I think one of the reasons why I love kat as a character so much is because unlike the usual “not like other girls” trope where the character is dripping from head to toe with misogyny, kat is different and yet doesn’t think she’s better than everyone for it. She’s a tomboy but doesn’t shy away from her girly side, she’s independent yet doesn’t act like she would rather stick her hand in a blender than be wooed by a guy ( like the not like other girls ) and that is why ms Stratford shaped my entire existence because I love her ( and her fictional boyfriend but mostly her ). Thank you for coming to my ted talk

One aspect of this movie that I appreciated was that Kat doesn't fall for Patrick just because he's a "Bad Boy." She's rather turned off by him when she thinks that he's a jerk, and it isn't until he opens up his softer side to her that she begins to warm up to him.
@TheBlushBunny2 жыл бұрын
Refreshing to see. More people should take note of this.
@sunshineeee2 жыл бұрын
And the good thing too is, he isn’t a jerk in the usual “he hates everyone but me 😍” bs. Majorly his reputation is based around high schoolers being high schoolers-making up rumors. Even if he’s a bit annoying in a jerky way at times(apologies if it’s more, haven’t seen it in a bit), Kat finding out he’s nice and warming up to him is mostly because he’s BEEN pretty cool and nice; no one just gave him that opportunity to step outside of their notion of him based on the rumors. It’s a nice take on the “bad boy” trope

Fun Fact: Kat wasn't supposed to cry while reading the poem at the end, but Julia Stiles got so emotional, and the director thought it very befitting of the scene, that they simply left it intact.

Heath Ledger and Julia Styles' chemistry is unmatched. Usually I don't root for main characters of rom-coms. 1,5 hours is simply not enough for me to get invested. Or I thought so, who knows :) But these too seem so compatible in every way.

This is one of my favorite Teen movies ever. It wasn't so much that Kat wasn't like other girls, she just refused to conform. I had that moment in high school as well. It just valued the smart girl, and showing why she is the way she is, but unlike most teen movies, there was no makeover of her, just wanted to wear a nice dress at prom, nothing more. Patrick giving the pep talk to Cameron was so sweet. Also, Bianca punching Joey was so unexpected. It was one of my favorite parts, because in a weird way, it gave her some character growth. I hope they don't remake this movie, cause I don't think that they will do it right or capture the magic they had in that movie.

I related a lot with Kat's decision to not conform to the expectations of her peers and present herself in a certain way so that she's more "likeable" or "palleteable", the way her sister Bianca does. It made even more sense when it's revealed that she used to be " Popular", which means at some point she WAS putting up an image of the kind of person everyone wanted her to be. Having done so for a good portion of my life, I didn't even realise how much the need to be seen as perfect and desirable at all times just takes over your life, until one day you can't do it anymore (for me it happened after I got a surgery and couldn't go around wearing whatever I wanted anymore and most of the times, I was too tired from meds or too in pain to care what I looked like). And for Kat, that might've been after hooking up with Joey (which, I feel like no one talks about enough, how traumatising it is to have your first time be uncomfortable and honestly, non-consensual because Kat said she wasn't ready for it). That would be enough to put anyone off the idea of popularity and putting up a likeable image. Kat isn't trying to portray an image of being "not like other girls", she's trying not to portray ANYTHING AT ALL. Aka trying to live a life where she's self-aware about her actions and making sure those actions don't come from a place of trying to please other people. It's very telling of society, and a clever choice by the film-makers, that even though Kat is actively trying not to put up a front, everyone around her and EVEN the audience thinks she's putting up this "act" of "not being like other girls". Kat doesn't EVER say or do anything mind you, to imply that she doesn't think she's like other girls: she still has crushes, she dresses up when there is occasion to do so and is not afraid of being emotional. And that's why even after so many years of the movie's release, her character still feels relateable and fresh to people.

Heath Ledger was my obsession as a teen. I loved him in Two Hands with Rose Byrne and I always cry at the end of Brokeback Mountain. I couldn't finish watching his movie candy it hurt too much. It took me years to see this movie again. No remakes please of this movie it isn't necessary. My fav parts are when Kat gets her acceptance letter, brings back good memories when I got my acceptance letters. When Kat confessed to her sister that she slept with Joe and why she is now the way she is. The part where Cameron finally tells off Bianca and she kisses him. And of course the singing in the bleachers. I sang that song to both my babies when they newborns.

I love this movie. It's one of my favorite movies, even though I've only seen it twice. It's such a good movie. I didn't really consider Kat to be like the 'not like other girls' stereotype. I can't remember for sure, but I think she doesn't belittle other girls for being feminine. And that's a big part of the 'not like other girls' stereotype. But besides that I agree with everything you said. I love the poem in the movie. And my favourite line is (not sure if this is the exact line but it's how I remember it) "And most of all I hate that I don't even hate you at all, not one bit." I think there was something in there about 'I hate that I love you' but I don't remember how it was said. I'm not sure how I would feel about a re-make. It could be good but it could also be really bad. Maybe it's better to just leave it like this. And I agree with how it relates to society today. But also I'm Autistic and I have never been interested in trends or wanting to be like others style-wise. I did want to not be different (not be Autistic) for a while. But that has nothing to do with style or this video. I love your videos and whenever I watch your video essays I love hearing the intro voice over thing. I haven't watched your podcasts yet. Honestly because I forgot about it. But now that I remember, thank you for the reminder, I'm really excited to listen to it. And I'll make sure not to forget again. Thank you for this video. Love this! And I view the not like other girls trope to be multifaceted. Not always as a negative. When I look at earlier films that trope had a different makeup overall. But I do agree with why you don’t view it as the trope.(if that makes sense lol) And standing out in the crowd is what makes us who we are. I don’t know why people are brainwashed to believe we should all have the same way of being. Let me know what you think of the podcast once you check them out 💕

One of my good friends got me to watch this movie and I love it! I knew of the name heath ledger and had watched Batman. But when I watched this movie I heard he was in it and was confused as to who he played in it, so much so that I googled the cast 😂 It was probably the fact that he had makeup on in Batman, but when I looked at heath I just couldn’t imagine him playing an evil character. His smile was just so infectious and the chemistry was 110%. It made me real sad that I didn’t appreciate him when he was still alive. I just appreciate the acting of the two main characters because I feel as if it showed genuine and realistic relationship building, which was beautiful to see :)

I saw 10 things i hate about you when it came out in theaters, and I still love it. I like that Kat ultimately isn't tamed, she just finds that she can connect with other people without conforming. It makes her character arc so satisfying and optimistic. It's also a satisfying fuck you to the original Taming of the Shrew, which relies Katherina finding happiness in submission to her husband in order to resolve the conflict. Although the film is about white upper class girls, it also has self-aware moments that highlight their privileged position and problematize the liberal feminist thrust of the film. I agree that the English teacher is key, and I think his voice alerting the audience to the fact that Kat's problems are not the only, or the most important, is part of why the film still holds up. Finally, Kat is gay coded. It was the 90s so she couldn't be gay, but from her disinterest in boys to her riot grrrl sensibilities and the femme punk influenced soundtrack, Kat read queer af. I love Kat for her queerness and I love all of us queer teen girls in the 90s who could see through a heterosexual love story to find queer characters to identify with.

From what I've heard (aka OSP summaries) the original taming of the shrew is quiet... misogynistic. It's basically a man trying to 'tame' the 'shrew' by ACTUAL TORTURE METHODS. Lack of sleep food and generally being treated like dirt! The 'shrew' trapped in this marriage ends up being beat down to an obedient wife who will agree with her husband on anything and everything- (SO SHE DOESNT GET TORTURED)
