They had to do what they could without relying on a season 2, which is never guaranteed. Everyone wanted Toguro vs Yusuke. But there's no way they could do everything and get to the Dark Tournament in one season. I appreciate the work they did to condense the story.

*Gasp* Someone with reasonable expectations. I do agree in a perfect world they should not have adapted as far as they went, that it did feel rushed (especially episode 3), and speaking of episode 3... *damn* did they disrespect Genkai. But overall, it was entertaining, incorporated a fair amount of the emotional beats, it looked great for the most part, and the characters were done justice even if a couple were half-baked (aside from Genkai).

If they can't do it right then don't do it at all. The reason why dark tournament works so well is because the earlier seasons laid so much ground work and established some great characters and gave them great arcs.

I think there was a lack of faith they'd be picked up for a second season so they rushed to the dark Tournament material. A lot of the cuts make sense. The original anime made cuts and additions that made a lot of sense. You don't need the revival or Genkai Tournament. You could also just skip Saint Beast as well. But they shouldn't have done the dark Tournament stuff. Just end it on Rescue Yukina and that'd be fine.

Totally agree with the sentiment that they lacked faith it would be picked up for the second season. Also agree with cutting the Genkai tournament if you had to but I think not having the Saint Beasts Arc was a mistake. That arc is Important in regards to some character development for Kuwabara, the dynamic between the four of them as it’s their first mission together and builds upon Yusukes relationship with Keiko. Granted I love the Saint Beasts Arc so I might be a bit bias lol

The first two episodes were legitimately sick, then halfway through the third it started just this huge down spiral that even good actors couldn't save. Yusuke and Kuwabara did excellently, though Hiei and Kurama really needed some work in the outfitting department because they often times looked insanely goofy, despite Yusuke and Kuwabara's outfits being done perfectly. The idea of splitting up the fight with Hiei into two halves is fine, and putting the Genkai training in between that is also not a bad idea because it turns Hiei into more of a threat. If they would've just upped it to six episodes, you could've had the Genkai Tournament, the training arc, and then the get back on Hiei happen in the span of an episode and a half, then fused the Saint Beasts into the rescue operation and end it off with the encounter that Yusuke and Kuwabara have with Toguro in the actual show. You set up for the Dark Tournament and don't ruin the potential for a future season, of which I don't see them having the ability to get into, since Chapter Black is such a dependent story on the struggles they've all gone through, of which have mostly been skipped. That said, it did so much wrong so fast that I am still having trouble recovering. Not tying in Hiei's eye to the Dragon of the Darkness Flame at all was baffling, then there's the Spirit Wave Orb, which I compare to Kami teaching Goku the Super Saiyan as a technique before his fight with Piccolo at the Worlds Martial Arts Tournament. It's such an important, and insanely pivotal, point of the story that really changes Yusuke from the Delinquent into the Hero, and is one of the strongest scene's in anime due to the undertones of him accepting himself with Puu, and it's just given away with what's essentially zero effort on behalf of Yusuke. There's also the Spirit Gun that he couldn't use immediately, which again is antithesis to the character they're portraying as him originally being able to use it no problem shows that he's a prodigy that needs so much work, both in the need to train and his need to tone down his ego and arrogance and think ahead, and overall just shows the misunderstanding of why the characters like each other and an unwillingness to build that comradery, that ultimately killed the shows potential.

Let's see, they butchered: -Yusuke's trials to earn his second chance. The live action handing it on a silver platter to yusuke completely misses the point of that trial -Yusuke's resurrection which is actually emotional in the anime - Yusuke not being able to use a spirit gun right away - Yusuke fighting a mini tournament to chase down rando. Thus earning his chance to train with genkai. - His training with genkai was also ruined - Completely skipping the four beasts arc which showed Yusuke's growth as spirit detective - Completely butchering the dark tournament, which btw is the best tournament on any fuccing shounen. - Yusuke's actor being wooden and trying to be edgy and stoic. Yusuke can be a goofball and funny most of the time. That's the part of his charm - Yusuke's final trial with genkai, butchered again. Like come on, yusuke overcoming that trial was him fully growing a spine and showing maturity -Since they fucced up the dark tournament arc, they couldn't show Toguro making Yusuke sh*t his pants. This was a very important scene cause it forces yusuke to grow up and train hard cause lives are at stake here. Plus this was the first time in his life he felt genuine fear and awe at someone's power. -They fucced up Hiei's background story. He lost his Harui stone which is another reason why he sought out Shigure for the jagan eye -Genkai demonstrating her mastery over the spirit waves is such a treat in the anime. The moment she showed her own spirit gun to yusuke was epic asf. Too bad, netflix butchered it too -They fucced up Toguro's final battle with genkai and yusuke's reaction over it. -Completely fuccing up that iconic scene where yusuke uses his new spirit gun as dedication to genkai Seriously, fucc this adaptation. Whoever is behind this abomination should get slapped for the lack of respect to the source material.

Kuwabara's growth throughout the anime and manga is also such an important motivation for Yusuke. He is also hyper sensitive to spirit sensitivity which adds a ton of depth to the character. When he forst gets his spirit sword it's really a big moment for the character and they did an ok job of adapting that but it still lacked a lot of the personality that the source material has. Eradicating the makai insects could have been it's own 5 episode ordeal

They gave Yusuke a "heart of gold." Granted, Yusuke isn't a total bastard, but he's not someone who goes around stopping bullies. Him saving the little boy was supposed to be a surprising moment despite his flaws. Genkai's character as a whole was terribly depicted. I could tell immediately from her weak posture that she was utterly out of character. She wouldn't hold her hands limply like a ghost, she would fold them behind her back and stand tall and imposing despite her height

The biggest problem I noticed with the Netflix version, is it tried to reinvent moments from the original series, but a lot of the moments weren't earned. Yusuke beating Tugoro, Genkai passing on the Spirit Wave to Yusuke, Tugoro killing Genkai, none of the characters' motives had enough time to be setup properly in the narrative, so it felt a little hollow. Like yeah, the moments were there, but it felt like they just didn't have as much overall narrative significance as they should have. The fights were good, the CG was sometimes messy but passable, and the acting and most of the casting was really solid, but the story was just too condensed and rushed. This should have been 2 or 3 seasons worth of story, not a single 5 episode season.

Legit, it's like they had a checklist of emotional cool scenes that people love to shoot and just made the series around that. But nothing is earned or emotional like it is in the anime. Like there was basically zero character development and definitely zero team building and the whole power structure is just like wtf etc. Like the actors were fine and most costumes were fine and sure the fight scenes they shot were cool. But like if you're going to do a live action could you do it right? Like if they had to change stuff fine but they still could've done something for Yusuke to earn being Genkai's apprentice and then after finishing the stolen items arc they could've done some sort of team building thing to represent maze castle and then end on Yukina arc with post credits of Toguro being alive and setting up for some version of the dark tournament. But this was just a rushed mess that looked okay. I'd rather it be better thought out and set up but look kinda bad personally. Than hey that looked good but i feel nothing and am confused

@@lamenoise8158 I meant character arcs. Yusuke never learned any lesson, and the heroes journey was never completed. Even his relationship with Kuwabara arguably one of the most integral friendships in anime had the literal equivalence to Tommy Weiseaus The Room sequence after Chris R gets taken down and he just looks down at Denny like "Let's go eat huh?" Genkai who trained her whole life and decided she wanted a successor literally spends 30 days with two random high school kids, and because Yusuke got his shit together after TWO WEEKS of being a fucking idiot (mostly off camera) she decided that he was perfect, and he needs the spirit wave orb. PS. Her speech about letting others in, and accepting you're not king shit is nixed for two seconds of "btw Toguro killed genkai and that's hilarious right brother?" followed by Yusuke and Kuwabara looking like someone told them their Grandmas friend died. They gave you all the pay off with none of the hard work. I don't think we needed to flesh out the world by any means, but we needed to see the characters struggle/grow appropriately. It's not about set pieces, and costumes... it's about seeing growth in others. That is literally the theme of shonen anime especially YYH. I highly recommend the youtube channel savage books for tips on writing, and god help me of all people Dan Harmons speech about the heroes journey. Both of these can help anyone get an easy understanding of what it takes to write a good series. In short.... I'm saying they effectively skipped story beats altogether to make this series, and while it looks damn good, and the actors crushed it... they absolutely missed the mark. Keep in mind I am still saying it's 3/5. It is the perfect middle ground from being great vs being absolute horse shit.

They needed more episodes, at least 12 imo (hour long eps) to cover the Genkai training *including fighting Rando), The Beasts of Maze Castle, then the Rescue of Hiei's sister. They could have ended it with Yusuke being convinced to enter the Dark Tournament, then end season one. Season two could have been solely based on the Dark Tournament alone. Other than that, the casting, set design, fight choreography and dialogue were all on point. They should have taken pointers from the recent One Piece live action adaptation. They did a surprisingly great job on that imo.

Yu Yu was the introduction to anime for me, and so many others. So tired of these people trying to be successful with there live action bull shit. None are going to be as good as One Piece is. That is because the OP live action ACTUALLY PAID CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAIL AND WAS CAREFUL NOT TO EXCLUDE IMPORTANT CHARACTER BUILDING AND STORY DEVELOPMENT.

I truthfully gave it a 7/10. It’s not bad and it’s not mid also. The only downside to this I thought was how they condensed the whole first season into 5 episodes. I’ve learned to let go of nitpicking as far as “following the source material 1 to 1”. If I was to, sure, there were many changes but generally, they kept the whole “spirit detective” thing true. Koenma being an adult right off the bat, botan not flying on her paddle…but again it worked because the main idea they’ve kept to their word.

Friends have asked me how it was i said after episode 2 it gets weird due to compacting 3 whole arcs into 3 episodes. The action and choreography is easily the standout though! Kurama's choreography especially was amazing! Itll probably be the standard for whip combat now. Also the presence of Takumi Kitamura was 100% Yusuke irl lmao.

Yu yu Hakusho was, and still is my favorite show ever. I was a lonely and abused kid and these characters literally shaped who I am as a person. Kurama was the sole inspiration for my passion for botany and agricultural. I really connected with Yusuke because he too, had a pretty awful home situation and was the black sheep. That show was my EVERYTHING as a kid. I knew the live action wasn't going to be exactly like the anime, but I didn't realize it was going to be THAT bad. To be clear, I really liked the acting and action. The failure of this show isn't on the shoulders of the actors. It was the story line and the zero attention given to the character development that hurt the show so badly. When watching this show, you don't have enough time to develop ANY connection to the characters. In the original show, it took a good 10 episodes to get going. The original show had ZERO filler episodes. Everything was important for the development of the characters. We got great build up and knew the motivations for nearly every player, even the secondary characters had great development! The live action gives us nothing but cool fight scenes. The tournament arc was what put yu yu Hakusho on the map, and the live action was so lazy it couldn't even be bothered to do the biggest arc in the entire show. I was SO excited to see some of my favorite characters like Gin and Chu. But we didn't even get the tournament, let alone all the cool friends, Yusuke and the others made in that arc. Yu yu Hakusho is a coming of age story. It's a story of redemption and learning self sovereignty. It's also about questioning authority and not seeing things as so "black and white" The original show was so deep at the end it was heartbreaking. The live action gave us none of the depth. What was the reasoning for taking all of Yusukes humor away? What was the reasoning for changing names and back stories? What was the reasoning for taking all of the depth out??? Yu yu Hakusho should NOT have been a difficult adaptation to get right. The strength of the story is in the STORY, not the fight scenes. It's a crying shame what this show was reduced to. It was super lazy writing and was rushed for a quick nostalgic cash grab. This series could have been the next Supernatural, but they blew it.

Yea it sucked pretty bad. First 2 episodes were passable (I thought they were going to finish with the assault on Tarukane’s mansion). Halfway through episode 3, they lost the “plot.” I couldn’t watch anymore partway through episode 4. The fight were cool but without the story, it doesn’t mean anything. Welp, back to Frieren.

The biggest travesty was skipping over how people mourned Yusuke, and he had to watch people he thought didn’t care, visibly suffer without him. I don’t like how Genkai’s training was brushed over, and how his relationship with her was actually developed into a mother-son thing after so much training, and heated exchanges. Not emphasizing the human aspect of Kuwabara, when he’s teamed up with demons is something I missed. The whole 4 man crew element was sorely missed as well. Yusuke and Kuwabara became instant friends, but they don’t even try to get Heie in the mix. At least Yusuke helped with Kurama’s mother, but I don’t feel a 4 man unit, like the original. I honestly hate Yusuke’s death as well. The original was just a chance car accident with no outside influence besides the spirit world not anticipating a guy like Yusuke to save a child, who wasn’t even going to die without his interference. I would’ve kept his death untouched vs some creepy insect demon going on a joy ride in a truck. I don’t like the adaptation at all.

You're takes are garbage Bad Take 1: People did mourn and show respect to yusuke, In Japan it's not respectful to cry out in the open while others mourn but you see in private yusuke's mother and keiko cried over yusuke obviously kuwabara doesnt care about societal norms so he cried outloud those 3 were the only ones who really cared about him so why would alot of people mourn over someone they feared or hated. Bad Take 2: Due to budget & time constrictions unsure of a season 2 they had to give the fans something if it never got renewed the live action would be boring because yusuke trains but no proof of his growth. Bad Take 3: Kuwabara & Yusuke always had a friendly rivalry even before yusuke became spirit detective, It just took them finally working together to flesh it out (LITERALLY LIKE IN THE ANIME) Ofc Hiei isnt in the mix immediately in the context of the live action they barely interacted with him outside of fighting. Bad take 4: He dies literally like in the anime the only difference and kindve a better change instead of a speeding driver it was a demon bug possessed person which makes sense why they wouldnt have expected his death because no one knew about the hole or the plan to fuse the spirit and living world. The adaptation is great you just lack common sense and an attention span

The problem is people going into these live-actions expecting it to be just like the animes/mangas. Its an adaptation, not a recreation. It wasn't completely good but it was well done imo. The characters, the outfits, the fights, mostly everything fit well for a realistic adaption. Them cramming it into a few hours is my only biggest problem. But I guess they did it since they weren't sure if it would be received well and the possibility of them not having a renew for Season 2.

As far as adaptation goes, I was actually impressed with how they streamlined the story. If you can put aside your fandom for a second, YYH the manga is kind of all over the place. It has the highest highs, but also the lowest lows. Separating the wheat from the chaff is not a bad thing. As for the Dark Tournament, let's be real, that would have quintupled the size of the cast and the budget. Just not feasible. If we get a season two, I fully expect it to cover both Chapter Black and Three Kings, because they already dropped hints that Yusuke's hidden power could grow out of control.

First off, say you love this series on Netflix for a better next season for this anime! I kinda wanted to see where they fight the tiger in the saint beast castle along with the ice dragon from that same castle. I appreciate their effort to making the live action, but there were a lot of hiccups with it. Like hiei didn’t have a dagger, he had two swords in the anime series. I thought it was gonna live up to the hype when I saw the performance with Goki, the red monster with the horns in the junk yard, because they made him look strong but then the series started to feel rushed after that point. Edit: plus, hiei only did one fire move, and karasu didn’t turn blonde :/

I wouldn't say it was awful. It was okay and pretty fun. Togashi apparently oversaw the live action. The issue was the quick pace and pushing the later stuff into the earlier arcs while skipping like 2 or 3 arcs. Didn't really give us much time with Yusuke and friends building their bounds. Also lots of fun characters and character moments were out the window. But one of my favorite moments that felt anime af was the Yusuke and Kuwabara little scuffle in the first episode. The last thing is I wouldn't mind if they sprinkled the Sakyo and Togoro Bros involvement for a season or two letting them be the villains in the background until the DT.

For me its okay to cut the minor arcs but they should have not pushed for the Dark Tournament Arc to be included in the 1st season. They should have focused on character developement and relationships of the characters. The whole Taguro killing Botan and Alfreds deaths was pointless because you cant feel thw connection between the characters. Kudos for the actors and figth coordinators for carrying the whole show but they can only do so much.

This is my opinion. Someone at Netflix saw a small niche group of super fans of this show like us and saw an opportunity to squeeze decent profit out it. So they just took all the "best" parts and squeezed it together to basically gave us fan service. I'm in the same camp with you rhyme. I hated it but loved it at the same time. I would of loved to see genkais tournament with rando, I would of been okay if they skipped the saint beasts but that saga did bring the boys back together so it had a purpose, and what I'm really sad about is that we didn't get to see chu or Jin or any of the other awesome badass characters from the dark tournament.....we didn't get to see hieis one time use of his demon form which I was excited for.....I could rant forever, my god no knife edge boxing match....so much content they could have made this show amazing but they settled for fan service. As a person who watched countless reruns of the animé. This Netflix adaptation is a version of its own. They really rushed it (story wise). Delete all the enemies prior Toguro's group. Genkai's mini tournament arc and Rando gone, Suzaku gone, The introduction to probably one of most iconic antagonist in animé Toguro where he destroys a building to showcase his power towards Yusuke... Gone .. as viewers we felt Yusuke's fear. They did the "We are mad because you killed our master and now we take revenge" troupe but they were trained by Genkai on a really short period. All the build up where Genkai fought secretly and mysteriously as the masked fighter to help our heroes..... Gone! That is the whole reason Genkai's death was disheartening not only to Yusuke but to the viewers. Genkai was like a teacher who was always there to the rescue.. that is gone... This adaptation really went and omitted all the great story telling from the original. Edit: Actors were great. Kuwabara's actor is my favorite, Keiko also knows how to fight a little 😂. CGI and fight scenes were great. My only gripe is they omitted a ton out of the original story.

I think they are testing the waters that's why the story was rushed, the studio was not expecting much because of how live action was received by audiences prior to one piece live action. They made a story so rushed, that it's ok if it got cancelled or if it succeeded they might have a chance for season 2. I hope YuYu Hakusho will get season two, and i hope they will let important plot points to cook so we can have a satisfying season ender. I don't mind how they change some parts of the story here and there to give a refreshing take on the anime and manga, what i would not like is if there are so many changes it becomes a story of its own using the Yu Yu Hakusho title.

the first two episodes were super fun and i enjoyed them a lot, the changes they made worked surprisingly well and compressed information in an efficient way. but episode three onward was uhhhh not very good. the way they compressed the story by combining the two arcs did not work. my main issue with the series is that it cut so many important character moments- it tried to have the same major emotional beats (genkais death, yusuke v toguro etc) but it just didnt hit the same way because all the build up got cut!!!!! it was incredibly frustrating and honestly the first two episodes being as good as they were just made the downward spiral of the last three feel so much worse than if it had just been bad from the beginning.

For a 5 episode run, I feel like it's pretty solid. It's fast-paced enough and follows the source enough that it entertained my mom who had never watched the OG. She is now interested in watching the original. Same thing that happened with one piece. If an adaptation is done well enough that it gets someone interested in seeing the original, I think that's overall a success. Does it have flaws? Yeah of course, they speed ran the plot and I wish it would have just been the spirit detective arc, but as someone who hasn't watched the show in years and is now able to rewatch it with someone I love I'm not complaining to much.

Now that I have seen One Piece live action and how anime live adaptations SHOULD be... Yu Yu Hakusho just didn't cut it for me. I grew up with this manga and show and felt weird while watching it. I didn't have the same connections with the characters as I did with One Piece nor the motivation to keep watching (watched it cuz I forced myself to... lol). We can say "but the visuals were good..." but so are many other films and shows nowadays, but it doesn't make them "good." I think though one thing you said truly encompasses how I feel which is: if you can ignore the OG material or anime and just see this for it's own thing... it's actually pretty ok for being only 5 episodes. Kind of what I had to do with Wednesday on Netflix... it's not Addamns Family, but it's inspired. Overall, I'd give it a 5.5/10. And wth is Kuwabara being so damn tiny!!!! LOL!! Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely my favorite anime in comparison to my love of dragon ball, I have to say they did a good job with some of the fights, they did a great job with the casting and how the characters looked. But they screwed the story up horribly and completely ruined the dark tournament 🏟️ like completely shit the bed with it. The dark tournament is what every fan knows about and it’s the best tournament arc in all of anime. How do you fuck that up I’ll never understand. Also no baby enma, no George the ogre, no kuwabara sister. I give it a 5/10. If it wasn’t for how well the characters looked and the fights scenes it would have been on dragon ball evolution level to me. Good watch but very disappointed at the same time.

I see comments defending the show based on budget, yet, Godzilla minus one had a tiny budget, especially compared to most hollywood films (and even series) and is a critical success among fans and critics alike. This is because they focus on character development, most hollywood products now, focus on pushing messages, leading to often terrible products. Just look at Disney/Marvel now.

I will say this, I kinda agree with you. A couple days before it hit netflix i told a coworker there was no way they'd hit the Dark Tournament in 5 episodes. Well I'll be damned they did. The moment I noticed thats where they were going i looked at the show in a totally different light. I then turned off my YYH brain and pretended I'd never seen the show before, after that i had a blast haha. But i for sure see where youre coming from.

I started and said "Oh only 5 episodes, i guess they will release the rest of the season in a 2nd part." I did like the action and the characters werent bad. But it was so rushed they missed out on all the emotion in the story. Really disappointed

It was too condensed and they took out a lot of the struggles out. Though I did enjoy it so far, I didn't like how they changed some things. Like if this is a full season, they could have stretched to make more emotional connections to the characters background.

I just wished they put more budget so they can make a 15 episodes and that's because I love the Live Action actually. But now that I am thinking about it, my favorite part is the bigger Tournament. Every fight is very strategic. That would be a good 2nd Season on Netflix and since the first season is a success they should get way more budget and more Episodes. Again loyal fan, I was more disappointed on RuRouni Kenshin with Sanosuke. Those 2 are my most faves anime along with Saber Marionette.

I don’t think they had the budget one piece had so that’s why my expectations weren’t as high they didn’t even mention chapter black at all

As someone who never saw the original anime, I loved the Netflix series. But maybe that’s why. Made me go back and start watching the anime. And it’s probably some of the best live action anime fight scenes I’ve seen.

The first episode delivered promise imo but then things went down hill after that. The actors were fine. Thought they did a great job mirroring the anime characters minus Genkai… She was too sweet, less insulting like in the anime. They botched her character. They botched her history with Toguro. That alone should have been explained in further detail to get the audience connected to their backstory. One of the problems this series lacked was emotions. I felt nothing when Genkai was killed. Didn’t even play into Yusuke’s final battle with Toguro. I didn’t feel any emotional connection between Yusuke and Genkai. Yusuke and Kuwabara had a nice connection. I enjoyed their back and forth but they didn’t connect with Hiei and Kurama as much as they should have. First off, 5 eps wasn’t enough. They skipped important arcs that mattered in the development of all the characters. They rushed to the Toguro brothers. Thought the action was fine. I did enjoy the team up at the end. I don’t mind adapting away from the anime a little bit, but key moments and key elements were needed and they weren’t there. One Piece was given more care. Avatar will be better than this… Just sad for Yu Yu Hakusho fans that we got the short end of the stick… If Netflix renews for a second season, they gotta do better especially with Shinobu Sensui. They can’t fuck up his arc…

For what it was, Netflix did an amazing job. But as you mentioned they took on way too much without planning for the future. Killing of Genkai and Togoru brothers so early on really limits what can be done in future seasons. It was a nice watch though.

I loved the pace thought they skipped the right amount of stuff but combing dark tournament and yukina rescue was not cool. And the final victory did not feel any where close to earned

Fans set their expectations too high which makes them disappointed in the YYH live-action. I enjoyed the mini series and the actors did a great job in portraying their characters. The action, the condense story and CGI was done incredibly well which reminded me of the Rurouni Kenshin live-action.

Actually, I thought some of the CGI was pretty crap, and I’m talking about the monster Toguro punched in front of the rich guys and Toguro’s bulked up state itself.

only 5 eps???? Why... Thats really hard to work with. My main worry was Kurabara. He just doesnt look anything like what the character should be but I know when you bring a really good actor to a role they can win you. This is what im hoping for.

Fighting / actions scenes are goooood! Reminds me of Jackie Chan, during the Goki fight. But the pacing and story telling is rushed. No character development especially Genkai. The giving of spirit orb? that was traaash. No Pu. I think the best they could have done is instead of the Toguro team fight, replaced it with the 4 Saint Beast during the rescue scene and got the audience hype up for Toguro in Season 2, but what's done is done. I want to be optimistic. The tone and the atmosphere we got from this live action is fit for the Chapter Black arc. Imagine this Yusuke doing some detective stuff that leads to Sensui. That would be Season 2. And can we still get a Tournament? Maybe if they have the budget? Remember that 3 Kings saga has a tournament too... Maybe that will be our Dark Tournament in this live action and that's for Season3.

Not a bad series, the action choreography was great. But the Yusuke actor over did it with the exaggerated hunch back swagger. Looked goofy as hell. Thought he would fall over. Lol. Japanese actors need to learn how to look 'bad ass' without overacting. Also, I didn't like how the 'Rei Gun' didn't feel like it had weight. Looked too ethereal and thin, or 'airy' to me - not the kind of heavy blast you'd imagine could eviscerate the enemy. Visually could have been better depicted, in my opinion.

They should have done 5 episode season of the first season of the anime and the dark tournament as a second season of 5 episodes but with out a guaranteed second season I can see why they condensed it I do hope we get a second season and they don't try to condensed as much like they did the first season

It was good, I love the fighting in it, they took a lot of the key element of the development and I get it their budget but it’s also like they skim through the manga, the anime and choose what they like the most and said we will write a story around it and make it modern and simple like I was wanting more for the fight between yusuke and toguro. Also I didn’t like that took genkai fight from toguro away that would made it more emotions in the story

I haven't read it watched very much of YuYu Hakusho, but I'm familiar with most of the early beats. I thought this show had some realky quick pacing, but was overall pretty enjoyable. The narrative made logical sense, even if it didnt carry as much emotional weight as a longer series would. But the thing that sticks out in my mind is that theres nothing in this first season that automatically disqualifies it from adapting the Dark Tournament arc in the next. Outside of that Toguro thing, which they would need to address properly.

Dang, from the trailers I thought they were only doing the detective arc for season 1, which would've made so much more sense. If they did it well, S2 would've had so much hype.

I was waiting to finish watching the film to finally say this: Ok, it isn't 100% reliving the source material and that's fine. As I've stated, watching it from an alternative universe lense helps with the experience a lot more. Sakyo being the main antagonist focus was what the character needed for years. It always felt like he was randomly placed in the anime. Team Toguro's costumes and actors were on point imo. Team Urameshi were cool and their outfits started to grow on me. Every time Kurama is just standing there watching something it looked as if he was farting haha! Yusuke being 17 when he starts his journey as 14 made me chuckle. Genkai not being as involved was a bit saddening, but I get it. There's a lot to nitpick in this film especially if you know the franchise but it wasn't a HORRIBLE experience. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't excellent. It was straight, I'd give it a 7/10. It was a fun lil ride. Nothing lower than 5/10, nothing higher than 7/10. This is a harmless live action.

I wouldn't say the Funimation dub for YYH was that great either. They mispronounced a lot of Japanese words and names, Kurama's VA sounded nothing like his Japanese counterpart. As bad as the ANIMAX dub was at least they gave Kurama a voice that sounded like the JP VA. Funimation never cares or cared for their dubs until Kai. EN dub VA's don't get paid enough so they don't give a sh**.
