The wrong way to improve your English listening skills

For beginners it's very useful to watch videos with subtitles and spoken english, because they'll be learning new words and how to pronounce it correctly. But if you are an intermediate english speaker and you're trying to improve your listening, watching videos with subs are not gonna be te best way to improve it though! PS: I'm a brazilian english learner and I say it because I've experienced it.

I'm not a fluent English speaker and I feel ashamed about it not because of this english but our so called judgmental society. English isn't any skill it's just a language but still people consider it as a big achievement like if you don't know English that means the person is illitrate. I try really very hard to speak English in front of my friends, teachers and of course in any important meeting. These things always bother me and I feel my confidence level is declining in a tremendous way. I know that English is important for any job interviews or any such things but what if a person has complete knowledge about his/her course but he/she gets rejected just because of not fluent English!

You are half right and half wrong. Because you do not know how to use subtiitles PROPERLY. If you watch dramas or movies with subtitles ON from the first time.. that's not going to be very helpful in the long run. You miss too many things with subtitle ON. BUT.. (not necessarily long ones..like movies) if you turn on subtitle when you watch it again, you may find it helpful. (talking about english learning, so why not seeing several times as a learner / student?). When you watch it again with subtitle ON, you will find many words, phrases, and expressions you didn't understand at first, more obvious and clear, that is the learning process. Later you will understand much better when you hear the same or similar expressions in any other situations WITHOUT subtitle. Just use them in a PROPER way.

If you want to improve by watching videos without subtitles, my recommendation is to pick an animated show to start with. Voice acting is usually much clearer, less sloppy, and timed better for listening than a live action show, especially a realistic one. Over time you may be able to move on to scripted live action shows or even unscripted reality tv or such, but this is just my recommendation for the starting point. I find it works well for me for my second language comprehension practice.

Shady & yes , it is , because you're not actually listening to the conversation but focusing more in the spoken words and in to write them as fast as possible and that is not natural to do . Writing the whole conversation in a piece of paperwork won't actually improve your listening skills because as time goes on you'll have got used to it which is bad in real life because you don't write everything someone's saying and read it , think about it. I would recommend you to just listen to the audios and write nothing down onto your paper sheet besides very important details and with time your listening skills will start to improve to the point that you don't need to write anything while listening to a conversation :) , at least this worked for me but I'd say this may work for many people , good luck

I forgot to mention that the activities must not require your attention. For example, exercising, riding a bus, walking. This way you can focus your attention on listening. You don't want to practice listening while working or reading a book because that's just hearing.

I totally disagree with this video. Watching videos in English with English "subtitles" (I believe that the correct term is transcription) was what made me able to improve my English in a year or even less, only having basic English knowledge like how to say hello, what's your name, etc. I didn't even seriously sit to study, I just watched a bunch of random videos everyday (again, with transcription), just for pleasure, and my English go wild, especially my listening, pronunciation and reading, I just need to improve my speaking and writing. Terrible video, I do agree that you should not depend on transcriptions and you should stop using them eventually, but in the beginning, transcriptions are going to be the thing that will let you not to need them anymore. People, if you want to improve your listening skills, I recommend to you to work on your pronunciation, being able to pronounce things will let you to identify those things when they are being said. With that, plus expanding your vocabulary, your listening will go wild. And if you want to made use of videos/audios with transcription to help you, then start with clean and clear audio, like podcasts, audiobooks, or any kinda of video made by a person with a clear pronunciation and good audio. Eventually, go for more "dirty" audio quality, like movies, street interviews, etc.

It's a scientific fact. I used to think like you, but it's proven that when we listen and read at the same time we *cannot* do both *unless* one is automated ie at such a high level that we don't need to give it any attention. So eg we can walk and talk at the same time. We can listen to our native language on the radio and wash dishes without missing a second of the audio. Not the same for second language unless your skills are already second nature. Listening and reading at the same time improves reading. This may improve comprehension but it won't improve *listening comprehension* . To actually physically improve listening you have to listen. ie you'll understand the message because you are relying on the writing to help fill in the gaps created by your weak listening skills. Whilst you are reading your brain is not paying attention to the audio. This is a scientific fact. So, how can reading and ignoring the audio improve your listening comprehension ? It can't. We get better at listening by listening. Listening and reading subtitles at the same time might help improve comprehension of a certain movie, or a youtube video, or a speech someone is giving, but it won't actually improve listening comprehension in your language of study. As one says, "To put it bluntly, research shows that we can’t multitask. We are biologically incapable of processing attention-rich inputs simultaneously."

That's right. I think listening and reading at the same time will solely help you reach the intermediate listening level. If you wish more improvement, you need to remove subtitles, or you're just simply advancing your reading. My suggestion is that instead of watching movie, watching a short video two times, with subtitles in your first try and then eliminate it.

Thank you a great deal for the video. I think it's awesome This is my opinion: learning language in general is all about learning communicating. So the video is absolutely right about the difference between listening and hearing. However, if one's aim is to improve listening, then I think it doesnt really help communicating. I personally think this way: when we talk, we do not listen to every detail that our partners are saying. instead, we HEAR the key words (people tend to stress on the things they want to express, so those are key words) and that makes a natural conversation.

Yeah, but not at all. I mean, listening is kinda easiest skill to boost your score in standard test (IELTS, TOFEL or such). But when applying in real conversation, like understanding of two native speakers talking is a frustration, as they usually use slang and local words and idioms.

In my opinion if you're beginner means you just started learning English by using movies then start with simple movies. Like movies for children that is animated movies. Because language used is simple. Also at beginning it's ok to use subtitles. But after watching enough movies try to watch movies without subtitles. That way you'll improve your English listening.

The information from this video is obvious, I'm a bit surprised it turned out to be smth new for so many people. My method is very simple: When I watch a series, at first I watch each episode without any subtitles trying to improve my listening skills, it's a bit boring and I get not much info. Then I watch the same episode with english subtitles in order not to lose the interest to the series itself and because I'm curious what was going on in that episode. Sometimes between these two actions I do some other things which are like listening-improving exersises for me. Very simple! And it works!

Exactly what I tell my students! If they watch with subtitles, it becomes a reading exercise, rather than a listening exercise. So what do i do? We watch very short films during the lessons, (up to 5 minutes) and I give them about 10-12 words from the video. As they listen, they have to put the words in the order they hear them. It's not easy, but over time, they "train" their ears in a similar way in which other people train their muscles. It takes time but it's absolutely worth it. Also, full-length movies are much too long and can be tiring. So I go for short films or videos of interest (there are plenty available)... something that they can watch over and over because they're short. Podcasts are also good, but films have one great advantage: you can see the actions and the expressions of the speakers. Students gradually learn to connect what they hear with what they see - similar to the way a baby learns to connect the words it hears with the actions it sees..

In my opinion, both methods are good... I'd say that watching movies was incredibly helpful to me, but listening to podcasts helped me a lot more. Not only coz they speak in a more natural way but also because you can get the message by their intonation and etc... you feel kinda connected, as you were there being part of it... nothing better than listening to things you're really interested in while you're doing something else but still focused on the conversation

Well, that's a rather radical approach.. There is an option. You can make subtitles really small and focus on listening, and when you don't understand what actors speak, you can read the text.

I started watching only English youtube 1 month ago. After 500 videos watched, I can say I understand native speakers with the most common accents(Northern American, British, Australian, accent of people from India, Russia)

This video might true if we know all words on the movie we watch. If the movie contains lots of new words, there is no way for listener to understand. In my point of view, we try to listen first then give it another try with subtitle to see how much we can understand, which part we don't get the story and figure out why we don't. Problem might be pronunciation, new words or perception. I am struggling with my listening skill too so I am happy to get more ideas to improve it.

Both methods actually may be useful, however, watching with subtitles improves vocabulary because we are able to read what we wouldn't normally understand but our listening skills don't improve that much. Still, it may be a good idea to improve your vocab first so later on you can catch more expressions while listening. The downside of just listening is that 80 % of new words may just whizz by your ear and your brain is just ok with it, especially in movies where they sometimes speak very fast. So you need to decide whether your goal is to improve vocabulary or listening and choose accordingly. Both are useful as subtitles have the same function as reading at the very least. It would always be good if everybody could just hear completely new words even in fast speech, but you would need a really good ear for that.

Having subtitles in your target language (japanese for me, but English in this case) absolutely helps with listening skills. And in fact it is better to use subs in the target language than to watch things raw (no subs). I've even read a paper which goes over this, but with spanish. Subs in your native language make learning the target language near impossible, no subs helps you improve a bit, and subs in your target language is the best way to consume content like shows and movies. I'm only like 40 seconds into this video, but this aggregious error annoyed the shit out of me. Edit: i will admit that if you are focusing solely on listening skills you *might* find no subs more helpful. However, your overall comprehension will improve if you properly watch with target language subtitles.

You can watch with subtitles but 2seconds after the sentence..Not before or in the same time. That is the best way because you will hear the voice and after that you will correct yourself if you have made a mistake or if you can not hear the words

The best way to improve your language with movies is to make the subtiteles latter 2 seconds, because when you listen you ll focouse on listenning and if you dont understand what you listen, then you ll have the chance to read what you listened. So you ll get more listening practice and understand the whole movie.

When I practice shadowing lessons, sometimes I hear the sound, look at the transcript, and read it by myself so it probably differs from the original sound. I'm not really listening and repeating. not gonna lie, I been watching movies and shows for years and by the day i learn something new. I keep the subtitles on for one reason, it helps me improve my vocabulary in this month alone i learned 31 words and this month ain´t over yet. and reading the subtitles helps me improve my sentence structure which is actually really useful for obvious reasons at the moment ik about 1700 words just 300 more and i´ll know as many as an average native speaker which makes me happy. I don´t know why i am even watching your videos because i already use most of these tricks, maybe i am just here to see if i can learn more to be fair i learned some new words from you as well when you made that pronunciation video (btw i know that i use the word ´i´ a lot in this comment but, i don´t know how to fix that)

You're not a native English speaker. There are many pronunciation mistakes in this video dude. Plus there's no doubt that watching movies is an ideal way to get fluent with the English sounds and sound like English (which you don't). It can't be said to be right or wrong, just appropriate or not.

Back then, when it wasn't possible for me to disable the subtitles from the english content I used to watch (TV shows included subtitles as default), I used to read the subtitles as fast as possible, look for a translation inside my head and hear what they were saying. As a final step I used to compare what I thought they would say with what they actually said. So I think subtitles by themselves are neither good nor bad. What you do with them is what makes the difference

A small addition to the idea. You can use subtitles in a related language which is unknown to you (say, French). Therefore, you can't grasp all the information from the subtitles, so you are forced to listen. But the subtitles are still there as a hint or a clue when the words are muffled or you're puzzled with the phrase.

I generally gain high score in the test with listening, and I can listen and understand really well in certain irl contexts. But forcing me to absorb the content of conversation between two native speakers is a challenging task.

yes I agree but for beginners listening is not easy to understand.if I read subtitles I can understand what about.and I learn new words.

This is not the wrong way and not a bad advice to learners. It just requires self-discipline. You're making a good point - hearing is not listening. However, using subtitles does not have to turn off your listening skills. It just requires a proper attitude from the learner. I went from my native subtitles to original subtitles and then to not using them at all and it worked. I wouldn't discourage this form of learning. Instead, I would teach the right way to approach this method. And above all this, I would underline that it is only one of many, many tools you can use to learn English on your own.

Thanks for your constructive argument on the subject! But your method and the one mentioned in this video are different. Your method involves watching movies without subtitles and require the user to watch movies with subtitles first. This works but like you said, requires a high level of self-discipline. An average person can't do this consistently.

Well, if you put it this way, then yes, it doesn't make sense as it wouldn't make sense to ride a bike with training wheels if the goal wasn't eventually to remove them. Maybe I wrongly assumed that the goal of the method you are describing is to eventually watch films without subtitles because that was my personal goal when I did it. Anyway, I still respectfully disagree with the statement that the method (well, at least the one I am describing) is wrong. It is demanding and as such is certainly not for everyone. But it is worth trying!

It is not a mistake, if you want to improve your listening just try to focus on what people are saying. Sometimes subtitles can be helpful...
