I live just a couple of minutes down the road from our village petrol station, and a few years back I was there filling up when an old Land Rover pulled up next to me. It was clearly a very old example, with the exhaust sticking up through the front wing. It was in remarkably good condition though. I couldn't help but give it a quick look over, while the cloth capped farmer type owner looked on. I noticed the mileage was something like 18'000 miles. I asked the owner if that was the genuine mileage. He replied "nay lad, I've ****ing pushed it further than that"..... Decent old Range Rovers will sell James. There are plenty of Wesley Pegden mechanical tinkerers out there....

Have a reliable 4.4 V8 one. Took myself, 4 passengers and all our luggage on a European road trip in June. France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Netherlands. Didn't miss a beat. Of course i know the L322 inside out and do all my own maintenance. Surprisingly easy and cheap and everything works. LPG makes it inexpensive to motor it around too.

I love my 2007 lr Range Rover Supercharged. But key is looking after them they are a nearly 3t car with full 4x4. I brought her this year I known buying her I will need to spend some dosh but since I did the work myself and my lr specialist, it’s been worth it. The RR have a rep partly due to some owners/ dealers run them on a budget and longer you leave a issue it will get more expensive, plus it is a premium car. I think once you own one and actually appreciate what it is you are hooked. I’ve owned 2 so far and both have been a pleasure to own and to be honest I’ve never had any big issues with them bar where and tear.

The 4x4 system is very sensitive to different rolling diameters so same, and equally worn, tyres all round is recommended. The lack of service stamps on an older Landrovers is not unusual, once past the warranty period many owners will be using independent specialists who don’t charge main dealer prices and will often fix issues rather than firing the parts cannon at your vehicle.

You should never have to justify your choice in cars to people in KZbin land .if you have to,then you are talking to the wrong people, because they will never understand. The thing with any vehicle is that it has it's good points and bad points. If you join a forum, you will only hear about the problems with any vehicle because that's where the collective help people with the problems. You never hear the good side. Anyone who thinks a range rover is going to be cheap to run requires there bumps being felt. It's a lot of car for the money. It will probably perform as it should, and give you the pleasure you want out of it . Great video as usual James.

I loved my L322 4.4 V8 petrol Range Rover. It was quite a unique one as it was 2006 and built during the changeover from BMW to Jaguar. Had the BMW interior (previous to this one) but the more reliable Jaguar engine. Sadly, with lockdown, it didn’t like not being used and with job uncertainties I had to use the other car due to the fuel costs. It was soul destroying having to do two transactions at pay at pump due to the size of the tank 😂. Bought it from a dealer with a gearbox fault - it was just a linkage underneath which was fixed for £50 - got £2k off the price! Even made money on it when I sold it. Amazing cars, if I had some more disposable money to put into a luxury car, I’d buy another one with a heartbeat.

Lovely cars. Had few myself and currently run a 4.2sc v8 as my daily, costs a few quid but comfy, quick, etc i do most of my own mechanical work so maintaining it is very reasonable. Agree about people’s comments regarding Range Rover drivers, in my experience though full size “full fat” range rovers tend to be driven quite decently, sports however…. But yea great cars. Also regarding fuel guage, my 4.2 takes ages to go from full to half then half disappears quick, tanks are around 100 litres give or take a couple.

You are so right about the tax and fuel nonsense. I’ve just bought a Jag FPace SVR 5 litre V8 550hp and the first thing most people say is “oooo what does it do to the gallon?” Firstly, like you, I don’t care and secondly on a recent run to Tenby on the blanket speed cameras M4 it did 28.5 mpg. So that’s fine. Tax is a bit stiff because the greedy rotten 25:15 government take an extra £350 a year for 5 years as it cost more than £40k new. Bloody thieves! Good car there James. Enjoy it along with the Jag!!

I had an Ex Presscar TDV8 and it was brilliant. So much power and comfort. Tge most comfortable car i have ever driven. You missed the beautiful cooled seats which in the current westher would be heavn. I only traded mine because i moved and my journey to work was just 3 mikes so it kept draining the battery. I had to trickle charge it all the time. Oh the worst job you can do is change the battery. Theres no space. It weighs a ton and you need to climb on the engine to get to it! My only parts it needed was the battery and front wishbones which due to age started to clunk.

There is no cheap tax anymore since in 2017 its just flat £180 for all cars and anything over £40k new has an extra £310 to pay for the first 5 years I believe. If you're looking at a car and it runs pre 2017 and post 2017 get the pre 2017 model and save on VED if its an economical car and if its a guzzler get the newer one. I pay £35 a year on my 66 plate Toyota Auris I specifically stated to Toyota when I was buying one I didn't want anything newer than a 66 plate due to paying at the time an extra £150 a year VED and still £145 today. My Toyota Auris is the 1.2 Turbo and its brilliant to drive its smooth and faultless and quick if you want it to be I made the right choice bought in March 2019 for £9500 with 40k miles. Getting anything getting the equivilant deal today is impossible I would be paying £14k or more. I really lucked out. By the way if you ever buy a car from a main dealer do it september or march as they are desperate at those times to clear old stock to make way for the latest newest reg plate cars the Toyota dealership even admitted this when selling me the car, also don't be afraid of the one with minor body damage either they're priced to sell but they will happily touch it in or respray it to make the sale I got what would have been £500-£600 of bodywork done by them by them for free so it doesn't cost them that much to do.

I don't think the TDV8 (3.6) is much worse than the SDV8 (4.4) I've owned a TDV8 for six years, and it has been very reliable, until I got a catastrophic coolant leak, while towing the caravan. And, of course, with the temp gauge with a hystereis, the damage to one of the cylinder heads was already done, by the time the gauge showed red and the engine went in to restricted power mode. I elected to replace it with an L405 SDV8. That saved me a boatload of money in annual taxes, since the TDV8 was Euro4, while the SDV8 is Euro5. The 4.4 in the L322 body is a bit tough to work on, as is the 3.6. Watch out for oiling problems for the turbos (should all have been taken care of by now) and an EGT sensor that often go bust. Both turbos and that EGT sensor is a real pain to get at on the L322. It's a bit better on the L405, but it's still difficult. I had to replace mine. You can drive with it disconnected, but it is used for monitoring the temp during regeneration of the DPF, so it will regenerate at maximum efficiency, saving you fuel. The electronic dipstick on the 4.4 should have been outlawed! It has to sit for 20 minutes before you're allowed to inspect the level. Totally useless! Give me an old fashioned dipstick!

James sell both Jag and L322 and get a 2017 Range Rover Sport 3.0 diesel HSE. It is the Goldilocks RR product. Huge performance, mechanical diff, no low box, 36 mpg long term average, new type sat nav infotainment, old switches and buttons not the swipe type, I have one coming up to 100,000 miles and has been rock solid. It came with 22 inch wheels and prefer the drive on the large alloys tried it on smaller alloys when being refurbed and drive was no better but handling less precise.

⚠️Re temp gauges, I'll let you into a little secret....... Many gauges will sit bang in the middle but they do so between coolant temps of 72C right up beyond boiling point to 112C. That's how they are calibrated. Then any temp above that the needle suddenly jumps up. The only way to monitor real time coolant temp is enter the service mode or hook up an OBD scanner

You can't even get the body off an L322, since it is a unibody construction. The engine sits in a subframe on the L322. Yes you can do the turbos on it without lowering the engine, but it's a tight squeeze! Anyhow there is less turbo problems with the L322 compared to the L320, due to more space and, hence, better cooling for the oil pipes. Usually it's the oil pipes that gets clogged, resulting in lack of lubrication and cooling.

My mates 20 plate disco with 20k on had a rear coolant pipe leaking, lost his coolant, could have been terminal, shouldn't happen at that age, miles, bought from new, I've got a 61 plate freelander parked up in limp mode, steering column immobiliser fault and ended up with a county court case on another due to sill rust, 09 plate, I totally, totally avoid these now, tbh you'll not dare sell it mate, OK for yourself to run tho, but if you do any miles 20 mpg gets annoying,I've had plenty of juicy cars as well, you always get fed up, these days with people back all the time I dare not sell tackle like that, judge absolutely wiped the floor with me on mine, as you know and tbh mine was a near minter.

Problem is most people who comment on reliability issues have never owned a Range Rover. They are a high maintenance vehicle with lot's of tech...Problem is some people who buy one, don't do their homework and can't afford to maintain it properly and then they kick off on the Internet. If you google 'maintenance costs Bugatti Veyron you will get what I'm talking about...tyres are about £25,000..wheels need changing every 10 years, at over £50,000 ! It's not a fiat 500 folks. As for the road tax brigade bragging about their free road tax on their Renault Clio....well I for one would sooner be dragged up the Entire length of the M5 by my testicles than drive around in a small budget box.....but ya pays ya money ya makes ya choice. Nice to see something out of the ordinary on your channel Mr Chops. The Ford derived V8 diesel btw is considered a very reliable unit and your V8 is low mileage....so don't under sell it. Good video R kid...be good.

Tend to buy my cars at 1 year to 18 months old let the first guy loose the new car depreciation. Started with a P38 4.6….went through 3 before I got a good one (then rolled it on the farm 😡). L332 4.4 bmw one, hideous beyond belief. Jaguar powered one next, better, still not great. Then same as you, 3.6 tdv8 which made me cry every time it went near a garage. Maybe I just struck out, but that we the last straw (25,000km) with EGR issues, sensor issues, untraceable suspension hard riding issues, injectors failing…you name it mine had it. Maybe it was made on a Friday 🤪 Went to tdV8 Touareg and to be honest haven’t looked back. Still got my 2018 (2nd touareg) and don’t want to replace it with the latest (have heard they have issues too now). I love Range rovers…no idea why, they just appeal….but I know the Touareg will get me there AND back

Do like the dealer who you bought it off and get a trailer, I've done loads of deliveries, see video on line, small deposit, pay upon delivery, people are megga grateful and seem to be better customers, another strange thing doing that is they don't spend 3 hours looking round, it's just drop it off, when they come to the pitch, it's like going thru everything, also if it's gone 50miles away they are unlikely to bring it back, while if they've come to you it's like a foot in the door, I'd have (as I have) a driver on stand by to deliver, I'm delivering 80%of cars now tbh.

@raptorheli2 I agree with you. However, most range rover owners don't go properly off road or do any heavy towing. The xc60 / xc90 will get through snow without any trouble and likewise will park on a grass verge or field without getting stuck, obviously no use in actual mud (I run four season mitchelin cross climate tires on mine) I personally live in a remote area and have an xc60 as my car for normal use and a isuzu d max that I use for work, lugging about tools, heavy towing, and often off road. A top spec xc60/ xc90 can have many of the rangerover options, although many of these never get used in real life or very rarely.
