So, first she convinced the poor lad to leave earth and become an alien slave. Then she made sure they get as late as possible along the way, while also criticizing and judging him for hurrying up to the ship. In the end, when he is finally ready to go be an alien puppet, she tells him that he has changed and decides to stay behind and die instead. What a nice story.

So he never decided to leave before they arrived? Given up all the reasons to help others when he thought it was now useless? Yep. We all love our dystopias, don't we? And he had no opportunity to meet a different woman? Come on. Sure, she's a bleeding heart that cares about others. Boohoo. You can all decide to be with a heartless bitch if you want. The moment she dumps any of your asses to say, "Be seeing you sucka" you'll swear up and down she was the best? He could have decided he does not want to be with someone like that. At any point. Why do men act like other men are really that gullible? I've yet to meet any man that decides to do something major without logic being involved.

To put a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits slant to it: The final ships sound their horns and lift off. With all of the alien's newly acquired livestock/slave labor safely restrained; the signal is sent to a ship parked just outside our solar system to switch its holographic generator off. The purple hue gives way to cool moonlight cast across the beach. The scene fades from the couple's astonished faces to a classically designed room with a lit fire place glowing against the fine wood embellishments of a study lined with old books. Against the crackling of burning logs a shadowed figure raises a bubbly champagne filled glass and pierces the relative silence. "A toast! Here's to a fresh infusion of technology and a population size far more manageable. What a fine punctuation to decades of negotiation! It was a very reasonable transaction." Comfortable in a decadently upholstered chair another takes a sip and contemplates. "Yes, more manageable, but willing to die. There will surely be outrage." "Ah yes, but the outrage is always desired. Its the sweet chorus of confusion and anger we wait for before we provide a solution. The outrage will eventually give way to their pride of staying behind. We'll see to that. And when it does, we'll be ready to 'protect' them and insure such an unfortunate deception never happens again.......as we always have." Scene fades out to light laughter.

Wouldn’t make any sense to make a light show just to get slaves. They are an advanced species. All they had to do is drug the atmosphere to make us into sheep and just direct us to board their ships. Slaves safely acquired..... No muss no fuss.

It would not surprise me.But as previously stated an advanced race would not need to spend the effort. If they were an advanced but warlike race for example. They could simply display their technological/military might.Show the global population that their military's cant defend them. Then tell every government on Earth at the U.N. we want slaves. Each country will provide a qouta which will be determined by the current population of their nation or country.Resist or fail to comply and their will be consequences.Your war machines will be decimated utterly. Then we will take the required slaves from your civilian population until the qouta from that region has been filled. You have 24 of your hours to decide.

+R Hayat wow. correct. to be honest, i didnt think you are asking out of this possibility. the word "visibile" had mislead me. it depends on the position of the supernova in the sky and the position of the observer. remember that the days are much longer near north pole. this means the sun is visible a very long time at those positions even if the earth is rotating.similarly, the supernova can be seen most of the 24 hours if its position produces a similar condition for north america. moreover, judging from actor's clothes it is winter. which means days are short.which increases the possibility of nigh vision.

+anthony luetmer The slave trade is a THEORY from frightend humans. I don't think it was literally meant as we beeing slaves. When he says they will own us he means that we are at the mercy of the aliens. Humanity looses it's freedom of choice because it will be in a huge debt to the aliens and they can do with humanity what they want. So if this situation would hypothetically happen it should be a new begining in my opinion. To leave behind our divided and violent past. Starting a revolution against the hand that once helped you isn't a good start.

Excellent movie, if only the world knew they ARE facing an incoming supernova that has been referred to as The Event; The EMPCO. REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT IS CALLED IT IS THE REASON FOR THE CALAMITY IN THE HEAVENS AND THE CATASTROPHIC WEATHER AND EARTH CHANGING EVENTS HAPPENING NOW ON AN ESCALATING SCALE. Thank you for sharing your insight. with such clarity.

I loved the story. When we love, and depending on what we love, life becomes surprising. Sometimes we do not have to be superheroes to discover that our strength is greater than life itself, making us understand that existence is only a detail and that we need more to complete ourselves - this is what gives meaning to our lives: to live but more fully. Fantastic!

After watching this again after 6 years, it's still a fine little film. Congratulations, cast and crew, and the person who wrote the short story on which the film was based. I've had a few acquaintances criticize the female lead and her choices towards the end of the film as if it personally affected them in some way , which I found a bit strange and disconcerting , but it's a film , the characters made their choices , and I thought it was poetic and moving. I'm going to google you Mr Whitmore and see what else you've done. All the best !

Hell no! Who knows what the future holds for the people who went up in the ships. We know next to nothing of the ship owner’s intentions. Like the graffiti said, I’d remain on Earth rather than possibly be a slave or worse. There are worse things than death. A supernova crash would be so fast, like an ant’s experience when killed by a shoe stepping on it. At least that is how I feel about this!

And on the slave or die thing. Contrary to what the description would have us think, slavery is not an established or absolute reality. There is merely a chance that they could be enslaved. In this situation, perhaps a good chance of it, but there's also every possibility of being handed a new life on a silver platter. If slavery was what was being headed into, then revolution is inevitable. Sure, the civilization is spread interstellarly. What's not to say humanity won't follow, in their slave status? With enough numbers and sympathizers, (and humans being humans) it is an event with a very real chance of happening, given time. Although, who knows how an interstellar race might treat slaves.

That was my conclusion as well. Life as a possible slave versus death? Even if enslaved, you could eventually form an uprising, as humans have demonstrated multiple times in the past. A species that is advanced enough to detect a supernova's effects on an underdeveloped world heads to save the species so it can enslave them? Unlikely, as they'd probably already have automatons to do all the drudge work. Why enslave an unpredictable, violent species? The lack of any applied common sense or reasoning in this story defies any possible suspension of disbelief. The alien ships looked cool as hell though.

@@s.u.2412 Actually this sort of thing did occur. The Jews thinking they were being resettled in the late 1930's and early 40's. Many went voluntary on to trains and transports to what they thought was escaping hostile oppression to a new beginning. It didn't end well. It happen to many who jump on the Bolshevik Revolution they became their own victims. Human nature is filled with many a nuance where common sense is overpowered or shoved aside. Kind of like waking up at night to run to the bathroom not turning on the hall light and tripping or falling. We all do it. In the story it is basically a hitchhiker taking a ride from a stranger.
