I live in Oregon and that octagonal building in the Columbia river gorge is called Crown Point. When Mt. St. Helens blew its top my son and I jumped into the car to get to Crown Point. It was nearly due south of the mountain and I will never forget the sight. There was no chance we could see the mountain on the other side of the river but the ash ejection cloud was the most powerful thing I have and ever will witness on this planet. Ungodly malevolent feeling. We live in the Willamette valley in the western half of the state in the big trees. We woke up at the beach one morning and by later that night were skiing down Mt Hood. We are about equidistant from either the beach or the mountains and it is less than 80 miles from either one from our house. Perfection. The eastern half of the state is desert. I don't do desert. I prefer the big ancient Douglas Fir trees. Come to Oregon sometime and see Crater Lake and the Oregon Caves, miles of white sand beaches that are by state law, 100% free access to the public.

It is far from a land that stereotypes would suggest is all ice and igloos. It is also a land that is teeming with more wildlife than any other state, as man has had far less impact on it. Climate zones within the state vary radically. From moderate and damp year-round in the south east, cold, with heavy snow in the winter in the south Central, while mild in the summertime, yet in the interior, they see the most extreme temperatures between winter and summer of anywhere on earth, seeing temperatures as cold as -80° in the winter, and up to 95° in the summertime. They figured out all 7200 Philippine islands can fit in Colorado. I drove over the Rocky Mountains in Colorado before and reach an elevation of over 14,000 feet above sea level. If you have breathing problems like asthma you probably shouldn't go up that high, you could suffer from apoxia and pass out. It's a super curvy road and has places where you can pull off the road and take in the views.

I live in SW Wisconsin. It is known as the "Driftless Region". There never were glaciers here, as a result the earth surface was never "scraped" flat, there are rolling hills, valleys, rivers, lakes. Beautiful.

The building on the round curved road in Oregon is the Vista House at Crown Point. It is a viewing area. Stunning view up the Columbia river gorge. Built during the early part of the 1900's as a roadside stop for the old East/West Columbia River Highway there. Still beautiful. And yes, the building has a basement/cellar, but it is nothing too deep or interesting, which takes nothing away from the rest. Lovely place to stop and look.

South Carolina and North Carolina are beautiful. Great food too. But I think it's strange that he complained about hiking up Diamond Head, Leahi Crater BTW, because it's "elbow to elbow". Well perhaps it was one particular day for him. But I've never seen it like that. The only way I can imagine it being crowded is if he was trying only to stand at one of the old platform spots. But you don't need to stand there. You've got the entire ridge to spread out on. Then he says go to Napa Valley which has got to be one of the most overcrowded, expensive tourist places ever. If you go there you Must only do it off season. Go to Sonoma. While there's still plenty of people at least you have some peace and experience what Napa once was.

That’s funny what you called a viewing platform in Oregon in the Columbia River gorge is a place called rooster rock and is basically exactly that… pretty park and stuff. That’s where at sunset my husband told me he loved me for the first time 18 years ago 🙂

I’m biased but I would have to mention the state of Wisconsin. After Michigan it has the 2nd most Great Lakes shoreline. It also has something like 11,000 inland lakes. I live in Milwaukee, a large city on the western shores of Lake Michigan. Within 20 miles from my residence my family has a lake cottage on Waubeesee Lake. It’s a small (129 acres) but deep (80 feet) glacially formed lake but it’s like being in a different world than in the city. It’s my favorite place to be!

I grew up in Marin County which is what is on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Sandwiched between San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma Valley. I have been to all the places mentioned and more it's amazing!!!!! P.s. I was born in Oklahoma and live there now, and I can say there are beautiful places here..I mean we have wild mustang horses!!! Much love to you guys, my husband and I love your channel! Kisses for Archie! Respect from an Okie born Cali raised woman!

You have extra consideration for a trip with a little one. I did a three week car trip from Michigan to Montana with a planned 5 day backpack into the mountains when my kids were 4 and 1. But I knew they traveled well and we practiced hiking and camping. And when the mountain we were on caught fire during our dinner we had backup plans. Many kids can't handled the long hours tied into a car seat, many parents might want less planning.

Hey Millie, I agree with you about it taking so little of a stage set. I like technology, but it sure is nice to see how they did it back then. I hope all is well.

Beesleys, though CA is beautiful, I wouldn't include Hollywood as one of the eyepoppers. It's a neighborhood in LA that's kind of dumpy nowadays. At 2:44 is something found on the Navajo Res. right on the AZ/UT line--Monument Valley--absolutely stunning! Old Faithful is in WY, in the SW quadrant of the park, around 40 mi./64 km. S of the MT state line. There's another national park on the Canadian border, with a twin in Canada, by the name of Glacier. The Canadian version is Waterton Lakes. Side note for no extra charge: MT is almost the same size as Germany. Re. Mackinac Is., in the winter, because of all the nearby water, they get a ton of snow. Then, because they have no motorized vehicles allowed (except in winter), the kids are taken to school via snowmobile. In the Oregon section, he mentioned Lewis and Clark, who were commissioned by Pres. Andrew Jackson in 1803 (?) to check out the recently acquired Louisiana Purchase. Monument Valley is on the Navajo Reservation. Alaska has 4 seasons like everywhere else. On the winter solstice, the sun doesn't come up in Fairbanks and north, and it can get to 40 below or colder there. However, in the Panhandle, it's very mild on the same day, with much more rain than snow, and Anchorage is about the climate of Minneapolis. At 29:15 is Manawaiopuna Falls (mah-nah-vie-oh-POO-nah), which was seen in Jurassic Park. Re. the small number of votes, don't forget that each person in the 4000 voted for 10 states, so most, if not all of them, used up a minimum of 1000 votes. CA has more national parks than any other state: Lassen Volcanic, Redwood, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Channel Islands, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, and Pinnacles.

Having lived in Alaska for several years, I cannot believe only the Aleutian Islands were mentioned for cruising. The mountains in Anchorage was skipped. The midnight sun in Fairbanks was skipped, oh my god. But I have also lived in Wyoming and loved it, Yellowstone was amazing. I LOVED Yellowstone. I live in Ohio now and the scenery isn’t on par with some others but you can’t beat the affordability lol. I love it. Alaska is definitely the prettiest state, though. Also, Arizona wasn’t on here and it’s gorgeous, too. Lol too many states.

They missed a LOT o Michigan's greatest things. Big Spring Kitch-iti-kipi is the largest fresh water spring east of the Mississippi....you can see the sand bubbling up 40-50 feet below crystal clear water (I grew of next to there). There's also Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Lake Superior....Sleeping Bear Dunes....Waterfalls all over the place, etc.

I’ve lived in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California and Silicon Valley. My dad was from Napa Valley (1920)… so yes California is beautiful if you know where to go. I live in Colorado now and don’t have to think much about where to go for peace and beauty. I go outside and see the front range of the Rocky Mountains, clear sky stretching out forever and no airplane noise.
