Maggie’s Behaviour, the Shelter Dogs Join in, Free Play Moments

Between the more intense activities like lure coursing and Swiss ball, there’s a lot of free play time. In the big paddock, in the playground, the dam and in the big pool.
During this time there’s lots of lovely moments between the dogs but there’s also opportunities to join in for the less socialised dogs in our care.
Maggie joined the pack during this time and we got to see where Maggie is struggling socially.
She is clearly a very happy girl. So so happy it’s just beautiful. A lot like how blissful Miss Violet is.
But her intensity and also her inquisition of dogs that are not similar to her in play style and energy can only really come across as rude, that’s if you are the dog receiving the attention from Maggie.
To be honest she annoyed a number of dogs. To the point they were very politely telling her off. And this is where the danger for Maggie lies. If she were to do this to a dog that wasn’t so highly socialised and tolerant, it would not end well for Maggie.
Take Chance for example. Chance the American Bulldog who is one of the shelter dogs here for training. The intense nippy prodding until she gets a reaction most definitely got a reaction out of Chance. And you can imagine, the many other dogs Maggie would come across that would react similarly.
We can now see why she was not able to be walked or socialised out by the foster carer.
She is so very sweet and someone has just not put in the time with Maggie to socialise her properly and then they’ve given up on her entirely. It’s sad because now the workload for someone to manage this along with her being deaf is quite a lot.
But her happiness is infectious and she’s definitely a very very special girl.

I've got a soft spot for Chance, apparently. He responded right away to your guidance. Seeing him lean into Jason I imagine I'd tip over! I can only imagine it's that much tougher with Maggie because she can't hear the other dogs verbal warnings. It's gotta be confusing for them at first too. The whole pack is amazing! I'm sure Maggie will settle in soon.

Maggie wants to play so badly that she comes on a little strong to some of the dogs. I can imagine all of the sudden being around so many new dogs and just wanting to fit in with the rest of the pack. Her youth and playfulness is going to make her a handful. She is at a wonderful place for learning and socialization.

It gives me such peace knowing Miss Violet and Miss Red are in their forever home at the farm. I had a cat that had been abandoned, and we called her the Little One, while seeing if she belonged to someone. A few weeks later, I couldn't letting her go, and her name stayed Little One forever! I’m sure Maggie was very excited today being around so many other dogs. Especially if she wasn’t able to be in the past. Must be so hard being deaf on top of it. She can’t hear the warnings. Hand signals would work well for Maggie, I used them for my German Shepherd. I first taught her to watch me, then I gave hand signals. A added bonus was she never went to far ahead of me when off the lead, that she couldn’t see my signals. I miss her 💔

I adore Maggie but I can see she has a long road ahead I’m guessing because of her high energy boxer temperament combined with her hearing deficit. In the wrong situation her ‘in your face’ behaviours with dogs who are not HIGHLY socialized and confident could get her injured. Your beautiful rehabilitation farm provides the perfect environment for her to learn some better behaviours. The dogs that really need you, do seem to find you! What a blessing for your community.

When Maggie actually learns how to socialise properly, think of the fun she’s going to have. She’s going to have to learn the hand signals for proper behaviour as well, life will definitely open up for her then. My sister had a deaf staff, who she taught Auslan too. Snowflake was the first staff I actually really met, and I fell in love with her. Her personality was such a gentle girl who loved kids of all ages and standoffish dumb people who didn’t know her breed (me). As she learned Auslan my sisters 3 terriors also learned along side her. Though their hearing was perfect. I think the farm is the perfect place for her to learn that bouncy boxer energy has to be kept in check at times. Though she did show a boxers love of children in her introduction video. I haven’t yet met a boxer who doesn’t love children at any age. I am positive all at the farm will teach Maggie how to behave in with a pack. Plus how to behave when she gets to find a forever family. It will be an absolute joy to watch her during all of this training. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

It’s very easy to see that Maggie is going to need a lot of work but she’s worth it and she will thrive once she learns proper dog etiquette and hand signals and everything else that will be talked to her at the farm. She’s a very young and bouncy puppy who has had a rough start but that doesn’t mean she will have a rough ending because she won’t. She’s at the farm where wonderful things happen and where people will love her while helping her be the best boxer she can be💖 Felt a bit bad for Buddy the retriever because I wondered if he thought he was in trouble when Luke was calling him and that’s why he didn’t go to him right away. But he then realized he wasn’t in trouble and got the reassurance that he needed💖

Maggie May is so happy to find friends. Her jumpy bouncy ways remind me of Tigger. Tigger was a lot to take bouncing all over Winnie the Pooh and his friends. When she saw Chance she thought he looks like me lets play. She needs a friend to guide her. Nice to see Chance and Molly. Maggie is really testing the patience of the dogs. And they all responded pretty well. But you will have your hands full with Maggie being 1. young, 2. a bouncy boxer, and 3. deaf. She couldn’t be at a better place learn manners. Maggie is 2.5 years old. That's 2.5 years of never socializing beyond her litter mates. She is super excited by all the different looking and smelling dogs today. So much so that she gets in their faces in a much too forward manner. I predict a week from today she will have learned her dog world manners. Not a moment too soon. I remember Shadow, and Mollie and Neveah their first days. So ignorant of how to behave properly. But dogs learn super fast. I look forward to next week with Maggie's behavior in the packs.
