what it’s like to work as a bookseller - 9 hour shift at a small town bookstore ($17 hour)
Hello! This week I wanted to share a bit about my work life as a bookseller (because I am working again after taking a hiatus to work on some other projects) and am excited to be there for a long while. Today I’ll walk you through a work day, and show you what I do and what I enjoy. I work at an independent bookstore in a small town of about 500 residents in the city limits. Here we hand curate our selection, and it’s a very routine and often quiet job (except during the summer and holiday’s, then is can get quite busy!” I hope you enjoy it ❤️
You can always skip over book reviews if you wish! I know they are not for everyone.

My best friend spends $100-$200/month on new books. She has done this for 50 years now. She once said to me that she feels guilty for spending so much money on "just" books. I told her that she is supporting authors and that is an admirable thing to do. Also, another great is, when she is done reading these books, she gives them to me. I, in turn, donate them to our local library. Everyone wins. Sending loving and peace-filled thoughts to everyone.

@@Natalie_SH I am open to reading anything that I come across which sounds interesting. There are genres I come back to more often than others, genres I typically prefer, but I am not going to say no to reading an interesting sounding book just due to how the author and publisher choose to classify it. Having an open mindset when reading and selecting my books have allowed me to come across so many great offers and stories, a lot of the time hidden gems, that I would have missed because the classification is not usually my type of thing.

BTW there's a fair in Cabo Rojo at the "plaza" in town that I think you might enjoy. It's a miniature rendition of the "Fiestas Patronales" of Cabo Rojo. It's a magical and beautiful exhibit that will nourish your inner child. Suerte!!!❤😊🐓🦜🐸🌴

What a fun glimpse inside your workday. To those of us that adore all things book related, it is a wonderland! Your store is much larger than it appears from the outside. Love the little tags on the books that give the buyer a quick overview of the story. As a reader I appreciate that extra effort. I admire bookstore owners that hang in there in a digital world to offer something you can hold in your hands, get a crick in your neck as you walk down every aisle reading the titles, and lovingly purchase. Once home, to place on a shelf or on a side table ready to open the new adventure. The owners are truly blessed to have such a special employee working there! 💕 📚🙌🏻

Hello Paola! On Sunday my husband and I took a leisurely drive to your quaint hometown from Seattle, and had dinner at the Old Schoolhouse which was quite yummy. We also stopped into your bookstore just before it closed and although you were not there, we got to see your beautiful art and book! Well done! It's all just as beautiful in person as we see online. We also met a kind author who is new to work at the bookstore and she was so welcoming and told us a bit about the exciting journey she is on in the world of writing for an upcoming movie. How wonderful it is to live and work in a place that supports local artists such as yourself. We shall return again, and until then I pray many blessings for you and hope to meet you in person next time.

Your bookstore is very fortunate to have you. You provide free advertising for the store. Your passion for physical books revives and creates a desire for all of us to step back from online books and pick up an actual book. And finally our love and enjoyment of your job is inspiring for others to seek employment through their passions. Great video.

Years ago, my dream job was to be a photo journalist 5:11 for National Geographic, but my career changed for housewife and mother. When my kids were school age, I went back to college for a Library Technology Degree. I also do photography and have since 1983. Now I am 63 and retired, but continue with my photography. I see your job and it’s location as ideal in so many ways. My in-laws live in Graham, WA, a bit of a jaunt from your bookstore, and it’s my hope to purchase a book there during our travels sometime in the next 1-2 years. I always look forward to your content that has anything to do with books. I am also hoping you write another book or create a picture book of your water colors. I am an avid collector of children’s books, fairy and forest animal books and Steinbeck’s books. I find the search for the most vintage copies to be rewarding and fulfilling. Thank you for the time, talent and effort required to provide a rare window into the various aspects of your life.

I am retired from the American Library Association. I was able to get so many ARCs that publishers would send for our book reviewers for the Booklist publication. When they were finished with their reviews the books would wind up in the staff lounge for us to grab. I loved combing through those piles of books and brought home so many treasures!

It is so lovely that you can take your beautiful black dog with you to your work, as he so loves being with you, and you with him I am sure. I find peace in watching your channel. I LOVE books, and have read a lot in the past few years, and I then pass them onto a charity shop, for others to enjoy. I live a quiet life too, here in West Devon, England, with my beautiful black rescue greyhound Madge - who can be quite mad! We can go days without seeing another human being, but that does not bother me. I love reading my books, and get totally lost in them. I write poetry myself, all about my experiences in nature that is all around me. My friend, who is a flutist, wrote some music to go with one of my poems, and it sounds just beautiful! I am 66 years young, and am only just finding my true self. Love and hugs to you, from Jilly & Madge xxx

I visited Trails End Bookstore back in mid December. I remember on the Saturday I was leaving I went right when they opened and met Paola who was working. She commented on the beautiful collection of Sherlock Holmes stories they sell that I was purchasing. Then she told me a story of her experience downhill skiing as we both got into chatting about how we don’t like skiing which is odd coming from two Washingtonians! I highly recommend going to this bookstore, it is the best I’ve ever been to and they have a wonderful selection for all ages and have all genres. I will be visiting again in December the same weekend I was last year. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing Paola again, I am a huge fan! With ❤️ from Seattle

Bookstores are magical places! Before I retired, there was a tiny old, used bookstore close to where I worked, so my lunch break often found me haunting the narrow shadowy aisles, craning my neck and squinting hard to make out authors and titles looking for something with my name on it to read on breaks or take home and treasure! It is now many years since I have been able to go back and escape into that marvellous place, but your vlog the autumn morning brought back warm memories. Thank you! I am so very glad you had such a nice trip home. Sending love hugs from the Canadian prairies to you and yours. ❤️🐾❤️🇨🇦❤️🐾❤️

I am retired now, but a former librarian in a special library in Targu Mures, Transylvania, where I had the chanse to have the original Blackwell book in my hands. So this video, maybe more than others spoke to me in a special way. Thanks. And no day is boring among books. Sending my love.

As an avid reader and lover of books, especially old leather covered ones, I so appreciate you taking us along to your awesome job. How nice that you are able to bring your sweet dog with you too, a bonus for sure. I find cleaning and organizing very calming and satisfying too. Are you able to read when it’s not busy and the tidying up is done?

Today was such a hard day for me at work. So stressful and unpleasant. Your video changed my night. By seeing videos to spend time before bed, I had crossed by yours, talking about what a love the most: books! Your bookshop is really amazing and comfy. I wish I lived closer to step by and buy some books from local authors. What a nice idea! Seeing your routine made me feel how much we need to slow our work-life pace and have a more healthy life balance. ❤

I volunteer at our local library bookstore and yes, even at the age of 74, I say my ABCs under my breath! I didn't have a good day at the store today (unusual), but I'm feeling much better and revived after your wonderful video!

Your fellow gets to go to work, too! This was charming...a solace. Per a society/world in ever more crisis - with, no doubt, so much more to come - I could hardly not resort to tears when you were describing all of these books (no more of the 'dark' for me either). Thank you, for this wondrous visit to such a different realm.

Your videos about being a bookseller make me want to investigate working at a bookstore or library again - I used to want to work at the library SO badly. I read nonfiction almost exclusively these days (history, cultural, and environmental books, mostly), but I love hearing about the books you pick up, especially the whimsical illustrated works! Younger me would've been head over heels for all of them, I'm sure 💚

Loved this video! As an avid reader myself, I always enjoy finding out what others are reading and when I see a bookshelf on a YT video I will pause and copy down the titles/authors and look the books up to see if there is something I'd enjoy reading. I think I'm going to be spending some extra time on this post so I can check the many many books you've shown us in this video. Thank you! You made my day!

I just watched your last two videos back to back. I too am a sensitive person, and thanks to you, you taught me that. I am so incredibly grateful for you, your channel, and for teaching me of my sensitivity. Of all the videos you have done, the last two really resonated with me... changing who I am... I need to work on that, I'm learning through watching your channel. I actually got tears in my eyes when you were speaking in this video about it not being super exciting. I couldn't explain it at first. Something about being highly sensitive, I believe. Sometimes emotions well up and tears come, and you just can't explain it. But, I believe in this case, it's because I could relate to so much in these two videos. Not exciting, boring putting books away, monotonous work... it's all work that I have enjoyed my whole working life. I used to have people say.. oh, that's boring doing the same thing every day! Not to me. I found things I enjoyed within the monotony... seeing how fast I could count papers, staple sets together, build boxes, pile reams of paper, bind books, learn "personalities " of machines. What made the same exact model machine produce or have problems that another did or did not. It also allowed me a lot of time to simply think, work things out in my mind. Please don't change your channel. Though I don't know you personally, I love you and what you do. I am so incredibly grateful. You've opened my eyes to who I am. I've come to realize that both of my parents were/are highly sensitive. (Mom passed away) I believe my new dog is also highly sensitive. It's a rainy day in Northern CA today. My husband is working, and I have a few hours to decompress. I used part of that time to watch your two videos, and my dog Sierra snuggled her nose into my neck during the moments she wasn't watching Iger.😊❤ I also found it interesting that you used to enjoy horror, and that has changed for you. Though I never enjoyed horror, I used to be able to handle watching or hearing of more violent and sad things than I am able to now. I too experienced some trauma. My grandmother unexpectedly died in front of me. The sounds, the visual, getting a fax machine noise every time I kept trying to dial 911, and suffering an injury trying to save her life, that left me with YEARS of anxiety. Then my my mom passed away five years later. She was my best friend. Now i understand more than ever why we were such best friends, having so much in common, being hsp's.

I love your job! i don't think I could ever tire of staying at a bookstore. I am happy that both my daughters inherited our love for books that both my husband and I share. You have such a good dog. He's looking dashing in his bandana. I have a black labrador who we call, Buddy. He's very energetic and steals the neighbour's chickens and ducks now and again. We pay our neighbour of course, but everything is all good, it's their nature after all. I hope we can see more of your small town soon. From the glimpses of your previous videos, I can see that it's one charming town. Thanks for sharing your days to us. I always love watching your videos. 🙂
