The Atheist Experience episode 21.03 for January 22, 2017, with Matt Dillahunty and Tracie Harris.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZbin comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZbin comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Eddy has a misunderstanding that many theists have about being an atheist. Eddy says that he was an atheist turned theist and that implies a special status. Eddy and theists who promote their prior atheism imply that they switched because either really good argument proved convincing or that spiritual experiences overcame their lack of belief. People are atheists for different reasons, however. Some are atheists because they may not want to do all those "churchy" things, or because they do not want to give up their lifestyle, or because they had a bad experience with the church, etc. Not all people that claim to be atheist have a proper skeptical approach to life. Not all atheists understand how to think critically. One can be an atheist in early life and never had interest to determine whether religions have any credibility, then when older, or after a near death experience, or life's adversity, or a love interest, religion and god becomes a matter of interest. When such a person becomes convinced of theism, they proclaim .."I was an atheist first, but special experiences that I can't explain convinced me that Jesus created the world." An atheist is just someone who finds no sufficient evidence to believe that a god exists. That's all. The descriptor does not say anything about the person's ability to think critically or skeptically. An atheist can be just as uncritical in thought as everyone else. What is important is to have an effective methodology by which one can determine what is likely to be true from what is false. It requires an understanding of what proper constitutes evidence and an understanding of the different types of evidence.

Honestly, I don't think you choose to believe either way. I don't choose to believe that trees are real, I have climbed many of them. I don't choose not to believe in a god, there is just no reason that I have been given that warrants that belief. Every believer has somehow been convinced by bad reasons. Maybe they are only around other believers and they believe because they simply don't know any better. Or, as you pointed out, something happens to them and they lack the intellect to realize that god doing it was not the only explanation.

The biggest clue that points to the unreliability of theism is that most religions closely align with geographical location and hence cultural influences. A significant proportion of theists choose the religion they have had the most exposure to (a reason why indoctrination from birth is a significant tenet of religion). Most people will follow the religion of their family of origin. An example is near death experiences where people will claim to see/feel “God” yet it is almost always just happens to be the one from their own affiliation.

The "open minded" excuse is so infuriating. I hear friends and loved ones cite it all the time, and they twist it to the point where any healthy skepticism or investigation which does not instantly confirm to or support their unfounded beliefs are labeled as "closed-mindedness". And in that way, they smugly adopt what they think is the intellectually superior position, when it's exactly the opposite. It drives me NUTS.

“Atheists are closed-minded.” Really? Watch the evolution vs creation debate between Bill Nye and Ken Hamm. Nye’s arguments were very rational, detailed, easy to understand, based on science. All of Hamm’s arguments boiled down to “It’s in the Bible!” At the end, the moderator asked both debaters what would change their minds. Hamm said, “Nothing!” Nye said, “Evidence.” So, who has a closed mind?

Indeed. Collins is an awful shocking example of how even otherwise rational intelligent people can con themselves into accept all manner of preposterous horseshit. On some level I'm sure he knows this, and is at least slightly embarrased and chagrinned. In Bill Maher's Religilous documentary/mockumentary there is a piece where Maher interviews Collins and asks him some questions. Collins is clearly a little uncomfortable and realises what ridiculous cack he is talking. Especially for an intelligent eminent scientist. It is worth checking out if you have never seen it. I find it hard to credit he can be so aware his beliefs are preposterous, yet still go along with it. Religious and faith based beliefs are inherently dishonest and anti intellectual. I find it difficult to conceive of personally.

Said he and Superman grew up together out in the sticks somewhere, didn't want to be too specific, apparently he even changed his name to help protect Superman's identity. He tried to sell me some crystals, bunch of them in a little plastic bag, said they were from Superman's space ship or something. Another person who never learnt the basics of how to test validity or to try to prove something. How is the education system failing so many people? Amazes me that someone who finds multiple things they can NOT explain and then goes on to decide this means the supernatural. To me and most rational thinking people finding multiple unexplained thing means hmm - we need to explain them. If we cannot we need to expand our scientific knowledge until we can explain them. Assigning a supernatural cause should NEVER be the result of considering an unexplained event.

I used to live in a house where a light fixture was mounted on the wall with light bulbs not hooked to the electrical net, the wires were just hanging behind it and once it flashed multiple times (the story was that the house was haunted) and still don't believe in ghosts or god. I'm cool with not knowing how and why it happened. But it makes for an amusing story.
@joecoolioness6399

There is a house on a lonely road away from the city near where I live. It was rumored to be haunted because every time you parked under the street light, it would turn off. So we went out there and parked under the light and sure enough, it turned off. We left, parked far enough away so that we could just see the light and it came back on a few minutes later. With no other cars parking under it, a few minutes later it turned off again. We watched it for an hour and the pattern repeated itself. We even went back and parked under it and stayed long enough so that it turned back on. So what is more likely, some ghost in the house is causing the light to turn on and off or there is an electrical issue causing it to turn on and off on it's own?

Lightbulbs usually explode when manufacturers don’t put enough insulation on the base of the bulb which causes the base to melt and allows the gas to leak out. The leaking gas causes a pressure difference which causes the lightbulb to explode. So, that’s probably what happened.

A better experiment would have been: replacing the lamp a number of times (a set of used lamps and a set of new lamps), each time mentioning the suicide vicitms name. . Glass used in old style lamps is not perfectly consistent (because it is glass). Many times lamps (light bulbs) just blow, new or old.

I remember when The God That Wasn't There came out and me and a few of my punk friends watched it. The power flashed as soon as we Turned it on and we all ctfu laughing. But one guy in the room decided it was a sign that we shouldn't be watching it and tried to get us to stop when we turned it back on lol We were in FLORIDA and the weather has been bad on and off ALL DAY 😂 All of us were militant atheists at a pretty young age. All came from religious families and all knew better (a power outage in FL is as common as it gets tbh lol) but this one dude left and got really upset about the whole thing. Sad shit this stuff does to folks.

"In Galatians, Paul said he met jesus's brother." So if Paul said he met Harry Potter, you'd believe Harry Potter existed? "I'm saying I'm a rational person." IF you were a rational person, you wouldn't have to say you're a rational person. You could SHOW it. :p "My scientific side..." I think IF you ever had a scientific side, it committed suicide before you called the show. ;)

People do not understand Bob Price's view on the 7 pauline epistles. Bob disputes pauline authorship insofar as he thinks Paul is not a historical person either. The magic seven might have been written by the same person, but not such Paul. Anyway, Bob does think the epistles are patchwork quilts, by marcionite scribes. It's not unheard of. Pretty much the same procedure that happened in the compilation of the book of Isaiah.

The caller is confused, the people in the Bible say that what they experienced is were caused by God, Jesus, Holy Spirits, angels. How then does he says they were unknown experiences like his. Again, how would he conclude that his experiences are caused by the God of the Bible, not Buddah, Allah, Ogun, Nomkhulukwane, Qamata or Mvelingqangi? What made him decide to read the Bible and not other holy books?

How did he rule out: - a power surge - a wet or dry joint on a cable to the bulb - a faulty or wrongly installed or unseated fuse - a bulb that was already on its way out to the end of its life combined with one of the above? - how about the bulb being seating wrong in the socket? Any number of electrical issues would need investigating or ruling out before even poseting anything else! And... 0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0 still do not = 1!!

But here is the thing that people don't seem to think about. The people who wrote about Jesus could have made everything up. I'm not saying that I'm a mythicist but just because someone writes about it doesn't mean it actually happened. Literally it could be complete bullshit. It could be a story it could be a lie it could be a mistake it could be a hundred different things in the mythicist position could still be correct.

In my youth haunted houses was an adventure to me, I definitely understand how the caller feels, it's too easy for us to want assign something magical to the unexplained, it's thrilling, it's exciting, and yes we do exaggerate our story's in an attempt not to look foolish, which I believe the caller was doing "I had all these different experiences", we lie to ourselves believing that lie because we don't want to shatter the magic. story's can also migrate, I was in a house and witnessed a mural on a wall rise to the ceiling, except that never happened, I witnessed no such thing, it was a story told to me when I was a child, but in my magical thinking it became my story, we very easily deceive ourselves no matter how rational we like to think we are, I now prefer the saying "keep an open mind but no so much that your brains falls out."

The written assertion by one person that someone had a brother is a preponderance of evidence? Pretty low standard of evidence. As far as the dog goes -- dogs have a sense of smell far more sensitive than ours. Easy to believe that there was some residue left in that room that repelled the dog. Dead body smell can "soak in" to wall surfaces, ceilings, etc. Documented.
