Hey Guys, I just wanted to say thank you for the incredible support over the past few months and especially to my patrons who help to keep this channel afloat, and not to mention we've nearly hit half a million subs which is something I honestly never thought I'd reach :D I'm a lazy bugger however, so I have nothing planned for reaching the milestone, however I do have a video on how to make a video essay coming out very soon so keep your eyes peeled for that. In the video I'll say my controversial opinions on the video essay community and also give advice to anyone who wants to become a video essayist. It just so happens its release may coincide with my 500k milestone so... actually yeah, that's my half a million special, my entirely planned one. (looks side to side suspiciously) Anyway, thanks a ton to every last one of you for sticking around, and thanks to audible for sponsoring today's video. Please do check them out by clicking my link as when you do, it encourages audible to work with me again which makes my income more steady, and thus my future on KZbin far more hopeful :D (TL;DR please click my audible link so I can stave off from getting a real job) Have a great day, - Henry

I would keep Natasha's death the same, but make it so that Tony Stark's death would happen sooner in the story (before Dr. Strange or any of the other heroes earlier turned dust showed up). Tony's death would cause the most dreadful and hopeless moment in the battle (kind of like that of Dumbledore in HP6 or that of Aragon in LOTR2), and then when all hope is lost. the portals would start opening up and the tables would turn.

I freaking HATED that "diversity moment", it felt completely unearned, like there was literally no reason for all of the women in the MCU to be in the same shot together. It felt like the creators being like "look at all the women we have! Give us a cookie!!" Which felt especially cheap considering how Tony's sacrifice was SO honored he got this huge funeral with everyone in attendance, and even though Natasha made the exact same sacrifice, she basically got no acknowledgement aside from one person saying they miss her. In addition to restructuring the battle the way you described, I would also restructure the ending, so that the original avengers got their moment of recognition, but the last moment of the film was that long shot of all of them, so that we could see how far we've come since the beginning, and how many people had to fight together to save the world.

Here's the thing: The fight in LOTR is like a multiplayer match in a videogame; It feels real, every soldier is out their with their own objectives and goals to complete on top of just killing the enemy, and every single soldier has the chance to turn the tide of the battle. There is a tangible sense that either side could win. The fight in End game is like a war sequence in a single player game; it's a backdrop to the player and no matter what you do it will always end the same way, even if you stand there and do nothing the fight will end the same way, either your NPC Allies will continue to progress in endless waves inevitably overrunning the enemy, or, your NPC Allies will kill enough enemies to trigger an unavoidable cutscene where you lose. There is a false sense of "anyone could win" but it's an easily shattered façade.

For all the fan service that was in this film, it absolutely pales in comparison to what they could've done if the Infinity Stones were utilized properly: -Imagine Thor loading the Power Stone into Stormbreaker and then fighting Thanos with a partially complete Gauntlet. -Imagine hundreds of wizards and Asgardians fighting in vain to slow down Thanos while he has the Reality Stone. -Imagine either side all-but-winning the fight only for someone to use the Time Stone. @natyinthehouse4 жыл бұрын
John Smith it’s called a plot twist. In the day we live in, we don’t get surprised about what the plot of movies are anymore, especially blockbusters. Thanos was dead and there was nothing anyone else could do so it was over. The characters completely lost hope that anything could change what happened. Then Ant-Man returns and so does the hope of the Avengers. Then time travel. Then they succeeded. And the battle is their second chance to protect everything they lost and they’re gonna do it right this time. It’s the same exact stakes and they know the consequences all too well. Thanos might be from 2014, but he knows everything that happens from Nebula’s memories and he seriously sees the Avengers as a threat rather than an obstacle. He actually got to see his ideal world after his death. It’s not like he was told that he succeeded and that some people were trying to undue it in the future. He knows the threat because of Nebula and sends the Nebula loyal to him through time. In Infinity War, Thanos spends half the movie underestimating the Avengers until the very end. Endgame he brings the big guns and does it himself because there is no underestimations here. He’s from the past, but he is smarter because he learned from the mistakes his future self makes. Don’t underestimate thanos just because he’s from 2014.

This "improved" version is missing one key emotional piece. In the original, the Avengers weren't sure they succeeded in bringing everyone back. So the big emotional moment when all hope is lost is followed by "not only did we succeed in bringing everyone back, but now we have help". Learning that they brought everyone back separately from help arriving diminishes that big moment. I wish there was a way to incorporate these changes without diluting that moment's emotional impact.
@Particle9a4 Жыл бұрын
That's actually possible, just have Wong do it instead of Dr. Strange. After Thanos arrives just have him tells The Avengers that he would gather every remaining help he can find (or have Captain America told him to after noticing that Thanos bring an army). Even if the snapped not brought back, there are still the remains of Asgardians, Wakandans, and Kamar Taj Sorcerers. And the rest plays out the same.

Nat dying and setting Bruce off into Hulk is ALWAYS how I imagined it being better. In your version, have Bruce never turn into brainy Hulk. Keep him human and depressed over the 5 years. He can be in the room fixing the time machine during this version of the battle, but have him need to leave the room for some reason, maybe to grab an item that got lost in the shuffle. He leaves and sees Natasha on the battlefield die at Thanos' hand, as she sacrifices herself to save Clint. This is the moment. Bruce is standing still, silence fills his world. The tint of green envelopes his eyes. There is no stopping it now. He grows larger than ever and Hulk is unleashed in full force. He rumbles through the battle, killing all henchman in his way. He targets Thanos, gets into a rematch from Infinity War, but now gets in all the punches he couldn't get in Infinity War, beating Thanos back with great force... HOWEVER Thanos (like he does in Endgame with Captain Marvel) grabs the Power Stone and in a last ditch saving grace, punches the Hulk with it. This take Hulk out of the equation and Bruce can no longer work the machine. Hope is lost. HOWEVER at that point Doctor Strange returns through a portal with Shuri, the only other genius that can fill the void. She sees Hulk turn back into Bruce as he loses consciousness. He tells her which item she needs. She gets it and moves on. Boom, rollercoaster.

@ChrisPeteG3 жыл бұрын
100% Time travel that results in characters being un-killed is stupid. I don't mean reversing The Snap. That is something that was done, and we knew it would be undone. But when characters like Gamora and Thanos die, only for the movie to spit-out an alt-past version of them to keep them in the story, it feels cheap. Like "The original version is dead, but this is a new version with none of the character development" Also...any time travel that uses stuff like 'creating a bunch of alternate realities' feels extra cheap. So what....EVERY character has an infinite number of themselves? Of their souls?Like...."present Gamora" and "present Black Widow" have their souls exchanged for the soul stone....but then there are multiverse versions of their souls that are 'alive and well' so to speak? The minute you do the multiverse, and just make the story we've been watching "one of many ways it played out" it feels super cheap. Also...time travel only works when there is a very specific set of rules laid out, and things are executed in a very logical way that makes sense according to the established rules. Endgame just did whatever it wanted to and played a big old "well, nobody really knows exactly how any of this time travel stuff works" and that feels entirely unsatisfying. Even worse when they could have kept Thanos alive, hidden on a planet with the gauntlet protected by his army....and just made the movie a big mission to go behind enemy lines, get the gauntlet, bring it back, and undo the snap. No need for the insanely unnecessary time travel plot or any of the excessive cameos/retreads of popular scenes from the history of the franchise.

I agree that they made her too OP but they definitely found something that can counter her massive power
@jacksonscott36674 жыл бұрын
Juan Pedro_ MOV Honestly, Thanks vs. Captain Marvel was a decent fight on its own; they were pretty evenly matched on a physical level (though she obviously has the speed and flight advantage) prior to her absorbing energy from the stones, which was the point where she started no-selling his blows. The Power Stone sucker-punch was an effective way of dealing with an enemy who’d just powered up to an extreme degree. The main issue with Captain Marvel vs. Thanos is that she can casually decimate most of his forces on the way to fighting him.

my big problem with the fight when I saw it was "wow, this is cool, but i feel like just a couple of these characters have the power to take thanos down really easily but that would be Too Boring for marvel so they just downplay all these really cool abilities for Plot Convenience" yknow? so many of the characters have amazing over powered abilities and they just kinda get... swept aside so the movie could show other, less powered characters punching people.

For me, the climax starts just after Hulk snaps everyone back and Thanos arrives in his ship. The portal scene I see as equivalent to Gandalf arriving on the fifth day or Aragorn rolling into Minas Tirith with the ghosts. If the climax starts when Thanos arrives, you do get that emotional roller coaster you’re talking about. Hope when Hulk snaps his fingers, desperation when Thanos blows up the compound, hope when the big 3 team up, desperation when Thor is pinned, hope when Cap lifts the hammer, desperation when he stands alone against the army, and hope when the portals open followed by a thorough ass kicking that’s capped off with a huge sacrifice. That’s how I see it anyway. I was pretty utterly blown away by Endgame as a whole though too

My biggest issue with this final battle is: I don't know what the heck Thanos was trying to achieve? Is he just trying to kill the Avengers? If so, just blast them from the sky with his spaceship cannons. Is he trying to get back the Infinity Gauntlet? I feel like the fight comes too late. The good guys have done the saving. They've already altered time and brought everyone forward, so Thanos isn't trying to stop them, so what is he actually trying to accomplish, and why does he need an enormous army to achieve it?

Imagine that going down. him being able to perhaps change the direction of the battle when Thanos has 3 stones, and everyone is wondering what the hell to do, this is happening all over again. Coming from someone who thought this film was just okay, I think you’re missing the mark here. If you’re going to equal this battle to the Helms Deep one, then you have to acknowledge that it doesn’t start with the portals, but rather with Thanos’ attack on the compound. From that point, you’ll actually find a lot of build-up and shifting dynamics in the battle (compound attack -> Ant Man rescue -> Marvel trio gets their asses kicked by Thanos -> Cap and Mjolnir) with the portals scene being the climax. The real problem with the battle, to me, is something you only quickly touched on. There is no sense of physicality or tangibility to it; it looks like a videogame.

I agree with most of what you said. The “portals” part IS the part of the climax, years of fan service going in that whole sequence. We already saw our heroes die the movie before, we can’t afford to see them die again, and they had win
@Jk-pk1oz5 жыл бұрын
CarloMagnoTV yeah, exactly. There’s no problem with doing a victory lap scene as the climax here. Sure it ends with a lot of ‘yang’, but let’s not forget that Infinity War’s final ten minutes is nothing but ‘yin’. Even in that sense, there’s a balance to it all.
@Jaws_on_Mars2 жыл бұрын
In regards to "knowing where characters are on the battlefield", they actually did it quite well in Infinity War during the battle in Wakanda! Right after Thor shows up, he immediately begins to proceed laying waste to Thanos' forces and the retreating dropships in the air. They take time to show viewers, "Hey, Thor is up here doing his God things, so he'll be preoccupied in case something detrimental happens right at this moment." And in the next few scenes, that's exactly what happens when Thanos proceeds to wreck the other available Avengers and take the Mind Stone. I'm sure everyone was watching that scene, seeing everyone get absolutely slumped by Thanos and wondering when Thor would get there, so this scene did a great job of balancing yin and yang

Haven't finished the video yet, so perhaps I'll need to edit this comment, but when you suggest making the final battle a siege where some characters are trying to repair the time machine, while the rest hold back Thanos is almost the exact same situation as Infinity War. @@Austin-vp6qq For real, when you stop and think about it they could've solved that fight in any number of other ways. @@TrueGamer22887 Again, I disagree. It's because of the prior 10 years of films that the movie payed off so well (*especially* the portal scene), but... it wasn't as exciting as it *could* have been. Take the final battle for example. It's the climatic confrontation that has had *10* *years* of building up to! Yet while it's entertaining... it feels somewhat lacking. All the leading women roles just *happen* to come together while everyone else is who knows where, Captain Marvel could have basically taken out the whole army and Thanos herself (which downplays him severely as a threat), Dr. Strange babysat a waterfall, Black Panther practically only ran, Star Lord was a joke, the armies that came through the portals were strictly background (except the magic shields during the bombardment), half the characters practically had no spot light (Hulk, Groot, Drax [got 2 seconds], Iron Patriot, Rocket, etc), and overall... It wasn't gripping. The battle felt over the moment everyone showed up. The only emotional weight felt was Captain America standing alone, the portal scene, and Iron Man's death. For being the climax of 10 *years* of film... it felt moderately wasted.

Based on this explanation and the comparison to Helm's deep, I feel like this scene could have been saved with a few small but significant adjustments When Thanos first appears, the heroes have no backup. They're up against an overwhelming army that they are struggling not to get killed by, and Thanos doesn't even have to fight, he's just sitting back and watching. Eventually backup does arrive, a number of portals open up, and Dr Strange appears telling us that it's taking a lot of energy to bring so many people here and he needs time to get all of the players on the field. So now there's hope, but it's got the urgency of time running out as not everyone is there all at once. While reinforcements are slowly appearing, one or a few of the B-list heroes get killed by Thanos's army or Thanos himself. It's an extremely tragic moment, and it shows a lot of nearby heroes devastated at the loss. It hurts even more because some of these people just got brought back into existence only to die shortly after. There's also been occasionally some background heroes who don't have a name getting blown up or overwhelmed, so it makes it very clear that this army is a threat and lives are at stake. After one or two deaths, a lot more portals open up and that's the turning point for the heroes. They've already lost a number of allies, and they're resolving not to lose anymore. Then, when Iron Man finally sacrifices himself to end the battle, it hurts even more because even with reinforcements they had to lose the most important asset to the Avengers. They've acheived victory and saved the universe, but there was a multitude of costs in order to get that.

I went back and watched Helms Deep to refresh my memory (it’s been like 20 years) and I think it’s an impossible comparison that you’re trying to make. Helms Deep in LOTR involves only a few individual standout main characters, who direct the battle, and they engage in solo one on one fights that we are privy to throughout the scene but for the most part the armies on both sides are full of no name extras who are there to be told what to do. Also, they are behind a castle wall, which gives the enemy a single obvious goal (get through the wall and overwhelm the defenders) and the heroes a single obvious purpose (defend the civilians). Because of these two facts, the few main characters can orchestrate huge actions involving hundreds of soldiers all working towards the same goal, and in this way the battle can be constructed into one single narrative: the first approach of the enemy, the loosing of the first volleys of arrows in return, the scaling of the castle walls, the repelling of the invaders, the explosion that finally breaches the wall, the enemy’s main charge, the counterattack by Aragorn’s forces, etc. etc. etc. This is all possible because the setting is a castle, and because there are only 4 or 5 main characters who need to get heroic action moments. Contrast that with what’s going on in Avengers: there’s no obvious obstacle for either the enemy or the heroes to overcome- just a mad scramble to find and control the glove- and every single character (like frigging 30 or 40 of them) are contractually required to get their own heroic moments of action. This is obviously going to degenerate into a melee free for all, and I dont think there’s a damn thing the Russos or anyone else could have done to make it more like Helms Deep. It’s an impossible task. I think considering the limitations/challenges of this scene it actually held together extremely well (I know this isn’t what you meant, but the visual continuity is actually astonishing; all of these incredible visuals happening simultaneously and you never lose track of the action, nor your orientation within the battle space; that’s a credit to the visual effects supervisor and the editor).

So what's the problem with a big fight scene? We waited ten years for a big bad showdown and got it. It wasn't the climax - it was the build-up to the climax (Tony getting the gauntlet).

My only problem with this climax is that the movie never draws attention to the fact that Peter Quill has finally returned to Earth, his home planet
@thesmartonesback26504 жыл бұрын
Because the movie is about the original avengers it is about how there stories rap up (thors didn't but the movie gives him a climax to his character arc wich is to instead of trying to be what you think you are meant to be instead find out who you are meant to be). When it comes to ending endgame did it really good.

To make critics like this get to points of view.

I agree - I think it was epic in the same way it would be in a comic - but not in a movie. Not that it wasn't cinematic, but like you, I found it stretching out the inevitable. They had to service all the characters, but the characters did not service the story, which is why they were left with fragmented sidebars and a lack of focus. Capt. Marvel was one of the worst aspects of the movie - she just randomly turns up as Deus ex Marvel for Tony at the beginning, and again (conveniently) at the end. Again you are spot on about the geography issue. One of the most critical aspects of action sequences. I am a screenwriter - I wrote for MacGyver for 3 years back in the 80s - I would often write myself into a corner to force me to think like MacGyver so the solutions to his problems would feel organic and credible. So much of that came out of having to write for the space he was in. Like the Lord of the Rings movies, and (god help me...) The Hobbit, BIGGER is not always better. It all comes down to the foot-long hotdog midset of most Hollywood movies, they go for volume over detail. So many of these movies are just too loud to sleep through.

So you say miss marvel wasn't good or not enough on screen? What if she was, what if she kicked thanos ass alone, in the beginning and in the end? Everybody would hate that That's why it wasn't done like that

How did you get the job as the writer for McGyver?

Rick Drew unfortunately current movie and tv is controlled by massive corporations that don’t care about the art or fundamentals of story telling and character development. They see popular and want to market. The JJ Abrams philosophy of mystery boxes, mcguffins and bigger is better is the prevailing thought. The fact that big Hollywood thinks that J.J. Abrams is the new Spielberg is a cultural problem. Your exactly right, it’s the foot-long Hollywood mindset. Benioff and Weiss are exceptional adaptors of genius large scale storytelling done by GRRM, but when they had to create on their own using fundamentals and the art of story they crashed and burned leaving a fans dejected, and a corporation struggling to push forward the 5 GOT shows they had planned on.

Honestly the bad structure of the final fight is the least of Endgame's narrative issues, the whole movie past the prologue has no stakes. The whole time travel angle is not properly used, there was no risks of altering the time line, no actual threat impeding their odds of success, and a villain that is shoehorned into the ending just to have a big epic big fight.

She had to, they made her too powerful then realised she'd throw off the balance of power & remove the tension.

And just to add to that scene in which "The Big Three" would literally be the last stand: Steve looks at Thor and Tony and says "Together." It would've single handedly shown why they lost in Infinity War. Brilliant video, thank you!
@albertpop92434 жыл бұрын
This scene would have been beyond epic
@alexpartain3259 ай бұрын
The thing they needed to do to make this fight good, is to do the long take of the avengers like the first avengers movie, but instead of just them, its one by one, everyone doing something, every single character. That would have made it amazing
@Meddyyy3 жыл бұрын
I honestly wish the beginning part of the final fight between Iron Man, Thor and Cap would’ve lasted much longer. Considering that Thanos was quite literally slapping the three already, maybe they could’ve had each surviving member of the Avengers join in the fight; as much as I love a big ol’ showdown between two big armies like the battle of Wakanda, it was the much more personal and smaller scale (in terms of people involved because the universe was def still on the line lmao) fight on Titan that absolutely stole the show for me.

Just saying the title and thumbnail and pretty rude Ngl a lot a work went into it . Also people don't want to watch a 30m vid so yeah what you expect.Tbh it was a pretty good climax but it wasn't a 10/10 climax that's for sure. Infinity war was a 10/10 for sure

Me watching the movie: "Man this movie is great!" Me after watching this video: *"This fight scene is so empty and bland. It is too repetitive and not exquisite"*
@Bardoc1013 жыл бұрын
I would argue that the fight scene isn't the focal point of these scenes. It is the character moments that we are getting with the return of all our heroes. The action is secondary to what the main focus should be, and that is the characters.

This guy is so self-satisfied. The critiques and suggestions are decent enough, like solid B+ ideas - nothing to jerk yourself off over, very much screenwriting 101 conventional wisdom. Ideas are cheap.
