Correction to my statement at the end of this video: the book I mentioned is made up of mostly NEW words, many that are coined by the dictionary itself, not old words that are no longer used (I have had a cold and not been at my best this week, my brain is fried lol I apologize, I explained that completely wrong haha).
The winter snows have come. I recently saw a book about ‘wintering’ and the art of coming home to oneself in December, reacquainting yourself with your emotions and goals for the new year. It is a delicate time, an opportunity to cultivate a cozy nest and enjoy a quiet time. I was visiting my parents little cabin recently and discovered this wonderful book, and had to get my own copy.

Wow, I was journaling about "anemoia" this morning without even realizing it! Thank you for helping me put it into words, as well as sharing that C.S. Lewis quote. I was reflecting on the deep longing I have in my heart, and made the connection of my longings to the garden of Eden. To be arm-in-arm with the Lord, walking through luscious greenery and flowers, feeling the sun and the radiance of God on my face, and enjoying the peace of a world without sin, darkness, and death. We were not made for this world, and maybe, just maybe, that longing deep inside for that nostalgic wonderland that we've never experienced is a longing for the days of Eden that our oldest ancestors experienced, and the glorious days to come? Anyways, I thought it wasn't a coincidence that I had these musings this morning, and that you shared similar ones today too. Allie , I was looking for a comment like yours. We know that God will fulfill all of our longings. Knowing Him, we can experience some of that now but we also have the hope of His promise of eternity. It's nice to to learn about other beliefs and traditions but always remember as Jesus said, " I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life,no one comes to the Father except by Me". It’s funny because in French, we have a sentence (not a word) for that nostalgic feeling caused by a smell (or anything else). We call it « La madeleine de Proust » (Proust’s madeleine) because, Marcel Proust in his book called « La recherche du temps perdu » taste a madeleine cake and all his childhood memories are brought back because of the smell and the taste of the cake. It’s now a common saying in French, to refers as Madeleine de Proust an element that bring back memories and nostalgia. I wish you and your family great holidays.

Actually I thought about that as well although I am not French. In English too there’s a word for it… Proustian moment! Actually I’ve had Proustian moments so often even before I came to know there was a word for it and the story behind it! Coincidentally I love Madelines too 😊 I’d love to read À la recherche du temps perdu sometime! In the time I’ve spent knowing and reading about it, I could’ve read a lot of it by now 😂 but well… Btw, there’s a holiday/festival in India called Deepavali or Diwali around the end of November the festival of lights and it’s something cottage fairy and many of us would love! 🕯️

Both books have incredible watercolors. -The Secret Lives of Color, by Kassia St. Clair. It gives the history of almost any color you can imagine. Even the pages are color-coded on the edges. -The Land of Stone Flowers: A Fairy Guide to the Mythical Human Being, by Sveta Dorosheva. Told from a fairy's point of view. Impressive art! anemoia....this is my everyday. I feel like I was born at the wrong time most days. I agree with you about what you learned about the English language. Since I speak Italian and French fluently, I often feel like I can't find a good equivalent word in English for a certain feeling or nuance. In any case, loved the video. I love the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows! I was going to recommend it to you, actually. I love the idea of a word that describes what you feel when you hear a distant train whistle, that inarticulate longing. Some find it a lonely sound, but I agree with you--it's more about a yearning to travel and explore, about wanderlust. Trains as symbols generally carry an almost mythical dimension and a lot of deep emotion--think of songs like "500 Miles" by Peter, Paul and Mary, or "Chilly Winds" by John Stewart and the Kingston Trio. (Such a beautiful song, kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIWqn4yXmL1jetk.) My favorite word from the DOOS is "sonder"--"the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own--populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness-an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you'll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk." I think C.S. Lewis would have loved that. He was a Sagittarian too, you know, as am I. Happy birthday! It's hard when your birthday competes with Christmas, but I still love being born in December. I miss snowy winters so much! I used to live in a country where it gets to -25 degrees celsius in winter, and of course never loved it. I dearly miss these snowy cold winters now, because where I live in England we don't get much snow at all, and temperatures below 0 C at night seem scary. Haha that's nothing in comparison though! :) I remember when it got down to -25C we didn't have to go to primary school, and when it got below -27 C we could skip high school. Those were good times :)

The older I get, the more disillusioned I have become with formal religion and the objectionable behavior/attitudes of too many church-goers who do not seem improved by their faith. While we do still listen to the old Christmas carols and put up a pretty tree, my husband and I have turned our focus to Solstice instead of Christmas. We use the day as an opportunity to connect with nature. We fill our bird feeders and put out extra goodies for the birds. I bake a “sunshine” cake (either lemon poppyseed or Mexican Wedding Cake) and make a couple of hearty soups - one of which is always French Onion, which is a nod to the year I tripped over my own feet and spilled half a LeCrueset pot full of onion soup all over the kitchen floor! Then we go for a long winter hike to watch the sun go down. We use the time in the forest to evaluate ourselves, examine priorities, and assess our relationships - with the goal of forgiveness, restoration where needed, and a determination to find light in every person going forward. When we return home we light candles everywhere, use no electric lights at all, and enjoy our cozy bowls of soup with quiet, reflective conversation. As an obsessed gardener, I resonate deeply with this quiet practice of observing the turns of season and embracing the sun’s tangible warmth and light in our every day lives. And I love that our solstice traditions have nothing to do with spending money or filling our lives with more stuff.

Wintering art reminds me of the snow geese that come to visit in Upstate New York. They are so beautiful. On a winter day, when they are in flight and the sun is shining, their white feathers facing the sun causes them to look like diamonds in the sky. It is such a wonderous sight. I just love your dog and how happy he is to play in the snow with a frozen stick lol. Hubby and I have always loved using words that most don't even know exist let alone use and they always look so confused. It's really sad to see the extent of the dumbing down that has been going on in our schools in America. One can only hope that all of the hateful teaching will be put to a stop and that they will actually teach kids interesting and useful information. what a joyful discovery ❤️ I sit in the heat of the Australian summer watching this, the sensation of warmth on my skin and the hot wind, the cicadas chorus is ever present. I am enjoying this complete juxtaposition of the landscapes on my screen. A summer Christmas is all I have ever known so it is familiar and I love my home country. I'm a winter solstice gal and always have been. The 21st of December is always my "new year"...setting intentions as the light slowly returns. Anemoia, wow there is a word for what I feel. I've been describing it at a "Deja Vu that doesn't belong to me." I've always felt it was simply inherited feelings from my birth mother. I love your dog...that tail waggin' and enthusiasm, brings pure joy! BTW...I want that book of new words. I missed the name of it...what is the title?

Yes, a anemoia, I have experienced it. I used to experience it a lot as a child. I used to think I was born in the wrong time. I no longer feel that way. But the longing or yearning for a different time and place does exist.

*what a stunning video this week* ! those drone shots are epic! That word, - nostalgia over a place you have never been before / or have not experienced? .. I guess that's how i felt about your videos and why they hit home immediately. it's like I had always been at your little cottage. I guess growing up watching the landscapes of prince Edward island, in anne of green gables, and little house on the prairie, little women, etc etc so many of my childhood memories are from movies that took place in areas that look like this side of Washington. mountains and lakes and these types of homes, have always lived in my heart. in a way they feel more like home in my heart, than my own home does. It is amazing what can live in the heart.

I usually celebrate Hanukkah alone. It is usually 8 lovely days of solitude. I hand-roll my own candles for the menorah out of beeswax, and doing so allows me to indulge in contemplation about gratitude and faith. This year, however, my boyfriend was visiting me for two weeks. He is not religious whatsoever - nor Jewish or familiar with its customs - but when he found out he would be here during the entirety of Hanukkah, he was so excited. He bought me 8 presents for each day, a "Hanukkah" candle with a personalized message on its label, and a handwritten card about how happy he is to spend the holiday with me (which, of course, made me cry). I work until very late at night, and I would come home to the menorah all clean and set up, complete with the candles he rolled himself as I taught him. It was such a wonderful, thoughtful way to spend a holiday that I had observed on my own for so long. I am so immensely grateful for him.

What a beautiful video. It’s absolutely a treat every week. I don’t know if ever heard of St. Lucia? It’s celebrated on the 13th of December. Especially in Scandinavia they celebrate it. Saffron buns , singing and a young girl dressed as St. Lucia with a crown of greenery and candles. The thought was that she brought the light back into the world. Merry Christmas 🎄 ❤️
