I met Carl once during my first month of following Jesus. I didn't know much about church culture back then, especially the "celebrity" aspect of it. One day, I was backstage because I had been asked to film and help out. I was standing in the hallway when Carl had just finished speaking. He had his church crew with him, and honestly, it looked a bit intimidating. Looking back, I remember there was this aura in the air that you couldn't approach him unless you were close to him. But I was so oblivious at the time (honestly, praise God, because that culture is wack) that I just walked up and shared a bit of my testimony with him. I could sense the people around me didn't like what I did, but when I was talking to Carl, he made me feel so seen and embraced me with a huge hug. It was exactly what I needed at that time. I owe a lot to Carl for helping lay the foundations of my faith with Jesus. Look, we all mess up, some more than others. But dang, man, Carl, I pray God guides you and your family through this new journey. May God be glorified through your new adventure

At the time when the news broke out of what happened I thankfully was in therapy and I was able to navigate through it in a healthy way and even though I decided to no longer be part of Hillsong I still kept my faith stronger and believing in God. When John Bevere asked Jim Bakker “when did you fall out of love with Jesus”. The great evangelist who was now in jail responded and said “Never, I always loved Him, all the way through. @@iamempressires333 Everyone can be tempted into sin and no one on the planet is living a sin-free life, okay fair enough. But I can't wrap my head around the fact that we are merely brushing off a married man who went out of his way to meet, flirt, get close and eventually have sex with someone, as 'he got tempted'. I am sorry, but the amount of effort that goes into this particular sin to bear fruit doesn't do any justice to the phrase 'ohh I fell short'. This screams to me a lack of conviction in your beliefs in the first place, just like Ravi Zacharias. How could you be a preacher, someone who is supposed to have studied the word of God in its entirety at an incredible depth and not once during the process of committing the ultimate sin of adultery were you not convicted? And when I say adultery, I am going back to the Old Testament definition of a physical act. Not even the one Jesus gave us.

From this conversation, I've learned that we all have access to God regardless of our title or position. As a man, it's important to say what you mean and mean what you say. When you make a mistake, God can save and redeem you, but you will still face the consequences. If you hang in there, you may lose everything, but your testimony will be one that can change lives and show the ultimate power of God's word.

The moment Jesus died on the cross, the veil at the temple tore open. This was a significant symbol that the veil that separated us from God is now open. Before that only certain specific - I think it was the Levite (?) Priests were allowed into that inner sanctum inside the temple. There they would offer sacrifices on behalf of the community or congregation and they would have a moment with God in there amd come out with His advice, or to share the wisdom they gained there. But that veil tearing reveals the heart of God to each of us who believe so we no longer require a religious representative to carry our concerns to God, but we can accept His guidance personally. No more separation from the Holy Spirit.

Yeah so many families are going through stuff like this. And I can't imagine the pressures as an official, church sanctioned representative of God to live daily by that higher standard of Heaven. But that too is a choice, right? A position he applied to. The heat is real. You lead a popular church, the heat is big time. I'm sure Satan gets your number and knows what influences will tempt you to disavowe the Lord as authority in your life. Knows by what you are influenced by.

The Lentz’s told this as a human-centric story. I rejoice for redemption. But it made me sad to watch this video, because this should have been a story about JESUS, His relentless pursuit of us, and the saving power of His blood (in more than just subtext). Even the opening line of the conversation (2:04) uses subtle "playing-the-victim" motifs (us against the people trying to "control the real narrative" of our lives) and frames the story as a human struggle of overcoming ("you get up and fight and try to break through"). Carl talks about the desired outcome of this podcast as people seeing the other side of the story (2:43) and seeing "what is possible when you work hard at a relationship" (4:26). Their journey is framed as human accomplishment (8:36) - "We waited so long to talk because we had a bigger priority, which was to save our family. More accurately, for me to save my own life, and then work to try to save our marriage, and then work to try to save our family." I'm trying to be generous with the writing of this comment, but there is only so much I can do when the name of God isn’t uttered until fourteen minutes thirty four seconds into the video. He says “by the grace of God” they had humans step in and help them and give them a human plan and provide human mentorship, as they “figure out what to do” and go “bit by bit” (14:34). Carl says his actions caused “a whole lot of pain for a whole lot of people” (19:42), but doesn’t here or anywhere in the video verbally recognize his actions as a sin against God. Second brief mention of the name of God (24:22). Any Christian would affirm our role in choosing obedience and repentance, but this story is told so far in the human-centric direction we lose all redemptive orientation. Carl says, “How do you get a second chance? Choose it” (24:56). Not sure why Laura puts “sins” in air quotes, hopefully just a mistake (40:42). Laura to Carl, regarding her ability to feel completely safe with him, “That’s a lot of work on your end… you show up every day in doing the work… a lot of men don’t choose to do that” (43:25). Laura on why she stayed, “I just chose very early on in this situation to be like, ‘I don’t want to live with a broken, bitter heart.’ And so I did the work myself” (46:38). I can’t help but write that the mention of God’s name seems more like a cliché in a statement like this (Carl to Laura, seemingly catching himself from leaving God out of it), “You are so strong, where I feel like God spared your sanity” (52:19). Talking about generational trauma, “And so, we chose to break it. And so I did my work” (54:43). The name of God is mentioned only ten times in the entire video. The name of JESUS is invoked once, in a description of what Carl preached about (58:52). Carl and Laura said many true and good things. But they made this a human story when it should have been about Jesus.

It bummed me out so much watching this today. I totally believe in therapy. I totally believe in doing the hard work of healing. But it's JESUS that brings transformation, not my work. And it's by JESUS's blood I have redemption and justification and even the ability to turn in repentance to a loving God my heart of flesh would reject in its own strength.

I was a part of Hillsong from 2013-2020. I started in NYC, but then went to the NJ campus once they opened in Nov. 2013. I served in many aspects. Was very involved. I met many friends there who I am still friends with to this day. When this blew up in 2020, it was huge for us at the church. It was very sensationalized in the media. Some stories outlandish and just spun into a weird perspective. But, for those who actually attended and were a part of this community, it was different. The church dissolved in many ways in NYC/NJ. (there is still a small Hillsong that exists, but nothing like before.) I'm glad to see Carl and Laura taking this into their own hands and telling their truth. It is not easy to come back after mistakes, to put yourself in the spotlight for everyone to judge, assume, and basically "stone" you. I can't imagine that this was easy at all on a personal level. I respect their willingness to be open and vulnerable and raw. But, here's the thing; Community is necessary. Pastor's are important. But neither trump a relationship with God. We are human (not excusing anything by any means) so we fail and make mistakes. It's in the aftermath that determines the outcome of our path. And are we not called to extend grace and forgiveness? Albeit very difficult. This was a very confusing time. You are taught to live a certain way. Uphold certain standards. You're taught about relationships and conduct. And when those are teaching the lessons fail, it can rock your world. But, it just goes to reinforce that no matter the 'title' or position, we are just human beings living in this world. The focus should be on God him self vs idolizing a person. I admire their candidness. I'll be watching all episodes, curious to see what I can learn through them, and what lessons I can implement in my own life. There is redemption, healing and a light at the end of the tunnel. I pray their podcast does some good in the world. I trust it'll help many people. xoxo

I appreciate the discussion but I quickly realized that I have to adjust my expectations in order to continue watching this. She asked him some very direct and straight forward questions and some of his responses were so long winded that he either skirted around the answer or he didn't directly answer the question at all. These kinds of talks are tough even after making ground in the healing process, but there were multiple times I found myself saying "just answer the question."

I felt the same way, but i quickly realized that this can't be the first time they are having this discussion and if he had not answered some of these questions well and satisfactory during those discussions, they will not be here. Perhaps, he has to answer more circumspectly because this is public and there is a limit to the vulnerability that can be shown in public. The most important thing for them is their lives, kids and family and they still have to protect them from the public

Thank you to both of you for sharing this. This is my story as well. I’m a pastor and my wife was the one who had an affair. But we worked hard through our marriage as well and we are in a place where both of us are living in God’s grace and healing. I listen to this and i feel all the questions and emotions shared- vibes with me. People need to be brave- if they can work on the reconciliation process and truth telling. All hard and the hurt processing and listening. But there is hope for working on a NEW journey. It is possible. ❤

I met and heard you preach several times in my church Grace City Church in Lakeland, FL. I thank you both for your honesty and humility in this podcast. It was difficult to hear what you did to your wife and the church after it happened. Carl you are right I felt betrayed by your actions especially when my spouse also committed infidelity in our marriage and the church help my marriage reconcile, but then several years later I would be betrayed again from my spouse. But I want you to know I forgive you. I thank you for your apology. I thank you both for doing this podcast. I realized listening to Laura that I have this trauma of broken trust from my ex wife. I need to talk about it to a professional because the betrayal trauma has crept into my new marriage. I'm questioning my spouse's integrity at all levels and it's wrong and unfair to her. So thank you for doing this podcast and opening up to everyone about your recovery. It has made me do an internal look at myself at 3:51am. I know God used this podcast to reach me to tell me that the argument I had the night before with my wife was not what should have happened. That the devil is trying to slowly use my trauma against me. That isn't going to happen now. God bless you both and I look forward to more episodes.

This! As a clinical therapist a follower of Jesus, and a past ministry leader I want you to know you both are brave strong and a brilliant example of what the ‘church’ needs. I understand both from a clinical lens and former leader what did and is continuing to happen. I believe you both have been used and will continue to be used by being real having hard conversations and allowing even the ugly parts to always be heard. This to me is church! Proud of you both for using your voice for no other reason but to show others how to heal and that it’s ok to talk about rather than avoiding or using spiritual bypassing. As a clinician it was heartbreaking to see but thankful you both were brave enough to put yourself in a position that opened others eyes to more than just your mistakes. Thanks for being real being vulnerable and holding “church.”

Halfway into this, and my heart is melting. As a fellow redeemed sinner and church leader , I can relate to struggling in private, wrestling with issues of one's heart while loving on people and serving them even when bleeding. I hurt a lot watching this unfold. My kids were heartbroken because they'd go to Hillsong in NY all the time. I sincerely pray the Lord continues to shine His face upon your family. Ministry is secondary. Saving one's soul and family are worth everything. May the Lord continue to order your steps and keep you in His perfect peace. God bless you.

Thank you to both of you! I’ve watched the Hillsong saga, been in two churches with pastors that abused their authority and lacked integrity. Both churches had preaching that was less than Biblical as well. Seeing a pastor that fell and takes responsibility, and seeing a wife that fights through the pain to see her husband not only take responsibility, but work to reconcile how he can gives hope. You are setting an example to all of us that our sins are our responsibility and it hurts others and many times those closest to us, but through reconciliation, owning our sin, repenting and moving forward, much can happen. I have deep respect for you both, Carl for your honesty and taking responsibility and Laura for showing us a glimpse of Jesus and how He loved us regardless of our sins to the point of dying for us.

I love that they’re healing. I love love love that he received help. But this entire podcast was about them, with maybe one or two mentions about God? It was him explaining how he’s changed and it took 25mins to mention God. Which I totally understand, but from a former pastor, it just felt like a podcast to regain his reputation instead of to glorify God. It felt like a celebrity apology rather than an expression of heartfelt godly transformation 😭 It felt like a repentant story without the power of God. If your story of redemption has more to do with your own power and grit than the power of the Holy Spirit, then is this truly a redemption story or just a story of changed behavior? Purely talking in a Christian sense of the word redemption. I never want my own testimony to be more about me, than the power of God. Because at the end of the day, it’s not about me. My life has one point to it, and it’s to point to Him. To glorify him. To praise him. Especially in times where I trip and fall. When I get back up, it’s to shout HIS name even louder than before I stumbled. Honestly, I don’t know. Purely my own thoughts on the podcast! Praying continually for them and their beautiful family!! ❤

It helps me to more clearly own what I did. It seems that you were trying to make the word sin parenthetical. Call a thing a thing, Carl. Don’t euphemise it. Hard to hear Laura say that his natural personality was to protect and justify...that doesn't really align with someone who was currently being exposed for having multiple affairs at the time and other serious boundaries being crossed. Protection and justice??? Just don't do the things your doing validates that more than struggling with not saying anything to defend your reputation when your truly guilty? You should stay quiet in that situation regardless of who says an "off" thing. That's true brokenness. Feels like there is still an unhealthy mindset that needs to make Carl look good even while his actions were bad.

He has a long journey to go on- begin with making space for his wife, letting her process and share her heart, letting her finish her sentences and not talk over her, especially the part of their kids. This is an hour of him preaching/ teaching- he’s gifted, absolutely. But this video shows more of his gifting than the actual story of what happened. Laura asks him: how can you stand in stage and preach but continue that relationship? He doesn’t answer this. I don’t think he knows himself.

Im glad to see they are on a journey of healing (because of God's love and mercy for us sinners). The difference between the late David Wilkerson and his church in NYC was that David lived a life of holiness and the fear of God. There were no VIP rooms or catering to celebrities and wealthy "hip" people. Its a sad culture that i see in many mega minustries and mega churches. Its run like a business. Hopefully his eyes are open to this and he's satisfied living as a humble man walking with his Lord. I wish this family all the best.

WOW. I have never listened to Carl before, not even really familiar with this story. Observe, there is a cursory mention of God, interesting that there is no mention of JESUS CHRIST's - REDEMPTION ALONE. In the last two minutes he does say "who JESUS is" with regard to his preaching, but that is it. What IS he saying here? It's all about HIM: "we will get up again, our story, our humiliation, we will help people because of this. How lonely we were, how hard it was for us." POOR US. We can be a part people's lives through sharing this. "Save MY life, save MY reputation, salvage My image, save MY marriage, My platform. My family..."Me being a control guy", this isn't fair. WE WE WE (deflection that loops in his wife in his SIN to dilute it). While he talks about his 'fault'...it's clear it's really about HIS embarrassment, his humiliation, people don't understand, people are lying about me/us, I can't control what people think. He "dedicated his life to being a 'light' in the church." "When you are in a situation that is 'dishonest' " - NO MENTION of the word SIN - he never calls it SIN - she does, he doesn't.

Or ....What is it called to remove someone from the church? excommunication, form of ecclesiastical censure by which a person is excluded from the communion of believers, the rites or sacraments of a church, and the rights of church membership but not necessarily from membership in the church as such.

I can tell you that I did not follow Carl Lentz until he cheated on his wife and his entire congregation turned on him. I always thought his faith was earnest, but a little too rock star for me. But when he fell, is when I started praying for him and DM'ing my prayers to him because I know that type of pain and hurt. When you mess up, some Christians will act like you are the scum of the earth. They forget seventy times seven and how Jesus treated people and cast you out. But thank you God for breaking Carl down to save him. You're children needed to see how you can tear us down to rebuild us to be stronger. Like an out of work muscle when you finally go back to the gym. That muscles tears apart, aches, and is sore for days. But joy comes in the morning when you can move again with stronger muscles ready to bare weight.

His entire congregation didn’t turn on him. For years people suffered under his ministry and inappropriate behaviour even when they were notify leadership. Even his own leader couldn’t talk to him. I truly believe that God can forgive and restore. But every time one of these men fall they seem to need to air it on social media or television etc they never can seem to stay out of the media. He didn’t honestly confess he got caught and not for the first time. As spiritual leader and pastor he should never be back in the pulpit I am not saying he can’t do ministry but clearly he couldn’t handle the spotlight. He abused people, and made a complete mockery of marriage and is biblically is disqualified to take up another post as a pastor.

«If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.» ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭NLT‬‬ This couple is courageous enough to come into light and rely on the goodness of God. And they WILL endure.

Wow, this episode exudes God’s grace. Incredible, what a beautiful picture of humility and forgiveness. We need more transparency like this, the Christian life isn’t always linear.

GRACE UPON GRACE is what people need to take away from this, not condemnation. Our whole salvation depends on it 🙏. Good job stepping out in faith, humility, and trust in God to restore all things. May He bless your family.

I have a very honest and real question, if Carl hadn't got caught, would he still be doing it? That's probably a question people are reluctant to ask.

Hillsong has been a decadent, celebrity, sensuality show. Nothing but God outing them all could stop the show.

Carl and Laura, thank you for your strength and believing in who God made you to be. For a person who has been where you have been in this particular situation, the pain runs deep. Our God is a redeemer and loves us in every situation.

Watching this has made me so emotional. I have been hurt and betrayed by those who claim to be Christians (I'm a Christian myself) and have not had the "full circle" moment that we get to witness here. So many try to bypass the difficulty to rush the "full circle" experience. There has been a lot of trust destroyed + time and fruit can only tell where this will go. But as I listen to this, I can't help but witness the true GRACE of God. The undeserved favor. May those of us who have been burned never become so hardened that we miss out what God is doing. God is clearly doing something here. Thank you for letting us watch this story unfold + putting yourselves out here like this.

Mistakes like getting a math problem wrong by not carrying over the one? That would be an accidental mishap. Or is it a conscious decision? There is a difference.
