Building an old and new GW kit is night and day. I was building the Ork Storm Boyz, Nobz and Lootas recently and they were so much fun to make as I swap, test out parts, poses, and just making unique models. And these were from 10+ years ago. Then I remember building the Eldar Dark Reapers which are "modern" GW kits in which each model is chopped up in CAD in 8 or 10 pieces EACH, and 5 models was absolute torture.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
Building orks has to be some of my best memories. Making stories for each character cobbled together from other kits, taking inspiration from the Conversion Corner articles in WD, and showing off my mad creations to my friends at my FLGS, what a time to be alive. Now we get this overproduced horror…
@Tartersauce101Ай бұрын
I wish GW made kits the old way, they were not only simpler to put together, they were waaaay more poseable not to mention easier to kit bash...why GW does it this way now I don't understand.

I'll tell you why they don't do it the old way, to counter third party bits makers essentially. The old Cadian kit let you swap our torsos, heads, arms and legs which meant 3rd party makers could make bits for you to 'sub in' very easily. Ever since GW lost the Chapterhouse Lawsuit the models have been getting progressively less and less kitbash friendly.

I dont think there's anything wrong with the minis themselves but I really hate how with newer kits you spend more time looking for parts on the busy disorganized sprue than actually building the mini. Hyper optimizing the space of the sprue really comes at the cost of the building experience and it sucks
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
Great comment, the best example of this is the old crypt ghoul box to the new crypt guard box. Same issue with hyper focus on optimizing space and spreading all the pieces around vs the old way of “this sprue is legs and heads, this one’s torso and arms, knock yourself out, you apes!”

Yeah, the newer GW miniatures are nice and detailed - but at some point it becomes too much detail. I'm also not sure I like the larger size models GW is going for these days. There's a certain charm to janky heroic scale models. GW models have become overdesigned and soulless by comparison if you ask me.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
I agree completely.
@TheSupporter76Ай бұрын
Tbh the only thing that irks me is the scale creep with the new foot knights. Even the price isn't as bad as it could be, considering it's just the cost of what two elite infantry boxes would be seven years ago.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
That’s true, I remember when the Empire Greatswords came out in boxes of 10 for $50, I was blown away. Put one of these guys next to a knight of the realm on horse and the scale creep is so evident.
@umbralobserverАй бұрын
Being a Bretonnians fan I really want to like this kit but much of it just looks dreadfully cartoonish - particularly in the way some of the helmets look. And to get a transfer sheet that's nothing but Brionne axes with a few fleurs is completely contrary to the individualism their heraldry is supposed to have. The only use I could honestly see for this kit is to spite GW by using these models in their most generic configurations for D&D games. The rest perhaps has some kitbashing potential.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
BRILLIANT! And I 10000000% agree on how dumb the transfer sheet is and how it flies in the face of the individualism of each knight of the realm being special and singular, rather than just one in a unit of identically painted weirdos in silly helmets.
@odinlindeberg4624Ай бұрын
Using them for D&D wouldn't really do much to "spite"GW, though. Ideally a majority of the playerbase would get out of the GW ecosystem and play other wargames like Bolt Action, Quar, Infinity, Frostgrave, Battletech and so on, but it's a difficult move to make.

Spares for kitbashing. Sword and board look fantastic. Designs that lend well to traditional bright bretonnian scheme. Still I find it baffling that some kits are so bad to put together. Look at the new Eldar guardians.

@Morendie91Ай бұрын
One of GWs big issues is trying to be so much "extra" with there new sculpts, tons of details, tons of bits, weird poses, bigger scales. Then we look at the older sets where the bodies and legs were all seperate but they were modular, you could just cut out all the pieces and not have to look at the instructions unless you wanted certain specific models/looks. Now they have to make each pose unique. Sure its cool but its annoying hobby wise especially if you are working on a huge army. This is a big reason I got into 3d printing, for example I got the new tyranids from the 10th edition box, and I just printed them all instead of assembling the ones I had. Lot of them came whole and even when in parts they were so much less work to assemble. Sometimes I would even just assemble them in the slicer and mass print them whole so soon as they are cured I put directly on the base. Hard to go from that to 20+ pieces per model.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
Yeah! Bigger and bigger more and more. The new Darkoath, was a perfect opportunity to just update the old Chaos Marauders, but they went Cities of Sigmar and made assembling each one (especially the horsemen) like putting together a gundam kit. I think many of us have bits boxes that are separated by torsos/legs/heads and there’s just no way to do that anymore. They’re all monopose grouped together to fit a certain way. Keep up the great work, love all you do.
@Choom89Ай бұрын
I do agree with legs+torso then arms and heads separate should be possible. If there are this many pieces they might as well do push fit.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
Exactly. The fact that the arm sockets are so difficult to fit the arms to and that the wrist glue points are so small for the great weapons really make this a turnoff. The sword and shield options are better, but the design of the minis overall are just not as good as they should be.

I find myself more and more going for model ranges from back in the day (see my entire metal mordian iron guard army) that are single piece models....glue to the base...done....
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
An entire metal guard army is a thing of beauty. Thank you for your years of viewership, my friend. I think it’s a combination of us getting older and the kits no longer making as much sense to assemble. Imagine if there were no instructions for these newer kits! What a time it was to build and assemble our minis when we were younger and our imaginations ran wild.

You definitely can't just throw modern GW kits together like you used to be able to, but the new way has lead to some really dynamic and cool looking miniatures. Take your time and pay close attention to the instructions and you'll be okay. The fact that the idea of trimming off a small amount of flash from a component annoys you suggests that you may not have been in the right frame of mind to attempt this.
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
That’s a good point. I may not have been in the best frame of mind to put these together. I think while I was assembling these I was also stuck in the rhythm of “old Bretonnian” model assembly, where everything was so easy in comparison. Im sure to new players this isn’t as jarring, as it aligns to the new way of their model designs.

I really like the look of the minis but it is a shame they suffer from scale creep and there are too many parts to assemble. For all the extra parts they seem to have reduced the variability in poses, I’m not really sure who they are designed to please or if it is just the cheapest way for them to be manufactured and perhaps combat recasters but it doesn’t seem like the consumer has been considered as much as they should have been No doubt once I have mine built up lots of these criticisms will be forgotten but in the meantime I’m doing other easier and quicker hobby projects such as painting up a 2000 point Vampire Count army of which I’m on track to have finished in three months (about 150 minis)

The old blood knight kit was the worst. So warped, you couldn't assemble them

The metal one? Sheesh, I didn’t know that. I always looked at the box in my local store and laughed at the $96 price tag.
@thedave3880Ай бұрын
I had the metal one back in the day and it was fine apart from some gap filling im assuming he means the failcast one @@WarbossTae
@WarbossTaeАй бұрын
Ahhhh. That’s good to know. If you think about it, you’re paying for like 5 metal cavalry heroes in one box, so $20 per isn’t a bad price. I miss the old metal feel. The fact that they released them in FAILCAST was like an insult I couldn’t abide.
@thedave3880Ай бұрын
@@WarbossTae failcast was a horrible decision and they were shockingly expensive but I got mine from a time when gw would give minis away (i know its now heresy) and I won them from a store painting competition way back in the day the weight of the unit on a movement tray was awesome though

There are a ton of bits and great weapons options on the sprues left over. Do you have any Bretonnian players in your area? Maybe you could work out a trade for some Chaos stuff, or find some bits on eBay. Good luck to you! Sounds like a fun project!

Haha they’re pretty rough. Especially the old metal lads. Gotta pin and green stuff those joins, for sure. I prefer these. Much more character, easier to build in resin, and the best of all the third party Ork kommando alternatives I’ve found: artelw.com/Skawt%60n%60Rekkon-Skwad-5-ladz-p139168289?aff=31
