Ability to turn legs and torso so the robot can turn 180 degrees without moving from site is very interesting. Their long time background trying to make an hydraulic robot clearly clarified them the limitations of hydraulic so they are now taking profit of what electric actuators can do, like 360 turns. Amazing they are the first who notice that while other companies are building electric humanoid robots since long time ago.
@Flyingwigs7 ай бұрын
If you look at their legacy robots, they started with gas powered hydraulic systems and progressed from there. In high load applications actuators were not up to the task yet, they eventually used them in the dog robots, but with Atlas the speed and load balancing were probably easier with hydraulics. There's likely more limitations with the new Atlas because of being strictly electric, but there's benefits as well like efficiency.

But now that all the elite are gone to Mars and left everyone else to die by there creations. There a human that has an idea. The brain chips that musk installed into the brain. That's the key to ultimately winning the war. So they build mechs that are controlled by humans that at some point gain access to the chips. Now you got man controlled mechs that have AI chips in there brain. So now there brain can instantly access knowledge and ultimately unlocks secrets of how the universe works. But in the not so far future, we may be building "factories" designed exclusively for robots, in order to eliminate the need for humanoids in that space. I put factories in quotes because once you eliminate the need to design for humans, it opens up an enormous range of installations for which specifically designed robots are the only occupants - they never need to eat, use the restroom, answer their personal phone, or leave; they can be purpose-built to provide functionality no human could achieve. No windows, no stairs, elevators actuated by wifi links instead of buttons or speech, spaces with incredible clutter that no human could negotiate... Signs saying "NO HUMANS beyond this point ". Love that these things move, like you would assume a robot would move, or should move with not replicating the limits of our joints etc. but using all degrees of freedom actuators vs muscles provide. (Personally, I think it is a tradeoff, since our movement apparatus is just ultra efficient, when it comes to energy, but of course can not provide the advantages that come with other methods like the full turn of joints etc.) PS: Am I the only one who somehow got "Lost in Space" vibes from that thing? :-D

If this isn't CGI, they sure did a good job of making it look CGI! Something about the camera motion, robot motion and lighting seems off. I'm not sure why no one else is mentioning that. BD hasn't done CGI before, so I'm surprised with this video.

@@mygirldarby I happen to be a filmmaker who deals with CGI as well as an animatronic robot maker. I've followed Boston Dynamics for a long time, and this is the first footage I've seen from them that looks off. Not just the robot, but look at the background, the camera motion, etc. I'm not 100% certain it's CGI, but when you compare it to their other videos, you have to admit that it looks a bit off.

@halocinematic31277 ай бұрын
@@mygirldarby True, they don't. Some companies will release conceptual videos though. I'm just saying, as someone who works in video production, that there are some artificial elements to it. Ignore the robot for a second... Watch the camera motion. Particularly the strange sweep up in the last second or two. If the robot and background are real, then they must have added an artificial "hand held" camera motion to the footage, which is a simple plug-in on most NLE editors. Look at the lighting on the robot... Doesn't it look a little bright compared to the environment? I'm not saying this is definitely CGI, but it looks artificial. There's something off about it.
