XP-Pen being the first non-wacom tablet line to have more than 60hz refresh rate instantly bumps it up in the drawing tablet rankings for me.

@faelwolf1177 24 күн бұрын
I've been indifferent to more than 60hz on a drawing display. I can't see the advantage of a higher refresh rate for drawing. Though if it's going to be your only monitor, it could make sense. But I don't game on a small monitor, and the game I play has to be locked at a lower refresh rate to run well at 4K anyway (flight sim), so I use a very large HDR 4K smart TV, which covers all my gaming and entertainment needs. Much cheaper than a large 4K monitor as well. So what is the advantage for art specifically to have a faster refresh rate?

@faelwolf1177 I've used a galaxy tab for drawing at 120hz, and it provides a surprisingly good drawing experience if you draw with little to no stabilization, but I'm only considering it an actual lifesaver on heavier workloads like drawing pages of comics where there's considerable memory-use and the program slows down. I'm currently using a convertible laptop for drawing locked at 60hz, and there is virtually no difference if you get used to it, although I now bump up my stabilization to get cleaner strokes. Although I personally prefer the drawing experience on the 120hz tablet, if that counts for anything. Overall, I'd say it matters if you're a stickler for drawing experience and pen smoothness like me. I do value getting close to drawing on paper on a screen. It's not an imperative feature, but it certainly offers creature comforts.

It's been nice to see XP-Pen and Huion stepping up their game the past year or so. Wacom is even having to start lowering their prices a bit now on their tablets in this size range. Real competition at work. With the large side bezels, I'd have liked to have seen express keys instead of the separate controller, or some way to mount the controller to either side at least. But at half the price of the Xencelabs, and one third the price of a Wacom, hard to complain about anything! There's a technical reason for the large bezels. The EMR digitizers get jittery and inaccurate at the edges, so the bezels let the manufacturer put the edges of the digitizer panel past the drawing area to eliminate that issue for the user. The issue is due to the way the grid mapping relies on the surrounding grid to establish the coordinates, and power enough signal strength for the RFID chip in the pen. So when there are few or no grid points around the pen tip, things get unreliable. Some manufacturers take it a step further for a hand rest, but there is a rather large minimum bezel (by current standards) for this kind of digitizer. You'll also find it on the non-monitor pads that use the same tech, though those tend to use the minimum bezel size.

I'm a long (long, long) time owner of a Cintiq 24hd and I have to say that express keys sounds nice, but in practice are useless on a tablet this big. Imagine sitting at a table drawing, then having to reach for the very edge of the table every time you want to change tools. It's a really big movement that gets uncomfortable quickly. I have a Tourbox connected to mine now, having long since abandoned using the express keys. A remote that can sit under your natural hand position is much more practical.
@MightGuy15
@MightGuy15 23 күн бұрын
@fix0the0spade I was just about to say this I had the original artist 24 Pro and I almost never used the wheel or Express keys because it took so much more effort to reach when using a tablet this big. XP pen seem to have been doing their homework Express Keys work well on small tablets where you can easily and on the edge but for Monster tablets like this one it's a bit of a liability
@faelwolf1177
@faelwolf1177 23 күн бұрын
@@fix0the0spade I use a 20" monitor, and a manipulator arm, so my natural drawing position allows me to rest my hand on the left edge of the monitor, and have my express keys set up for the most commonly used functions. Between that and the quick access pop-up in Krita, it takes very little movement to change brushes, etc. I get a lot of use out of my express keys. But not knocking those with a different workflow! I may find a similar issue though, if I move to one of these larger tablets, so I'll keep that in mind!

@@MightGuy15 I chose the 4K one because I tend to get very close to my screen (RIP my posture) and I doubt I'd be able to notice any bump in frame rate. (It's 165hz, not 140hz btw) All my previous monitors have been 60hz. I think the boosted Hz might be a bit of a gimmick, but maybe it's genuinely useful to some people. I do game, but I don't play usually games where the frame rate is important. I have an iPad pro which supposedly has 120hz and I've never noticed the difference (I just looked it up now to see if there was a difference. I wasn't aware beforehand haha)

I'm someone who holds the 16 inch xppen on my lap and I appreciate the large bezels. I'm hoping next gen has the 165hz refresh rate on their smaller units! Also. That shortcut remote (and the one that comes with all older models) has a dongle-free bluetooth connection function if you hold the center circle button for 6 seconds. XP-Pen's support chat has a firmware upgrade they can send you when asked that'll make the shortcut remote useable on android and iPad. The Android app to program the buttons is on the xppen remote drivers website and not the google play store at this time. Also, Samsung programmed physical space bars for their galaxy tabs for something and can't be used to pan canvases in any art app, so you'll have to program the hand tool in CSP to another keyboard shortcut and assign that on the remote. Just throwing that in there!

@@cammiluna This is excellent info! I had no idea there was some firmware update available to make it work on Android, and after getting one to use with my S8 Ultra while connected to my PC, this means I could get it to work on Android too... Much appreciated!

@@Just_a_commenter XP-Pen doesn't actively promote this! The only reason why I found out at all was because their website started listing the remote as a recommended accessory for the Magic Drawing Pad, so I ended up doing a 4am deep dive on the internet on how to make my remote work on Android and ended up on a Reddit post that mentioned the firmware update. I booted up support chat and they threw me a link in less that five minutes! Now i use the remote for my Galaxy Tab S6 Lite and I can't function without it anymore!

@@Just_a_commenter No problem! This isn't even promoted by XP-pen itself. once I saw the remote being a recommended accessory for the magic drawing pad, i had to do some deep diving on the internet and found a reddit post that explained the firmware update. if you connect the remote to the android xppen remote app and you see the names of the button shortcuts, the firmware is already up to date. if all the shortcut labels are blank, then go to the xppen chat and they'll cough you up a link and instructions in 3 minutes.

Now *this* is a review I was looking forward to seeing from you. I greatly value your input and these devices look fantastic on paper, so I'm curious what your experience was like! Will update comment after watching the video entirely. Edit: At this point I am very interested in getting the 165hz version. My eyes are fairly sensitive to differences in screen frequency, so while the hz bump may not be as noticeable to others, I think I do have a higher likelihood of noticing and valuing the higher refresh rate. It helps that the 165hz version is also cheaper, but the resolution is perfectly fine, too. For the longest time I've used 1440p screens at various sizes, and at 23.8" this device still has a pixel density of 123PPI, putting it around the middle of the 110-140PPI range for comfortable viewing. Would I notice the clarity bump by going to 4K for 185PPI on a 23.8" display? Probably. Would I prefer a higher refresh rate over that extra clarity? Almost certainly. Gonna put some serious consideration into buying this display.

Quite unexpected... I thought Brad will cheer for 4k. But he says QHD and 4k not much difference, and 160hz makes it more multi purpose? There are not much reviews yet, but I've heard some guys admire "how smooth stroke feels on 160hz". Tbh I don't know about that... I work all my life on 60hz Dell monitors + Wacom Intuos pro and I never felt any lags I could perceive while drawing. Also I'm surprised Brad didn't say a word about new super color management improvements. Xppen really pumps it loud, and previous gen was quite far behind in colors from Cintiq pro.

Do you happen to have a friend who does sculpting in Zbrush or similar? I'm on the fence, wondering which XP-PEn to buy. All gen 2, but 19", 24 4K or 24 165Hz. I'm especially curious about the 165Hz, and how it feels to sculpt in Zbrush, but it seems XP-Pen favors review units to 2D artists, which is a pity.. I gather what you're saying is there is still the certain "input lag", in lack of a better term, between the pen and the display showing the new strokes. So the benefit of 165Hz does not really help at all? Would love to see someone using it in sculpting telling me their experience, whether the 165Hz is worth it, or if a 60Hz (still, sadly..) is t he way to go.

I got my first tablet from XP Pen, I think it was the 15.6 (not the pro). I loved it and still use it to this date, however, I am ready for a bigger screen that will last me for years. I will give this one to my daughter because she loves to draw. If not I will make a little girl happy, I have a co-worker that she tells me her daughter is a talent artist. Now for this one, I will get this by the end of this year and might take Brad classes in case if I am missing something.

At this point..i think we're at diminishing returns ..i have the last gen xp pen artist 24 pro.... Whats the reason to upgrade??.. All these tablets are at a good standard now.. 4kvs 2k doesnt make much of a difference when its only a 24 inch display.. 60fps vs 120 fps doesn't make much difference when your pc is powerful enough..and in gaming you still need v-sync or g-sync.. Pen pressure is solid all around.. Wobble is good all round now. Drawing tablets are at the apex now.. What they need to do now..is make them all in one PCs..with decent batteries so i can move around with them.. That maybe the next step..put a powerfull lil 6840u AMD PC on the back

@@htsunmikuYeah, I'm upgrading from a 2008 cintiq and a small iPad pro to this. I'm getting this most recent model, because I want to be using it at least 5 years into the future, ideally more. My idea is that it will be supported for longer than the old gen, so I can use it well into the future with no problems. It has some subtle but good differences (etched glass vs AG film, slightly better pen, better colours) but those certainly don't justify an upgrade if nothing about the OG version is broken. I don't think these are like iPhones where you're expected to upgrade every couple of years (not that I ever have lol)

If I may ask, is there much of a difference in color banding between 4k and 165hz model? The 4k has FRC on 8bit panel while 165hz does not. I'm surprised nobody actually went into more detail comparing the actual differences between the two models and chose to only review one of the two. Like comparing line speed, fluidity, smoothness, color accuracy, color banding, and well... sharpness. Is the fake 10bit and extra color accuracy actually worth the extra $200+ on the 4k panel?

From what i see after watching this vid, not worth it. Brad seems like to prefer the 165Hz more than the 4k version because he stated that the resolution not that different. So, i'll pass that one. And as with the 165hz, it has a downside, it's get warmer as the screen have to do double the works compare to the 60hz one (as Brad reviewed in the video). I'm afraid the 165hz version might be failed a little sooner than expected. The only upgrade you really get is the new pen tech. I watch reviews, and people still buying the 24 inch you have although it came out years ago. If you really want to step up, better go for bigger screen than the one you own and screen size does matter than the pen tech. Right now, Huion and Wacom have them but costly.

WHAT. I have no idea why this video came up in my recommendations, as I've never looked for drawing tablets, and don't want one. What I do want, and what I've been looking for for years, is a 24" just plain monitor with good image quality and better dpi/refresh than the 1080/60hz that seems to be all there is. I certainly wouldn't get a pair of these for my PC, and yes, that bezel makes sure of that, but seeing this panel is somewhat confounding.

Hey brad, could you confirm if these support HDR? That's my main gripe with drawing tablets. I use a macbook air and a monitor with HDR and i really cant draw comfortably on drawing tablets with mere 250 nits and below brightness. HDR usually "boosts" that to 400 and up so im curious. P.S. I actually switched back to a drawing tab because of this and im looking for the next tablet to support HDR.

why can't xp pen make a 1440p for the 22 inches???? , 4k is useless at 24 inches , the gains over 1440p at 24 inches are small ( 122 ppi vs 186ppi ) ,seems big , but the bigger the ppi value is , the noticeable the increases are, especially if you have the display at 50 cm from the eyes , for instance , 1440p would be too low for 27 inches tablets ( 108 ppi ) if the 22 inches tablets were at 1440p instead of 1080p , we would get 134 ppi instead 100ppi , 34 ppi differences at this scale ,the difference is bigger than the 44ppi between 4k an 1440o at 24 inches

So you want high refresh rate for animation or video-related work. But you want specifically 120Hz or variable refresh rate. 120 goes into all the common animation frame rates you might use 12, 24, 15, 30, and 60. It has very little to do with lag or latency or for gaming. There is a reason Wacom picked that refresh rate. The 165Hz on this seems to be a bigger number better as you might expect from someone who doesn't understand why the feature is there. For gaming, I just know that getting the ghosting, latency and other things down is not always well done and so I am just not sold that this would make a good gaming monitor so it needs to stand on its own for art and the choice of 165Hz without mentioning VRR has me questioning whether it would actually be good for what you would want a higher refresh rate monitor in art which is animation.

I do not know why XP Pen, in its promotion emphasizes that its tablets have no lag, because of the increase of Hz...I don't know why they pretend to deceive people with something that is a lie, since the lag depends on your computer and the program you use. It seems that they have learned from apple, adding unnecessary things just to put them big in the ads, even though it doesn't really serve any purpose at a functional level. I don't mean that it's not a good thing to have more hertz, of course it is, but not for the reasons they try to sell.

Its not really deception..some lag can be caused by the tablet itself..but in this case there's no lag because of the tablet.

@@86lanzo that is not actually correct. The latency created by the pen itself will be the same no matter what, this is basically just a monitor so all the lag depends on your PC. The faster refresh rate only makes the cursor or menus opening smoother but it has no difference in performance, it just looks better.
@mapachelimon
@mapachelimon 15 күн бұрын
@@86lanzo it's not true. The tablet is a display, the cursor follow the pen, and the latency is caused by the performance of the computer and app you are using. It’s like a game. A videogame can run to 120hz in a 120hz screen, but the lag is generated by the performance of the computer or the internet connection in online mode, not the hz. It has no sense to promote that the hz generates no lag. It’s a lie.

High refresh rate 4K for gaming? You need a super expensive graphics card for that, and by that point you'll not be gaming on your drawing tablet anyway. 1440p makes more sense for gaming, specially at this size, because you won't be as close to the screen as you are when you're drawing, so you won't get the benefit of 4K when gaming.

Higher frames and refresh rates beyond a certain threshold are a money dump. Anatomically speaking, the human eye can not perceive a noticeable difference higher than 60 fps except in animation, but even then the most people have been able to notice a difference is 200 fps maybe a little more than that? The highest most average people notice is actually around 120 fps. Now the first thing people bring up is games at 600 fps, but that is not because it looks better to your eye, that is so it can perform better on the machine. You can crash games if your frames are too low or your computer's GPU doesn't support a reasonable minimum of frame rates, jus fyi.

@JMulvy 23 күн бұрын
@@akeemmorrison2589 240 is not a lot more than 200, you are talking about a 20% increase overall, which I said some people can notice. However, sorry to say that when talking about 480 at least half of that is image render speed. Making it look more fluid to your eye. You are not noticing all 480 frames / second, at most your noticing 200 - 240, maybe. but it is processing at double the speed that you are used to. If you were to get real technical the math would suggest you are actually seeing every other frame of the animation because the in between frames are moving too fast for the human eye to see. It is really fascinating stuff. For example if you go too high your eyes will notice what looks like stuttering but it is just your eyes noticing every third frame, fourth frame, fifthe frame, etc. Then if you go ridiculously higher anything that moves in the animation will appear to be moving so fast you can't see it anymore.
