Rechenka (River), comprised of Russian folk tales, is about an orphan who is being given away in marriage to the unloved. She comes to the river, border between the living and the dead, to ask blessings from her deceased mother. Especially poignant as Diana was abused and nearly killed by her birth mother, thrown out on the street in winter with a broken arm at 4yrs old, speechless when taken to an orphanage, learned to sing, and was adopted by the lady you see in the wings during this performance. After suffering recurring nightmares about her abusive mother returning, her adoptive (real) mother moved far away. This show, "You Are Super," is for abused / underprivileged children. Igor Krutoy, famous Russian composer and one of the judges, has mentored Diana and bought an apartment in Moscow for her 'forever family." Amazing what love and music can do for a child.

All pretty correct apart from the starting to sign reason you stated. Whilst in the orphanage and even after Irina Ponik and her daughter took her home as part of the family, Diana was barely speaking and stuttering due to the abuse suffered at the hands of her birth mother. Irina was advised to take her to singing lessons as an aid to regaining her speech. The rest is history and this is why Diana started her vocal! career so young.

This is a Russian folk song called “The orphan bride” which makes her performance that much more heartbreaking. She is talking to the river. It’s her wedding day and she feels that the river flows but it does’t cradle. The river answers, “ My child, you are sitting and are not smiling”. The part where she starts beaming, she tells how their yard is full of horses and the house is full of guests and then the joyful exclamation turns to a moan when she sings that she has no mother and no father to give her blessing. And she starts howling like a wounded wolf. It breaks my heart every single of the 200 times I have watched this legendary performance💔💔

Good Morning from Poland !!! About the song "Rechenka": This is an old ritual song about an orphan bride. The girl has no parents. The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. The song is far more than the sum of its words, it generally requires either someone to explain it, or someone who has an understanding of Russian folk lore to fully grasp it. Basically, it's a young bride-to-be coming to the mystical river dividing the living and the dead so that she can commune with her dead parents to get their blessing. The whoops and wails, or incantations, at the beginning are to gain access to the nether realm.The ghostly voice is her Mother answering. Once she's got the blessing she marches to the end of the pier to shout with joy to her friends back on the other side that all is well, she has the blessing, hence the change in mood to happiness. She's then placed back into the boat by the spirits and repeats her various incantations for the return journey, as the spirit pushes her back to the land of the living. At least that's my interpretation as to what's going on. As for Diana? Well, what can you say, other than this truly was a world-class, bravura performance, and incidentally I'm convinced all but won her the contest outright then and there in the semi-final, so exceptional was it. Though, of course, everything she sung before and after certainly aided the final decision.

In the beginning I hated Diana. Turns out she is so unique I had to get used to her. Now I'm such a big fan and I think she is the best current young singer destined to be great. I mean I also love Angelina Jordan, but Diana Akudinova has such an unique style to her. I hope this will replace the current popular music style and I don't care what language she sings in. I hope that The Confident Singer watched this full version of Diana's presentation along with the judges' comments (3'40'') - here we can see Diana's attitude and behavior while listening to the judges' comments and advices addressed to her. What a deep respect Diana shows them! The famous composer Igor Krutoy warns her against the temptations of a future stage career, while another judge says that although the presentation of "Реченька" (Rechenka) is in 99% result of the work done, but it's obvious for everyone that Diana is bestowed. As Alexiey wrote here, she is experiencing the song she sings. Diana Is that song. I also hope The Confident Singer has access to a portable device that can translate Russian subtitles - camera and app is needed. Finally, the story presented here by Diana doesn't have a happy ending in the conventional sense of this phrase - she allowed to be taken by the Реченька, because in this world She had no one to return to. I suggest watching "Вьюга" (Blizzard) about loneliness in difficult circumstances and in a similar vein "Dernière danse" in French - it's a world hit from a few years ago, so there should be no problems with translation. Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova. Diana actually turned 17 on 31st May 2020, but was 14 at the time of this performance. The show she is on here is Ты супер! (translated as "You are Super") and it is for children who have found themselves without parental care at some point in life. According to the programme, Diana was abused by her biological mother until around the age of 3 years, and ended up in an orphanage. While there, a massage nurse named Irina Ponik - the lady with dark hair and glasses seen briefly in the video - took care of her, and a strong bond was formed, to the extent that a year afterward Diana was adopted by Irina, and Irina has been her "Mom" ever since. It seems that for the first year or so Diana would hardly speak, and singing lessons were recommended, and the rest is history. Diana is now with a loving family, and her music training goes from strength to strength. Since winning the show, she has received much support from Igor Krutoy - the bald guy on the judges panel - who is one of Russia's foremost composers and song writers. Krutoy also arranges and writes songs for Dimash, accompanying him on piano. Kevin Neal I am sure other Russian people comment they will share with you this ancient Russian song. I believe if I remember the story right a young lady who is to be married has no parents to bless her marriage so she goes to the nearby river, rivers are held spiritual to ancient Russians. She goes to the river to ask the spirits to bless her. I probably messed this up as I said as Russian people comment I am sure they will share the story with you. I have heard many people refer to Diana as shaman like in many of her performances and I must agree. I love her performances because her stage presence is amazing.

Just a little detail to add, she is truly looking for a blessing for the wedding, but not from the spirits, but rather the river she came to is not an ordinary one as it is unnaturally still, and thus probably its the river which separates world of the living from the world of the dead. So she is asking for a blessing from her dead parents, as she want them to support her. And another meaning of the still river is death itself, or fear of death. In some regions wedding consisted of several parts with one of them being "death" of her as a girl and following part was kinda "resurrection" or beginning of the new life as a wife this time. So she might as well be just afraid of wedding itself. Something like this. But the song is very old and has many variations in different regions with probably slightly different meanings in details.

@@SergeyKokovin after several months and lots of watching this video I still find some new details to understand in the choreography. Just recently realized that when she changes "role" in the song it's always "indicated" by taking a few steps into a new position on stage.. first the girl singing to the river, few quick steps, then her dead mother's words to the girl, then the walk glazing in the cam, and the girl's words to her girlfriends comes. And when singing "коней-то полон двор" her body movements kinda imitate riding a horse :D (at least I feel, maybe this was not intentional).

@@t4m4s78 another quite an interesting detail for me was that not only she is enforcing the story she is singing about with the imitating movements (like river, waves, baby, and so on), but she also adds small details which can also be interpreted as meaningful if you know the story. For example when she imitates singing bird (with hands high up, like she looks right to the sky and high notes) and owl (when she intentionally cracks her voice), it might be just a show off of how in control of her voice she is, but in some regions of Russia the same song had an additional part, where mother or father (their souls) are actually coming to bless her from the other side in the form of birds.

Wanna hear something odd... i'm 50+ years old ... all my life, i've listened to music without ever hearing the words. My brain just doesn't process them... i just hear the voice as another instrument. Was not a decision i made ... just something i discovered about myself... but there's a huge bonus, my brain rarely identifies what language a song is being sung in. Just doesn't matter to me ... lol Love your reaction ... you're looking as beautiful and vibrant as ever.

I know a few people who have the same problem as you. My Mom is like that a lot of the time, so we constantly find lyrics for her to follow along with while listening to music. I'm sure the condition has a medical term but it's nothing too serious, I hope. There are SOME songs that Mom can listen to that she can hear the words while listening, but not many. I just hope you can understand spoken words from a television, so in severe weather you can understand when the meteorologist is telling you to get out! That would really suck although I am sure that there are people who cannot understand what is coming out of television speakers even without music going.

@@jamescurfman3284 I don't consider it a problem ... i can obviously hear the words if i actually care enough to try and listen for them... it's just not my natural state of being when listening to music. Music has soul all it's own. It tells it's own story without understanding the words.

@@jamescurfman3284 Interesting point of view! This was with me when I listened to English songs. Then we moved to another, English speaking country, I started to understand the language and surprised to hear the words which are making sense! The same was with another language. Music was just a fone, a background for me until one of my friends took her time and while the song was on a radio explained to me every word of the old Hebrew poetry [ the poetry in Hebrew usually written in the ancient language]. then, I started listening to the words of every song they played on the radio [than, in office, we had just radio] and figured out that the language is so, so beautiful. So, one day I was listening to the old Morrocian Jews folk songs, and here came Diana Ankudinova. It just came like a thunderbolt upon me: how this little girl knows all those tribal techniques of the little, unknown/or barely known people of the end of the 19th century from Africa?! She does it, as it is her own! Amazing! She just shocked me!

Of course, since I have only ever been inside the U.S., I could not have known that. You must have travelled some, or maybe your family has had some experience in other places. Hi Janet. Things, in order; first of all: thank you very much for this extremely funny video, it's fantastic, I don't know how many times I've seen it already, I never get tired of watching you, the moment when the video ends and you hit your head or your hand on the table and the camera moves, priceless, not even Buster Keaton could have done it better. Secondly, I declare myself an unconditional fan of this wonderful girl, I think I've seen all her videos and the analysis and reactions that have been made about her (in Spanish and English), and yours are among the three best (I don't say the best because you can think I'm flattering you, and I'm above all honest). The third thing, if the criteria had been energy, you would have broken the scale before reaching the middle of the song, this girl is incredible. One of the things that amazes me the most about this artist (this is a higher scale than the singer) is her intelligence. In the blog that she has on her website there is an entry of the musician who did the arrangement of the songs Wicked Game and Blizzard. In it he exposed that sometimes he "scolded" Diana in rehearsals, because she did not transmit and asked her to do it. When Diana puts her feeling into the interpretation of a song, it changes completely, it becomes something else. Anyway, that is something very demanding and Diana is able to "dose" her emotions and apparently in rehearsals she only puts in the technical part, not the emotional part, which is very powerful. I was saying that she is very intelligent because in the two programs of "You are super", the two videos you have analyzed, she gave her all, she gave her all and that is something that we can all perceive, and she managed to make a name for herself and be known, although still in small circles, at an international level. Personally I love the songs Blizzard, Picky Horses and My country is beautiful. The song rechenka or little river, is a Russian folk song, even before Christianity, that an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about the fact that my mother, father and brothers were killed by the enemies, there is no one to take care of her. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the basis of the content of each of the variants are the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for a family to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers, and even to her parents, with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. Thank you very much for reacting and analysing this song cover by Diana. One of my favourite songs of hers. Would really love it if you could react to a very brave song cover by Diana Ankudinova. She recently posted her cover of Vladimir Vysotsky's song "Кони привередливые" (translated as Fastidious or Finicky or Capricious Horses). At the time Vladimir wrote this song in the early 70s he was suffering from alcoholism and this song is his personal commentary on how his addiction was cutting his life short. He died about 9 years later at the age of 42. Against the advice of her music teachers, she not only performed her cover, but successfully made it her own in my humble opinion.
