Literally every single member, past and present, of the Fun Home cast is among the cutest people of all time and I just want to hug them all at the same time because I love them. Also still low-key in denial about the show closing September 10

I guess I just don't get why there is so much emphasis on sexual orientation. Because after watching the stumble through, I definitely didn't get the idea that I knew anything at all about the main character. All I knew was that she was lesbian and that tells me absolutely nothing about a person. Not sure if that comes across as callous or not. It seems like some people greatly benefit from the play, but as a straight person, it sort of makes me think that non-straight people are more carried away with their sexual orientation than they really are. I mean most of these people probably think of themselves as mothers or as painters or as architects or as teachers or as carpenters or as plumbers or as friends or as neighbors or as lawyers or as brothers or as sisters. Not as lesbians or as gays. There's so much more to a person's life story.

Sexual orientation is prominent in the plot, but I would argue the show is really about the repressed, deceitful family dynamics, and her father's internalized resentment towards his family. He loves them, but they're essentially a literal product of the lie he lives. That cognitive dissonance kills him in the end, leaving Beth to piece together if he loved her BECAUSE she was just like him, or IN SPITE of it.
