@@TheCrochetArchitect I would like to see you work a chart designed for overlay in its original format and then in inset, so that I can see exactly what changes need to be made to the chart. I haven’t actually made any mosaic crochet yet, but understand both concepts and have saved several videos with the intent of making something soon. I have a habit of believing I am capable of doing anything, then refusing to give up until I have managed it. It often involves a fair amount of frogging because I cannot tolerate any known mistakes in the work!

Thank you, Zaza! Mosaic Crochet really isn't that hard. You use only one color across each row, so you never have to change colors. I'd suggest watching some of my other Mosaic Crochet videos to learn this technique. Videos #21, 23 and 25 will probably be the most useful for you. Don't forget to turn on the subtitles so my English can be translated into Portuguese for you! Happy Mosaic Crocheting to you! Obrigado, Zaza! What are the benefits of inset? I dont see any. It is not as pretty, uses more yarn, and I dont think would be appropriate if there were more than a couple triples in a row. That would leave long chains in the back. What is the technique that shows a pattern on reverse as well?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 8 ай бұрын
Hi Leslie. Great questions! I think the only benefit of inset mosaic crochet is not having ends/tails at the beginning and end of every row, like you have in overlay mosaic. I agree that inset isn't as pretty as overlay. I don't think you have to leave the chains on the back, though. You can work over them if you'd like, which would make the project reversible. There are several mosaic techniques that are reversible. One of my favorites is the Spike SC Mosaic Crochet technique. You can watch me demonstrate that technique here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f5_baISgmZd6qtk. I have several other mosaic crochet videos, as well. If you'd like to watch any of those videos and see what you might like best, check out my other mosaic crochet videos in a playlist here: kzbin.info/aero/PLvrXmMW8WECMkWvZj85aGmtdWVpp3nRrO. My personal favorite technique (on most days) is Overlay Mosaic Crochet using my COM technique and Anchored DC stitch. But I know it's not for everyone! I don't like all the tails/ends and I don't want the extra work of doing a double border! Happy crocheting to you!

You're very welcome, Janet! I'm glad that this video is helpful for you! The "top" I'm wearing in this video is actually a poncho. I designed it over 8 years ago and it was published in the April 2014 issue of Crochet World magazine. If you don't own this magazine, you can purchase a digital copy from Annie's here: www.anniescatalog.com/detail.html?code=AM01217 or you can do a search for a copy of this magazine issue online. You can see the photo of the poncho on my Ravelry pattern page here: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/flower-box-poncho. It can be made with or without the flowers on the front. Enjoy!

Hi. I am in the process of converting a pattern I bought of a blanket in overlay technique to insert as I find the result somewhat messy. The resulting pattern is not so clear/neat. Are the B rows exactly the same as the A rows? Does this mean that all my diamonds will be very elongated? Do I have to rewrite / rethink the pattern design? And approx how much more yarn percentage wise would I need to obtain the same pattern? Sounds complicated. Maybe better buy a new pattern 🤨😡😤.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 7 ай бұрын
When you say the pattern is "messy", what do you mean? Is it all the ends that you don't like? If so, simply work the pattern with my COM technique instead to eliminate the ends. It only uses a tiny bit more yarn and you don't need to work a double border. You can learn my COM technique for Overlay Mosaic Crochet in video #25.

Great video..could you just do reverse double crochet with the opposite color and work right to left? I don’t know if that makes sense…my brain is having a hard time trying to figure that out. I don’t want to convert to inset mosaic crochet and make my blanket larger.

Very clear video! However, the Inset Mosaic crochet pattern you show in video has solid and open circles to indicate where dc/tr go, but the Inset mosaic crochet pattern I am thinking to convert to Overlay mosaic crochet pattern only shows the colors/design on graph chart but does not indicate where dc/tr should go (it does include written instructions) which I am accustomed to seeing in prior overlay patterns. How do I know where to put X's? Hope this question makes sense? TIA!
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the dc/tr should go in the square on the top row of 3 rows with the same color in a column (3 squares vertically with the same color). I hope that makes sense. If you study the charts in the video (around the 6:15 time), you'll probably figure it out just fine. Remember that you won't be working chain spaces with Overlay Mosaic Crochet. You'll just work dc (or Anchored dc) and sc in the back loop. You can also use my COM technique to eliminate the ends on Overlay Mosaic Crochet. It's my video #25 that can be viewed here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJjHd5-hlsummtE. Happy crocheting to you!

Is it possible/easy to convert a filet crochet pattern to an overlay crochet pattern?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 4 ай бұрын
I think you could probably convert a filet crochet pattern to overlay mosaic crochet. You could work the solid filet squares as the drop down dc stitches in the light color and the open filet squares as just sc peeking out between the light dc surrounding it with 2 mosaic crochet rows (one dark and one light) for each row in the filet crochet chart/pattern. OR you could work 4 mosaic crochet rows (1 dark, 1 light, 1 dark and 1 light) for each row in the filet crochet chart/pattern (with the 2nd row of the dark color as drop down dc to give more of a substantial open space from the filet crochet chart/pattern). This sounds like a fascinating possibility that I'm going to have to explore in the coming days/weeks/months! Happy crocheting to you, Alissa!

Can you tell me how to convert overlay mosaic charts into Tunisian overlay mosaic please Susan?
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Elaine, That's a really good question! You may have to add an extra chain to the project, but I'm not sure about that. It's been too many years since I did any Tunisian Mosaic Crochet and I'm not sure where my swatches are for it (since we moved 16 months ago)! I just watched a few KZbin videos on Tunisian Mosaic Crochet (or Mosaic Tunisian Crochet) and it looks like there are a few different stitch combinations that some crocheters use for Tunisian Mosaic Crochet. But I can tell you that one line on an Overlay Mosaic Crochet chart is equal to the forward and return passes on the Tunisian Mosaic Crochet chart. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more helpful. If you find a good KZbin video that explains how to do this, I'd love to know. Happy crocheting, Susan

I am planning a piece with a picture that I have already designed on standard graph paper. Can you advise on which technique will more closely match the proportions of the design so I can crochet it without distortion? Thanks in advance.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect Жыл бұрын
Overlay Mosaic Crochet will be a closer match to regular graph paper proportions. Inset Mosaic Crochet tends to make designs quite tall because of working 2 rows consecutively of each color. I hope this helps!

Thank you for this video. Do you have a video on how to do a gauge swatch for the overlay technique? I'm doing a blanket and didn't do a swatch thinking it wasn't a garment, so I'd be ok. Well, this blanket is supposed to be 71" across and it's over 100, lol. I'm using the hook and yarn suggested. Clearly, my crochet is looser than the designer's. It is a 283 chain. I'm not sure how to do a swatch to check the gauge. Is it single crochets, double crochets? Thank you for any advice.
@TheCrochetArchitect
@TheCrochetArchitect 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I don't have a video for doing a gauge swatch. But I can tell you how to do one. Gauge swatches should be around 4" wide x 4" high. You may not want to make yours that high because if you're doing regular overlay mosaic, you'll be finishing off at the end of each row and you won't be able to reuse that yarn in your project. I think the stitch gauge is more important than the row gauge anyway. However, if you have plenty of extra yarn, making your swatch 4" high would be advisable. Did the pattern come with a gauge in it? With the 283 chains and the 71" you mentioned, the stitch gauge is pretty much 16 stitches = 4". So you'll make a swatch with 16 stitches in it. You want to use the same stitches that are used in the project. Make sure you work at least 4-5 rows in your gauge swatch. It sounds like your tension is much looser than the designer's tension, so I'd suggest using a hook 1-2 sizes smaller. Please let me know if you have any more questions. By the way, have you watched my video #25 for my COM technique (Continuous Overlay Mosaic)?
@dlk6g
@dlk6g 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your advice. There was no gauge listed, just measurements for different weight yarns. I did watch your video for COM and I plan on doing the anchored dc. I love that! Thanks for that video too!
