The issue is not really the hand that makes the kill, is the vomit inducing timing. Voldemort is the last boss, he has to escape several times and win several times too. This is very interesting: and absolutely spot on. I worked on this episode in Belfast, filming about 3 weeks of the 50+ days of night shoots in a freezing quarry. I worked in the physical SFX dept, so we did the fires, smoke, flaming swords, etc. I'll tell you why they only used the Trebuchet's once: because they didn't actually work that well during filming! At one point, it flung its load directly up whilst the extras were running into shot, and the flaming balls (very real) came very close to hitting someone. So, they had to cut around them, as they were established in the footage by this stage. My favourite meory of this was sitting back of set as the horsemen were all being lined up for their various passing shots, huddled around an Artem smoke machine, when I was suddenly surrounded by an entire legion of White Walkers in full make up, as they waited to be positioned into the next scene. I didn't hear them come up behind me because of the wind and storms we were filming in, and I leapt off the floor in shock! Anyway, I had a lot of fun filming this (some scenes, like the flaming pike pits, were filmed inside a studio - that was HOT!), and I thought it'd be amazing. But the way the White King was killed off so...so...well, easily; it just ruined it for me.

Yeah. I'm a lady too and it has seemed to me for a while that they're making this show center on the females and neutering the males. So unbalanced, and doesn't feel at all authentic. I don't like being pandered to. Plus, after watching this last episode with my husband and teenage son we all ended up looking at each other and saying, well what in the hell are they going to be able to do after this? Seems like the rest of the season is going to be pretty anticlimactic indeed.

I was laughing with my friends at how the white walkers finally cross the wall and all die at the first place they attack. They murdered every single character arc: Brianne became a whiny little girl Aria forgot her entire list and became Captain Marvel with stealth powers just long enough to air-drop and kill the Night King Tyrion became an idiot who couldn't strategize his way out of a wet paper bag Varris became a cowardly little bumbler who Tyrion betrays for no reason whatsoever Jon Snow became 100% irrelevant to everything in the series Night King and his white walkers became an 8 year long con pulled on the audience Jamie forgot everything he learned and all this personal growth and sided with Cersi again anyway Danie completely forgot she wanted Cersi dead and decided to snap and kill random peasant families instead, just so Jon Snow could kill her The Hound became an immortal god with enough endurance to shrug off attacks from the Undead Super Powered Mountain Bran became king for no reason in the universe and provided no help at all to anyone in season 8. Sansa becomes queen of the north; there was no reason for her to be in most of season 8 at all And finally Cersi watched her city burn and decided she was tired of acting.

For years, I couldn't quite figure out WHY the Night King's death bothered me. I mean, the quick stab-shatter-whitewalkergobyebye demise was VERY unsatisfying....but it wasn't THAT. There was something else that I just couldn't quite put my finger on about the Night King's death that bothered me. It was only recently that I finally figured it out: WE NEVER SAW HIM FIGHT!.....NOT! FUCKING! ONCE!!! Throughout the entire series, we saw his army fight wildly to kill every person it could. Then when he finally got to his target, there was no fight. No back and forth. No clinking of swords as he fought a valiant foe. All we got was Theon clumsily charging at him and the Night King taking half a step to the side, and feeding him his own weapon. They built him up into such a powerful force, that was incredibly OP, and theeeeennnn....YOINK! stab! The end (of iceman). No fight. It was as dissatisfying as ending a fantasy story with "And then he/she woke up. The end."

It's funny when some posters object to anyone using common sense and logic in their criticism, since the whole series is based largely on elements of fantasy - dragons, white walkers etc. But while we're all willing to suspend reality to a degree in order enjoy this type of show, there has to remain some level of logic and sensibility. The story has established that the same rules of historic warfare apply in GOT, they have just added fantastical elements. It shouldn't be, by any means, controversial to make any of the critiques I have made. The show even hyped the defensive capacity of Winterfell, in season 2 by Theon Greyjoy himself. And its not like there weren't a good number of defensive tacticians in Winterfell. From characters who planned defenses, to characters who fought defensively, it's theoretically stunning to see (within the story) the defensive tactics implemented, and the defensive tactics not implemented.The true fault goes to whoever wrote and planned out the episode. It was either a display of spectacle in spite of reason, or it is simply ignorance. Glad you found the post entertaining.

Force My Team To Finish They put thought into this episode you say? How do you kill a wight according to Jon? Fire and Dragon glass, I assume Valaryian steel too. Dramatic irony is the idea that we the audience know something that the characters in the show do not, an example We know Jon’s parents but Danny did not. We knew Melisandre would come, but the Dothraki did not. The Dothraki were equipped with there regular steel curved blades. These do not kill wights. Which means all the commanders in the meeting room knew how wights can be killed and what wouldn’t kill them nonetheless they put the Dothraki on the front lines with no dragon glass or fire and made them charge first. If Melisandre didn’t turn up all of the Dothraki would have died and not killed a single white. But yea, the writers are real smart for doing that.

George R. R. Martin set out to write a fantasy story without all the clichés and tropes typical of the genre. No plot armor for important characters, no convenient last second rescues, no evil villain that had no other motivation than being evil etc. And when the show runs out of book material, they start introducing every damn trope Martin hates! The greatest part of the episode was seeing Sansa Stark save her people by hogging the only dragon glass dagger in the crypt while hiding as children were slaughtered. Her rise to queen for her bravery was well deserved.

Too be honest, Sansa is the character who has upside down in development. She showed her potential to be a manipulator in Season 4 by lying of Littlefinger for killing her aunt only in Season 5 she becomes Ramsay's toy and weak again. Then, in Season 6, she becomes the voice of the reason for Jon to take over the North from Boltons and even lying to him to call Littlefinger with the Vale armies and in Season 7, they tried to make her care to the North remains only later being Littlefinger's victim again by baiting Arya with the letter that she sent from King's Landing a long time ago and out of nowhere, she outsmarts him. And she tried to be badaas in last Season by shutting down Dany about "What will you do to the North?" Only later just be there, whining, complaining, and Boom! She's the Queen of The North. As much as I don't like Dany, but at least Dany has a lot of moments of struggling and how she develops as person while Sansa looks like a cheater.

The White Walkers should have won, keep the wild battle in, but make the people lose. Have the remaining characters flee on boats or dragons and go look for shelter. Then there could be a plot about Cersei having to deal with White Walkers. It would be interesting to see how she would react to an army of walkers.

There was never any beating the Night King in a stand up fight, wasn't happening. It was assassination or Night King wins end of humanity. The purpose of the entire arc was building up Jon into a leader, revealing his parentage, and uniting the main characters for the endgame.

Vipre60000 I disagree. This was simply poor story telling, and the Snoke references are completely accurate. This was worse than TLJ for me, as there was more time investment in this character than Snoke. They had 8 years to think about how to kill the King, and he died without a battle. This episode invalidated all of the buildup, converging storylines, and invincible aura the king had until now. This made him look like a joke. Consider this. Two powerful enemies, the giant and the king, were killed off in the same way. By being held too closely to an enemy that otherwise shouldn’t have been harmed. It was uninspiring, felt like a cop out, and was definitely disappointing.

He went two on one on dragon back, face to flame with Dany, against Jon he used an underling mob to block, and smoked Theon without breaking a cold sweat. What you wanted was a duel and he had ZERO reason to allow that, and enough troops to prevent it. A sneak attack was the only way he was ever going down in that situation and even that attack was nearly a failure. Want uninspiring, what he should've done was let the undead overwhelm the defenses and kill every one except Bran, because the defenders were never winning that battle, then just walk inside unopposed.

Zack The Night King is not stupid enough to just “leisurely stroll” through killing people that wielded weapons capable of defeating him. He was never going 1v1 against Jon in hand to hand combat, since he knew Jon had a weapon capable of killing him. He waited until he had overpowered the enemy, before making his entrance. He pinned Jon using his dragon, he thought he had the checkmate. The ONE thing the Night King didn’t plan for was Arya, because he didn’t even know she existed, she was no one.

I think the characters who got the worst treatment in the last season (in terms of completely undoing their entire character arcs) were Jon, Dany, and Jamie. Jon is being built up to be a great leader and then devolves into a spineless baffoon muttering, "She's muh queen" for an entire season. Dany goes from being an idealistic young woman with a claim to the throne who has been the moral compass of an entire movement to a maniac seemingly overnight. Jamie has spent the entire show going from completely unlikable sister f*cker to one of the more noble and good characters, then they have him completely revert back to his former self and go die with his sister when it was PERFECTLY set up for him to go down in a blaze of glory as both Kingslayer and Queenslayer, killing Cersei. The story had practically written itself and somehow they undid three of the most important character arcs in the series. Not to mention Tyrion completely lost his swagger and clever lines in the last couple seasons of the show. It absolutely sucks how they ruined this show. It went from being a show you recommended to everyone to a show you don't recommend to anyone.

Except he’s not, and never was the supreme antagonist. That was always Cersei. Every “really bad” antagonist has had a similar fate. Joffrey being killed by mysterious poison. loviatar9 she’s been built up from the beginning is the main villain. The show is ultimately about the iron throne, not the living against the dead. Cersi has a character too. Throughout all these seasons I never hated or even disliked the night king. He doesn’t speak or seem to care about anything so he can’t be as bad as cersi, Ramsay or Joffrey. I don’t care that he wants to kill all of the living and destroy the world. He is completely unfeeling and mute, so I don’t hate him like I hate the human villains.

Yea I already started disliking the show after last season. You could already see then that they had no idea how to treat the characters. I mean, Arya didn't even actually train. She was stabbed in the gut and tossed in a gutter only to barely eek out a win and for that she was offered training and declined lol. Yet suddenly in the next season she is capable of killing an entire keep full of enemies. So cringy. It sucks too because she was my favorite of the Starks. She went from a level headed honorable person, surviving despite the harsh world she was thrown into only to become an arrogant, unlikeable Mary Sue that is suddenly infallible.

The worst part for me was that they were fighting outside in the first place. They use the survivors from outside to man the walls and they only have enough to make it one man deep. The wights climb up and get inside almost immediately. I'm just a total war general, but the obvious plan to me is set up the unsullied and trebuchets behind the ditch/barricade to draw the dead in. Fall back once the ditch is penetrated and use the dragons to ignite it and cut the army into two pieces. Clean that up and defend the ditch again. Have the northerners hold the walls and secure the inevitable retreat inside. Meanwhile have the dothraki do hit and runs on the edges of the enemy army. They are light unarmoured cavalry so no headlong charges and no stopping. Also, use their famed fucking horse archers to target the giants/white walkers. Also, where the fuck was the anti giant defense. The battle of the bastards ended with one giant breaching winterfell. They know the undead army has giants. Honestly, i know tension etc needs to be paramount for a story like this, but these basic errors in military use are just unforgivable.

Lady Mormont charges the giant with an axe and stabs the giant with a spear. Zombies punch their way out of stone crypts but can't manage a wooden door. Ice Dragon breathes blue fire and destroys an exterior castle wall, Jon hides behind an interior wall and a rock and the blue fire is ineffective. The chef continues to prepare the shit-smothered food with the same dedication and skill as with the previous dishes and appetizers, apparently oblivious to how offensive the material is now to the customers. The customers are wide-eyed looking at each other with confusion, filled with shock, horror, rage, and disappointment to realize that one of their greatest experiences was forever ruined by this obvious blatant act of betrayal, and even more shocked that this chef is still doing it with the same seriousness as presented before. Then as the smoldering pile of "what used to be good but is now covered in shit" monstrosity is served to each customer, the chef removes their hat and uniform, folds it neatly and places it on top of the grill, lights it on fire in front of everyone and happily skips away leaving the restaurant.

They should have lost the battle of Winterfel barely escaping, but with heavy losses for the Walker army (few dead white walkers and lots of bodies lost to fire). The next two episodes should have followed a truly apocalyptic ravaging of the north of Westeros and a huge evacuation effort to the south. The final battle should have happened in kings landing. The moment the night king was killed, everything should have decended into a scramble for the throne with all the shocking deaths, betrayals and tragedy that people have come to exspect. That would have been cool

The night king would have lost more then he gained due to the amount lost to dragon fire from which they can’t be recovered. As for the subverting expectations there is plenty of that which can be done in the final hour or so when the scramble for the throne happens. It would allow the Iron throne plot to actualy add to the intensity and stakes of the end of the apocalypse rather then deflate them as it does now with too much time given to it. It would be the final opportunity reintroduce the political drama and to make use of the politician characters.

just before Cersei orders her guards to start cutting down other characters, both sides panick and start slaughtering each other across the city, the cleganes turn on each other, meanwhile Varys and Tyrion enact there own plan which knowing to never trust his sister again, they had prepared before the battle. It almost falls apart due to tensions between Danerys and John over the throne and its lawful owner but is saved by Jamie who ends Cersei with a sword through the back.

She didn't scream until the final second. And she did that on purpose - she expected him to hear her and disarm her. But, her "dancing instructor" from season 1 taught her to make him think you're going to go left when you're really going to go right. Plus, the music was pretty fucking intense out there, vs being silent in the library.

Pros: - visuals (those that I could actually see), Cons: - I can hardly see shit. - they have no clue what walls are for. - Melisande arrives from the north? Wasn't there an army of the dead or something like that up there? - Dothraki who supposedly hate witches and fear them have no problem with a witch putting a spell on their weapons? Not a single one of them is wary? - Light cavalry using short weapons charging down the enemy is the definition of "I-have-no-clue-how-cavalry-works". - Charging the enemy you cannot even see is an idiocy on its own. - Artillery placed in front of infantry seems like an intended joke. It's not like they have a castle behind their backs with massive walls and towers upon which they could have place those artillery pieces. - plot-armour runs absolutely rampant. One moment you see a character obviously about to die, the scene changes and later on they are perfectly right. That's like the "action movie" equivalent of a jump-scare. A cheap shot. - Daenerys patiently waits until zombies overrun Drogon, because plot. - Jorah Mormont teleports to Danny just in time for his heroic last stand, because plot-powered teleportation is one of the main themes of this season. - Bran is virtually useless. His character arc amounts to absolutely nothing. He could be removed from the show and literally nothing would change expect maybe "Wheelchair that mounts the world" would not be a meme. - Arya makes the most of the plot-powered teleportation theme. - Night Knight and the White Walkers that have been built up literally since the first moments of this show are nothing but an inconvenience in the end. They achieved next to nothing and we learned nothing about them. All it took to remove them was a single stab with a knife. Dragonglass deletes them while dragonfire does not harm them at all. I have no clue what's going on. All I know is they are brushed aside like a speed-bump they are and that's the Long Night done. - Jon can't be relevant in his own story, because he is too busy being useless. It's like the moment Daenerys was introduced, she gradually siphoned Jon's entire personality out of him, leaving the Lord Commander/King in the North a shell of his former self, a whimpering useless tool too scared to speak up, let alone make ANY decision himself. - what a grand idea, sealing away all the helpless people in a crypt full of dead people when a guy who can raise dead people comes to kill you and raise all the dead people. Perhaps that was supposed to be a jab. Also I thought wights can't break through wooden obstacles (Sandor carrying a wight in a wooden crate?), but they can easily punch through stone tombs. Fuck you, plot.
