Bali’s natural beauty and rich culture have made it a tourist magnet but since COVID19, the island is struggling to stay afloat. Locals are questioning their dependence on tourism and the over-development it has unleashed.
Marcello and the lifeguards of Kuta Beach rise bright and early for their morning meeting and surf sprints. But they know it’s going to be a quiet day. While the iconic beach normally attracts 50 000 visitors a day from around the world, today the head lifeguard expects only 50 people.
“Nobody makes a life on the beach", says Marcello. “People who sell massage, or merchandise on the beach…I heard they all go back home to their village. It’s a very sad situation."
It’s a common story across the island, even in its remotest corners.
Off Bali’s east coast on the small island of Ceningan, Wayan lost his job at a hotel, and had to return to farming seaweed with his family. It’s the same story across Ceningan.
“Before we had 100 per cent tourism. Now 80 or 90 percent they are doing seaweed farms”, says Wayan who’s had to cop a 75% pay cut. “We had no choice but to return to nature."
But some Balinese see the crisis as an opportunity.
“This is a wake-up call for all of us”, says Christia, a young businesswoman. “We realized that we cannot just depend on one industry.”
In this visually stunning story, reporter and cameraman Matt Davis travels around Bali and discovers an island in the midst of some serious soul searching.
He meets locals who are questioning the unhinged development that’s accompanied the tourist boom and who want to chart a different course for the future.
“Bali tourism industry is based on two things, nature and culture", says rock star Robi Gede, “and we cannot sacrifice them”.
Politicians and businesspeople want to fix the congestion, pollution and rubbish problems and encourage a different type of tourism. One that’s sustainable and benefits locals more.
“I think it's a good time for reflection this year”, says Christia, “Go back to loving our island and make sure that people don't abuse our island as well.”
“We hope that when the tourists come back, they are coming with a good energy, they are not littering, with more respect for the local rules”, says Marcello. “Come with a good vibe.”

It’s no surprise when he said money come to Bali but go out of the island. When I visit Bali I prefer to stay in villa owned by Balinese to support their local community. This happens after I stayed in villa owned by foreigners who paid their staff just minimum income while we paid $400 per day to stay. The western/city mentality need to be changed. Only make business who bring benefit to the island and its people. How about make the investor build a school for each 5star hotel built in the island. And stop selling the rice fields for villa🙏🏼

the sad thing is, many hotels, discotic, bar or whatever busnise that has something to do with tourists refuse hire balinese people's because bali culture demand it's people's to take a lot day off. they're forced to give up the very way of life that preserve balinese culture and the very same culture that hold its peoples united all these times.

I went to Bali in 2019 with friends, we enjoyed many things except one major issue... the island was full of litter, easily spotted on the beaches. The amount of rubbish left by tourists and even locals on the beaches was shocking. I believe that single use plastics and bags needs to be banned in Bali and neighboring islands.

they've been banned since 2019, but to answer your statement, the trash isn't neccessarily left behind by tourists or locals, some of the trash that washes up on the beach is actually because of the current which brings trash from other neighboring islands and countries that don't have rules and regulations in place to stop their own issues, which ends up affecting us.

Bali was only way too busy with tourists in the south and southwest especially. All the rest was still perfectly fine. Bali is a pretty big island and it was always very well possible to avoid the masses. Basically all you had to do after landing was to not get stuck in Kuta / Seminyak / Canggu area. I often stayed in Sanur which was already a lot better and if that was still too busy any trip further north easily fixed that. :)

I am heartened to see that the local touristm people are focusing on the future of Bali, but the message has not reached here, in the South-East end of the island. Also, at the moment there are plenty of volunteers to help clean up. But that's only temporary because people have no jobs. But when Bali opens up again and everybody gets back to work, there will be no-one to clean up. So, as part of the planning for the future, the local authorities should think about some way to get money from the foreign investors. That money can then go into a 'cleaning and infrastructure fund'. It's good business to beautify the area, otherwise it will deteriorate.

Tourism is not the problem, it is the short-sightedness of the Balinese government. With the immense tourism money that has been coming in year after year after year, the government should have had a plan I'm using the money to build up an infrastructure that they have never had. Just like someone that wins a big lottery amount and then just blows it all and ends up right back where they were basically. The tourists will come back eventually and when they do this should be the plan. Look to what Norway has done with their nest egg mentality which keeps a huge sum of money now that cannot be touched. Interest on the money he is invested in the country's future. And any new industries that move in Norway is required to own 60%, a controlling portion, so the cash flow is always in the direction of advancing Norway.

First time I came to Indonesia in 1980 people said to me that I had to go to Bali before it would be ruined by tourism. Then I went on holiday in around 1985. I liked it. About 8 years later I went again with my ex-wife and daughter. It was still ok. After that it took about 20 years before I went again in 2015 when a friend had his wedding there. That was where I was disappointed in what grew over the years and I decided to never go back to Bali. I remembered the road to Ubud being a nice road with ricefields. In 2015 however the road changed. Shops everywhere, selling woodworks to tourists. Everything natural was destroyed. Then in Ubud I saw tourists walking around the ricefields. I understand that people want to make money and have a better life. But it all came to a cost. The food in Bali was adapted to the tourist's taste, nature was destroyed, pollution and what all not. Now after and during the pandemic Bali and many other places in the world are recovering... I wished it would stay that way, but I doubt it.. But I see that people are doing something about it and that enjoys me greatly. Rivers should not be dumps for trash. They are the vains that should bring life not death. Plastics should be forbidden. There are already good alternatives that decompose after time and not after hundreds of years.

By the time when it take shape and waste became a problem, there isn't space for those infrastructures. Evicting residents to make space will be unpopular, unless of course they are compensated handsomely. It will be a very costly and disruptive project and honestly nobody know will tourist continue to flock here during construction or after. As local government you can let the status quo remain and continue to enjoy the benefits or invest and maybe ruin the secret sauce.

I visited Bali im 1959 with my father and sisters. What a shock to see it today. The Denpaser Hotel used generators. There were 4 cars on the island. The king of Ubud was still alive. President Sakarno kept Bali private allowing few tourists on the island. They had a religious festival, Hindu, for 3 days with feasting and performing parts of the Ramayana. The story was performed most of the day in front of a temple in Ubud. At night the scene was lit by fire and torches. The music was performed by a gamalan. We had to wear Balinese sarongs to attend. The impact of standing bare footed in the throng watching this religious tale in the dark, with musicians and dancers, sometimes in a trance, deeply intwined in this love story, especially when Hanaman, the monkey king & his followers performed the Kacak dance, will always symbolize the spirit of Bali to me. Young boys carrying their flags to lead their ducks to their families rice paddies, so they could eat the bugs and chase off other creatures that might attact the rice plants. Boys offering flowers to girls to put behind an ear; yes or no. That was the spirit so wonderful of Bali.

I wish the government would actually pay a serious attention on regulations in this regard. I am so grateful that there are still non governmental organizations doing such great jobs and have good programs here in Indonesia And yes the way i have to pay based on the amount of my trash here in Bali is not cool. Ban all impott to Bali of all plastic package food. And make Bali, Fully Traditional Bali. Like it was 200y ago. Zero plastic package food. And put on streets patrol wardens to issu big fine for dropping any even smallest peace of paper on the floor. In UK you get fine for dropping cigarettes, gum, or any rubbish even size of a finger on the ground. 100£ fine. Make 1,000$ fine in Bali for dropping any rubbish. It works in UK.

I am Canadian and have traveled throughout South East Asia. My journeys have taken me From Sri Lanka to Northern Myannmar to Laos & Thailand in the Golden triangle. i have traveled by boat from Siam Riep to Phnom Penh . Toured the jungles & temples that surround Chang Mi as well as the beautiful beaches of the Southern Thai islands. Koh Lipe was a paradise! The train from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur, or reverse, is my favorite method of transport to witness the beauty of the Malaysian peninsula. I can't remember how many Ringit the trip costs but it was under $20CAD. Loved it so much I have taken 3 friends from Canada & an Aussie to share it with :) Singapore & Ho Chi Minh City are to of my favorite cities for dining. I have Been to Fiji and sailed the Yasawa Islands and then on to Vanuatu. 3x's to Australia. I love different sights and exploring cultures & customs of far away lands. I have been very lucky and blessed to have seen so much. In 2013 I traveled to Bali for a 1month visit. I left after 10 days. It was ridiculously crowded. Dirty. The beaches around the island had all been stripped of sand because the coral reef breaks had been ground into dust to build hotels for people to come and enjoy the beach. People went out of their way to nickel and dime tourists. Hotels with hidden fees or bars that padded the bills. I am used to travel scams & accept them. I am well versed in how to avoid or at least mitigate the effects. Bali was different. The pettiness and smug entitlement that seemed to accompany the grifts was palpable. Maybe it was my perception but I never felt as taken advantage of anywhere else as Bali. It was dirty. Trash strewn along the entire highway that rings the island. The few beaches that had sand were ridiculously crowded. The beaches sans sand were spacious but still the never ending parade of hawkers peddling their wares destroyed any moments of peace while trying to catch some sun on the uncomfortable rocky beach. II was to be there for 30 days and left after 10. I hopped a ferry to Lombok. It was amazing. Like Bali 20 years earlier I was told by the hostess of my new cheaper cleaner quieter accommodations. Bali was and still is the only place I felt like it was too much of a let down to stay. I tried. But so glad I left. The one caveat is the street food. Suckling pig or tempe and fragrant soups were sublime. I can still smell and almost taste it even after 8 years. Hopefully I can give Bali a 2nd chance. I love that they are cleaning and rethinking tourism. Hopefully the scams don't balloon to recoup the losses of the pandemic. Peace :)

The rubbish isn't being caused by tourists. I have been around Sumatra, Java and Bali and it is the same problem all over Indonesia. Locals do not think twice about littering to the point that if I ever dropped some waste accidentally on the ground and picked it back up local friends would smile at me like "why are you picking it up?" The most common solution for managing waste there seems to be lighting a bonfire (yes that includes plastic waste).

I have been in Bali for the past 12 months and every single day I witness locals toss plastic on the ground or in the ocean. Anyone who is blaming tourists hasn’t seen very much of Indonesia because I promise you that the trash is much worse in the places with no tourism at all. Farmers, fisherman, small kids and old ladies on every island I have visited litter without a second thought. It’s a cultural and educational problem and has zero to do with tourism.
