Strangely the link between all three is health care. We have a veteran who may have had some PTSD who got radicalized. We have an active duty soldier with Traumatic Brain Injury who felt he could not get care from his service. And we have Luigi who suffered from bad health care, and so did his mother. Are we properly taking care of our citizens health? Our veterans health? Our active duty soldiers' health? Looks like a big fat NO.

@@Jin-Ro the government does not need to know who has what guns and who doesn't in order to monitor militia activity and be able to quench it at a moments' notice utterly and completely. that information is completely irrelevant. what they need is a rough estimation of different militias, their strengths and capabilities, together with the ability to monitor their communication and be alerted aheadoftime of possible mobilization plans. And all that, and more, they do have. We can thank, for example, the patriot act of 2001, for this, which almost every single gun rights activist supported and voted for. The 2nd amendment is completely dead today in its original intention.

As a non-American, reading the comments about Luigi Mangione, I feel that the American healthcare system problems are much darker that I would be able to imagine. It is quite concerning, that people are defending an assasin (I don't think his act counts as terrorism), it shows anger at the purposely broken healthcare system so deep that it outweighs a sense of order. One of the greatest traits of the democratic societieas and their state of law is the principle that disputes are solved by courts and violence is rare and unlegitimate. Sympathy for that assasin can be a sign of a crumbling social contract, when the societal system Americans live in is loosing its legitimacy. It shows a wounded society with insecure future. And that is sad to watch.

Luigi is pretty fundamentally different from the others, though. His was a targeted attack; he said he considered using a bomb, but decided against it because he didn't want to hurt any bystanders. If not a majority, at least a significant minority of Americans actually *support* him and his actions, or at least *sympathize* with them. Not at all true with the others. Even his "manifesto" (I agree that the term is overused) was reasonable, calm, and measured. Love him or hate him, his situation is fundamentally different from the other two.
@JadusMoltriel
@JadusMoltriel Күн бұрын
Over 60% of Americans under 34 have said they "strongly support/ agree with Luigi's actions" or they "somewhat support/ agree with his actions." The percentage of support lowers with each elder age range, yet even amongst the eldest group (65+), he received anywhere from 14%-23% support, which is actually MASSIVE considering that demographic. The fact there's any large age range that polls over half in favor of him, and that each other age has significant support of him, speaks volumes of how hurt and angry the population is regarding the healthcare system. Even amongst those who say they don't support his actions, they all had majorities answering that they "had little to no sympathy for the CEO". Despite being murdered, not one single age demographic in America has expressed sympathy for him by a majority. That's honestly mind-boggling. Perhaps we are closer to a French Revolution type event than it seems.

Luigi's manifesto was really not half-assed. If you want to argue that, at least read the whole thing. Come on, Jon. Have the guts the rest of the media doesn't. I don't feel like he needed to be discussed alongside these guys. None of the people who died in the other attacks were billionaires responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. Here's the manifesto. Critique it if you want, but at least be specific: "“To the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allwed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed (e.g.: Rosenthal, Moore), decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”

While this might be considered a wild view point, I do think that insisting to not make use of the topic of Luigi Mangione as a lead-in to further discussion of healthcare does not only do a disservice to the general populace among which Luigi garnered a lot of support for his healthcare related message, but also as a consequence of such pretty much objectively creates more harm than the killing of a CEO cruelly exploiting the lives of millions of other people for profit ever could. It is understandable to not glorify acts of vigilantism, however simply sweeping an issue so dire under the rug by merely presenting it as one among many detestable acts of terrorism, is something I cannot understand at all from this show and host respected by many.

Jon is right though "I just know, finally, someone willing to stand up" it's not his job to explain what we need to us, it is the job of the people to explain what we need to each other and to those in power. Without even saying a word the situation spoke for itself or rather the people immediately recognised what we need. His manifesto may not be impressive but the voices of the people are. 99% of people have a story or words that would make you cry with how much you can relate to them and so too does that mean you have story or words in which you can relate to 99% of people to the point where they cry.

I replied this earlier on another comment, Jon is not making an argument to the masses here. He is making his argument to the elite/Ceo class of people who actually have the means to change society. He is saying, however true or not true, that Luigi and the other terrorists are normal people, that its not they who are messed up, its society. Its subtle but that is the message that comes across to me around 18:25 .

I was just thinking about that. It's not that "he wasn't sure what he believed in" (17:28), he just referenced people that made a deeper analysis of the situation than he could have done in just a few lines. In particular, Michael Moore (who made the health care documentary called "Sicko" and was cited in his manifesto) has responded to the situation (look up "A Manifesto Against For-Profit Health Insurance Companies"), and he even made the documentary free on KZbin.

US healthcare has been spinning out of control for years. My doctor refuse to give me an appt once because I had not been making yearly appts with her. Its crazy. And its became about Money more than about healing the sick. Doctors are wealthy now. They figured out how to make rules so patients who have insurance pay them every year even when they aren't ill. Its like blackmail. What about their Oath? Do no harm? You're acting like we know for sure he did it, which right now is heavily suspect. Innocent until proven guilty. Also consider- The official story is that he shot the CEO, went to the park, dropped his backpack full of Monopoly money for no reason, transferred all the incriminating evidence to a similar but different backpack except a different gun for some reason, wandered around NYC at night for a laugh, changed into a slightly different yet similar jacket, grew a unibrow, lost a couple of inches in height, changed skin colour, randomly flirted with someone long enough to reveal their new yet slightly different face, drove to Pennsylvania for no reason, then walked around for no reason for a week with a signed confession in his pocket until a random McDonald's worker somehow ID'd him? when he was arrested he yelled 'THIS IS AN INSULT TO THE INTELLIGENCE OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE'- Which I think we should also consider because everyone is acting like this is a done deal, in every other case a suspect is at least treated as an alleged criminal, but Luigi doesn't get the same? He may well turn out to be guilty at the end of this but right now we DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE.

I can see how John was building up to Luigi's inclusion with all that stuff about waiting to see where they each fell on the political spectrum before deciding whether to support them or not, but tbh, I'm not sure how accurate that is. Sometimes, people we disagree with can still take actions we approve of. I'm British, so my perspective may be a little skewed, but in my view, US healthcare companies are run by some of the most evil people there are. As someone who grew up with the NHS, the idea of having to pay for essential medical treatment feels like it ought to be a human rights violation, so I have no intention of sympathising with the dead CEO or his family.
@CascoreGamer
@CascoreGamer 16 сағат бұрын
@reiteration6273 You're absolutely correct in that our insurance companies are run by the most vile people. While I can understand the through line of waiting to learn more before forming an opinion, Luigi was a different case in that literally the moment we all learned it happened, nearly all of us understood why he did it and sided with him. It didn't matter what his demographics were, his background, his politics, anything. It was a rare moment in the US where people from all walks alike (except the super rich and politicians) unified behind someone's actions with no further details necessary.

Jon Stewart can kiss the ring and call Luigi Mangione a terrorist, but he can't force a jury to do it. Luigi was a young man of promise, with no history of violence or crime, who suffered physical, mental, emotional anguish and snapped. His comments about our health insurance industry were accurate. If Luigi is proven to have murdered the CEO, he should pay a price, but he is no terrorist.

He is definitely a terrorist. Are you kidding me? Two complex things can be true at the same time: he has a legitimate perspective, but murdering a ceo in cold blood on the street is not how a civilized society behaves, and in his chaotic choice perpetrated terror meant to specifically terrorize leaders of companies and make them fearful. You could argue that the ceo is just as victimized by rapacious capitalism and the search for profits and money. I personally don’t have a big issue with waking up ceos to the outcomes of their issues, but that does not justify what was done even a little bit.
