Honestly I never understood why the hell the parents did not chew JJ out for what she did to Marnie, I mean for gods sake that was their daughter and after seeing the torment Marnie had to suffer at the hands of their precious daughter in law they got mad at Marnie for revealing what happened to her in high school? Time may have past, but JJ’s actions afterwards did not show that she’s turned over a new leaf and can they even imagine how much Marnie have endured and suffered?

When JJ pretends not to know Marni & then later does these little hints, poking at her (like playing 'we are the champions'), it proves that she's still got it in her. She's still a bully, messing with Marni's head. That to me, is the reason she didn't deserve a happy ending. Does bother me that no one else in the family saw how tortured Marni was. AND it bother's me that Marni's achievements were just brushed over so quickly. I know this is a comedy but when I see things like this it makes me feel bad for everyone actually going through something like that. I wasn't bullied ever but I do know what it's like to work really hard for things and for family to just go 'that's nice' and go back to focusing on your siblings. It feels awful. So yeah, I'll never side with the happy ending here. The only reason Marni set everything up was to make peace with the family. And really, she had one bad night. JJ spent years torturing her. An apology is all Marni should have done and JJ should have been the one trying to make amends.
@Demaad

Not exactly true. Joanna told her aunt on the same night of this before the reception that she had made a “big mistake” that she didn’t know how to fix. The big mistake she was referring to was how she bullied Marni in high school. Joanna was remorseful, but by that point, things had escalated into all-out war between them. She realized too late that she needed to fix things, because by this point, Marni decided that if she wasn’t getting an apology, she’d do whatever it takes to make sure that her high school bully wasn’t going to be a part of her family.

Also Will was an asshole. He blamed her equally to Joanna for ruining his *perfect* night and was too busy playing victim to show any sympathy at all. I agree that what Marni did was immature, she was basically stooping to Joanna's level, but his sister should be more important than his fiance. Even during highschool he hardly protected Marni at all. The closest he ever came to trying to help her and high school was giving that speech to make him look like a good person, even then she had to practically beg him to give her the attention. He could have used his reputation to stop the bullying or at least defend Marni but I guess he was worried about it being tarnished. The movie made him out to be "the popular kid who's actually a good person and protects his unpopular sibling"but if that were really true then Marni wouldn't have gone through the torment that she did. Seriously, where the hell was he?? And then he attempted to take the treehouse without a single word of it towards his siblings, and got all condescending towards Marni when she approached him about it. He's almost as toxic as Joanna.

Yes, you can grow up and put it aside but the trauma, the scar and the memories would never go away. That's what the bullies never understand. They always expect their victim to grow up, acts as adults and treat it as, "its high school" . Never knowing or acknowledging the hurt they cause just for the sole reason that they dont know. My brother & I weren't close so we didn't talk about anything. My sister & I were but we really didn't talk about 80% of what was going on. Its mostly about fun stuff or our friends, and occasionally, boys. What I don't get though, is that Joanna was a cheerleader. How did Will not know her? All the pep rallies, games, practices.. Sorry for the like mini-essay: What I think annoys me the most about him (and the rest of Marnie's family) forgiving her is, Joanna knew from her first date with Will exactly who Will's sister was and what she had done to her in high school. There is no way she didn't know. There were pictures around the house and Joanna later says that the family talked about Marnie all the time, so she had to have known. So, she had time to think of a way to apologize and to make up for past behavior. Like her whole narrative of her just panicking (she literally says "I panicked". Like how? You knew he was her brother. She didn't know you were his fiancé. If this was sprung on anyone it was Marnie, not you.) and not wanting them to know is BS. She could have contacted Marnie and apologized at any point after high school, in that time where she was trying to be a better person and all (a good way to start would have been to apologize to the person who she spent four years tormenting). She also could have called her up and asked to meet before she and Will were engaged or before Marnie came home. She had time to think of a better plan than "pretend it didn't happen when I first meet her again but then make sure to constantly bring it up with subtle hints so she knows that I didn't forget and that I am more than happy to be horrible to her again if she says anything". Even just actually pretending nothing happened and being genuinely nice to her would have been better. Her whole "you couldn't just let it go" was also BS, she literally brought it up multiple times.. She even got her a necklace that said "MOO" knowing it would upset her. And in the end, she didn't apologize to Marnie until after guilt tripping her by talking about how her parents died and she was afraid of losing Will and his family and after Marnie made a joke trying to comfort her about how bad she had been herself to make Joanna feel better. So, even after everything Joanna had done to her in high school and then again in the last few days, she still didn't seek out Marnie to apologize. Marnie basically had to seek her out and comfort her first.

Everything about this movie rubbed me the wrong way to be honest. I feel so bad for Marni. 'Cause I've been an outcast, myself, back in high school, and kinda still am to this day. Seeing someone who has been terrible towards another person during this said person's most vulnerable years... ... Get their happy ending? Without even making the first move to apologize and be sincere about it? It's just... Jarring. It's only natural for us to root for this bully to fail, especially when they continue to torment the other just to hide the truth about their horrid past. In other words... Disgusting movie. I wish I never watched it. If bullies wanted to "start over", they should take responsibility for their vile deeds, apologize to the ones they wronged, and try to make amends. That's not what JJ did. She remained the same bully she was, and the worst part is that everyone treated her as a "poor innocent victim", and blamed Marni, who was forced to apologize to everyone and make amends. Her dumbass brother, who NEVER "protected her" (why did Marni say that in 8:18?!) blamed her, not only JJ. Just awful. Even the ending of "Odd girl out" was better.

This movie did everything wrong. For one thing: Ramona and Gayle had a really promising subplot (friends turned enemies,) and we get maybe 10 minutes of it. Meanwhile, the whole movie is Joanna being a vile bitch to Marni for seemingly no reason. It's not like it bothers to explore _why_ she did, or _why_ any of these women turned into shrill, infantile harpies the second they saw each other. It could've been a really promising horror-comedy. But instead, it just reinforces such rancid stereotypes about women. Which is ironic for a movie featuring Veronica Mars, Reign from _Supergirl_ , Rose Nylund, Laurie Strode, and Ellen Ripley.

Okay. So I know that this is just a movie. Its message is just... Well, it's not THAT bad... ... You know what? Actually, the message isn't bad at all. Being forgiving towards those who've wronged us in the past is actually a good thing to do. Just letting go of all that baggage of torment is freeing. But... ... This movie was still terribly executed. JJ doesn't understand what her horrible antics had done to Marni. She was never sorry, chose to hide it, and even threatened her if she told the truth by reminding her of the old days. I see no empathy in her earlier "apology" at all (And the fact that THAT was all Marni ever wanted from her, and she wouldn't even try to give her a sincere one. is just... Ugh.). Overall, she was still horrible towards her, but was being super subtle this time around, to mask her despicable behavior. And yeah, she showed how much of a sociopath she truly is with all the people she's trying to manipulate ("Look at me, I can never do anything wrong, I should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for being this kindhearted, you know.") and the truth she's trying to obscure ("I absolutely did nothing wrong. We're past that. That all happened in high school. We're grown-ups now. But I'm not going to own up to what I've done anyways. No one needs to know who I was and what I did to others. And I will SILENCE anyone who tries to speak ill about me. UwU"). You can't let bygones be bygones without apologizing and truly being sorry for what you've done through your actions. Even though "that WAS back in high school." JJ got her just desserts here. She didn't even make an effort to show Marni she's a changed person now. Although... She did make an effort to terrorize Marni to keep her mouth shut. 🤔 I honestly feel bad for Marni. Being the big person is a good thing. But forgiving a toxic person such as JJ who clearly doesn't deserve Marni's forgiveness since she hasn't shown any signs of sincere remorse... Is just... Jarring... To watch. And the fact that everyone went against Marni after what she had done to get payback for everything she's been through all those years ago and because JJ was a stuck-up female dog who didn't want to apologize because "that was all in the past" (but she doesn't have the right to say that 'cause she was literally the one who tormented Marni during high school)... Just rubs me the wrong way. 😩 Yes, I was bullied when I was younger, and had low self-esteem. I'm still socially-awkward and a bit asocial because of my irrational fear of people like JJ. Sure, I'm introverted, but it's people like her that I chose to remain indoors as much as possible. I get so anxious whenever I do stuff outside. It feels like everyone's talking smack about me, even if I don't know them personally. I know it's probably all in my head, but these thoughts still hurt, and the trauma is there. I do have compassion for others, and would always choose to forgive whenever I can. But for those who show no remorse for what they had done and continue to do, I see no redemption for them at all.

I agree 100%. And I think I could have maybe sided even a little bit (like just a tiny little bit) with JJ, if Marni had at least been the one to restart it. Like if JJ had just tried to genuinely be nice, but Marni tried to sabotage her early on. But it was JJ (almost immediately) that brought the past up again first in the car with the song on the radio, and the lip smack in the mirror. Like, she just demonstrated that she never really changed and that her first instinct when confronted was to go back to being that the same mean girl she was in high school. I think it was an issue with the writing team. They wanted everyone to get redemption, but wanted to make JJ's actions bad enough that Marni's actions were excusable. Instead, they just made JJ like a sadist, who didn't deserve the redemption she got because she never genuinely apologized and seemed to just be a terrible person deep down who was good at acting like a decent person. Even her "apology" to Marni came after guilt tripping her about her parents deaths AND after Marni made a self-deprecating joke about herself. And it wasn't even really an apology. (If I remember correctly, its been awhile and I don't feel like re-watching this scene), it was basically " was trying to prove I was a better person. But I should have apologized earlier", but that isn't really an apology at all." So, it was like a lie mixed with "I should have said sorry....' which isn't even an apology.

@@kaya119 True. Now it looked as though she was just guilty she got exposed. That's why she said that. JJ honestly seemed like a sociopath throughout the movie. I feel so bad for Marni. She did not deserve that toxic person back into her life again. And yeah, it's obviously the writers' fault that JJ's characterization came off that way.
@kaya119
@kaya119 3 жыл бұрын
@@HirayaMayari She really did come across as a psychopath who just did not care about others feelings. And even her like guilt speech to Marni was basically about how she wanted her parents to be proud of her, so she still wasn't like "I wanted to be better" it was "I wanted my family to think I was better". And like I could maybe accept an ending where Marni forgave her and they both moved on. But JJ still ending up as her sister-in-law with Marni's entire family basically just ignoring everything JJ did in the past? AND Marni going so out of her way to do the wedding at the hospital? Nope. Just no. If JJ was going to get any redemption, it would have needed to have been like if they did a "Six Months Later" thing and she and Marni's brother met again at a coffee shop and decided to COMPLETELY start over. And then she is honest from the start and has to actually prove she is a good person, not just good at FAKING being a good person.
@HirayaMayari
@HirayaMayari 3 жыл бұрын
@@kaya119 So TRUE. JJ's redemption arc was nonexistent in the movie. And Marni going out of her way to help her is too much. The story was framing that whole thing with the party to be Marni's fault, so now she has to help JJ get back with her brother. 🤮 FYI, Marni's family (if you even love Marni at all), this girl nearly ruined Marni's life with the trauma she inflicted on her during one of the most important developmental stages of a person's life, and she wasn't even sorry for it. "Forgive, but never forget." Sure, Marni forgave JJ (even though she wasn't truly sorry). But she should never forget how much of a manipulative, toxic person JJ really is. This person never changed. Her pity party lured Marni into a trap to make things go her way at the end. There was no redemption arc. Her character never even had an arc. Was there something in the story telling us that she DID change? No! She only felt guilty for not giving a more convincing apology earlier to Marni. Because, NOW, she has to deal with the consequences of her actions. She was never sorry. And THEN, she still got what she wanted at the end of the story without even working hard for it. Marni had to do all the heavy lifting to help JJ get her happy ever after. I honestly believe it won't be long till JJ flaunts her true colors towards Marni again.

Yeah thing about movie writers is that they don’t always think about the movies message or how it would be if the movie was realistic. I think that they were going on you should forgive and forget but as you said it was terribly executed. I wouldn’t of forgiven Joanna and I’m a guy. Also if I were Will not only would I not marry her I would make sure she never comes near me or my family again. I felt the exact same way about two other movies (are we done yet) and (what about Bob) In Are we done yet ice cubes character I actually feel was in the right to be pissed off at Chuck because he was basically a scam artists. He convinced him to buy that house knowing full well how bad a condition it was in and just keep making him pay more and more. In the movie (what about Bob) Bob was basically stocking his therapist on his family trip and driving him more insane as the movie went on. I’d of been just as mad if someone was stocking me like that and I hated how no one understood why doctor Marvin was pissed off at him throughout the whole movie.

The ending we deserved for this movie was throwing JJ’s ass under the bus for her behavior. I’m glad to find this edit, I hated how she was forgiven. Especially when she was the one attempting to use violence towards Marnie first, imagine if she used that on Will in an argument. 💀💀

You all wanna know why Will or whatever his name was got mad at Marni for what she did? It's because throughout his life- especially as a teenager in High School-, he mostly got everything he ever wanted. I can tell from watching his facial expressions, as there was a little bit of spoiled entitlement in each one. Hell, for all we know, he was probably the favourite child in the family. The "Golden Boy", who everyone loved. And when he became a star athlete in High School, that entitlement skyrocketed. He may not have been a bully, like JJ, but he still had that "I deserve to get what I want" mentality. Him finally seeing how JJ had been treating Marni, all these years made him angry, yes. But him being angry at Marni, was not JUST because she did what she did to finally expose JJ. It was mostly because deep down he KNEW that he couldn't go through with marrying someone who would do that to his sister and had to dump JJ. And that angered him, because even though he did the right thing, for the first time in his life, he wasn't going to get he wanted and he couldn't handle that. Yes, he married JJ in the end, but i'm talking about this current scene. TL;RD version: He was a poor man's Troy Bolton, who was acting like a spoiled child, because he had to give up getting what he wanted, for the first time.
