His Opponent is famous for losing this game. What happened in 1938 is as much exquisite as a secret masterpiece. Sit back and fathom the brilliance of this sharp style that is Alexander Alekhine.

Sacrificing on intuition takes incredible confidence, which Morphy, Alekhine, Tal & Kasparov fortunately had & which allowed them to produce so many beautiful brilliancies. Bravo for intuition!

Doubtful, his comment diminished his own calculating ability. GMs in general like to cultivate the myth that they calculate everything, however, some of the greatest players occasionally admit they calculate to a degree, and if can’t see everything, still will proceed on intuition, particularly when their clock is ticking. Some of Kasparov’s most famous sacrifices were done on intuition and general assessment of position. Seems Alekhine and Tal did so too. Key is having excellent grasp of chess principles, the courage to trust one’s calculations, and to follow one’s intuition for whatever has not been calculated all the way to mate.

I love the way you break down these games. I'm familiar with many of the names you mention because as a child I stumbled across a thin paperback by Harry Golombek, a somewhat lesser-known British champion from the same era as Alekhine. Golombek included many games in this book by the masters of his time. To hear these names again via your channel is a real blast from the past.

This game was fascinating and I especially appreciated the conversation at the end between Najdorf and Alekhine. It is reaffirming to me that the moves got so advanced that even these incredible grandmasters needed their intuition rather than solely there calculational skills to choose the best next move. Would Capablanca, Tal or Fisher have done the calculation to the end? What is your guess?

Because TCN is *TERRIBLE* at explaining and clarifying these things, let me help you: 1) Alekhine's opponent is *a Finnish player -- Eero Einar Böök* . (clarifying because he never names him explicitly; weirdly, calls him *"BURKE"* [..or something ?!..] several times in the video...) 2) The game ended at *22:33**, where Black RESIGNED after Alekhine's e5 move.* Hope this helps you !! :)
