I think Lotso’s goons messing with his voice box and switching his voice to Spanish from the last movie, and by the end of the movie going back to English. It really messed him up mentally.

As much as the choice is controversial, I do think the series led us to show that Andy really was the only kid for Woody. He just wasnt a Bonnie toy. His main struggle in 2 was wether Andy cared about him as much as he cared about Andy. In 3, despite noone having been played with in years and Sunnyside seemingly being a chance to finally be olayed with, he was still very insistent on everyone being with Andy. Also, the video game KINGDOM HEARTS III (which had a Toy Story epiaode co-produced with Pixar and is considered by them to be canon) gives the explanation for why Toys are alive. In this universe, the love of a child causes a toy to manifest a heart of their own.

Pretty sure the struggle for 2 was "do you wanna be played with one kid for a limited time then eventually get thrown out, or do you wanna basically live in what seems to be heaven." Which is also somewhat revisited in 3 but the only difference is in 3, toys are actually being played with, but the difference was "sure youre being played with, but you dont grow an attachment to a kid and any you DO get is fleeting because they're only there for a certain amount of time." 2 was a struggle of risking being played with and eventually broken and/or forgotten, 3 was about fleeting vs lasting relationships. Also to be fair about that theory, that's somewhat been the case with "The Pixar Theory" as a whole. Which by the way, if you listen to the director's commentary, they basically and actively $#!+ on it, where as every other Pixar movie and director either outright confirms it or simply just doesn't confirm or deny. Toy Story 4 is, as far as I know, the only one that actively rejects it.

If it takes a child for the toys to come alive, then the Prospector and Gabby Gabby wouldn't be alive. They never had a child to love them. It would be a nice sentiment if they stuck with it consistently.

@@Karamarika I think for the Pixar theory specifically, it's more general "memories" (or "emotions"? I'm forgetting at the moment) that bring the toy to life, not necessarily it NEEDING to be a child specifically. If you're curious on the details and the general progression of the theory (that I'm at least aware of), most of what I know of the theory comes from the Super Carlin Bros because there is a WHOLE lot of info I'm leaving out because it would be a paragraph and a half going over the whole thing.

Since the first film, Woody helped other toys find their purpose and place, it was like that with Buzz, Jessie and all of them in the third film. Here he not only helps another toy with this, but also finds a new purpose for himself, a new home.

Yeah, He helped The Other Toys Find purpose, by teaching them his philosophy about Life only being Worth living If you're being loved by a Kid. In Toy Story 4, He does that in The Entire Movie with Forcky, Bo Peep and Gabby Gabby. And Then in The End Of The Movie, He Just betrays his own philosophy by abandoning his Child Behind.

Yes, and he wasn't loved by Bonnie, he wasn't living his own philosophy, he spends the entire film discovering a new love that he can count on. A new philosophy is learned by the character, a new purpose is found after he understands that Andy will always be his child who also no longer needs him.

Bonnie chose Woody when she found him, and Woody chose Bonnie when he left Andy. It was a beautiful conclusion but suddenly random kids occasionally are better than Bonnie?

Ok…did anyone else find it hella messed up and sad that Bonnie just moved on from Woody so fast when Andy was so hesitant on giving Woody up and believed he would be taken cared of by Bonnie so he didn’t end up taking him to college 😭 but she just forgets about him and he becomes a lost toy! Obviously it was a cute ending since he ended up being with Boe, but I just thought it was a bit sad. I actually like this movie tho, obviously not the best and I don’t like how dumb they made Buzz and how they didn’t show any of Jessie. That annoyed me, but I didn’t think it was horrible overall.

I really agree with your view on this movie! It's great how it shows different perspectives on how to live toy life: someone who doesn't want to be a toy, someone who was loved but now isn't, someone who is okay playing with any kid, not just one, and one who never had a kid but really wants to. And I agree that this movie has a great message about moving on and not being stuck with just one thought in mind. And we see it with every character and their arcs: Woody finally understands that he doesn't need to be with Bonnie, Bo Peep understands that being loyal is a great thing, Gaby Gaby understands that there are other kids than just this one girl she wanted to be with and so on.

I like that with each movie, we're exploring more places toys are likely to be. First it was a kid's room, then a toy store and a collector, then a daycare, and now a playground, antique shop, and carnival. I wonder what settings will be in future movies. Maybe we'll see the toy museum mentioned in the second movie and how those toys live.

I remember when I saw Toy Story 4 and I didn't see that ending coming, my heart brought tears when Woody said goodbye to all his friends, because I had seen them in the entire franchise always together since I was growing up, but he is happy with Bo Peep now, besides seeing how selfless he was now, giving away even his box of voice and his insignia 22:58 I lost my mind laughing at that part

I know that it is in-character for Woody to care so much about Forky, but I was never really invested in getting him back to Bonnie. That combined with Gabby not really being a villain made the story really lack that narrative drive. I think that contributes to this story feeling more unnecessary, even though it is a well told story. Also, I feel like Bo and Woody's interactions just feel off. I know Bo's gone through it in the intervening years and changed a person, but there's like 3-4 instances where she just disrespects Woody to his face with zero pushback from Woody, which does feel out of character for Woody who always had a prideful and sassy side.

Not every story needs a villain. This movie didn't lack narrative drive at all, and tbh most of the time straight up villains make stories one-dimensional, childish, even cartoonish. Gabby was a very well-written, redeemable antagonist, and she fit the theme of the story they were trying to tell in this movie perfectly. antagonists are much better narratively than villains 9 times out of 10, because they're more realistic. they make stories and characters more relatable. Woody crashed into Bo's new life and dragged her into his self-fulfilling mission. she knows the area and store better than he does, and he requested her help because of this. him following her lead, and her putting him in his place when he screws up isn't disrespectful. Kind of sounds like you just don't like a woman being in charge. Her attitude was no different than Woody's has been when he's led his group in the past few movies. Bo isn't a meek follower anymore like she was in the first movie. She has a new life and a new perspective, she's been on her own, making her own decisions. It makes sense that she won't just stand by and let Woody tell her what to do. Woody respects Bo enough to let her take the lead. That's how it should be. the person with the most experience or knowledge of a place/situation should be the one leading, regardless of gender.

@@MonAhgasInsomniAroELF To your first point, I am aware a villain or even an antagonist is not necessary for a well told story (see: My Neighbor Totoro) but for me personally if I'm not particularly invested in the exploration of the setting or the motivations of the protagonists, seeing how the protagonists overcome the forces of villainy does a lot to keep my interest. To your second point, I think it's incredibly droll that you immediately brought gender politics into this because my criticism would be applicable no matter what gender Bo was. It's not a major thing, but their interactions just feel awkward, it doesn't feel like these are friends that have known each other for years. Bo is (personally) way too terse, cold, abrasive, and strangely nonplussed by Woody acting exactly the way he always acts. Woody on the other hand, is weirdly incompetent, confused, and silent when we know he is very competent, intelligent, prideful and has a bit of a big mouth.

They both grew apart from each other and changed a part of themselves due to the circumstances that they had to endure. Tbh, I personally think their interactions made them more real, as it shows that their character-even if they are toys-aren't static.

I was definitely one of the people that left a comment saying I wasn't a fan of this movie. I'll own up to it. But I greatly appreciate watching your view even if I didn't like the film. It gave a few newer points to really think about. And I suppose I could agree that the movie could be viewed as a stand alone from the original three and start a new trilogy. I was really angry on how they portrayed Bonnie and stuff I know she is a little kid. But the bond they made in TS3 and how Andy expressed what it meant to him to let her keep Woody. And it felt like it was a short time between the films. It was really hard to see that neglect and stuff. Anyways it was a good watch simply to try and keep myself neutral and watch you. And appreciate your thoughts, thankyou for the entertainment.

I feel like people were too harsh with bunny she was 4-5 years old when she got the toys. I don’t rember a thing from my preschool years just vague memories of going to preschool. Playing with stuff. Family stuff. I honestly don’t remember what I played with at that age.

I’m a strong advocate for this movie. I’ve read somewhere that originally the writing team couldn’t find a story or reason for this movie and a Pixar executive told them “Toy Story 3 was the end of Andy’s story. But it wasn’t the end of Woody’s.” To me this movie emulates so much important messaging. Finding new purpose. Learning to move on. From stages of life and more. Also that the people you interact with and become close to in life come and go but the experiences you have shared and lessons you learned will always bond you together. All this and so much more. Great movie. Even I’m not sure why they are doing or what they will do in Toy Story 5 but I will remain hopeful and optimistic that it will be just as great as the first 4!

Woody being so loyal needed to understand as well his purpose, and to do so, he needed to go through all of this, the final scene with Buzz he knows it too. I'm a big advocate for this film too. There was no mistaking how the other toys, besides Woody and Buzz, were really pushed to the side in this movie. Maybe Toy Story 5 will focus ONLY on Woody and Buzz, maybe have a bit of Bo Peep, but have a bunch of completely new toys.

Toy Story 4 really split the fandom on if this was good or bad, heck one youtuber made a really long rant video too, I'm ok with this ending because throughout Woody's whole journey it was always prioritizing Andy's happiness and Bonnie's so now for once in his life he's finally letting himself make his own decisions and to have his own happiness and the important thing is that IT'S OK TO MAKE A DECISION THAT MIGHT BE SELFISH JUST DON'T DO IT A LOT. and also it's perfectly fine to like or hate anything just don't think it is good or bad because others tell you it is

I get why everyone doesn't like the fact that the group broke up, but in a way, it makes sense. As a group, they were Andy's toys. But Bonnie isn't Andy, and she's going to have a different bond with the toys. She doesn't need Woody the same way that Andy did.

This movie really shows how by kids not knowing about toys being alive, the toys can easily be emotionally hurt by them. It's been present in all the others, but this one, the toys taje a different path instead of things turning out all right in the end

There were aspects I really liked and really disliked about this movie. The two things I disliked were Buzz's weird regression (i don't understand why they dumbed him down so much. maybe for comedic effect? like trying to replicate what he was like in the first movie? but he's grown beyond that, so it wasn't even humorous, just weird and fell kinda flat), and Woody choosing to stay with Bo over staying with all his friends. i don't like the message that romantic love for a partner is superior to platonic love for friends/family. especially since Woody and Buzz's friendship is a core component to the overall series. when we think of these movies, we think of Woody and Buzz, not Woody and Bo, or even Woody and Andy. Their friendship and bond is the stabilizer and pillar of the entire multi-movie story. however since Woody also left because he had no purpose with Bonnie, and traveling with the carnival gives him the chance to help other kids and give him a new purpose, that I did like and agree with. tbh i wish Bo had been given to Bonnie along with the rest of them from the beginning, and then when Woody chose to stay behind, then she could have joined him and we could have that moment of Woody finding a new purpose and still getting to be with Bo, without the additional insinuation that romantic love trumps platonic love, since that wouldn't have been a factor in his reason to stay. Oh well. Another thing I loved was Gabby's arc/story. We had an irredeemable antagonist/villain in the last movie (Lotso), and in this one we had a redeemable antagonist. her finding and helping the lost little girl makes me cry every time. very satisfying ending for her character :) Overall, despite the aspects of the movie I didn't like, I still really enjoyed this Toy Story 4 to a point where am happy to still watch reactions to it, and I feel it was a perfectly adequate sequel and ending to the series. (except kind of not an ending if they're making another one i guess? maybe we'll follow an entirely new group of toys. i would kind of prefer that than continuing to follow this same group, since we already got an ending for them.) anyway, enjoyed your reaction and commentary!

I don't know why some people don't think this measures up to the other three. In the first three, Woody was clearly the leader, but he has lost that role. Jesse getting his sheriff star shows that Bonnie thinks of her as a leader, and Dolly is the clear toy leader of the house. Woody's leadership responsibilities have been taken on by others and he is free to live his own life, like Bo Peep.

I like the story, but it still makes me sad that Andy didn't want to give Woody away, but he de because Bonnie was gonna take care of him. In the end, he was the first toy she outgrew. It feels like he should be with Andy to come full circle. 🤠

I watched this movie in the theater with my friends and there was a bunch of lil kids around us with their parents and when the ending came me and my friends were in tears even some of the parents were sniffing and some of the kids looked at us with the “why are you crying” faces they didn’t understand..😭

toy story 4 was a surprise but a welcome one. I think people miss the point to this movie. 3 is still the ending to the original trilogy. They passed on the toys so they’d be able to have more adventures. yes this movie wasn’t exactly needed but it tells a beautiful story about toys just like all the others. In the first it’s woody learning to share the spotlight. second is woody releasing the worth of playing with andy even if it’s not forever. third is the gang coming to terms with with their owner no longer wanting to play with them and them being handed down to another child. this movie is woody learning that just because he was andy’s favorite toy it doesn’t mean that he will have the same experience with another child. he grew and decided to take fate into his own hands similar to what he wanted in toy story 2 but now it makes sense because bonnie is not woodys kid

I agree. I've heard people say that this sequel is unnecessary, but I think it's important for the toys' perspective. The original trilogy is about a kids moving on from their toys. But this movie addresses toys moving on from their kids.

When I was young, back in 2013, I wrote a *Toy Story 4* plot all by myself. In it, Woody goes on a daring rescue to save his new friend, Kody, a bullied toy that was stolen by 2 robbers and soon discovers where they had taken her to: a factory where each, every, and ALL toys from around the world had been taken to a "witch" who knew about their secret, by using a special crystal that she uses to see it and tries to make it MORE powerful by turning all of the toys into her slaves. Plus, I even had Buzz and Jessie become parents with 3 children: 2 daughters named Angela and Erika and 1 son named Andy. Plus, even had Woody have a new girlfriend/love interest with an Native American doll too! And it was all good. Like... really, REALLY good 👍 And when I showed the story to a couple friends from our church, and when one of them read my story, he was absolutely astounded of how much I written out. And in his mind (also telling me), that my story is WAY BETTER than this movie 6 years later.

I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie because it's my favorite of the series so far! Your interpretation of the movie being about parenting is interesting to me because that never occurred to me in all the times I've watched Toy Story 4. I've always viewed this movie as the period of time after you've achieved a dream and have to find a new one. It's like that moment after you graduate college and ask yourself, "what now?" I agree with you that Woody's growth in this movie is organic, and that it's natural for him to change his mind. But he doesn't really change it... He is always loyal to his kid when his kid needs him, but Bonnie doesn't need him anymore (shown by her not playing with him and not realizing when he's gone), so there's no kid for him to be loyal to. When he joins Bo Peep at the end, he transitions from student to teacher, which is a transition we all make at some point in our lives. He has mastered loyalty, compassion, and selflessness, and is now actively creating opportunities for other toys to learn these lessons as well. This really resonates with me as someone who loves mentoring. I love being able to share what I've learned with others and help them progress in their lives. It feels as if I'm them, actually accomplishing the things I advised them on. And as for Buzz, I think it makes total sense that he doesn't understand consciousness because at first he was functioning based purely off of his "programming" (Toy Story 1), and then he was basically listening to the opinions of the toys around him (Toy Story 2 & 3). This is his first experience having to make decisions completely on his own. I can't wait to see where they go with the 5th movie! I'm hoping for Andy to return to some degree!

Many use that as pity argument, but after his "factory reset" he got his memories back and acted normally after having a TV falling on him. Now if he DID receive some "brain damage" (which would be odd him being a toy), that would be a bit more believable inside the Toy Story universe,

This movie grew on me over time. Toy Story 3 is still my favorite, but I really don't hate this one, either. The first thing I will always remember about 4 is the very first thought I had about it: Just how INSANELY good it looks. And, your talk at the end actually kind of got to me. I was best friends with someone for a whole lot of years. We were really close. But a couple of years ago I realized that not everything was the same anymore. Unfortunately we went our separate ways, and not in the best possible way, either. I doubt we'll ever see each other again but I still think about her all the time. And I miss all the fun times we had together.

I completely agree with you when it comes down to the fact that change is part of everybody's existence or at least it should be. Woody had to understand that it wasn't his obligation to make all children happy. He made Andy's childhood special. So he did his job. Now is the story as strong as the first three maybe maybe not. But the concept holds that everyone has their time. I've heard the series of the fifth movie and I hope that they go along with the storyline coming back around to Andy with his first child. I'm glad you saw that it makes sense for Bonnie to play with Jessie over Woody. Some people are aghast that Bonnie would ever prefer another toy because she promised Andy (an adult she doesn't know) a year prior that she would look after Woody. It's a good thing that Bonnie sees herself represented in her toys and it makes a lot of sense that not all kids have the same favorite toy in a given set.

I think the bigger issue is that we're not given a reason as to why she suddenly doesn't like Woody anymore. She loved him in 3. It would make more sense if she only stopped playing with Woody after she makes Forky, like how Andy briefly preferred Buzz over Woody because Buzz was the new toy.

@@hiccupasterisk Yes, I know. But this is a story. Bonnie is not a real kid. She is a character and her decisions are the decisions of a writer. People are expecting a consistency for these films. When there is a lack of consistency, this causes the audience to question things and that distracts from the film. It wouldn’t have been a lot of work to have Bonnie wait until 5 minutes into the film before putting Woody in the closet.

I think this was one of the deepest reactions, so, honestly, bravo. I love to see people spotting symbolism, especially meaninful symbolism, which family matters clearly are to you. I also appreciate the positivity - to find that lense, as you said, through which the film becomes great on another level, even if it's not your favourite. I think that shows your ability to see beauty in the world, and that's an amazing ability, which, by the way, kids often have, but adults lose. Keep it up!

I love the lesson of the movie. Woody clearly wasn't anything special for Bonnie, so rather than staying in a bad relationship just because it's "your job" or duty, Woody decides to live for himself.

I definitely was bitter with this movie when it came out, I HATED it that ending, but rewatching it with you and listening to your review did make me hate it less. There are moments that I love and make me laugh, others that almost make me cry, and above all, I do think this is an enjoyable movie. I still don’t like it though, still hate that they didn’t just left the story with the third one (and don’t even get me started on this winning the Oscar over Klaus, agh). Great reaction! It's ok to read all the comments and to see why other people dislike this movie. But I think it's great that you have your own opinion and you seem to understand this movie. Also, I really disagree with a comment here that it was a character assassination. Like WTH? A little bit overdramatic? I liked this movie and I also see a lot of development of Woody's character. Maybe the movie wasn't necessary but it was certainly not bad and I was glad I watched it in cinema. Toy Story 4 is a fine standalone movie, and you have some good points during this reaction that I hadn’t really thought of. When I saw this movie in cinema it just felt like Pixar was trying to emotionally manipulate me? We said goodbye to them all at the end of Toy Story 3, and it felt like they were just trying to make me say goodbye to them again, but I had already had that closure so it felt cheap. But you definitely have good points about parenthood, Woody’s journey, the values and such. I was very biased seeing this movie originally. It was nice that you stayed positive and open minded going into this and through it, helped me get a new perspective.

Honestly the inner-voice thing that Buzz does is kinda dumb, but also funny to think about. Because Buzz is wondering where his “voice” comes from, like who is the literal voice actor. It’s kinda interesting to think about, because the voice is in a sense, not completely his own because it was a recording by someone else. So the misunderstanding stems from him having a curiosity about how he was literally made. Also, I’m with you about the Benson’s being creepy. 😂 Though I do feel a little bad for them too since they can’t really talk on their own. They depend on a ventriloquist to provide it for them.

I don’t think this movie is bad, it just makes me sad in a bad way. I guess bc I watched the first three movies when I was little, I kind of feel betrayed by Bonnie’s carelessness for Woody. Although it is a realistic portrayal of live and people growing apart. And I guess I never really liked it in any kind of media, when a character chooses their love interest above their entire friend group. Always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. So true. Being loyal and acting that deep sense of commitment, it's incredible. I'm glad Woody was able to step down, allow others to take the lead and for him to let go. It's awesome to see that happen. He is needed elsewhere. Reminds me of my own walk in the faith. Been to the same church for almost 3 years and saved for less than 2. I found a group who is teaching parables, prophecies, and fulfillment in the New Testament, especially because it spells out what to do to be ready for Jesus' return. I didn't know this in church, before this group. I barely found this group in February, 5 months ago. Now I need to leave that church that led me to Jesus, and that's okay. It's like moving from elementary to deeper, mature teaching. Higher teaching and it will allow me to guide others who are ready. I am grateful for how God used those people to help me get to know Him, but now it's time for me to commit and actually keep the new covenant. See ya at the mountain! Stay blessed! ❤

Great reaction!! It made me like the movie more, haha. I think the differences between Buzz and Bo would be my biggest detractions, but overall a good movie. In the case of Buzz, I imagine that he's not really dumber; but he's sort of relaxed now. In the other movies there were big driving conflicts; an existential crisis in number 1, a rescue in number 2, and an escape in number 3. In this one, he's not as involved in the plot; he didn't really see how much Bonnie needed Forky, like Woody did. Mainly, he was trying to cope with understanding why Woody thought it was so important, and being supportive to a friend who was, in a degree, drifting away. In number 2 it did highlight his growth from the naivety of the first movie, but in number 3, it did have moments where he was somewhat oblivious. I imagine that he's more intent under pressure, and that he's a little disturbed that Woody is moving in a different direction; losing, in a sense, the leader he'd been beside since he first began the Toy Life. So he's trying to get that guidance from a different source, and turns to what he thinks-- or hopes-- has some direction to give him. Buzz had to make a hard decision too, to support his best friend choosing to go seperate ways. So I imagine his whole voice thing showed some aspect of him listening to HIMSELF. It did accidentally steer him right a few times. Also, I think they wanted to highlight the whole voice box thing, showing at first how important it is, then showing, no, it's not the voice box-- it's the inner voice that matters. Woody learned it, Gabby learned it, and Buzz learned it. As for Bo, I kind of liked how sweet and supportive she was in the first two movies, with a little quiet sense of sass. They made her "cooler" though, to make her into as much of a leader as Woody always was. I think it would have been more interesting if they gave us sweet quiet Bo Peep at the beginning scene, then showed the difference to that-- showed how she had changed and grown-- and using that to illustrate the point for Woody that even though things are changing that isn't necessarily bad. Just a few thoughts! Good job, can't wait to see what the next one is!

The main reason I didn't care for this one is that Forky is literally and figuratively, a throw away character. The story pretty much could have been the same without him. Also, if he'd not been there that time could have been spent fleshing out Gabby, which is why I just didn't have any feeling for her one way or the other. It was all just a big waste of time waiting for Woody to reunite with Bo and find a new purpose. Plus we had so little time with Bonnie's original toys. I just think it was poorly executed.

4 is my personal favorite. Aside from the massive upgrade in graphics and great new characters it also has the most important moral of any of them, that life is better when you don't have kids and live your own life 🤣. Bo Peep is a true savior.

42:39 I was trying to figure out why I actually prefer this one in some ways and that is exactly it. It felt much more relatable to me, which meant I was emotionally invested on a deeper level, but I couldn't put my finger on why that was. But your explanation here really resonated with me, I think that was a key difference between this movie and the original trilogy and also explains why so many people who love the first three movies, especially if nostalgia is involved, hate the fourth one. But some of the moments in this felt so real in a more complicated, sort of grown up way, which really spoke to me.

Honestly I think the reason people hate the 4th movie is because its well its just kinda weird, but also it started ruining the nostalgic memories the adults had for the first 2 movies, and even the Closure of the 3rd movie, Andy went to college the same time we did essentially, it was done! The whole series couldve ended with the 3rd and it wouldve been fine, but now the toys all say Bonnie when you buy them, and the 4th movie wasnt written as well as the others??? So it seems like theyre beating a dead horse lol

I really like TS4! I totally agree that Woody's character arc was well thought out. It just make sense that he would want to help other toys and other children... The moments that he was the bravest were the moments that he needed to help someone.

I love this one and the 3rd one best. I enjoy all 4 as a set though. I know people like to nitpick every single movie, not just this series. That can make movies fun to discuss if done calmly, but more often people just go off the rails. That’s when it gets annoying. One set is determined to “be right” over the others when these works are really up to us to interpret and affect us individually. I enjoyed your views and interpretations. For me, this movie is 50/50. There are some really good elemts in here that I love seeing explored. Like how a toy comes to life because a kid loves them. Even Woody leaving could have been done so well because what I think the movie is trying to say is that after years of being loyal, being there for his kid and being a leader, Woody now has to decide for himself to be happy and pass on the knowledge. Thats a great message really when you look at the franchise as a whole. But like so many movies and media these days, it just was executed the best. Mostly because of Bonnie just suddenly not liking Woody anymore despite how sad she looked thinking Andy was going to take Woody at the end of three AND Bopeep being pretty rude and cynical to Woody throughout the movie. There are good parts and I dont think its disrespect yo the franchise like so many others. It just wasnt worthy of following the third which reallly would have been a good way to end the franchise as it is.
