I am teaching a Music science program at our local school. A student came in to learn about Analog magnetic tape, (and square things using paper pages) toting a WONDERFUL Yamaha Bass Clarinet she is also learning at age 12! The B and Bflat pads leak, so we made your feeler gauge and learned to use it ...only after listening to the tape and unanimously, across three generations, deciding the music on the tape wasn't worth saving ...nor listening to (Huge Smile)~! Her Bass Clarinet, and it's repair IS!!!Thank You Respect!

I had the wooden dowel, but opted for the popsicle sticks. I glued two popsicle sticks with wood glue, then used the tape chunck. I held it all together with clothes pins. Thanks for the videos!

This is the most innovative feeler gauge design I have seen as yet, and it's the one I will make and use. Other methods--cigarette paper, in particular--probably work well, but are not "tools" like yours.

I have an easier method of making this tool. Get a BIC pen and remove the ink, roller tip, and tapered piece. Get your cassette tape and snake it into the hole of the tapered piece where the ink/tip would usually go until it's coming out the back end of the tapered piece. You have to slightly bend the tape to get it through. Pull some excess tape through and wrap it over the back edge of the tapered piece so it gets sandwiched between that piece and the pen body. That holds it securely. Done. No lathes, no glue. You can even put the pen back together when you're done.

I never thought of using a cassette tape! The answer has been under my nose this whole time!

Is there no other substitute for tapes? Sadly it will be very hard to obtain one in our area.
