A last-minute episode this week, following the announcement of the new Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) T.33 - the baby brother of the mighty V12 T.50.
The T.33 is also a V12 naturally-aspirated supercar with a similar level of power, torque, weight and dimensions. Its engine is actually improved over the T.50, you can have it in manual or with a paddle-shift gearbox, and it’s just under half the price.
Since Damian is a former owner of a Gordon Murray car, the T.33 was a possible CarGuys.tv candidate, and so this episode covers the details of the new car, likes, dislikes, and the all-important question - will he buy one?
But also, given the similarity of the car to the T.50, which hasn’t even been delivered yet - has GMA shot itself in the foot and annoyed its best customers by launching this car so soon? Let’s find out.
This episode is a pure reaction to the launch and specs of the new car. Is it a never-ending stream of praise in order to secure a test drive? No. It’s an honest appraisal and a discussion about something which would almost certainly be silenced if this was an officially endorsed video. But, it’s worth talking about because several T.50 owners who we have spoken to have expressed the view discussed this week.
Trigger warning - there is also some light-hearted ribbing of press embargoes.
Thank you for watching

Interesting take Damian that cars over £1m are ‘unpalatable socially’. If some T.50 customers are ‘livid’, they could easily sell their slot and buy a T.33, or just sell their T.50 once built. Perhaps the real reason some are annoyed, is that their T.50 now won’t turn into a McLaren F1 style £20m asset, with another 300+ GMA V12 around. The 100 units of this car are also part of a 300 car run, so the V12 will carry on in another 200 cars along with a hybrid unit. Sadly I think all GMA cars will be in this price range, as they said they won’t make more than 100 cars a year. Would have been great to see Gordon make a £150k-300k manual mid-engined V6 or V8 sports car.

If you can buy a T.50, you buy a T.50. If you have £3 million or so to spend on a car, and want to make more money from buying and selling a car, you can sod off. If you're having a hissy fit because you're lucky enough to own what will surely be the best car in the world, but now there's going to be one that is a bit like it but not as good (lower RPM, heavier), my heart truly bleeds for you.

Interesting to hear a potential owners view. Gordon did say that this was going to be the closest relative to T.50, implying that the 3rd model might be a little cheaper, but then he said theyd all have that V12, so sadly I dont think £850k is ever likely. Also I think that Gordon is too uncompromising on tooling and design to be able to produce something cheaper... it would be nice to see him take up the challenge though!

I would think that one of the T33 variants will be a targa. Roof scoop is connected to the engine so that could stay. Mechanisms in the luggage pods. That'd be the one I'd have. Only £1.3m left to save up.

Really, really fair points. Honestly they told the early T50 buyers that a less special v12 car was coming that would use "a detuned engine" it turns out the spec of the motor might be slightly improved since they didn't have to hit the hilarious rev range. You were saying customer T50's haven't turned wheels yet...customer T50's haven't even been built yet lol
@slipfirep40
@slipfirep40 2 жыл бұрын
They sacrificed 10% power for more low end grunt and improved throttle response, in a car that weighs 10% more, and doesn't feature the fan based active aero or legendary 3 person center seating arrangement. Both vehicles have an engine tuned for the intents and purposes, the T.33 is a bit better for blasting around town, and the t.50 is loads more fun when driven in anger, preferrably on a closed course.
@XennialGuy
@XennialGuy 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, this is almost a case of the Osborne Effect. They should not have been talking up this car and engine before deliveries of the T.50 have even begun. If anything, the engine should have been revision 0.9, and each subsequent car a step down. Instead of using words like "improved", he should have emphasized the engine was "pruned", or "massaged" for the GT experience.

@Damien - The Super Car business has changed, there are more rich people now so they need to keep them coming. Plus Gordon Murray said in his interview with Carfection that they need to keep their people busy, there is a brand new business to run. On top of this, all T50 owners are buying a piece of appreciating art they can have fun in, not really being hosed I would say. I feel so lucky that GMA even exists, they are probably going to be the last boutique super car maker. Edit - Also to add they did in fact give all T50 owners first dibs on this car and already half are sold! And only 3 people have chosen the DCT.

If you have the means, you should buy one, regardless of the GMA marketing strategy. It’s the last NA V12 supercar they will produce. I’d give anything to have the opportunity to spec one from the factory new. You’ll never get the chance again. Plus most the “upset” owners will quickly forget when they floor it and hit 12 grand revs for the 1st time.

Interesting thoughts. I will point out that the engine in the T.33 is not an "improved" version of the T.50 engine, but a "changed" variant. They traded off 10% of its peak power output to get better low-end torque and throttle response. Each engine is tuned carefully for the aims of each car. Once youve dispensed with the man and the brand, T.50 flaunted four big differentiators between it an almost anything else: Light weight N/A V12 manual Center driving position/3 seat Fan-based active aero The T.33 only gets two of those differentiators, which are far less compelling. I think that the T.33 release is proper and logical. They will likely be using the same team with similar components, so it makes sense for them to be manufactured back-back. They are a small operation and these sorts of concerns are critical. Since there are only 100 of each, and they are fundamentally different products, one car does not detract from the other.
@smallboxesmedia
@smallboxesmedia 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, quite a few inaccuracies in this report. In addition there will be 300 T33 cars; 100 coupes plus 100 each of two other variants including a spyder/ targa clearly just by looking at the roof. While I can understand the proximity of this launch to T50 causing some concern, GMA has to get these cars out before the ice ban comes in. The price is high but if he can shift then fair play, he’s clearly aiming to create a high tech engineering business (a bit like Rimac) not sell units.

Which is, in isolation, a fine looking B pillar. And also works well on the Alpine, but with the T33 it just look wrong and disproportionate. I actually like the look of the T33 quite a bit more than the T50 and even with theB pillar would take it over the T50. But if only it had the B pillar from the T50, it would look like a much more cohesive design.

I suspect the reason for GMA releasing the T.33 so soon after the T.50 so they can produce the 100 cars before the ban on ICE vehicles. As for the looks, I think it's a beautiful car and I see a bit of the 1967 AlfaTipo 33 (which has as similar name to the T.33) and Detomaso P72 at the rear, which is another stunning car to hopefully be released soon.

Personally I really like the slightly retro 60s futurism of the styling - especially the echoes of Porsche 904 Carrera GTS. It plays a bit like a greatest hits album with a 904 front end, a Targa midriff and a backend from a Lotus. There are going to be 300 of them, so not quite as rare as a T50. Having seen the T50 in the flesh at Goodwood, you know the detail, even in the bits you can’t see will be beguiling and the noise from that V12 is as thrilling as a touch on the arm from Halle Berry. I don’t have a problem with the proximity of the two models. You can get Rolex watches at hugely different price points, but they both tell the time. And the timing doesn’t annoy me either. In fact what really grates my elbows is when companies like Ferrari introduce a base model and then wait a year or two before making an unecessary fuss over a convertible and a hot version. Why aren’t the model variants all released at the same time so buyers can just choose which one they want? It’s bogus and pretentious exclusivity, we all know they are going to arrive eventually. Porsche Targa owners don’t get huffy because there is also a Coupe, Concertible, GTS, GT3, GT3RS and other model variants, you pays your money and takes your choice. Personally, I think a Lotus Emira would deliver the similar lightweight thrills for a fraction of the cost. But if one is looking to breathe slightly more rarefied air, then, if finely tuned, retro inspired, driver focussed, British born, totally personalised aesthetic beauty is your thing - and it is mine - I would hand my lottery winnings over to Jensen Button for one of his Radford Type62-2. This film was a good addition to the T33 KZbin canon - it’s important to get a an experienced, less sycophantic perspective that comes at the subject from the point of view of a potential owner. And good luck in your quest for Ferrari omnipotence. It is a wonderful idea that I am sure will prove extremely popular. Please don’t exclude The Dino, they sit a close second behind the 904 in my dream garage.

This car is the last naturally aspirated V12 GMA is going to make, its heavier and less powerful than the T.50, less of an event without the fan, centre seat, or F1 likeness, it hasn't gone all out with a totally carbon chassis, and its base architecture is going to be used for 300 cars (bringing down the price a lot). It also loses a lot of the pedigree of the T.50 through losing a lot of the record breaking stats of the T.50 (highest revving, fastest revving, under a tonne, etc). It's basically the T.50's little brother while all future models will be cousins

I think now that most of the R&D has been done, they should now focus on a much much more affordable car that has a smaller derivation of this engine. Say a V6 based on theV12 with everything else being the same except maybe slightly changed chassis. Since the R&D has been done on this carbon fiber chassis, they should incorporate much of it on the affordable model. However, since CF is expensive and laborious process, maybe look into a chassis that is a mix of aluminum and CF (and they would only have to focus on the R&D for this new chassis). The rest of the car will be similar but maybe with less expensive pieces throughout and a total heavier weight of 1250kg. A manual, 1250kg, 300 HP V6 automobile with Gordon Murray's name on the package. And instead produce maybe 5,000 cars (so way way more but still very exclusive) with a price of ~$75k. And if the T50 makes a profit of$200k per car ($20million) and the T33 makes the same amount of profit ($20million) they can put the $40million dollars toward R&D of a new, affordable, aluminum chassis and crash testing. Plus with 5,000 deposits for the new car (at around $5k per deposit) the $25million collected from the deposits and a total amount of around $65million, GMA can easily develop a new chassis, test for new crash testing, create a new design for the car, plus look into using slightly less valuable and overly expensive parts in order to focus so stringently on weight. All of which will make the car much more affordable. Things like the engine, transmission, suspension components and brake components will have already been developed. So it wouldn't require much more funding to make this reality. On top of all of that it would make GMA a revenue of around $375 million plus it would put GMA on the map for many many more people around the world. And would make a Gordon Murray product a feasible and attainable reality.

I was expecting something more exciting and cutting edge from GM but instead his designs look like something Mclaren has already come up with and the whole ethos behind GMA seems like a cost grab for people who missed out on the F1. I mean the fact he said no model will exceed a 100 cars means he's probably planning to release 10 different variants each capped at a 100 cars.

Gordon just wanted to earn a bit more money. He took the same thing and repackaged it. Hes really smart bussinessman too. He took the engine that produces 12k rpm and stuck an ugly fan on it. And hen he took a ffew revs of the engine but also took the ugly fan off of it so it basically has the same value as the previous car. The first car everyone bought because of the 12k rpm so he could get away with making it ugly on purpose so he could sell the next car. Dude is smart

Overall there will be 300. 100 coupés, 100 spiders and 100 racers. To no one's surprise, the demand for the manual is already enormous while the paddle shifter has only been sold by a handful. I can't see many people paying well over a million quid for a modern, lightweight McLaren but what do I know. Edit: The rear end strongly reminds me of the XJ220.

I’ve not watched all the youtube previews of it, and I doubt you have either. T33 sounds as if it might be the cadet corps version of one of the vehicles the Ukrainians are recycling for their neighbour. It is a rather unlikely epithet for a sports car but perhaps Mr Murray is also planning SUVs in which case I quite understand ? The devil is in the anorak detail between the two models: the chassis is different and objectively, the dash is better on the T50 whereas the "threesome" seating is too much. Fret not, the engines are probably just a few squeaks of a mouse apart, BMW style. As for the price...I would prefer to talk to Dallara or Alpine over either of these cars. Just imagine the headache of driving a car with such a high pitched engine noise (most policemen will be looking out for big bike) and/or wiping off the sticky fingermarks...

I agree with you about the timing of the reveal, and the fact that the V12 is being used but according to Murray, prospective T50 clients were made aware of the 33 when signing up for their cars for this very reason, so they could choose one or the other, or both. You clearly didn't listen to any of the other walkthroughs of the 33 and the descriptions about how the engine differs. Just like Huxxy says, this is not an improvement on the 50 engine but a retuned variant using some different internals and a thousand revs knocked off the top, for improved tractability for 'daily driving', whatever that might mean for a vehicle of this value

On a side note, I bet both of the models will turn out to be the most environmentally friendly car line up of 202x coz almost their entire CO2 emissions are solely down to their production...they ll easily beat any EV, hydrogen, fuel cell car for a long time to come as those start out with a CO2 burden and are even likely to be driven whilst the Murray cars will spend 99.9% of their lives in a collection... . So if a V12 line up gets the crown for the most eco friendly cars ever produced or at least of 202x, I d find that quite amusing and worth the effort :). Just imagine the cover and title on "Tree huggers mobility magazine - Best of 202x edition".... Wholeheartedly agree in general and even more so when it comes to the T33 vs T50 comparison. If I had bought the T50, I d be fuming now. At least in my book, the T33 is not only the far better looking one but no, it apparently also comes with an extremely similar (epic) engine. But well, clearly am not in the market for any of these and the prices they go for rather make me smile. Am simply not a fan of cars being produced as collectible items but I assume that to those in that very market, it s appealing and they probably get both.

@@stephhamilton8100 Well let's be realistic here. I don't think Gordon Murray has ever been involved with a production car that actually looks stunning. And I would even argue that in terms of design, his cars tend to be wrought with the worst possible design language that a supercar/hypercars can have; a generic and even boring look. He quotes that he doesn't like aero which really stands out, and likes a clean design but so do I, and he could've designed a car to be simple and elegant while also being utterly beautiful. It seems as though he focuses too much on engineering and as a result, creates a car that has its design elements which meet aerodynamic requirement, safetly requirements, while also acting as basicsllg a package/wrapper which all of his engineering prowess can be dumped into. It all just seems very.....generic. Now im strictly talking about design here, not the engineering excellence and the ambition to develop a car that has engagement and visceral feel has its ultimately goals (which has been done almost to perfection). Thus, it's really no surprise that his car is a typical "generic* mid engined car, and that this design (in particular the T.50, less so T33, which I actually like the look of much more) is more or less a carbon copy of the McLaren F1.

For my take on the T33/50….. firstly, I suspect none of us commenting can afford one, so let’s not over indulge in critiquing them too much 😉 These are unicorn vehicles with hyper-prestigious design and build provenance. Only the mega-rich, flippers and collectors will be buying them and we can only hope that they are driven and enjoyed. Cars of this type will be gone in the next few years and Mr. Murray will either be celebrated or chastised for his V12 Faberge eggs. One thing is clear - they’ve created attention and rightly so. I fully respect Gordon Murray as a creative genius, but there is a feint whiff of snake oil salesmanship here….. the next few months will be interesting ☺️

The t50 is lighter with the t33 using more aluminum etc. The t50 has alot of unique features in the automotive world that we've never seen, whereas the t33 is very standard 2 seat midship with a v12. As you know the cost to produce something using ONLY state of the art materials is astronomical.
