One crazy part I want to point out is people on MSNBC (hosts and govt stooges as guests) were like, "this is not how you protest". which is A) Preposterous because the students were protesting peacefully and are organized very professionally. B) So, according to American govt. & media, if you don't "protest" how they want you to, you are doing it wrong. Basically, "our way or the highway" shit. Isn't that authoritarian? Also, at Charlottesville in 2017, cops did not intervene at all. But, heavens forbid if some kids sit on a lawn and protest a genocide. Thank you for this video and giving out a fair take.

I work in higher ed. This institution put out a statement after students occupied the student union, and literally only amplified the voice the one WHITE MALE student that complained about the disruption to "his studies". They have ignored the protestors and their demands, and called them criminals. FYI this is an HSI and MSI institution, therefore students in the protest are mostly brown, including Palestinians. We who work in higher ed, are not okay. I got faculty friends being threatened by their respective institutions that if they show up to the encampments they risk getting fired. Some of us will pay the price of liberation, but we must demand it. Thank you for this video.
@Birbface
@Birbface Ай бұрын
might be the same in the US but higher ed makes most of its money off international students. Presumably unless the higher ed institutions are supremely ethically principled and expect the hit they're worried students and financiers of students (families) won't come to the universities because their studies will be disrupted, the university's ethics are unprincipled, and they allow support for a widely condemned organisation from a country most would prefer had been absorbed into the occupying state. If this thing turns around, you can bet the university would then be delighted to showcase how morally upstanding their student body is.

With the advent of "free speech spaces" and subsequent slow elimination of those spaces, moving them to the edges of campuses or even functionally off campus... I don't know if the same thing was happening across the country, but it certainly felt at the time like it was intentional and planned to try to create an infrastructure that allowed for stricter control of intelligent young people and to criminalize their tendency to dissent in this way.

i graduated last year from columbia and i’m back home. i’m so proud of my friends who are standing strong and enduring the terrorism president shafik is enabling when this should be a celebratory time drawing close to graduation. that administration never cared about our mental health to begin with - with mental health services being backed up and academic support was dependent on how compassionate your professor was. there are students who have lost loved ones from this genocide and now them and those of us who condemn genocide are being assaulted by the nypd on behalf of the administration. that’s what true unsafety feels like. when you’re a victim of a chemical attack on campus and your own administration does not reach out to you when you’re in the hospital. but it’s nothing compared to whole families being annihilated in their homeland and children dying, hospitals being bombed in gaza. but these students here have their lives and a campus to walk on, which you can’t say for their counterparts in gaza. it’s truly a mindfuck for a lot of us. especially with those having to continue with coursework while seeing the president of your own country defend the administration who threw your belongings on the street and called the police on you. the palestinians are facing a genocide and the students who are protesting it are facing a mental and physical health crisis. and it’s all being politicized before their eyes. but we’ve seen this before. we know the history. and it’s that history of mass protest and the palestinian people themselves that are why we will never be silent

As someone who lives on a campus where an encampment has been made, most students are in favor of it (there was a school wide walk out) and think that our administration has been intentionally misleading about what is happening. All of the people I've talked to apart of the encampments have been kind to me and helped me when I needed it. They were treated terribly by law enforcement and painted as a security issue when they have never taken any other "security issue" seriously. It's so surreal to see in person how people in power will lie straight to your face about what is happening in your own area.

I’m only 16 years old and finding my place in the world, but I know I want to help others and advocate for the end of human suffering even if my fear of crowds and loud noise stops me from attending traditional protests. graduated from Dartmouth less than a year ago and today, the state military police showed up 3 hours into the peaceful campus protest/encampment in full riot gear to mass arrest students, journalists, and faculty. The "law" they used to arrest them was that they are not allowed to set up tents. I really feel like there is an intersection here between the persecution and marginalization of homeless people and the repression against protestors. They basically already made it illegal to be outside and choose to enforce it and brutalize student protesters whenever their speech isn't convenient to them or their bottom line

Thank you for pointing out there are other ways to support a movement than being on the frontlines of protesting. Often time we on the left forget about logistics, that people may not be as plugged in, or that upstream decisions actually impact whats happening now. My grandfather was an activist that taught me movements must happen on many fronts or else theyll fail. And I think that's hella important as we watch college student get wrecked by police forces. Support comes in many ways, whether directly visible or not.

Its so hard to not hate human society, but then i remember that we eventually got rid of kings, so i do have hope. Its just so hard sometimes, man. Living in a small town in sweden where casual bigotry is litterally everywhere i feel so isolated and it feels like its either complete isolation or "not commenting" to the bigotry when it presents itself. I have this extremely privilaged White "friend" who says the n word sometimes to be "funny" and I want so badely to yell at him everytime he does, but i dont, and I hate myself for it. Why cant People just actually get that there are complete, other People that exist? Why must we invent lines in the landmasses that control who is what and what who can do? I hate that we live in a system where the greediest and most self centered floates to the top. But at the same time that fills me with so much hope seeing all these protesters and the indommidable human sprit shine through in such a system. Imagine what were Capble in a system that REWARDS the ones who take care of others? A system where eachother is the ultimate goal. Thats a big part of what keeps me going honestly.

Sociopolitical division at every turn.) 2.) The U.S. police is heavily militarized, and the armed forces could be called by the government to crush people. Essentially too few would rise up, and be killed quickly a very violent police force utilized by our government. People don't realize we are like one bad president or incident away from just being like Russia or China.

Hi FD, longtime fan love your work. Thanks so much for making this video it means so much. I've been at the University of Florida encampment for days organizing and this video replenished a lot of my hope. As far as encampments go it's a very safe and low-key one and we've been continuous for 11 days, we had nine people arrested the other day but beyond that we are not getting teargassed or anything which is nice. I agree about the general ickyness of politics as content, but honestly I think your perspective and wisdom is so important that it would be tragic in my opinion if you let that stop you from making more political content. I have found so many of your videos so useful and informative and you cite resources which help to gain a deeper understanding beyond what is already an amazing video. I totally feel you on being worried about your own personal safety making them, that is obviously your call. Also that last point you made about not being on the cutting edge of theory I think is actually a positive. It is such an important task to distill theory and information in a way that is palatable to a million people like in your f**k the police video. what my brain instantly goes to is when people say Bill Nye and NDG aren't doing "real science". that might be true, but they have made me care more about science than the 9999th journal article on some astrophysics topic just by communicating these ideas in an enjoyable and palatable manner.

Chilean here. I was a College student during 2011, a mythical era of student mobilizations. See, in my country, high schoolers and college students going on strikes and occupying school buildings isn't so much a strategy... it's a season on the calendar. It's so commonplace that our baton-happy police don't even bother to brutalize them unless they're outside of the campuses. There are pros and cons to our protest strategy but one thing I'm sure about is that the deans of our Universities would be thrilled, positively elated if the protests took the form of a civilized encampment on the gardens and open spaces of the Unis: "You mean to tell me the students can be politically active without causing full cancellation of all activities? Bring it on, make sure you clean up afterward!". MOREOVER, it is the very Deans who will raise HELL if the cops enter the Campuses to brutalize students, a big political NO-NO resulting from the trauma of the Dictatorship. What these gringo Deans have done with their stupidity is... reawaken the mobilization power of Uni students. The chose poorly.

We raised those kids telling that it's important to be good people and care about their fellow humans, and how human life is so important, and now people are surprised they're actually practicing this? We constantly give young people conflicting information but thankfully, the youth of today is smarter and more educated than the generations before them, thanks to the advent of the internet and how it has democratized information. VCU (VA Commonwealth University)’s protest was about a day or two ago and it was particularly bad. Sirens were going off for a while. Campus police, RPD AND Virginia State Troopers were on the scene in riot gear, clearly agitating roughing up peaceful protestors. School tried to use the wack ass “loitering on school property” excuse, like Glenn Youngkin didn’t just condemn this a few days before. Since the university is near the Capitol, he clearly was trying to do damage control and make an example out of them. I unfortunately couldn’t attend that day, but from the news updates and folks I know who did attend, it reminded me of the 2020 protests we had here at the Robert Lee monument, and how nasty RPD was then. They’re getting scared that us younger folks aren’t taking this, and we aren’t ignorant enough to believe the lies they’re spewing on this. Social media played a huge role in showing us the actual truth of what’s happening in Gaza, and they can’t handle it. I’m worried about the safety of those who are attending, and the ones who are taking the risk and standing up for what’s right, and particularly worried for Black and Brown supporters.
