My favorite episode of the series is "Bloodline", in which Nightcrawler (one my favorite x-men in the comics, as well my favorite super hero, followed by Spider Man and Flash) discovers that Mystique is his mother. The interactions between Kurt and Mystique are very emotional and highlights Kurt kindness and compassion, always refusing to let hate corrupt him and still trying to reach the humanity in others, specially villains like Mystique. Nightcrawler may look like demon, but he has the soul of angel.

X-Men the animated series did Kurt and Hank (Nightcrawler and Beast) to absolute perfection. I loved Kurt's deep and abiding faith and how he leans on that to make it through tough times. And to the show's credit they didn't downplay or ignore it, they leaned into that showed him as the man of conviction and forgiveness he is. I also loved how they captured the tragic element of Hank McCoy's character. Hank is one of the great minds of his time, but because of his mutation he's basically ostracized. We really did get to see that and it was great, because that's part of what makes Beast so compelling.

100% agree. Serialized storytelling always works best for X-Men, since it allows more opportunity for character development for such a relatively large ensemble cast. With the movies, we really didn't know any of the characters except for Wolverine. Granted, I personally feel like Cyclops wasn't shown to be the rich, multifaceted character he is in the comics, and Jean Grey, arguably the most powerful member of the team, did little more than faint and scream Scott's name in TAS. However, the Phoenix and Dark Phoenix Sagas finally gave the characters the justice they were missing for much of the series. For me, we could skip the live action movies and just focus on quality X-Men animated series going forward, but I know that won't happen lol.

@You're under 19 don't argue It sounds to me like you should give them a re-watch yourself; the stories told in those episodes have so much depth I wasn't able to pick up on some things after re-watching them twice. Apart from that, the voice acting is phenomal, the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic, and there are a lot of iconic moments and especially dialogue and bits of visual storytelling that are worth studying, seriously. Now, Batman did have some continuity between episodes and you can notice some characters developing as the show continues, but Superman had a lot more and, for some reason, it feels a lot more fun to watch to me. It never quite reaches the same levels of complexity as Batman: TAS, because Superman (as much as they explore his character and Clark's) just doesn't have it, but maybe it's its vibe or the strong cast of secondary characters that make it way more entertaining but it just feels easier to enjoy. P.D. Completely agree on JL/JLU's positioning though.

Stan Lee apparently wanted to do an opening narration and end each episode with a "lesson" to be learned from it, which he had done throughout the Marvel cartoons in the 70s/80s (including X-Men's '89 pilot Pryde of the X-Men). I feel like passing on this was a smart idea, as it was better let the viewer determine each episode's meaning for themselves and to show them the respect of trusting them to follow the string of events without being hand held by a narrator. That and the creators even said that the show was more rooted in the Claremont run of the X-Men, and stylistically in Jim Lee's '90s X-Men revamp - Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's run on the X-Men was good and all, but it was never the gigantic property it is now until Claremont and Len Wein got involved. ALSO: This might be bold but I actually prefer the Rogue vs. Gladiator fight in the Trial by Combat in the Dark Phoenix saga over the Colossus vs. Gladiator fight of the comics. I don't know if its the that they both could fly that made the faceoff more epic, or the fact that Gladiator - and probably the viewer as well - underestimates Rogue to the point that its shocking how well she almost stalemates him. Rogue got a MAJOR upgrade in the Animated Series and I'm here for it.

Margaret Loesch was the person most responsible for bringing X-Men: TAS to Fox Kids under her tenure she pushed hard for it and also pushed for the linear storytelling.

Yeah, X-Men was just two months away from airing its 2nd season by the time people saw the first episode of Power Rangers. Sounds like a weird rumor that was accepted as true with zero fact-checking. Wouldn't be surprised if it was something Saban made up, tbh.

X-MEN: A little too cautious X-2: Hitting their stride X-Men The Last Stand: Tried to run in too many directions at once with it's shoe laces tied together and fell on its face... X-Men Origins Wolverine: It had its moments.. The Wolverine: Just confused and making up terrible characters X-Men First Class: Very creative and took risks that paid off with character development X- Men Days of Future Past: BRILLIANT X-Men Apocalypse: Sigh... Logan: Absolutely brutal and satisfyingly heartbreaking... X-Men Dark Phoenix: Didn't...even...bother... In all honesty for some fans like us that had been since the early 90's really couldn't be totally pleased. No gatekeeper here, just my thoughts...Bub.

That’s the one tricky spot with an X-Men movie plan is that a lot of what the X-Men is, is that long form character heavy serialized fiction, so for the MCU I don’t know how they could possibly try to satisfy that with movies given long production cycles and aging actors. Another challenge for the MCU version of the X-Men will be trying to get everyone to not just do “Wolverine and Friends” like Fox did and even when they did, Jackman’s Wolverine character-wise did not resemble Wolverine in the comics, so there’s a lot of work to be done with these characters in the MCU.

I remember watching The Phoenix Saga back in 96. Woo great 5 part episodes that well illustrated what happened in the comics. Arguably the best episodes in the X-MEN TAS.

Man this show was so good. Serialized stories were almost unheard of back then, they did it brilliantly. In fact I can only remember Batman TAS had some continuity and callbacks, and some GI Joe special episodes that were the exception (the Serpentor saga).

This show needs to be released on Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray. Just imagine the artwork for the covers. Plus it could even get a special box set for each series and limited edition steelbooks that have this cool embossing.

The animation could be a little wonky, and the dialog/delivery often hammy/cheesy (lots of chewing scenery), but it _worked_, most likely because of solid writing. So many thoughtful moments and pieces that didn’t try and talk down to its audience or dumb things down, which made the show great

The realization that Jim Shooter had is what the creators of Doctor Strange lacked, the dark Phoenix Saga is very similar to Wanda's capitulation, but the movie fails to make wanda atone for her crimes instead it tries to pass her of has a victim

The first two episodes and Dark Phoenix Saga were my favorites.

I would rank 'Graduation Day' as #1. The last season had some art style changes that some disagreed with but that didn't interfere with a tearful, heartfelt farewell to professor Charles Xavier, or the crisis of soul that makes Magneto throw away the chance to fight the war he's always called for. In general this is probably the best animated depiction of Magneto, as he's at his most sympathetic here and will team up with the X-Men whenever there's an enemy who directly threatens mutants as well as humans such as Apocalypse, Mr. Sinister or Master Mold.
@ShadowSonic22 жыл бұрын
But the entire setup of that episode was stupid. There's no explanation for how Gyrich got back with the government, how he convinced them to try another Mutant Control Bill and Xavier would never be stupid enough to let Gyrich within 100 feet of him.
@WhiteFangofWar2 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowSonic2 ...Have you MET the US government? Xavier isn't stupid, but he wants to trust people and didn't expect Gyrich to straight up try to murder him.

I agree. This was my favorite series as a child that got me into Marvel Comics in the first place. I was born in 1991 and got into it watching the re-runs on Fox Kids during the late 90s and early 2000s. My favorite arc was Beyond Good and Evil.

The funny thing to me with the movies is that they hired the SAME guy who wrote X-3 to write DarkPhoenix . So he HAD the chance to redeem himself...and still wet the bed
@IferGanomer2 жыл бұрын
The reason Cyclops was killed off early in X3 was due to James Marsden's prior commitment to Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer who directed the previous films of X-Men. Personally, I feel like killing him off instead of Xavier, would've worked better in the narrative.

Many thanks for the kind words, Brian. Making good comics stories work on TV was always a terrific challenge. It's gratifying to discover that some viewers got what we were trying to do. ERIC LEWALD, Showrunner, X-Men:TAS.

Dude you've just beautifully expressed why I've been so frustrated with the movies. As X-Men was among my top 3 favourite things to watch growing up when I heard about the movie that would be made I was beyond excited. But was disappointed & frustrated by how the amazing story of these heroes was told on the big screen. Would love to see an x-men movie that does the characters' stories & their bond justice in my lifetime.

My most favorite episode of the series was "Beauty & the Beast", where Hank McCoy treats a blind woman he had fallen in love with, Carly, facing against the brotherhood of humanity's persecution at the time, him curing her, but the brotherhood kidnapping her, and Beast/Hank just turning savage in fighting them, while in contrast Logan/wolverine uses his brains to hunt down the brotherhood. The bittersweet ending of Hank and Carly having to break apart despite loving one another, because of being unable to have a normal life due to human and mutant hostilities, it was just heartbreaking, especially the scene where Hank is enraged and in tears wishing he could be 'normal'.

I'll never forgive Fox for what they did with my sweet heart Rogue. She was such a badass in the cartoon. In the movies, not even close.
@ShadowSonic22 жыл бұрын
The thing is, Rogue doesn't need the Ms Marvel powers to be cool. The Rogue in "X-Men Evolution" didn't have those powers either and she was one of the best characters in the series.

I really love Sanctuary it is a good show that groups of people with well mean intentions can be corrupted
@ryankramer87792 жыл бұрын
Yes. Sanctuary was the episode that defined this iteration of Magneto for me. I like the Magneto from the movies, but something about the whole "Holocaust survivor turns genocidal" really rubs me the wrong way. Also, I have a massive urge to break Cortez's nose after the BS he pulled 😂
