To be fair, people said the same thing about KZbinrs becoming musicians 10/12 years ago. It was laughable, but now so many you tubers branch out and do different things. The same happened with vine. Honestly, there were worst songs released in 2020 than Yummy. This leads me to believe that Bieber's anti-charisma and inability to project an era of cool is what sour people on the track and he still is calling a song "Yummy", which no man in their mid-20s should ever have in their vocabulary when describing cunnilingus. This leads to how songs like "One Time" doesn't work as an uncomfortable teen pop garbage with him using the word "Shawty", Bieber is not that good of a writer or a performer, he more or so fills time than crafting a unique or potent identity for himself. Even the best songs on "Purpose" feel more like ambient pieces than big pop smashes. The only reason I'm tolerant of "Yummy" is, at least it has something of a melody.

I think it's particularly because instantly from the synth notes at the beginning, the song takes you into the vibe. You instantly know what you're listening to, and the song, especially chorus are sooo catchy and fun to sing along to. I think it's been a while since we had a song with the complete package like "Blinding Lights" but this is also all just my opinion.

Tbh with the amount of promotion Sel was doing and the PR packages of custom ice creams i fr thought it was gonna be something rlly big that would be like the song of the year. Blackpink nor selena ever contributed anything to the writing, all they did was sing and do the music video. Blackpink also said in an interview that they bought the song off the market and wanted sel on it, I don't think he was trying to target ariana. It took 8 artists to write that song, all of which are extremely talented, he mostly just expected more from them. No wonder they didn't keep it for themselves and put it out on the market.
