if you're gonna do Godsmack from a vocal perspective, you really oughta listen to "Voodoo".
@Fraxxxi Жыл бұрын
1998, I was sixteen and in a weird mood, I ripped Voodoo off my CD, extracted the intro part up to "...don't remember why I came" until juuust before the *ting* with whatever software we used like Audacity before Audacity. it's like 17 seconds. I dropped that file in Winamp and listened to it on repeat for four hours while playing through Quake (with the music off and the sound effects low). I thought for sure I would never be able to hear that song again afterwards, but nah, still like it to this day. and had a very memorable gaming experience into the bargain.

My favorite Godsmack song! This was also the theme song to the game Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. It was used pretty frequently and the game conditioned you very early on to run like hell any time you heard this riff, because it meant this monster that pursued you would instantly kill you if you weren't fast enough to escape.

I know you’re a huge advocate for mental well-being...Godsmack has a song called “ Under your scars” to remind everyone they’re perfectly imperfect. They (Godsmack) and Sully Erna started the “ Scars Foundation” for mental health. That song seems to have a lot of aspects you love as well....piano, orchestra etc...and shows a different side of his vocals. A lot of others are recommending “ Voodoo”...which is also great. I personally would do “ My Light” written about his daughter. It’s his Solo stuff, but showcases a lot of his diversity.

Hi Elizabeth, a huuuge Godsmack fan here. I highly recommend checking out Sully Erna's work outside of the band, it's a lot more diverse and intricate. His performance of 7 Years off the Avalon album would be an amazing place to start and would be a great way for you to not only analize Sully's vocals but also get an introduction into Lisa Guyer who is a phenomenal and a criminally underappreciated singer. Guys, if anyone wants that, too, please upvote so Elizabeth sees this 😄

I find Sully often has an almost monotone style, he does accent it, but anytime you hear his voice it is instantly recognizeable as Sully, yet he has an ability to make it so no songs sound alike. If you want to hear more of his singing voice with less grit I would recommend "under your scars by Godsmack" or "7 Years, from Sully Erna's solo album Avalon which also features excellent vocals by Lisa Guyer"

Amazing to see you pick up on Godsmack. You chose a good song to start on and I would suggest Voodoo for a slightly slower take of a song from Sully. Most all of their music is amazing (I own most of their albums, but not all of them).

Hey Liz. This is definetely a great song by Godsmack, but you should take a listen to "Under Your Scars" - it's a really moving track and video.

I've been a fan of Godsmack since I first heard 'Vampires', I highly recommend that you analyse 'Voodoo' next it's quite different from this and shows more of his range, Elizabeth. Others tracks which are also good, 'Awake' and 'Realign', and 'Unforgettable' I think that you'll really love.

Yea, Vampires is highly underrated.

@@DefinitelyNotBender I agree, it should be better known. They're such a great band overall. I hope that Elizabeth does more of them.

Godsmack!!! Great choice, Elizabeth!! Please consider "Unforgettable" for your next listen... or "1,000 HP", "Take it to the Edge", "Sick" or "Whiskey Hangover"... lots of terrific choices! ❤ Killer band! You're going to love them!!

I saw these guys live in a small venue when i was in high school and i can defiantly confirm his voice is very powerful and full. The concert was in an old play hall and it was "unplugged" or acoustic. I was also very impressed with all the little "tricks" and ways he could use his voice. I don't know if I am using the correct terminology so please forgive me, but it was almost like there was a residence or reverberation, almost tactile sensation when he would have one of those big moments; i.e. "breath into meeeeee" or the "I" that starts the chorus. It really does full a room, or in my case a play house. Almost percussive. ((auditory tactile synesthesi)) IDK, i love music and this channel but i am admittedly inept musically. I would love to see you do more of them

Been a fan since they started but just finally saw em at Louder Than Life last month. It's crazy to see how much older the band looks, but the show was absolutely incredible! Seeing young Sully here is almost a culture shock. Damn I'm getting old lol.

It's not super complex, it's not super pseudo-intellectual, you don't need a double +10 +5 roll on a d20 to decipher the lyrics or the mood behind it... sometimes it just has to be metal, nothing more 🤘

I love this band so much. They don't get as much attention as bands like SOAD or Disturbed, but they were just a big when I was in school. Try the songs "Serenity", "Re-Align" or "Straight Out of Line" next. All are great songs
@Interestingenough4 Жыл бұрын
They're still doing pretty well for themselves, though. They can pack 8,000+ seat arenas no problem, and still get new songs played on radio. Not bad considering that the whole nu-metal/post-grunge trend largely went out of fashion over 10 years, they held up far better than most of their peers.

Voodoo's got to be the way to go in terms of vocal analysis of Sully's voice. I like singing karaoke and this is the song I always choose to sing because it's at the same time very well paced but also covers a wide range of pitches. Also, the intro requires a very good breath technique (something I certainly lack but I try to do my best).

Hell yeah. I'm not sure Godsmack would really be my thing if I listened to them standalone but the connection to PoP:WW gives me the warm fuzzies whenever I listen to this song. Loved that game...'s amazing combat options. Missed the aesthetics and feel of Sands of Time though.

A huge vocal nerd like you can't avoid to listen one of the best extreme singer: phil bozeman of the band called whitechapel. he has an unique talent you can hear very clear a lot of the words he sings, despite the growl or scream (in the 2 latest album he has addeded an unespected clean vocals too, that remember Maynard keenan). the band is so awesome, my suggestions for a first time reaction is “anticure” “i will find you" or “when a demon defiles a witch"

THANK YOU for counting the meter during that main riff so people can understand the irregularity within its balance, & how neat that is! I remember playing a similar riff to a former bandmate, & he seemed SO clueless as to what I was trying to do with the timing, then playing the same riff later on to another fella, who NAILED it; so satisfying! I wanna make a quick note on the video portion, somewhat separate from the music of when the harmony first happens that you acknowledge. You only see Sully singing for about a second until he's blurred out, as the focus moves to the guitarist singing in the background. I love the way said guitarist (is his name Tony? 🤷) is given that acknowledgement there because there's often times a singer will dub their own voice in production, then live, there's ONLY the 1 voice. Sully is definitely not selfish with the spotlight, from what I've seen.

8:03 Multi-instrumentalist, yes. If I'm not mistaken, his first big professional step was as the drummer for Meliah Rage. The first Godsmack album was written and performed mostly by him alone. He has musical talent, but that is completely eclipsed by his drive. Godsmack is known for simple melodies and basic aggressive riffs, delivered with that big 90s wall of sound production.
