I'm a (former) data scientist, whose contract just ended. Thanks to 2020 being *insane*, I'm finding that I need to lower expectations if I want a job again. Naturally, I looked to data analyst jobs. And this is a bit tricky - as all of my experience with recommender systems, NLP, network analysis, etc. is ~useless for analysis roles. It seems dashboards, product backlog, and storytelling are far more applicable. I bet you don't see too many, "how do I transition from data science to data analysis?" questions

More fool you thinking data analysis is a step down. If you’re business oriented and can analyse data, you become extremely powerful and valuable for being able to drill insights into business critical metrics. Yes analyst is very dashboard and visualisation focused. Learn python and it’s visualisation packages and you’ll be a powerhouse earner in no time

Hi, Jen! I love your channel and all the guidance you provide. I am currently in school working towards a BDA degree. Can you talk about the hours data analysts work? Do they work "crazy hours" like, say, lawyers or accountants? I am a single mom, and l need to make sure l am present for my child. Thank you in advance.

Hi Laura! It really depends on the company / role. In most cases, the hours are going to be pretty reasonable with limited overtime. There are likely to be peaks where you'll have to put in more hours on occasion if there's a big push on a project, but nothing like what tax accounts would put in at the beginning of the year. This would typically happen if there's a product manufacturing issue or a certification deadline, etc. The other case would be a large consulting firm (known for being high pay but very high time expectation and travel expectations) or companies known to expect lots of overtime for employees (several large brands have a reputation for this).

Thank you so much, Jen! I have done some research, and l'm glad you can confirm my findings.

If I may ask a question... I'm currently studying machine learning and Ai, along with Python. Would this combination be a good start for Data Science or Analysis?
@TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a great start. If you haven't taken any courses (or self studied) in statistics, make sure you get some time in with that as well.

Do I need IT experience/knowledge to begin in either of these two carrers?

Hello, Jen. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration along with self-learning on the necessary skills. will this work out for the role of data/business analyst?

So can we say that data scientist prepares the data for a data analyst to use ?

Would combining a master's degree in strategic marketing be beneficial to a Business Analyst Consultant? I have the option to do two master degrees in three years, as opposed to one in just two. Thanks!
@TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
I don't see a downside to taking that option if you can afford the extra year of school. It might not help in every position, but would give you an advantage on marketing related roles or with companies in the marketing (including social media) industries.

Hi Jen, Very useful video. Can one get a data science job with a master's in data analytics? Or what degree would be best for that besides a data science degree?
@TheCareerForce4 жыл бұрын
A masters of data analytics is a good foundation for a data science role. Depending on the specifics of the courses you study, you might need additional focus on building skills in a programming language like Python, etc.

I expect the specific methods companies use to market themselves in the future will be different but there will absolutely still be a need for marketing. There can be a lot of analytics in marketing depending on the role. If this is a good job opportunity for you, I'd recommend doing as much with marketing analytics as you can in the role. This should be very useful to the company and it will help build your analytics skills.

Your salary estimates for data analysis is way overblown. $80,000 entry level? A 5-second google indicates $69,000 is the average data analysis salary in the US, with lows of $48,000.
@TheCareerForce5 жыл бұрын
The salary figures I quote are accurate with actual salaries in the US based on in depth research cross referenced with results from many other professional research organizations. You may be finding results that also reflect data reporting analysts roles which sometimes get lumped in with data analyst. They start much lower and drag the average salary down.

@@cameronsmith1288 isn't glassdoor full of salary estimates tho? and i'm certain they don't filter out jobs that are titled "data analyst" yet ask for much lower level skill for much lower level work than what we mean by data analyst.
