About 40 years ago I worked in a Navy R&D facility that started using some of the very earliest prototype lithium batteries which were made by GTE. I don't remember the exact chemistry but it was a double D size that was 3.6V/10Ahr. Massive capacity for the day. Turned out that GTE never tested the proto batteries for what happens if they got shorted. Since we were going to be putting the batteries in things that would be in salt water, we did. They EXPLODED with a force equivalent to 1/3 stick of dynamite. GTE later solved that minor testing oversight. I believe they put a compound into the mix which impedes the rate of discharge so they won't explode. I believe that's true for most (all?) lithium batteries. Now they can just overheat and catch fire.

You cannot charge a lithium battery via a tesla coil because of the floating voltage. The voltage of tesla coil is high but the circuit just isn't complete. There would be no current flow and no overcharge. To actually overcharge a battery charge it fully, then connect it to an unregulated DC power supply. The battery would heat up and swell. That's when you know that you have done it right.
@Yonatan246 жыл бұрын
Which... Is why he didn't die?
@chronically_late6 жыл бұрын
Considering it's a Tesla coil you can touch with your bare hands, I don't expect there to be much current that you could actually charge a batterie with anyway. Even if it would have been setup correctly.
@BHAVYAMATHURBEE6 жыл бұрын
Never made an argument on energy transfer. I simply said that it is not how a battery can be charged. Trust me I'm an engineer. Another thing, believe it or not tesla coils like van de graff generators don't provide any current. A HV transformer simply doesn't have current delivering capacity at low power high voltage scenarios.

Future reference. Be careful with lead acid batteries near ignition sources. They can be explosive due to Hydrogen and oxygen produced when charging. The Li Po igniting would have been uneventful compared to the HHO 12 volt blowing up.

I remember attempting to replace the lithium battery in my old phone. I had to use a knife to separate the battery from the case because Apple uses an absurd amount of glue to hold them in place. Anyway, I poked a hole in the battery, magic smoke went everywhere, and I was sick for the rest of the day because apparently your not supposed to breath that smoke in
@OcarinaOfVali2 жыл бұрын
You never need to use a knife. These batteries have these gum like strips on the back. Pull them up and the battery comes lose

Really interesting! You could do a followup on what is the most effective way to put out a fire in such a high energy dense material. Is spraying it with a hose good enough? Do you need to dump it in a bucket of water for better/faster heat extraction? Is water actually a bad idea altogether because ( just guessing here) it reacts with lithium?
