The Era of Serato is over... Rekordbox is officially the new King

On todays show I discuss the biggest news of the year Serato was sold to Rekordbox and what this means to the dj community
Pioneer DJ’s hardware controllers have long been compatible with Serato’s software, so the acquisition certainly makes sense. Serato also develops several pieces of music production software: Studio, Sample and Pitch ‘n Time.
Commenting on the news, Yoshinori Kataoka, President and CEO of AlphaTheta, said: "I am delighted to announce the acquisition of Serato. Through extensive discussions within our company and with Serato's management team, we have been exploring new ways to contribute to the industry. Bringing Serato into the AlphaTheta Group will lead to new synergies and significant technological innovations, adding continued value to the community."
Young Ly, CEO of Serato, added: "Serato has enjoyed a 25 year history of success that is driven by a single-minded focus on serving DJs, producers and artists. We are incredibly proud of both the strength of our business as well as the community that surrounds our brand. Today, we are excited to deepen our long-standing partnership with AlphaTheta, accelerating how we create value for our users and the industry.”
AlphaTheta now owns all of Serato’s shares, but says that the company - which is based in Auckland, New Zealand - will continue to operate as a separate brand.

They honestly might have just wanted STEMS from Serato and to capture their cash flow. It's totally possible that they let Serato continue to be Serato. Pioneer mostly seems to be trending towards standalone CDJ / USB workflow to use for the EDM and Festival crowd. A lot of Techno is done with Traktor and MIDI controllers, using Xone 96's anyway. And that market isn't complaining about flexible beat grids... In other news, you can spin House with anything. Enhance Rekordbox for what they consider niche "Open Format" and Turntablism? Not sure that makes business sense. Weddings? buy an all in one. The market is segmented and although this might seem like a power move on the surface, it just might be a pragmatic cash flow move, so Pioneer can continue to fund development and cement their position as the "One stop shop" Time will tell 🙂

I think pioneer don’t like competition in my opinion they so selfish. But I think that other company like Denon,numark,rane and reloop will find the way to create their own software and I will go even more far they should join and fight back. Union make the power 💪💪💪

Pioneer DJ and Serato are sister companies. Alpha Theta is the parent company. Like InMusic has a catalog of companies. They will still be standalone companies.

@DJKeo made some awesome points. If you are a Serato user, you might want to listen. I know been in the business world that there is no way Serato is under AphaThea (Pioneer's parent company) will continue to support third-party DJ hardware companies. Pioneer DJ will integrate Serato into the Rekordbox DJ system and it's a wrap. I am already seeing videos of DJs under Serato's bellyaching and butt hurt because the big bad Pioneer now owns their beloved software. Do you know who is not worried about this move? Pioneer DJ/Rekordbox users like myself and Denon/Numark (companies owned by InMuisc). I know for certain InMusic saw the writing on the way and is in the works to make Engine DJ a fully functional DJ software. Will they plan to offer license to other DJ hardware companies to replace Serato? That's a possibility or they can just keep it in House. We will have to see how this pans out but again as a Pioneer/RB user, it's a win!!

DJay Pro AI is a great alternative. I’m a Serato user and have it as a backup. I downloaded Rekordbox when it came to iOS earlier this year. Like it but don’t own any devices. I’m prolly going to get a DDJ-400 since I already have a RANE ONE & Pioneer DJ DDJ-REV1 which I love them both for specific use cases. One is my flagship the other my workhorse LOL 😂. Excellent video.

I’m afraid Engine OS may be too behind in feature set to really pose a threat to Rekordbox any time soon even if they made a performable desktop version. InMusic might be better off trying to acquire VDJ, but that will introduce other problems in the industry.

@@risquedj I own a Prime 2 and a prime go and there a bunch of things Engine OS should add. Many things are simple workflow management features such as auto gain, and searching within a specific playlist. I use VDJ with both of my systems and only use the standalone as backup if something happens to my computer. It’s getting better but it’s just not there yet.

There is a looong way to go before the actual Dj World makes a complete transition over to any other software than Serato Dj Pro. It's the only software found in almost every Big Dj line up across the world. Many djs use Engine, Tracktor, VDJ, ADjay, or whatever for their personal sets, but use Serato Dj for continuity in big lineups. This is mostly for small & solo acts, and it doesn't matter what you rock on. If I'm the only one in the line up I can use Sl1200s with actual vinyl. A bit harder to do in a Big Line up where working together is critically important.

That’s also a brilliant point. To make rekordbox more widespread, even though they said serato will still be ran separately, but it’s pioneer… those mfs can change their mind at anytime. Although in terms of being the bad guy, at this point you know pioneer don’t gaf. Pioneer don’t compromise for anyone, they do what they do, if you like it cool, if you don’t cool. That’s always been their approach.

Like I said in the video when you are part of the machine do you machine things by accident and don't even realize it. They are already the bad guy in the DJ community. For me logically it makes zero sense to keep both software they both do the same thing and they are both on the same hardware , you are now paying two different software teams for no reason.

It’s kind of redundant for pioneer to have both software companies running at the same time with 2 sets of engineers and developers working on two different platforms. I think they bought them for the components and could care less about what happens to the platform in the long run.

Traktor need to play nice with Phase asap. Its still the superior product for scratching in terms of sound quality but it's lack of compatibility with other firms has hurt it over the years. They also own Izotope so they can compete in the stems realm. I could care less about controllers. Traktor will still work with any mixer it will just require an external interface like it always has.

It's pretty clear that the ONLY reason inmusic hadn't released engine prime as a stand alone version was to avoid pissing off Serato. They don't have to worry about that anymore. Lol Your final question - about locking down the market - that's pretty much was traktor tried and failed. And destroyed their #1 position in software. But their hardware stake was less than ideal. Pioneer is now holding #1 hardware and software. They won't have the same issues. So I have to moved from traktor to vdj after a nearly disastrous gig in Florida this year. I appreciate vdj, but am not really a fan. I would purchase a copy of engine to run on my system. Immediately. Without reservation. I know everyone "knows" this is bad news. But as you pointed out years ago, the writing was on the wall when rekordbox 1.0 was released. It was also clear what inmusic was doing when they released the sc5000 x1800. These are the very definition of "exciting times" applied to the world of DJ and musical entertainment. Cool stuff comes from such times. I'm anxious to see what's next.

I totally agree. Pioneer will integrate everything into rekordbox. That’s the whole friggin point of buying Serato, they were their biggest competition. At least they’ll put serato on a phone. I’ve always wanted that so I can organize music on the go. But yeah we need competition in the industry amongst software but yeah. Let’s hope for the best. You’re not hating. Pioneer MIGHT not open it’s software to everyone, but it will go against them and they might have to open it back to everyone with whatever gear.

The support may be gone in 2 years but the software should work since it's downloaded to your laptop...like Serato Live, support was gone but it worked until the transition to DJ. I would keep the last version of Serato DJ, don't let your computer update and continue to use Serato DJ until InMusic gets that Engine working, flawlessly with InMusic equipment and other manufacturer's except Pio. VDJ may be next to be scoped up...in the meantime, will Serato loyalist make the jump to RekordBox, maybe, it would seem the logical move...time will tell. I do believe, like you, there needs to be some healthy competition in this space. Is Pioneer becoming SkyNet, terminating all the competition or the Borg....either way, it's bad.

We tiny consumers in comparison can only sit back and watch some of these giant companies gobbling up the smaller ones. Beats bitten and swallowed up by giants Apple and so on.. But on further analysis on the positive side the 'deal' Serato was offered must have been impossible to refuse! you forgot virtual dj and DJay Pro AI, and a few more software out there, Virtual DJ will take over the industry if Pioneer dismantles Serato, you have to remember that pioneers think that because they have the standard in clubs and keep using old tech they can control the industry, but the price of everything will drive the industry not the software or hardware, is not like they make the only good system, also you have to remember that everyone is becoming a social media DJ and does people won't want to spend a ton of money on system and software.

So as long as some of public still chooses Serato they will keep Serato. And as long as you have fake DJs not taking the time to learn manually there will still be a need for the software. not that I don't use the software but I'm 67 years old and I was in the clubs from 76 and start DJing in 74. So I started with vinyl and used three Technic 1600 turntables and back then there was no software

I think pioneer don’t like competition in my opinion they so selfish. But I think that other company like Denon,numark,rane and reloop will find the way to create their own software and I will go even more far they should join and fight back. Union make the power 💪💪💪
