From what I heard, academy voters had Bohemian Rhapsody in 2nd place as the winner that year, so it could’ve been MUCH worse😳 And as for Crash winning Best Picture… All I say to that is about 10 years later a survey was done by academy members from that year and they agreed voting for Crash was a mistake.

I was in college when Crash came out, and I took a foreign student I was tutoring in English. It was so bad...if I were by myself, I would have walked out, but I had a guest. And he LOVED it, because coming from outside American culture, the heavy-handed clumsiness of the messages in the movie didn't seem cringey to him. 😭

I agree with you about "Giant" over "Around the World in 80 Days." What was also deserving for Best Picture that year was a film that wasn't nominated for anything, let alone Best Picture. That film is John Ford's "The Searchers," considered one of the best westerns of all time.

I was *so* confident that Brokeback was going to win, I was like “Welp, I’m gonna go pee, I’ll come back in time for the speech.” I came back and was like “….uh, did something happen to Ang Lee?” Even Paul Haggis doesn’t think Crash deserved to win. I think that's why it won; same as Forrest Gump. First successful musical but by musical standards it was pretty poor (same song 3 times) AND the technical advances were such that it was old hat within a couple of years. By the end of the thirties musicals are going all Busby Berkeley. While Broadway Melody is basically one camera pointed at a theatre stage.

I see it less and less as a "gay" love story, and see it as a regular love story that happens to be between two men. People say Brokeback lost because of homophobia, which could very well be true. But it also had a much more depressing ending than Crash, and in the early to mid-2000s the Academy was rewarding depressing movies with best director (Traffic, The Pianist), then choosing more triumphant/entertaining/uplifting films for best picture (Gladiator, Chicago). That all changed by the time No Country for Old Men rolled around.

But when Leo McCarey won best director for it, he said that they gave him the Oscar for the wrong film--he would have liked more recognition for Make Way for Tomorrow. Network should’ve won. Rocky won because it was a populist blockbuster in a time when a lot of American cinema was dark and depressive. That’s not to say it’s bad, but Network is far superior in my opinion.

I think Rocky’s a fine win. I liked Network more, but Rocky was my second choice. And I can understand why it did too. The other 4 nominees that year were very politically charged and critical of society, which may have exhausted people. Rocky was a feel-good independent movie whose premise of a little man overcoming the odds paralleled its campaign of the little film that became the highest grossing film of the year, which likely struck a chord with voters.

I will always defend Shakespeare in Love winning over Saving Private Ryan. Paltrow aside (who was fine, but not Oscar-worthy), the performances were brilliant, especially from renowned scenery-chewers Rush, Dench, and Firth. Even Ben Affleck was great. The screenplay was both clever and funny, although perhaps a few too many in-jokes unless you're a Tudor nerd like me, and along with the score and costumes, easily the best of the year. I can re-watch this film a couple times a year due to the smart, witty dialogue, and great comedy performances. Saving Private Ryan is twenty minutes of extremely loud noise, followed by two hours spent looking for a character we don't even care about. It's dreary.

CODA I thought was deserving of its win mainly because how they cast actual deaf people for the roles of the parents and brother instead of able bodied actors. Disability representation is important and CODA portrayed a realistic view on what the only hearing member of a deaf family has to go through on a daily basis.

It’s a whole different ballgame in terms of script, tone, performances, etc. CODA is a pleasant indie drama typical of Sundance that just so happened to get swept up into a much larger conversation that I don’t think it ever had aspirations to.

Brokeback Mountain was a landmark film but it is horribly flawed. I watched it in the theater with such high expectations only to absolutely hate the movie. Granted, the acting is great but the story falls apart in a dozen ways. It was a cowboy love story that took the cowboys out of the love. For instance it is suggested that they go camping every year to a river to have their romantic time but they NEVER FISH. I don't care if they are making sweet love 23/7 they are cowboys camping my a river with fishing tackle; THEY WOULD FISH!

Well, there is that scene by the creek where Jack suggest to Ennis they live together, but yeah not much fishing. But also even when they were ranching on BBM, it was shown they weren't very good ranchman.

The one that infuriates me is 1984. " Terms of Endearment" won over " The Rigth Stuff" which to me is a perfect film in every way.

Exactly, no comparison. never understood te appeal of Terms of Endurance, an Oscar baiting TV movie with albeit decent performances. The Right Stuff had it;s flaws but had as Gene Siskel said 'the biggest, boldest vision; and is one of the shortest 3-hours of the 80s.

Back in the mid-70s, one of my college professors had the privilege of interviewing Irene Dunne, and I had the pleasure of hearing the tape of that interview. Speaking of "Cimarron," she said she had recently seen a screening of it and felt that neither the film nor her performance had held up very well. (As noted, the film won "Best picture"; Miss Dunne and co-star Richard Dix received acting nominations.)

I'd be really curious to see the vote totals for Brokeback vs. Crash. I know the Academy would never reveal that information, but I've always wondered how close the Best Picture vote was. Did Brokeback lose by only a couple dozen votes or was it a bigger/smaller margin? Interestingly, shortly after Crash won, my high school English teacher (a non-white woman who, as far as I can tell, liked the movie - or at least didn't criticize it) showed it to us in class.

Brian, I have enormous respect for your choices and commentary -- usually. However, I must disagree this time. I loved "Crash" and saw it a few times in the theatre, and now I own the DVD. I also liked "Brokeback Mountain" but not with your kind of passion. I watched Brokeback Mountain again with my wife recently. As a straight man, even though I couldn't relate to the characters in the movie, I did feel a lot of empathy for them. I thought what it did really well is showing this situation from all sides, the relationship between Ennis and Jack obviously but also from their wives perspectives. I felt for them too. But yes a masterful movie Heath and Jake give great performances and yes the BP win is egregious. Crash I remember being a fine movie. I did like some of the performances particularly Matt Dillon. I guess the real question is, Best Actor. Do you give it to Heath over PSH for Capote? Jake should have won over George Clooney.

I agree with this list but switch the order. In a vacuum, without accounting for the other nominees, GIGI is by far my least favorite Best Picture winner. It is an irredeemable slog and that opening song being so creepy and cringe sets the tone. At least the other films, I can see a reason they won, even if I disagree. BROADWAY MELODY was an achievement in sound; CIMMARON, CAVALCADE, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, and THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH are all grandiose epic spectacles of their time; GREEN BOOK, DRIVING MISS DAISY, and CRASH can make Academy members feel like they aren’t racist even though they aren’t honoring the work of people of color; and SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE was at least a decent movie in terms of quality.

First of all thanks for including a few of the very early winners, Most of these lists usually focus on more recent movies. Having seen all these movies over the years, this list is very viable. Personally would not put Crash as number one but understand why it's there. Yes, Brokeback Mountain should unquestionably have won.Your comments about watching the early choices are only for Oscar completests is spot on. Oliver! winning Best Picture over almost anything that year has always been one of my pet peeves. Saw it in it original release and was ready to leave by intermission (but didn't). have often referred to it as 'Pukiver" Funny Girl may not be historically accurate but it is a much better directed movie, by the legendary William Wyler,than the stiff staging by Carol Reed,

I enjoyed Oliver! as a kid, but haven't watched it since. I tried to watch 2001 twice but literally fell asleep once and I think the other time I started reading a newspaper halfway through. Of course, these were both on TV and many years later - I'm sure for the original audience seeing it on a big screen the visuals were amazing, but the "story" was dull, dull, dull. From what I have read about it, the final part with HAL and such sounds interesting, but I never got that far.

@ Blackkklansman was not a great film. But it has twice the ambition that a patronizing film like Green Book had. It was Roma, The Favorite, Cold War and Shoplifters that were superior to anything else that were nominated that year. But Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody were especially bad.

I still remembered i was Deversated Dune part 1 lost to CODA. It was like The Equilivant of a horse of that you bet on, fallen over the last Hurdel. I thought it was home and dry, and i can tell i was very upset by it.

Generally speaking Horror,Fantasy and Sci-fi films rarely win best picture/director by the academy (cuz they value more dramatic movies) There’s ofc rare wins here and there like Silence of the Lambs and LOTR but these are rare moments where the film checks all boxes of Oscar bait
