What maddens me is that the story was always grounded in political truths: a ruler cannot be strong if succession is not assured, which is why Dany was targeted by assassins and Joffrey's illegitimacy mattered. Suddenly a Targaeryan with a legitimate claim on the throne can be banished on a promise not to come back and contest things and a king can be appointed who can never produce a dynasty - guaranteeing the civil war will start again when Bran dies. Nice one 👍
@Ready-ForTheEnd2 жыл бұрын
Yep...
@intpleb42062 жыл бұрын
Dude, same and well said. It's pointless and stupid to have a Stark on one throne and a Stark on the other. The point? Especially when one can't breed wtf... The best way to fix that would be to have the actual classic hero (Jon Snow) with the legitimate claim to the throne defeat the Night King, saving all mankind, and having the stealth assassin (Arya Stark) or the trusted hand (Tyrion) take out the mad queen in one of their clever fashions. This would leave Jon open to taking the reigns alongside his cousin Sansa, uniting the entire continent of wildings, northerners, and southern Targaryen loyalists. If the eunuch army got their panties in a twist, then Melisandre could have used Jon's kings blood to awaken one of the stone dragons on Dragonstone, easily wiping out the foreign threat. Uniting the Stark and Targaryen houses is what will bring stability and peace to the entire realm. Literally everyone but the "writers" knew this, but I guess subverting expectations gave them a bigger boner than writing a cohesive and satisfying story that dozens of people dedicated over a decade of their lives to create.
@theManishMuse2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been reading up a lot on the Wars of the Roses… which GoT is kinda based on (dynastic wars due to crisis in succession). Problem for a TV show is its theme doesn’t conclude… the wheel never breaks! And the writers had no way of imagining a way out of that conundrum. Same with George M. should Dany rule? Why? Should jon? Why? The only conclusion to war is legacy. Which is why Return of the King ending was so boring.
@intpleb42062 жыл бұрын
@@theManishMuse 100% legacy. It made no sense for 2 Starks to rule the north and south, and the south to have an impotent king that couldn't produce heirs. That leads to warfare and why a Queen bearing sons was always so important. Daughters weren't ideal, but they could reign if all else failed and preserve peace. Jon and Dany would have been able to unite both the north and south with their bloodlines, but Jon and Sansa/Arya would have achieved the same result if Dany was destined to die. So many viable and interesting options but they went with Bran the Boring... -.-
@dontcare70862 жыл бұрын

The troops/city had already surrendered, Cersei was killed by coincidence with no way of Dany knowing about it, was it just an actual kill count she was after? I've had breakups that hurt less than this shows final season

@breathe3146 but the subversion of expectations didn't fit the characters. Cersi is a cold blooded sociopath who is not afraid of death. So to show her dying in fear and tear s - even with Jamie at her side - goes against the character we know. Danae by contrast is supposed to be her opposite. Yes OK she has streaks of her fathers nature in her. But even when she invades westeros in season 7, we see her compassion as she first touches the ground. To go from that to a complete dictator seems totally out of character

The story of the rise and fall of GoT is like a Greek tragedy. It was at one point the most fucking incredible show to have existed, that had the biggest fanbase in the world who were obsessed with endless theories about how it would end. Wherever you went, GoT would come up in conversation as casually as football. It was a phenomenon, lightning in a bottle. It was arguably the biggest pop culture touchstone of the 2010`s. And then season 8 happened. In just a handful of episodes they managed to completely crumble the towering monolith they had built. GoT was now a joke, and will forever be remembered as thus. It was so bad it made us question if the show was ever really good from the get go. And if was all because of the staggering hubris of the show's creators and the laziness of the original author. Even if it had stuck the landing in a bumpy way, the show still would have been remembered as an amazing achievement. But they didn't so much land, as more like crash to earth and torch the entire runway. Thus it will remain as a cautionary tale to all those who want to know how not to finish a series.

The sad thing is that they didn’t run out of source material. They stopped adapting it after season 4. Book 4 and five never got to screen and they are both thick fuckers with plenty of stuff going on. I will always divide GOT between GOT Seasons 1-4, seasons 5-6, and seasons 7-8. 1-4 were hands down among the greatest television in history. 5-6 were indicative of a slow decline in writing quality, but still had its share of excellent moments(Hardhome, Hold the door, etc.) 7-8 were when all creativity and intelligent writing was completely abandoned. Characters gained plot armor, something 1-4 never would’ve dared allow, previously smart characters were dumbed completely down for plot convenience, plot holes the size of the Grand Canyon began showing, and the abrupt killing off of the Night King actually ended the show for me(like, I legit didn’t watch the final 3 episodes of the show, since the Night King’s death killed the last shred of emotional investment I had in the show). It’s amazing just how much my admiration for the previous seasons of the show has been completely replaced by disgust and contempt for the laziness of the later seasons quality. It actually puts the Simpsons to shame in that regard.
@johnowen93493 жыл бұрын
I saw the Night King's death coming from a million miles away. Arya's development screamed Deus Ex. When she pulled that drop knife trick in the sparring session with Heavy-B I remember asking myself "Who is she gonna use that on? Valyrian steel... Night King." I think a lot of the unhappiness with the ultimate story 'twists' come from people ignoring the blatant foreshadowing on so many characters. Jon stayed true to form, Dany stayed on her inevitable path to becoming the very thing she claimed she was fighting against, etc. etc.
@princessshei91713 жыл бұрын
@@johnowen9349 Foreshadowing isn't character development. Also, that knife drop hint and Bran giving the Dagger to Arya in the first place was all made up by D&D. Jon's resurrection had everything to do with him killing the Night King, their fight was built up from the first season (most definitely in the books). You can't just take one instance of foreshadowing and say that it's enough to be believable. Once the writers lost the books, they took it in their own direction. GRRM himself stated that the writers overtook him, which he did not expect. They had Arya kill the Night King at the last minute and ignored everything they created with George in previous seasons to "subvert expectations". They said it themselves, they were really only invested for The Red Wedding (one of the best subversions EVER which... they TRIED with that last season.
@muflon83423 жыл бұрын
It's mostly because season 1 to season 4 ep 9 adapted the books fairly closely with minor (for the book readers often annoying and maybe cheaper to the plot), not very influential changes - see Talisa/Jeyne Westerling). In the final episode of season 4, there were 2 crucial changes that started the doom of the show - no Tysha reveal and no Lady Stoneheart. Season 5 continued in the same manor and 80% of the books 4&5 did not get adapted. Some characters "followed" their book arcs in broad strokes (Dany, Jon, Arya, Theon, Cersei were kind of similiar though not the same at all, but you could say they were doing what they were supposed to in general), some only very vaguely (for example Tyrion made it to Illyrio and then to Dany's court and met Jorah on the way there, but everything about the journey was different including Tyrion himself, he was severely whitewashed in the, show and Brienne was indeed looking for Sansa with Pod in the books but that's where anything even remotly similiar ends - she travels with different characters, runs into Randyll Tarly and finally gets captured by the Brotherhood in the Riverlands and kidnaps Jaime - yeah, not even close to the show), some were drastically different (Sansa, Jaime, Asha/Yara, Euron) and didn't do even anything similiar to what they were supposed to be doing in the books. Then there were characters and plots that didn't even make it to the show but were crucial (all of Dorne, Victarion, Aegon and Jon Connington). Still, season 5 and 6 were somewhat watchable, though far from the greatness of the previous 4. Season 7 and 8 hit the rock bottom. It's practically unwatchable due to the bad writing. Nothing makes sense. It's not even entertaining bad. It's just bad. Which is a shame given the fantastic cast, music and effects.

Remember when he said Tyrion wasn’t in it, as a crappy joke from D&D. Ugh, explain how the actual fuck Tyrion wasn’t in the book Sam? He’s the son of Tywin Lannister. His kidnapping in the north is pretty much what put the conflict in full swing since it led to Ned getting speared in the leg and bed ridden. He served as hand of the king in defense during the battle of black water. As far as everyone in Westeros knows HE IS THE ONE THAT KILLED JOFFREY!!! oh also, HE FUCKING KILLED TYWIN LANNISTER!!! He was also the hand for Daenerys, you know, the invading force that destroyed King’s landing. You would honestly have to go out of your way to not add Tyrion into the book. He played dozens of well documented, publicly known, crucial roles in the wars for the throne that their attempt to be funny, instead infuriated me.

I love how in season 7 Daenerys specifically said that her father was an evil man and she knew what he did wasn't right, and now they try to spin it that she did all this because it's her idea of what 'right' is. So not only did she go crazy overnight, her entire personality and moral compass did a 180 overnight too. I also love how Jon lost all agency this season. He got his destiny stolen by Arya and he got his choices stolen by Tyrion and Greyworm. Instead of coming to the decision on his own, and voluntarily going north.

@@liammcnulty1987 lol all of those had reasons (wether it was bad writing or not) behind why it turned out that way though. not cuz of the sake of girlpower. yara’s brother got his dick cut off and basically lost his mind so he IS reasonably incompetent (he always has been ever since he met ramsay), so it only made sense for yara to lead. besides wasnt she always gonna rule it anyway? her father preferred her over theon. the defense over arya killing the night king was allegedly cuz of her training w the faceless men and the prophecy the red woman told her (not saying i agree but like i said, not girl power either). sansa’s arc was hella reasonable. itd be considered an even more bad writing if they kept her that same vulnerable and naive girl she was from season 1, so how is her development and maturing arc girlpower? but ye just my opinion.

Notice how SO MANY movie franchises and dramatic multi-season series have been turned upside-down and destroyed in recent years, largely by diversity dogma and Marxist identity politics. Have the content-makers suddenly become incompetent? or lost their creative passion? or been politicized so their writing turns to sludge. I'd say it's the politicization that's done this. The brilliance of 19th Century Russian writing turned to Stalinist sludge a few decades later, and other examples come to mind: social(ist) realism in British writing mid-20th Century, etc.

I have a bunch of fond memories watching the show and it had a big impact on what I expect from a well written story. But knowing that everything in the show is leading up to this.... I just can't bring myself to even consider re watching it and I don't feel much desire interacting with the rest of the associated media or discussions about it either. It's definitely weird though, how seemingly an entire slice of my life has effectively been deleted. A real shame.
