Following on from the recent Rolls-Royce Cullinan episode, this week TheCarGuys review and compare the mighty enduring Range Rover.
Is this really the best luxury 4x4 on the market? What’s its appeal & how has it lasted so long? What sort of people buy them and can you be associated with them? And what’s the like to drive and own? But most of all, is this the best choice of luxury 4x4 or will buying one be the worst decision you’ll ever make? All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.
Created by two ordinary guys with an obsession for cars, TheCarGuys.tv is a digital channel that celebrates everything automotive - supercars, classics, quirky, hidden gems and those in the TCG garage.

Great video, thanks! For me, there are two reasons the paddle shifters are needed. 1). If you drive in the mountains, it is the only way to manually downshift and upshift the L405 to manage downhill speed (To avoid brake overheating) and uphill torque. 2). If one off-roads in the L405, the paddle shifters enable the driver (In sport mode) to hold a gear to add additional control of speed and torque.

If you regularly maintain them, ask your garage to carry out any preventive maintainence when servicing them, they are actually very realible cars. We have had a sport as our family car for 5 years now, the longest we've keep any car and we love it!

(opening myself up to all sorts here) Dare I say that the problem these days is that with all these affordable finance plans, people chop and change cars so much that they don't take care of them properly! Such a shame for the next owners
@Pablo-bp3dq
@Pablo-bp3dq 4 жыл бұрын
@@DylansCarReviews I agree with you, the other issue I've noticed is that you can find they are affordable on a finance deal but not necessarily affordable are the running costs and thats when maintenance can be overlooked! We bought our car outright so have the budget to keep it up together. I was very, very tempted by a 355 until I watched thecarguys video and realised buying it wasn't the issue...running it was! That's why I think a well spec'd 997 is the way forward 😎

As of September 1st this year, Land Rover halved their Approved Used warranty period down to 1 year only. LR doesn't even have faith in their own products anymore. (I own a 2016 D4 myself).

A 1 year used warranty brings them into line with most of their competitors. BMW, for instance, have had 1 year warranties on their used cars for years. Would you say that that’s because they have “no faith in their own product” either?

Thanks for the honesty on the unreliability bit. That is so true. My sister-in-law and at least two friends I know own this monster. While the early years were relatively fine, eventually they were beyond pissed with the extreme unreliability. Don't understand why such a heavyweight brand cannot solve this perennial issue.

And this is the thing..................most people come on here to slag off a vehicle perceived as being unreliable.You never get to hear the positive experiences, do you . My sister has an Evoque - it's been plagued with problems, I own a Freelander 2 HSE and it's been nothing but ultra reliable. While she would tell everyone not to touch the brand with a barge pole on social media, she wouldn't do the opposite had she not had those problems (always software related). I don't feel the need to harp on about how how reliable my Land Rover has been (143,000 miles and counting) and that's my point. You only hear the negatives, which, like Chinese whispers , pick up momentum and ends up being damning to the point that the average dickhead down the pub, who's never owned a JLR vehicle, is an instant expert on how totally unreliable they are with absolutely no more experience of the vehicle than the first person who overheard a conversation about "how Dave's had to take his RR back 3 times this year". Toyota have a mystical legendary reliability reputation. It's usually mentioned in the same breath as JLR's now legendary unreliability. People seem to have a very short memory. Remember the recalls that led to 8 million Toyota's being recalled in 2010 ? The 89 people that lost their lives ? No ? Again, short memories. But indicative of the power of perception . Tell people something enough times,and eventually it becomes lore, despite the fact it isn't. Go on ANY car forum. ANY. What you'll see is the same thing over and over again. Enthusiasts who absolutely love the brand and cannot be swayed by negativity for that particular car brand, be it Ford, Vauxhall, Nissan -whatever. Then there are the "owners" to whom brand loyalty isn't really a thing, they just bought a particular vehicle. Then see how many of these people bemoan that brand for host of reasons due to unreliability of certain things that never seem to get addressed by the manufacturer. Don't take my word for it. Do it. You'll also notice there are no threads about reliability, apart from people stating their's "has been fine". Again, type in any vehicle brand and look for their lists of recalls. It's shocking - all across the board............... Yes, JLR really need their arses kicking. But do those searches I mention, and you'll be surprised how many other "reliable" brands do too.

Had Discos and RRs; dealers were awful. Never interested once you bought the car. Argued that obvious faults (usually air suspension) did not exist until I insisted the workshop manager came out with me. Had a stereo fault which they kept blaming on Apple until I found a JLR service bulletin which addressed the issue, but they still tried to avoid fixing the fault under warranty. I suspect a general order to deny faults and avoid warranty costs. Had Audis - brilliant after sales, never argue, call to see how you are getting; shame the Q7 is such a monster.

Good vid. I’ve owned a few Range Rovers. Only one was a problem child partly down to age and prior owner did do all the serviceing but didn’t in other ways. And I had to let that one go. I’m looking at getting another one but newer and lower mileage and following the rule of buying one Full service history and looked after. Personally bar the one bad egg I’ve found them to be Much more reliable than I expected from the rep, I also enjoyed doing some of the mantanace myself witch is the best way to make it more affordable and if competent at mantanace probably better looked after than most garages, and as a owner you won’t get ripped off. But saying that still it’s a premium car and some parts are premium priced and isn’t a budget car. But I think Range Rovers get a very bad rep due to being abused or being run on a shoe string budget. Key is mantanace and expect things like sensors can go Wong but that can happen as much on a Toyota. Also I found with my tdv8 4.4 I was getting around 40+ mpg and mid 30 around town but that could be down to driving style. But I may be biased but RR is in my top picks of realistic cars to own but isn’t for everyone.

Fun video - thanks - enjoyed the humour. I am fortunate to have a seven-month-old 3 L autobiography and, to date, I’ve had no problems with it (touch wood)- nothing but fun and delight. I have two friends who bought new range rovers a couple of years ago and they are both equally delighted, also with no problems. You can only speak as you find. I guess a 10-year-old one would have broken bits but then that applies to any make of car on the market - they all start to wear out after six years. Personally, I’m not convinced that Land Rover products are any worse than anything else. Hope I’m right.

Currently driving an L322 2010 but I have owned all the variants from an ex police 2 door to a classic LSE with air suspension. I am surprised you question the paddles, I often switch to sport and use manual gear select on difficult hills or when off road. Mind you I do real off road driving not just green lane outings. A good tip is to use sport mode on pot holed country lanes as the ride is smoother and you get a bit more throttle control to make the journey more relaxed.

I recently owned a 2017 Range Rover sport autobiography 5.0 v8 a £93,000 car new that come with factory fitted extras by Land Rover (upgrade sound system,head up display & full panoramic sunroof) after a short time a piece of rubber jammed in the panoramic sunroof so as car was under Land Rover warranty I took it to a main dealership (Stockton-on-Tees) and was told the full roof would need replacing. I said go ahead the car is under warranty but guess what they come back & said that part was not covered ? They Fitted It ! I complained to ceo of Land Rover and got no help whatsoever. SO BEWARE warranty not worth the paper it is written on ! ! ! Ps: update I took car to another dealership & rubber was sorted NO new roof needed at all. I'd get a Land Cruiser. To tow my Range Rover to the garage. It's an old joke but as Homer Simpson said: "it's funny cause it's true hahahaha". One thing we should also thing about these new wizzbang IT cars with screens for everything... it's not like Mobile Phones and Laptops are long term devices. Typically users get 5-8 years off them. Most people, at least around my end of the woods, wan't 15+ from a new car, so these things are really lease mobiles. So again, I'd get a Land Cruiser. I'm sure it's lovely to drive around in though, till it lights up like a christmas tree or goes dark like a dark thing on a dark day in a dark part of town. At which point I'd curse my stupidity of not getting a Land Cruiser. By the way, show me a 500 000 mile Range Rover :)

To be fair, luxury vehicles such as this are usually for rich ppl. Rich ppl almost never keep the same vehicle past 5 years. Even RollRoyces and others have their own inherent issues as does every luxury brand. If you want 15 yrs with a vehicle, or 500k miles then you need a Toyota tbh 🤷‍♂️

The centre stack display technology is termed "Dual View" and uses a parallax barrier technology to display a different image to driver and passenger. Too lengthy to explain here in detail but essentially the driver sees all odd columns of pixels and the passenger all even columns of pixels. The drivers image is, therefore, displayed on all odd columns of pixels and the passenger image on all even columns of pixels. The parallax barrier obscures the driver's view of all even columns and the passenger's view of all odd columns such that only the intended image is visible from each side.

I think 900mm is higher than the wheels if you measure it i recently also I went through a metre in recent floods no issues, the choice of terrain is there if you know what your doing if not you leave it in auto set it will do it for you I think you sussed that in the end. No idea how you manage to wipe your sat nav in reverse never happens normally. Door handles are for access from the front not the edge so you don't need to damage your little pinkies. Would say not had many reliability issue over 30 years of ownership they are normally due to peeps thinking they can run them on shoe string budgets. Generally a good review though

I think the thing other people don't understand is they need parts, that doesn't make them unreliable, they have expensive consumables cos they weight ~3 tonnes. It's super rare to have a range rover or even a land rover actually "break down" they are full of redundancies .

Range Rover needs a campaign to mitigate the perceived or true reliability concerns...it's been long overdue. Japanese makers were able to remove their early negative stigmas "tin cans", so I know it can be done.

Guys its clear to see you have not used a Range rover before in the countryside or for country life, for crossing a river = just raise the car up using the suspension ( and also great for attaching a trailer thats too heavy to lift by hand our when you want it to stay level). Black alloys etc is for drug dealers ( new money), 22s are too big, 19s work a lot better and give a better ride, The Paddle shifters etc are for when you want more control off road or are towing something really heavy say a 10 tonnes etc and you want more control over the gearing so you always have the power when you need it (ive used them for that). Hope this clears things up.

Anyone looking to purchase this car BE WARNED! Ive had 2 of this model range rovers and they both needed new engine. My freind had one with the same story. I also have another freind who works in land rover and he pretty much never see this car go over 100k. They all die. There are a few things that range rover know about and will not recall the car. Its redicolous. You will be driving at risk for numerous reasons and land rover will not help you!

Just as with many cars, examples with over 100,000 miles will be in the hands of independent specialists, rather than the manufacturer - especially at the hourly rates charged by ALL prestige manufacturers. Don’t believe me? Then ask this lot: www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post533008.html#533008 Would those that required new engines be SDV6’s?

Thruns Guinneabottle. The horizontal grey lines do make it look longer and lower, although the gills are hideous and need to be colour keyed to try and hide them. The spurs in the lamps might look odd, but they conceal really handy side marker lamps. Unfortunately, from 2018, the side marker lamps are no longer there and they are now useless decoration.

People who buy these new but remarkably a lot on the second hand market have incomplete service as required by time not KS /mile or haven't been serviced at all , Most of the problems are the owners haven't got a clue about maintenance , these are the sorts of people Land Rover know who are the main stream customer base , these customers wouldn't have a clue if it was a diesel or the supercharged petrol model , when they buy they just say, "oh I want a white Range Rover " they wouldn't have clue about engines or the required on going preventive maintenance thats is required and these people most probably let their kids drive they , thrash , towing , overheat transmissions ect and wonder why transmission is slipping , engine overheating , its all driver negligence and error with all of these luxury cars very difficult to find a properly serviced example its almost impossible . If you buy one thats hasn't been service it's a crap shoot and can become worse than owning a boat with massive maintenance bills haunting you while you own it . Avoid at all costs if no service up to date history .

I’d always recommend buying an older RR. In the U.K. there are loads of good independent specialists but they don’t to get their hands on the newer models until they are out of warranty. Buy a five year old, lowish mileage and become friends with your local independent garage. Preventative maintenance is better than using the standard RR service schedule.

GET RID OF IT .................. otherwise, you will have nothing but sleepless nights worrying about how much it's going to cost for its latest MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL PROBLEM .................... AND BELIEVE ME, THERES GOING TO BE PLENTY OF THOSE COMING UP, the RR has not got the reputation for being the MOST UNRELIABLE VEHICLE ON THE PLANET FOR NOTHING ........

Excellent video. However, a small correction - the car won't 'conk out' at 900mm rather the rear end will begin to float. Same as the Discovery 3/4 at 750mm. The air intake is much higher than the max wade depths. Carry on.

I'm gonna say this, I own a range rover and i can honestly say the worst car I have owned... yes, you can shut your eyes and it drives itself, yes its a wonderful drive with luxurious comfort however, the build quality is disgraceful with all the faults that accumulate over such little time. For a car that cost from £70,000 to £140.000 range rover should be a shamed of them selfs. This is my opinion from owning and still do and its sat in my drive for the last 2 months without anyone driving it. Unreliable piece of rubbish. Sorry guys

The only real problem these have are dealerships. Problems are known since 2014, they just muck about too much and the mechanics/engineer turnover is to big for them to carry any type of experience knowledge. On the common problems an afternoon with google search, pair of spanners lift and the correct parts and it would be solved and done, instead of getting into the vortex that is the jlr of incompetence.
