There is the tempo on one side and the musical ear on the other. There are those who will follow the tempo at 100% and those who will follow the musical ear rather at 100%. However, the nintendo music was under strict tempo by "convenience" (and rigor) of sampling. This "100%" does not work every time, and it shows in the harmonics of these music. So, it would rather be a mix of 90% tempo and 10% musical ear. This phenomenon is found in Megaman II but also in Final Fantasy IV. If you want to improve your performances on this kind of music ... make a distinction between what is the "strict" tempo notes and the notes being of the margin of interpretation of the musician (> variation temporality indecibly).

By far the videogame most amazing songs i ever heard, sounded so genuine and same time with a high level of complexity in arragements, maybe that's why these songs keep stucks in my head along the years. The kids who lived that era know what i'm taking about and today's kids are impossible don't like these masterpiece cuz sound too timeless yet.
