It's amazing to realize that Wu's family ran the EK into the ground. I did the math and EK was a mess for around 504 years prior to Kuvira's rule if you exclude the rule of Chin the Conqueror who's legacy is quite controversial in the EK. The EK fell into disarray when around the time Kyoshi was born and largely remained unstable until it collapsed when Korra was 18. Edit: It's actually 484 years. I thought Roku died at the age 90 instead of 70.

You just need to add up all the Avatars lifespans from Kyoshi to Aang and add in Korra's age when it collapsed. (230+70+166+18= 484) The Earth Kingdom fell into complete disarray shortly after Avatar Kuruk died. The Earth was hot mess all throughout Avatar Kyoshi's time as Avatar. For example, around the time Chin the Conqueror was active there were several peasant rebellions against the Earth King going on. Many of Kyoshi's actions led to the continued decline of the EK such as the death of Jianzhu, as well as the death of Chin and her creation of the Dai Li. By the time of Avatar Roku it was still a mess. A major reason the Fire Nation was able to conquer as much as they did was because they took advantage of the EK being in disarray. By the time of Avatar Aang the situation of the EK deteriorated further due to the war. The EK never recovered from the war and previous centuries of internal conflicts. By the time of Avatar Korra the Earth Kingdom had violently collapsed by the time she was 18.

@@arkcliref Yeah, and especially one as large and diverse as the Earth Kingdom, imagine if Yugoslavia's state in the 80s lasted for nearly 500 years. I still maintain that Wu dissolving the Earth Kingdom was a pretty fucken stupid move, especially given he had every ability to turn the Earth Kingdom around, could have been King Wu the Great, but decided to shatter his realm into a myriad of republics that most likely will tear each other apart soon enough.

To be honest, I'm not all for the "abolishing the monarchy" trope that media so often uses. Monarchs may have had some dark spots over the course of history but there have been many kings and queens who've actually been GOOD to people. If anything, shows like Avatar should borrow a page from Babar's playbook and create an elective monarchy; a form of government where the next king or queen is chosen by the people instead of going to the monarch's next of kin

Y’know having everything laid out like that- and hearing that Wu went to college and kept up with the news while in Republic City- whose to say part of his behavior couldn’t be attributed to a trauma response? He is a barely legal adult hurriedly Coronated who found out one of his family members was murdered and his kingdom looted. He was faced with pretty harsh realities at a relatively young age. It could be that his worst traits were amplified due to not coping well with his trauma. I mean it was sweet in a way how Wu imagined “us two,” as Mako and himself living it up in the capital. And then he is seen to treat people pretty well when he’s relaxed or happy. It’s more when he’s grieving or angry that his bad behavior comes out which isn’t an excuse but you have to admit people have tendencies to lash out when they’re panicking and my God did this *boy* have pretty damn valid reasons to be an emotional mess.

Am I the only one hate this guy? Like how people see this guy and think "Yeah, he will be a great ruler than Kuvira."? The writing here is bad for two reasons. First, they need Kuvira to be the villain so bad that they come up with idea of alternate leader to replace Kuvira but ended up with comedic relief character, Prince Wu. Second, the idea of Kuvira attacking Republic City is so stupid and out of character since attacking Republic City can create war between Fire Nation, Air Nomads and Water Tribes. With r without the machine, the plan is insane. Prince Wu probably ended up like his grandfather at best where he became a puppet by Dai Li
