The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Күн бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
The Catechism looks at matters relating to scientific research, bodily integrity, and the dead with the lens of the dignity of the human person. Fr. Mike helps us navigate the Catechism’s teachings by acknowledging science and technology as a good while emphasizing restrictions and conditions to ensure respect for the dignity of persons. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2292-2301.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

I LOVE your work on The Bible in a Year and the Catechism in a Year. As a priest, I recommend them all the time even as I listen to them myself. Pastorally, I wish you had addressed the issue of scattering ashes or other abuses of funeral Rites of the Church. If you ever remake this episode or were tempted to put an addendum on an episode, this would be the one. It is my most common pastoral problem. Any help you can give, as yours is such an authoritative voice, would be appreciated. (I know you did an Ascension Presents video on this topic where you hit it out of the park. Just an addendum mentioning that link would be appreciated.) God bless and thank you for your incredible work. You are a blessing to the Church. Your Bibible in a Year helped prepare my mom for a Holy Death. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Sorry for the loss of the beloved priest Fr. Sal. I am sure that your whole parish will be missing him for a long time. I know how hard it is to even get a priest to cover a parish these days. I have a retired priest running my mission parish and another parish 40 miles apart. I do not know what we will do when he is forced by health to really retire Praying for your priest in eternity and for your earthly parish.🙏🙏🙏

An important analysis of how to respect the body. It also shows answers to some important questions like organ donations, cremation, human testing, and crimes that involve harm. The overall theme is to be safe and to keep others safe. Also, to not consent to anything that goes against God and also not do anything without anyone's consent. Thank you so much for your work and analysis, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension. I'm praying for you and for fellow listeners

Thank you Fr. Mike! A small group in the parish I am part of has been following this ministry since the start of the year, and it has already started to bear the fruits of the Spirit as it led those involved to increase their efforts to be led by the Holy Spirit to grow the parish community and work on our flaws. Personally, it has been amazing since I really wanted to go through the Roman Catechism, but I could never have done it as well without this ministry you are doing. We as a group will be going back through your Bible in a Year next year in our parish, and after that plan to go into the encyclicals. Going from no permanent adult study group to having one with a road map extending out two years, along with inspiring an entire set of people to assist with catechesis of middle school confirmation going forwards has been a needed service for our parish. Thank you for your continued service and impact which you will never fully see!

October 27, 2023 Will you please take a moment and pray with me? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen.

Greeting! CIY community. The advancement of science and technology should have unconditional respect for fundamental moral criteria of the human person and his alienable rights. Our body and soul are intended for resurrection and provided there is no denial of faith and resurrection cremation is allowed by the Church. We have the Holy Spirit within us through faith and baptism but sometimes we are broken. Vasectomy in men and hysterectomy in women would be against the moral law of the Church. Let us pray for all in the CIY community.

With regards the Crusades and the Inquisition? What we need to know is that we are looking at history through the eyes of English history, and Protestantism. That is the whole world view. When England went Protestant, it had to vilify the Catholic Church, to justify itself. It turned the Catholic Church into a "subversive enemy" in it's own view of itself, whereas until then, England was Catholic. In breaking with the Church, and granting Church property and lands to the gentry class, that class had a vested interest in ensuring a Protestant view prevailed. Coinciding with this was the enmity between England and Catholic France and Spain. Thereby Catholicism was made something "foreign." Thus the "Spanish Inquisition" became a byword for what was evil, though it was instrumental in keeping Spain Christian. We are still influenced by this whole way of thinking. For an English Protestant to become Catholic, as many do? They often feel they are "disloyal" to the crown in the process, but in fact they are rediscovering what is their own heritage.

Happy Friday, everyone! For those not aware, in every description of every video there is a quick summary such as this one: "The Catechism looks at matters relating to scientific research, bodily integrity, and the dead with the lens of the dignity of the human person. Fr. Mike helps us navigate the Catechism’s teachings by acknowledging science and technology as a good while emphasizing restrictions and conditions to ensure respect for the dignity of persons. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2292-2301." If you look right under the video where it says the number of views and when it was uploaded, there's a "...more". If you click that, you'll see it! Hope this is helpful for note takers or helpful for reading before watching/listening! Thank you, Fr. Mike Schmitz, the Catechism in a Year production team, Ascension Presents, and everyone here for your spiritual and financial support! =) Prayed for all of you in my Rosary this morning. What is best for the human body when doing scientific research, is good. However science or scientism cannot give answers to all problems; it cannot answer the question "why". I was told by my priest that one needed to bury the ashes in sacred ground which would be a cemetery. All cemeteries require that the ashes be put into a crematorium. These Crematorium cost $2000.00 and I do not see why the ashes cannot be buried in the urn that they are in at the funeral mass. It is not like the ashes are going to decompose like a whole body.

Our Catholic country cemetery allows to bury ashes.
@dianefrank3688
@dianefrank3688 Жыл бұрын
@@DarlaTurner-vt4pn The small town in Iowa and almost all city cemeteries require crematorium which cost $2000.00. They will not let you bury just the urn that was in the church with the ashes for the funeral mass. It is a rip- off as the ashes unlike the whole body do not decompose and leak into the ground. That is what the crematorium is for and therefore totally unnecessary for ashes. The cemeteries & the funeral place just found another way to get more money as they didn't quite make enough on cremation without the fancy casket. I hate people being taken advantaged of in their time of grief. Always check to see if it is required at your cemetery as the funeral director might be saying it is required when it is not. THANK YOU❤ for posting this and I am going to double check with the church who owns the cemetery to be sure that the crematorium is required for ashes in the case of my son & me. 🙏💜🙏

Fr. Mike, question regarding cremation. In the movie, "The Way", the father had his son cremated and spread his ashes along the Camino. Does the church recognize spreading ashes or if a person is cremated, are you required to bury the ashes in one location? Thanks!

I am wondering how the body will be resurrected (only God knows, true) if it has been cremated and or partially wounded and or organs placed into other bodies? It’s just something I ponder.

I wonder the same. My brother was cremated at his request, and I am concerned whether we did the right thing. However, I would think that Christians who died unintentionally by incineration, like 911 and Maui victims, would still be able to be resurrected. 1 Corinthians 15:44 says we are given spiritual bodies. And, Adam was created from dust, so there is no limit to what God can do. I still would prefer to be buried, so that my family doesn’t have to wonder and worry about my afterlife.

@@flucheaux The bodies that are buried whole do not remain that way after many years. You can talk to a funeral director and he will explain how the whole body decomposes. If God can resurrect a decomposed body He can certainly resurrect ashes. 💜🙏

@@dianefrank3688 yes! What about those who've been buried or lost at sea? Those who've sadly been turned to dust on 9/11, and such instances of explosions from various means? I'd say God's got it covered. I do believe that if one is deliberately cremated there needs to be respect with the ashes. No keeping them on a mantel, making them into garden stones, scattering them, etc. Need to be respectfully, and honorably buried in a designated cemetery where the grounds will be kept as such.

@@kathywiens9852 I had always heard that they need to be buried on sacred ground (cemetery that has been designated for burial). The ashes have to be present in an urn at the mass if you want a Catholic funeral mass. If the ashes are not present you will not get a Catholic funeral mass, you will just get a memorial . I have already paid for my cremation in FL then my ashes will be mailed up to IA were I have paid for the funeral and made arrangements for a Catholic mass. My ashes will be placed in a crematorium(required by law in a cemetery) and buried on top of my mother at her grave sight. Each grave plot is allowed one whole body & one cremated body. My son is doing the same thing except that he will be buried on top of his grandfather, who was his hero.💜🙏 I live next door to a Christian church and know the minister quite well. I ask him the same question you asked me and this was his answer. I would not worry about it--He is God and He can do anything and everything. ❤🙏

The "data" extracted under any kind of torture is worthless. Everyone has a breaking point, and the victim will say whatever the torturer wants to hear. Which may be anything other the true situation.

In addition to the inquisition and the crusades (this is probably going to be a hot take) but I think another example of why this specific part of the catechism needs to be said is because of the history of the Irish republican army. For those who don’t know about it in short, they’re basically a an armed militia/rebellion, who fought against the British monarchy during the Irish war for independence/Anglo-Irish War. Some consider the IRA to be guerrilla freedom fighters, others consider them terrorists. To a significant extent the war was motivated by Catholic persecution by Protestants in England. And many of the IRA members exercised violence despite pastoral guidance from the Pope to pursue peace. it’s important for us to remember that even in the 20th and 21st century violence can enter the hearts of all of Christian and non-Christian alike to resort to some terrible things, which is why these teaching should be reiterated for future generations

There is only one victim. Do you think there's an adult human being in the world that doesn't know where they came from? Is there an adult human being that actually believes that they were grown in a Cabbage Patch or they were delivered by a stork in a little cloth pouch. Do you think there's a human being in the world that hasn't heard of an adoption? There is only one victim. Everyone else in the process is a conscious intelligent adult.

@Brian. True Brian. But you are now "preaching" to the converted. To the crowd who already shares your view. Problem is you just want to argue. and give the Catholic Church no credit whatsoever. Even when you fully agree with its view.

Thank you for the insite on torture, inquisition, diference of church and civil. I couldn't help but notice a similar response the church has taken in our time on how they handle abandoned spouses in marriage. The tribunals force these marriages through the torture and cruelty the culture has on marriage via the civil courts. Even if the tribunal has been asked to step in they will not claiming they cant do anything or it will be forcing someone. When divorce is granted they deal with annulments, handing them out in many diocese like candy. I seen children psychologically conditioned to affirm divorce not just accept it as a free will choice but that it was the will God and that person that chose it is not committing any wrong cause we cant judge. I pray for tribunals to end the omission, they do, in their lack of stepping in. An observation I have made they seem to take the seat of pontius pilot governing the clean up of the torture they let happen. This is the devils war on marriage where do the Shepard's stand I do say with genuine respect as I cry out for virtue to be displayed in this war by our leaders.

I truly understand and agree to a certain degree what you shared here. It is a definite sign, and a bad sign, of the depraved times we live in.. My question is this. Should either party in a divorce be forgiven of wrong doing? Even if after years of decernment either party has come to a place of acknowledgment, repentance, and contrition over whatever led to the breakdown of the marriage? I only ask because I do think we need to remember the Church has always been and needs to be a place, that through the Sacraments, is a hospital for sinners with God's never ending love and Mercy. If this going through the annulment process don't try their best to learn, mature and grow in the Faith, that's not the Church's fault. All of our journeys are filled with a certain degree of sin. Many of the Saints life's didn't started off very sinful. We must always be a Church of hope. There is more I write but I'll leave it there. We all know that the attack on the family has been the devils #1 plan this past couple of generations. He's definitely succeeded in that. All we can do is speak out about the harm and work to do better. Even the divorced need to do that.

@@kathywiens9852 as I journey on my stand for marriage I look not just at the magesteriums legality on the matter but in union with Scripture and Tradition. To answer your questions in union with the Church being a hospital I would say this, yes we should forgive not just either party but both should forgive as you have stated we all sin to a degree. These vices we take into the Sacrament of Marriage or are formed in marriage as a response to the lack of the sacrificial call. These wrongs vices or sins are the very thing Christ is asking us to help our spouse overcome as we are called to be our brothers keeper 3rd end of marriage the salvation of the spouses. The acknowledgement is an acknowledgement of wrongs and the mere fact they have happened by self and the other it should be noted that we ought not to focus on emotional distress from the acts but objectively veiwed so to see Christ and have a rational view of how this hurt compares to His passion. To stay true to the Sacrament we are all called to repent in marriage this does not mean just to God in the confessional (very necessary) but also through our spouse (children if blessed with) to God and in true contrition a willingness to do penance not just that which we recieve in the confessional but meeting the rational requests of the spouse in order to help grow virtue in both. These requests should not be forced via court order but encouraged by the spouses and fostered by the Church community (call of the communion of saints). Christ died for His Spouse at her very hand and when resurrected He did not seek a knew bride but forgiving His first calling her to virtue. Virtue is how we combat vice. I am not saying any of this is easy but the crosses do become lighter as we the Church help to properly step in as Simon did with Christ to carry the weight even though it was not Simon's cross as it appears on the surface of the story.
