I feel it comes through to studio somehow how they play live. Because live they are so much louder, so much in your face like rock and metal and not nearly as soft even when playing the same songs. I was really surprised how different the live performance was. So much heavier than expected.

Poets of the Fall is SO underrated. This song hits hard for me. It's an emotional trip on how we gradually lose our innocence throughout our lives (the game of avoiding failures) while our true self shows up (when true colors will bleed). The scenes with the little girl being allured to a carnival full of lustful men reinforces this even more.

PotF have had their songs in all of Remedy Game Studio's games, beginning with Max Payne 2. The one that got me was WAR from Alan Wake. Then I found out that they also produced music under their fictional band name of Old Gods of Asgard (also from Alan Wake). Love them!!!! Haunting songs.

I can see that but I think it's about a relationship. He realizes that his inability to own up to his past mistakes and his own defects of character(the same 2 verses you wrote) were a big part of why it ended. Regardless of his recognition that the relationship was doomed and had harmed him(Water creates rust), he still wants her to come back to him.

Thank you Elizabeth and everyone who recommended this - you brought me back a decade and a half to when this song broke. I'm emotional just listening to this and seeing such a powerful reaction. Finns are a small people, and while we have many bands that took off internationally, it's always somehow a proud moment when Finnish music gets picked up and recognized. But this was a beautiful song, both in writing and performance, and the music video itself is amazing: Not just Marko's singing but his acting as well - just look at the way he slams his palm on the glass at "when the heart is yearning", or that look in his eyes when the camera fully catches it - is so emotionally powerful. Then there's the makeup and costumes, the set design, cinematography, lighting, effects, all of it. Seeing Elizabeth reacting to it and excited and moved by it added another layer. Thank you again.

I thank Remedy games, specifically Alan Wake for turning me onto Poets of the Fall. I think it was the song "War" and it came on an in-game radio...I had to stop and just stand motionless in that little warehouse so I could listen to the entire song. The slimmed down re-recordings of select songs they did in the Alexander Theatre are nothing short of incredible. If you've played or have seen games from Remedy Entertainment, like Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Control, you've heard their songs. This is how I found the band. Their keyboard player & composer "Captain" was a friend of Remedy's founders from the demo scene, as he had been doing music for computer demos. When Max Payne 2 came out, PotF did the theme song, "Late Goodbye", for it and they have been doing music for Remedy games ever since. My first time hearing them was their song "Lift" on the Futuremark graphic demo / 3D card benchmark test software, which, at the time, was connected to Remedy, until Futuremark branched into a seperate company. The second time was when I heard them play an acoustic version of Late Goodbye on a Finnish late night Talk Show. Besides doing music under their own name for Alan Wake, they even pose as a fictional traditional Heavy Metal band Old Gods of Asgard, that is part of the plot of the game, half of their songs in the game OST credited to Poets and the other half to OGoA.

About how people are so emerged into this material side (carnival of rust), they don't see each other. Like this girl in the video wearing a mask. People go past each other. The lyrics hit in a place of vulnerability and total understanding on the second watch, along with the masterful videography and rich visual symbolism, I especially love the mirror scene. Nice! I'm from Finland and I've seen Poets of the Fall live 3 times, 2 times in the audience, both times together with my wife and once while working on the concert security. I think I've bought 5 of their albums on CD. Plus, of course, those Remedy games they've played on, like Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Control. In Alan Wake, not only do they contribute to the OST with their own name, they also have a funny cameo playing as Old Gods of Asgard, an old, forgotten, heavy metal band, that links in to the events of the game in a major way. A couple of band members are locked in the same mental asylum Alan gets committed to and later, their music and stage props actually help Alan fight the forces of evil! The DLC to Control links that game to the world of Alan Wake and both PotF and OGoA appear on the soundtrack. Captain, the keyboard player and composer of Poets was a friend of Remedy's founder since the day they were both in the computer demo scene, Captain using his pseudonym while doing Amiga MOD music. MOD is a music file that has both the instrument samples and the notation, written with a so-called tracker program, a special program where you write the notes in text and the instrument numbers and effects in hex number format. Typical tracker programs would be SoundTracker on Amiga or FastTracker on MS-DOS.

an unnecessary addendum but i haven't seen anyone mention it yet - Marko's mastery over the English language is really, really extraordinary, and i mean that wholeheartedly. his lyrics are wild rides through reference and rhyme - the entirety of the Twilight Theatre album is a good example of that, but the songs Given and Denied and 15 Minute Flame are probably the strongest examples. @@lydiablues English is a compulsory subject in schools in Finland from around when the kids are 7-9 years old to when they're 19 these days. Omg Twilight Theater is on my top favourites ❤️ The whole album is amazing. It has such a nostalgic yet matured feel to it for me. Not sure how else to describe it lol. I can listen to it however I'm feeling and it takes me to the same emotions every time. And yes, the way they write the lyrics one has to be extremely proficient in English. Given and Denied is my favourite by them for that reason; the emotions in the words and phrases, the way he articulates certain emotions when singing, and the live performance album was even better IMO.
@Orkidaisy

@@myfaceismyshield5963 Actually, English isn't compulsory in Finnish schools. You have to start learning some foreign language, but you can also pick for example French or German if it's offered by the school. English is the most common one by far, though, and in many schools it's the only option. Marko's mother has apparently spent a lot of time in England and taught the language to her son from start, so he's basically bilingual. He has also studied English in University and spent time in the US and Ireland as an exchange student. That explains the lack of accent a lot.

Since you talked about vocal range (and you're so right about how Marko uses all those little nuances and dynamics to make this so emotive without needing to span a huge range), I definitely want to mention that Marko absolutely does have a wide vocal range, it's just not displayed in this particular song. We as fans have a soft spot for his falsetto as well, and a song that I think really shows how wide Marko's range is would be Daze--it spans from his rich baritone in the verses all the way into his awesome falsetto in the choruses. Another beautiful song you should definitely listen to is Cradled in Love, which is built very much around his falsetto range, and False Kings is an excellent example of his deeper resonant baritone.

As for the industry in general, 2006/2007 was also the breaking point for most of the music videos. That's when bands like POTF were still able to make videos like this one. By 2008 and forward the budgets started to go down fast because making music videos wasn't as profitable anymore for the labels. It's not a surprise that many early 2000s music videos felt like genuine films crafted with big money in comparison to what it is now for the most artists.

YES! Finally Poets of the Fall on this channel, I was one of the people who has recommended them before, this has been one of my all time favorite bands for almost 15 years, the depth of these guys' lyricism and musicianship is almost unmatchable. I definitely would recommend to react to more of their stuff, Marko's voice goes way beyond this, where to even start, from the raspiness of his voice on songs like Psychosis and The Happy Song, to the lingering falsettos in songs like Cradled in Love and Daze. Definitely checkout something from the The Alexander Theater sessions, for a more intimate acoustic side of them, Angel is perfect there. Also their alter ego Old Gods of Asgard have produced many amazing stuff for the Remedy games, such as Alan Wake and Control. Cherry on top of the cake would be to get an interview with Marko, but that's wishful thinking on my end. Great content, keep it up!

So, I discovered this band 2 years ago and I still absolutely love them. Hilariously, I discovered them as "Old Gods of Asgard" while playing Alan Wake and Control, then years later I figured out they are actually a real band, not just playing for the video game! Their songs as Old Gods of Asgard are very few but still great as well. "Cor Cordis" printed on the ticket means "heart intellect/judgment mind/soul/spirit souls/persons (pl.) sweetheart" So, I've thought the lyrics were intended for a lover/past lover. It seems like at the end, they got something that satisfied them and left in the music video while the other person is left to "rust" 😢 Their lyrics in their discography are always just *chef kiss*🤌🏾 and he has one song he sings entirely in falsetto that I absolutely love. My favorite song lyrically and emotionally sung is Given and Denied - you should check it out! He sings it wonderfully and it brings me to tears every time. In my interpretation of the lyrics, it is in a nutshell about life's ups and downs; the things we get, the things that are cruelly taken away, and the things we are never able to have. Sometimes the things we can never have again.
