I’ve lately begun to wonder. Is the world a safer place with mainstream religion? Would Mike the caller, (with no sense of morals without his book; as most christians clueless to the implications when they assert that atheists cannot possibly have any morality,) not be able to curb his free will and commit immoral and harmful acts against mankind? Religion can make good people do bad things but, without religion, would there be more bad people doing bad things? ...wondering...
@dennisjordan59175 жыл бұрын
James Town I really don’t think there are very many “bad people” and the ones that are “bad” are that way because of an abnormality in their brain or mind. Religious people that do harm are at least generally trying to do what they think is right even if they are mistaken. I think people generally bring their own morality to the Bible and then find passages to justify it as opposed to the other way around.

Maybe once, maybe 52 times in a year, maybe over several years or a lifetime. If you listen to someone preaching or teaching you, and they are presenting the material as important and as truth, all it takes is that “click” that occurs in your mind, in your emotions, that hooks into your hopes and your fears, and you will begin to seek out information that confirms those hopes and fears. I've had a near-death experience. You feel an overwhelming sense of peace and satisfaction and joy. The only thing I could liken it to was being hugged and protected by my mother when I was very young - something I hadn't experienced in decades. You see a brightening white light (like coming out of a long dark tunnel). You lose your sense of identity and 'see' yourself (consciousness-wise) from the 'outside'. If you are religious I can understand perfectly why you might consider it being 'perfectly loved' by god/Jesus/etc. Or that you're floating away to heaven/a different dimension. It just seems to be the natural result of a brain in the process of shutting down. Pretty much everyone seems to have this experience (or similar) when they are dying. There is no reason to think there is anything supernatural behind it or about it. And in case anyone's afraid of dying - don't be. It's quite pleasant. Like going to sleep but way more peaceful and fulfilling. Of course I'd rather live but the process of dying isn't anything to be afraid of. We all live forever through the impact (however small) we had on the cosmos in our tiny slice of time.

Apparently the procces of death, and even leading up to death, has shown us that we often start to 'trip' far earlier than was realised. The day before my mother died she was starting to behave strangely, as if she were on drugs, and in effect, she was. The dying process had started, her brain was beginning to release all kinds of natural chemical transmitters, she was starting the final 'trip' the brain has nothing left to lose when death is certain, and as a final farewell it goes completely haywire, which is probably just as well for our last moments, but in near death experiences (that are comparatively rare) we have our brain back to normal function trying to make sense of the highly traumatic thing that has happened to it, I have every sympathy for people who have went through this , which is a thing I hope never to happen to me, but people who have dropped hallucinagenics would probably understand this experience a litte better, but one day, we all have to experience this in one way or another.

@andyman54464 жыл бұрын
@David ClingingSince we don't understand everything about reality, let's say outside of reality as we understand it. Then you don't have to assume it doesn't exist. It could be that you don't know how to verify it's existence.
@andyman54464 жыл бұрын
@David Clinging Are you saying that if a person does not have the ability to understand something then that person should assume that that thing doesn't exist?
@andyman54464 жыл бұрын
@David Clinging I do agree with that. But having zero position is not the same as saying or assuming it doesn't exist as you previously stated. Zero position is actually saying "I don't know" Also, my position was not that it's beyond ANY POSSIBLE comprehension. If that were the case it would be absurd.

There isn't a single religion that would be duplicated by a civilization that evolved in a complete societal and historical vacuum. That civilization would, by nature of the human psyche, create new religions, but our extant religions would become extinct.

@PGraveDigger15 жыл бұрын
It makes sense. Christians usually don't want other christians to watch this show. They ofcourse cannot prevent it, but they can try to put christian ads on the videos of this show to try to prevent christians from losing their faith. In a way it's an admission that this show actually is able to make people lose their faith.
@ricardovonkrypton89085 жыл бұрын
I kinda get it: 1. Religion is a wide and vague topic. 2. Atheists are presumably Christian advertising's target audience. There's no point in advertising to people who already buy your product. Ironically, if theists really understood 'how' to advertise/sell/demonstrate their religion to atheists, they would probably be atheist.

I would be interested in knowing how many people who have NDE’s are convinced of a supernatural realm by the experience. I know lots of people who have had intense experiences on psychedelics and I don’t think any of them have attributed the hallucinations to anything supernatural, but in both states the experience is brought on by a decrease in activity in the default mode network of the brain which is the general “filter” for the brain and is related to the “ego” or sense of self.

This guy may have experienced an OBE, or Lucid Dream. Sometimes termed Astral Projection. I've experienced this hundreds of times between age 22 and 63. I've studied it at some length also. Lots of information online. The author Dennis Wheatley (long since fallen out of fashion) based one of his novels on it. It's no more evidence for Jesus/Christianity than it is for any other man-invented religion. It could be a function of the brain, but it's effing trippy...no question! ps: Jesus was not in evidence. Near death experiences are nothing more than the mental alterations from lack of oxygen (hypoxia).
@hellohandsome98752 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't a lack of oxygen be near death?
@MovieMakingMan2 жыл бұрын
@@hellohandsome9875 No, there are varying levels of oxygen deprivation. I have friends who suffer from hypoxia when they ski the Rockies at 14,000 feet. It’s not near death as in ‘near death experiences’ that are entirely physical reactions with no supernatural implications at all. I’ve experienced hypoxia at NASA and I had a feeling of elation. That’s what people who claim to have near death experiences say they have. But the elation isn’t a god or being beamed to a supernatural place. It’s 100% a physical reaction to oxygen depravation.

I periodically have an experience! One second I am in my everyday routine and then I am on the flight line smelling the plane fuel, it is real, hearing the c130 engine idling, it is absolutely real, feeling the cool breeze, so cold, seeing the injured vets straight from the battlefields of Nam, very real, I don't believe I have ever tasted anything. But it is real, I am there! And when I come too I have an overwhelming dread and fear!! I will always believe it was real even tho I am perfectly well aware I was not there, people tell me I did not move only my eyes glaze over! It is called a flashback a variant of near death or out of body. It is very real, do not try to tell me it was not real! What really happened? The only logical explanation is "I don't know"!

I also had an out of body type experience one time my dad was beating me and kicking me. I was on the kitchen floor under the overturned table that he had flipped over as we were eating. There were mashed potatoes and peas on my face and in my hair. But suddenly it seemed I was up by the too of the refrigerator and I could see him from behind and above his Right side and I could see his belt lashing down on me. I still felt it and so it was like I was in two places at once but like my physical body that could feel pain was on the floor while my physical self that could see was also up by the ceiling. It just lasted for 2 lashes of the belt, then I was only back on the floor hearing mom scream for him to stop. IDK how it happened but analyzing it-I think I may have been holding my breath for pain control for so long that I was oxygen deprived (?) maybe. But I never passed out as far as I could tell (?)...and no one ever told me I was passed out so I don’t think I was.
