My Grandfather bought a 1996 Land Rover Discovery brand new off the lot and he said it was in and out of the shop constantly. He put 250,000 miles on it and after 10 years of issues, he donated it to the boy-scouts (he's an eagle scout himself). He then purchased a 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser with the 4.7 V8, brand new. To this day, he still has that Land Cruiser and it just hit 400,000 miles. He keeps it meticulously maintained and says it has never once let him down. He could have easily purchased a newer model over the years, but he'll be the first to tell you that he LOVES his 100 series. A true testament to Toyota reliability.

In 1996 I bought the latest Land Rover Owner magazine. There was nothing but bad news from unhappy owners, which didn't surprise me, even 25 years after driving a 'boxy' as an off-road work vehicle. Nothing had changed. I bought an early 95 Series LandCruiser diesel, and kept it for 20 more years, by which time I owned an identical model on an island in tropics. After another 12 years of 95 Series ownership I have never had a breakdown, only done regular servicing. Cost of ownership could not have been less, nor customer satisfaction greater. A front locker would have saved me having to fit my own though. 😊

No hybrid for me!! Ill tell you why. Your review is fantastic and very helpful for anyone who off roads. I was considering the new 4runner (same platform and powertrain) as an off road vehicle slash daily driver, and the fuel economy of the hybrid is attractive, but you CANNOT get the battery wet. So no hybrid for me!! Anybody who has ever done a water crossing during hard-core wheeling will tell you that you WILL get water inside the cabin at some point. It's absolutely crazy of Toyota to call this SUV a hard-core wheeling machine with that issue. Not to mention the tiny load capacity on top of the battery in the cargo area. I would get the non-hybrid all the way.

I'm thinking of importing one from Japan and sadly they only have the 2.7L in the base trim and then diesel only. Alternative would be the Caucasus region where they get the 2.4 without the hybrid which gives you more cargo space and definitely the simplest powertrain apart from the 2.7 liter, but that only has the old 6-speed and is rather underpowered. The third choice would be Canada for a hybrid, which definitely has the most omph and is also tied with the diesel as the most fuel efficient.

Still remember the old days when my grandpa would take us to the mountains in his ‘85 Land Cruiser wagon and us kids in the back were like tumbleweeds moving from side to side on every curve without seatbelts or even seats! 😳 Sad to see it go when he stopped driving rather than passing it on to one of his sons or the grandkids. I hope to get even more value out of my 2024 LC. Excellent, fair review that I thus far agree with. A wonderful and thoughtful review on what appears to be a nice vehicle. Looked like a worthy replacement for my 2017 Forester until I looked up the price of the "base" 1958... 55,000 dollars. Well, I had my daily laugh! Toyota could have offered a more affordable base by having a part-time 4 wheel drive, crank windows, no heated seats or steering wheel, no rear wiper, a front-wheel drive only version using the ECVT from the Rav 4. I realize these deletions would detract from the over all appeal and all-purpose character... but 55,000 dollars, plus dealer markups, plus taxes... this will end up costing 70 thousand plus when all is said and done. Which makes this vehicle another failed effort of the auto industry that is not affordable for the masses.
