn't known for its accurate cultural representations when "Mulan" was made, there used to be a time in Ancient China where your family would be punished for your actions. Mulan rebels against the norms of her culture by joining the war, but she also adheres to them because she's protecting her father.
