I've recently seen a new phrase around TikTok, "girl dinner". The term 'girl dinner' seems to be first coined by a girl on TikTok who showed her meal which consisted of an assortment of tiny food items left over in her fridge. The trend is pretty funny, but of course, some have taken it and put a completely new meaning behind the term.

I am a 64 year old woman. I grew up eating like this maybe once every couple of months. We called it "cocktail party" dinner. I raised my daughters having cocktail party dinner for a fun occasional treat. They are all in their 30s now and if I invite them over for cocktail party dinner they get giddy. 😂

German dinners look similar. At least last millennia when I was a kid. Bread, butter, cheeses, cold cuts, cucumbers, tomatoes, anything you can create an open sandwich with. Warm meal was middle of the day. Unless my grandpa made his special fried potatoes. Then we even were called out of bed for it.

I was actually talking to my husband about this last night and I mentioned to him, you know if we weren't married I would be eating a pink lady apple and a couple corn chips for dinner every night. I have struggled with disordered eating/eating disorders since I was about 15 and as I said that to him I realized that being married and making food for us both has helped me recover from that mindset and way of living monumentally. I still struggle with it sometimes, but now my mindset has shifted and my desire to provide a good meal for him when he comes home after a long day at work far outweighs my desire to just "graze" or even skip dinner with the excuse that I "wasn't hungry", when I really just didn't want to eat because of years of unhealthy thinking and habits about food. Of course, as part of our marriage, I agreed to make the meals and I want to hold up my end of the deal as a principal on my part, but he is a very understanding guy who will come home from a 10-hour workday and make dinner if I feel sick or overwhelmed, so this is not something I have ever felt forced to do, and because of that, food means something so much more to me now. We share the workload and making meals for him now makes me excited to eat with him, excited to consume good food and try new things. I think that's pretty incredible, and 17-year-old me would have never believed that was possible.

I never liked cooking and never thought I’d be a stay-at-home mom who does the cooking, but being able to cook dinner for my husband who works so hard outside the home to allow me to stay at home with our daughter is just another way I feel like I can show my love and appreciation for him. In Slavic countries this is a very common family dinner. Sourdough bread, hard cheese, pickles, then depending on the season fruit (apples, grapes, watermelon...) or in winter maybe some mayo, smoked fish... Around Hungary a very popular choice is a hard sausage. Yesterday and the day before I had Sourdough bread, hard sausage and hard aromatic cheese. My wife and my son had it as well. The sausages are often home-made from animals raised by the same person who prepared the sausage, in the hills you can get home-made cheese. Fruit from your own trees and bushes, pickles made at home, fish caught by a family member... This is about as "natural" as you can get.

On Sunday night, my husband and I occasionally partake in a "Girl's Dinner," consisting of various favorite cheeses, grapes, figs, cornichons, prosciutto, a baguette, a fine wine or champagne, etc. By no means is it a frugal dinner, actually quite the contrary, nor is is really healthy, although quite high in protein. But the funniest thing about it is that should that be the night we are enjoying this rather extravagant meal, it will also be the night that my mother-in-law phones from the other side of the country and is appalled that her son is having to eat "cheese and crackers" for dinner. No matter how old they get, mothers will never get over taking care of their baby boys. 🥰

As a straight married woman with children, my family enjoys "girl dinner" quite often. Our after church Sunday lunch is usually "girl dinner", but we call it snack lunch. If we've had a super busy day and we (being both myself and my husband) are exhausted and don't want to cook, we have snack lunch for dinner. My kids love it, my husband loves it, and I love it. I've never felt like I'm some martyr who had to give up my life because I chose to get married and have kids. I actually love my life 100% more and am so happy to do life with my best friend and have "girl dinner" with him and the children we had together. You want "girl dinner"? Then have "girl dinner!" There's nothing stopping you except you.

I'm a 30 yr old Man. I have never eaten just a Charcuterie Board/Cheese & Crackers for dinner! Yes I've done that for a Snack but not a meal. Also, WHO THE F**K HAS LEFTOVER CHIPOTLE?! I rarely eat Chipotle but when I do, I never have leftovers. Same for other times I get a Delivery/Restaurant meal. Unless it's a Domino's Pizza deal where you get 2+ Pizzas for affordable price, then it's 1 Pizza for Dinner that night & the other for tomorrow. The only other exception being if I go to White Castle and get a Crave Case then Half is 1 Meal the other Half is another Meal. Oftentimes I make a big batch of something that lasts 3-4 days and simply reheat/eat a portion of it each day for my meals. Could be a big batch of Chili or Tuna Salad or Chicken Salad or Refried Beans or Corned Beef Potatoes & Cabbage Soup or Onion Soup or Beef Stew or Pasta Salad or some other Pasta dish or something else.

So my husband also eats like this. He loves a home-cooked meal, but never expects me to cook, and neither of us a culinarily inclined. Last night he had meat and cheese on jalapeño saltines with some cherries. 😂 Sometimes I like to cook, sometimes he brings home a prepared meal from the store. It’s not about gender, we both work and we do what we can to feed ourselves 🤷🏻‍♀️

A little insight from the old world here. In Austria/Bavaria Girl dinner is basically a normal "Brettljausn", which is a lunch/dinner on a wooden plate serving cold meats, sausages & cheese along some bread. The majority of our households have this kind of dinner at least 2-3 times a week. I grew up on girl dinner basically. Girl dinner is in a way a central European thing. (Since the medival times)

My sister would definitely endorse that meal. It's what she has always preferred to eat. Cheese is mostly fat, and dietary fat - especially animal fat - is frowned upon these days. But that's probably due to an overdose of fake science. Animal fat is actually good for you, and so are naturally fermented pickles. Butter is good for you too. Guys would get behind this if you add meat. In fact, some people would call it a sandwich or hamburger once you add meat.

My husband and I have been married for almost 12 years and then together almost 14 years he kind of had an idea about what I used to call compartmentalized dinner like you eat it and pieces and I introduced him to like what everybody’s now calling “girl dinner” after we got married and he loves it. When that’s our dinner. He loves that but it’s usually a night that he hasn’t been working heavily in the sun and we have four kids. I have to take that into consideration, so does he. And it’s actually not that far removed from like history to eat like a heavy meal in the middle of the day and then eat a lighter meal before bed. People are trying too hard to read too much into this sometimes your body just needs a little something not anything heavy

Grazing in my family was food between meals. My mom had four boys between the ages of 18-10 in the house at once, and three girls (but they ate so little it was nothing in comparison). So during her once a week shopping, she usually got 20 pounds of sliced turkey, salami, and chicken (60lbs). She also got a couple of pounds of roast beef for my dad's lunches. She bought about half as much cheese, and jars of dill pickles. This was during the 80's thankfully. I don't even want to think what it would cost to feed three 6ft boys going through puberty at once nowadays. Let alone doing it for over a decade with four of them.

CSB: My Mom's family are Mennonite and we have a 4th meal called Faspa. It is a community meal meant for fellowship at around 4pm in the afternoon. It is straight up grazing food. Dinner rolls, PB and J, cold cuts, Bothwell cheese, coffee and milk. I always reckoned that since Mennonites were farm people the women came up with Faspa so when the men came in from the day's work they would be distracted by the Faspa and not pick at the proper dinner food that they were getting ready. Kind of like opening a book for your cat to sit on while you read your actual book. I loved Faspa.

I lived on a cattle ranch during summer until high school and we had a four meal day. A light breakfast (usually toast with peanut butter and jam), lunch (eggs, bacon, pancakes etc), dinner (cheese, crackers, salami), and finally supper (what most would call dinner, a heavier meal with meat and veggies). This helped us through the 100 degrees plus days of summer.

"Girl meals" is done at least 3 days a week at my house not just stopping with dinner. My mother in law has had a lot of her intestine removed as well as a portion of her stomach so nutrition is something I try to pack I to every meal and since she can't eat as much they tend to be smaller meals throughout the day. I've struggled with weight my entire life it getting worse when I was bed bound for a year. We now do 5 meals a day per the nutritionist recommendations. I've lost 120 lbs in 2 years, my son has slimmed up something he struggles with due to medication and my daughter has noticed a change in her energy levels. Decent breakfast between 6 to get us started, mid morning snack around 10 consisting of random fruit pick of the week, lunch at noon which is usually not much more than the snack, dinner at 5 and a small snack around 8 so it has time to settle before dinner. Tunafish, apples and crackers are a fast and healthy light meal which can be turned into tuna melts for those more hungry eaters

I must be trans because when I was single I ate "girl dinners" often. Now that I'm married again, my wife who loves to cook and cooking is one of her "love languages" only does so on her days off. I will help her when she lets me. On all the other days it's up to me to feed myself and I still have a "girl dinner" if I don't feel like fixing anything more extensive. I clean up after myself after fixing dinner because I don't want her to feel like she has to after she gets home from a long day at work. We also share the housework, neither of us are particularly messy people and clean as we go so it's not a big deal where either of us spends hours cleaning. If I do something that bothers her when it comes to cleaning she lets me know and I change my behavior and vice versa because we respect and love each other. In my first marriage I did almost all the cooking and cleaning or it wouldn't get done and our house looked good. I don't get this at all, especially that woman that was bitching about having 7 hours of extra work a week. Stand up to your husband lady and tell him you need him to do things around the house instead of getting secretly mad about it. Communicate.

Brett, could you please elaborate more on what you know of "...iced lattes first thing in the morning messing with our hormones..."? This is the first I've specifically heard of that, sounds like an interesting conversation. Love your show! 💗

My mom is a “girl dinner girl,” and refused to cook or even learn how to. She “didn’t have enough time.” As a result, my brother and I grew up with malnutrition. My father also didn’t know how to cook, and since there’s no societal pressure on men to learn, he didn’t need to. Maybe not knowing how to cook (an important life skill) is not something to brag about on social media and maybe you shouldn’t have kids if you’re not willing to put in that work.

Still watching the video, but as someone who can and does cook, a fruit, cheese, bread and peanut butter dinner can be a decently nutritious meal.

Which is why everyone should learn to cook and about real nutrition .. my 6 year old can cook and my son will also learn .. it’s not rocket science to be able to cook eggs and beef

Yeah…. And while learning about nutrition completely ignore the food pyramid that was put out by the USDA. It’s a lie considering it was created by the food MANUFACTURERS of the USA.

Oh my. She might be single or her husband is out for the night. My favorite girl dinner is yogurt. Every night doesn’t have to be a full on meal- that’s why Americans are so fat.

It always frustrates me when women brag about not knowing how to good. Congratulations, you lack a very basic skill thats useful in everyday life. It's like being proud you don't know how to brush your teeth or wipe your ass

One unexpected gain my husband and i experienced after quit my job and became a SAHM was that we BOTH got to finally have hobbies. When we were both working full time without kids neither of us got to enjoy our previous hobbies because we were so drained all the time.

Females: Post and read about “Girl Dinner” and love it. Also, Females to Males: “Girl?!? How *dare* you! Call us Wimin!” 😅

That woman talking about how boys are raised vs how girls are raised is completely bonkers. 9:57 My sister and I were raised exactly the same. We both were expected to keep our rooms and the house tidy. We both helped with laundry and dishes. We both did spring cleaning. Our parents liked having a home that looked like it belonged on the cover of a magazine. There was no untidiness allowed. Now that we're adults, my sister is the one with a messy house, and I'm the relatively tidy one. (Admittedly less strict about it than my parents were, but I still like things neat and organized.) It doesn't come down to "roles" or "expectations". Her husband certainly doesn't expect her to keep things tidy; he's even messier than she is. It comes down to personality. Some people are slobs. Some people are more meticulous. Some people have OCD. Some people are bad at organization and utilizing spaces. Yes, some of it has to do with learned habits when you're young, but there's way more to it than that.
