On the display it keeps track of how much gas it’s used. If you use the scroller wheel on the right handle bar you can scroll though temp, gas and odo readings. You can reset it after every fill up and the low fuel light comes on with one gallon left. Also, the headers are titanium and that’s the reason why most exhaust manufacturers don’t care to make headers for it. - 2018 R1 owner.

Personally I think they have really messed up the fuelling in D Mode, I prefer C In all conditions to D Because it is more predictable and is smoother. If I ever flash mine I will be getting D Completely redone, it is useless as it is. But now that I am used to it, B Mode is my default all the time.

i tried all the modes on my 2020 r1. I simply ride in A mode all the time. Ive yet to ride it in the rain but C mode would be ok for that. Ive owned a 2008 r1 before with no riding modes like the newer ones so im used to it. I started riding in C and within a mile i changed it to B at the first red light. Then for my 2nd ride i realized A is not really unrideably powerful. Its just the normal engine mode..not anymore powerful than any other year or liter bike. Its simply a machine and it gives what you tell it to do.

I have an 05 r1 and it is substantially bigger than the more modern models. I honestly prefer the 04-06 models though. Just pure raw power. No stupid tech to mess you up. You don't rely on modes for your power. You become one with the bike. What you input, is what it outputs. Nothing like it. I totally understand the need for certain tech at the track, but i don't race mine in any shape way or form. I also feel like the tech they put in there is geared for allowing a newer rider to get into something like this, without having the necessary skills, as the low power modes aid in safety in the case of a mistake. I've seen so many new riders with the newer R1s and other liter bikes that end up wrecking because they accidentally switched modes and looped themselves into infinity. I have nothing but mad respect for the power this bike offers, just personally prefer the older model look and raw feel.

And also the ride by wire throttle system...this cables coming off the grip...much like the newer zx10r...the cables go to a type of servo which reads how much throttle your giving it ....the computer then takes that info and translates it to the amount that the computer wants to open the throttle bodies....believe it or not the bike is de-tuned from what its actually capable of due to euro 4 emission standards...and that electronic throttle system is one of the ways that they do it....for instance .....at 5k rpm you may be giving it 50% throttle but the way the bike is tuned stock it may only be giving you 35% of the 50% that your telling it to give you......its wonky as hell ...but the bike is capable of way more ...and if its tuned right it will come alive!!

Yeah my 2020 r1 is a bit wacky on the throttle. Yanky and torquey. And low rpms from a start it feels like you are starting from a stop in like 5th gear. It does that classic too low of a speed for the gear stutter. I too blame it on the magnetic throttle as opposed to a cable. Its strange and requires a total relearning of throttle control.

Yamaha does tend to recycle the parts bin. My 2009 Yamaha FZ6R has the same turn signals that they're using today. That's one of the reasons why I went with the Kawasaki Z900 over the Yamaha MT-09. I realized that soon after buying the MT-09 I'd end up having to spend around $2000 just to get it the way I wanted compared to the Z900 where I'd only change a few things. I may even keep the stock exhaust.

karl kukk my first bike was a 30 year old Suzuki GS1100EZ. KING OF THE SUPERBIKES. Absolutely terrible first bike. I was also 30 when I picked it up. It had a fuel gauge, AND self canceling turn signals. The fuel gauge was WILDLY inaccurate. Sport bike tanks have weird contours that don’t easily resolve into a float level system that accurately indicates remaining fuel. The best, and most common way of estimating range, is to keep accurate records of your fill ups. Regardless of the level indicated in the gauge, or lack there of, your personal riding habits are going to dictate your fill ups.

Nice vid. Unfortunately it's hard to resist for amateurs like me to chime in. I really wanted to like the R1 but after a good long test ride I decided to stick with my 2010 R6. The R1 felt like an old man compared to my R6. Sure it would smoke the R6 in a line but the R1 felt lazy in the corners, the front brake felt weak, and as expected the engine wasn't as smooth. And don't even get me started on the electronics. They may appeal to the iPad fan but the electronic nannies are pointless even for an intermediate rider. Yamaha could have used that part of the budget on better hardware. I get your fuel gauge complaint for a street bike but if costs have to be cut that's not a bad choice. A trip meter on the street is just as accurate and a fuel gauge is pointless on a track. Just an fyi, the "one" tank bolt isn't a tank bolt. It holds the plastic cover in front of the tank which is a finishing piece with no structural purpose. The tank is secured to the frame with pretty substantial bolts that are hidden.

It's only been the last few years OEMs have put fuel gauges on sport bikes, and only the 1000's. It's still more common to have a reserve light lol.

I don't think I've ever rode a bike with a fuel gauge. I feel lucky if I get a light.

My first bike was a ninja 300. It had one. I think a lot of the kawasaki series do. Not sure aside from the 300. But yes, the overwhelming majority do not have one

My Yamaha Warrior 1700pc has no fuel gauge either, just a low fuel light....

I disagree with you saying its small and lightweight. My 2020 r1 feels taller, larger, and significantly heavier than my 2008 r1 i had before it. Im my opinion its one of the heaviest bikes ive ever rode. Even compared to cruisers. I blame that mostly on the fact its so tall that its hard to flat foot it. So you dont get a lot of foot on the ground when backing it out of a garage etc. Which gives an illusion its hard to move. But objectively its heavier than previous years back. And as for the brakes they are not very good. Yamaha yzf series have notoriously shit wooden brakes. Every professional agrees with that basically.

All modern motorcycles should have fuel gauge or range, no excuses. It is just programming in the electronics these days. Btw, my R3 has a fuel gauge.

Never underestimate yamaha brakes yamaha once had 6pot callipers but they made them smaller because they where way better then needed so made m smaller for less unsprung weight. And if you gonna look most Yamaha bikes dont have things like brembos because they make their own that work better and are cheaper then most

You are the ONLY person who praises Yamaha for their Brakes...I've seen tons of reviewers and owners complain about braking.

Im surprised combined brakes arnt standard on all road bikes as part of the ABS by now, seems it would be a huge safety improvement.
@johnc89104 жыл бұрын
Combined braking depends on how well the factory did it. Sometimes it's done so well you don't notice. OTOH, some bikes leave you wondering how to deactivate it. Judging by my FJR, Yamaha got it right.

It baffles my brain why the R1 doesn't have a fuel gage or cruise control like the MT-10 has because majority of the customers that buy an R1 are people that will ride them on the street so what gives Yamaha? It's not hard to code one into the computer right? I mean the MT-10 has the same engine and computer software just slightly different so it wouldn't be hard to integrate the two systems into 1 awesome system that the MT-10 can also have.

Yamaha is smart enough to not waste money on a lever that over half of riders will swap out for shorter ones in the first month anyway. Why waste R&D on something aftermarket companies will ultimately replace almost immediately?
