The high praise you give to Season 4, Dave, is the result of hard work, careful planning and the patience required for character building. Season 4 of The Next Generation happened when fans experience a "comfort" with everyone involved on camera, and behind the camera as well. It was all an enjoyable commonality that's rare in television. Given the current changes in TV production, and changes in the general audience as well, we may never see the likes of Star Trek: TNG S4 again, (hope I'm wrong!).

Picard's "THAT IS NOT A CRIME, WORF!", might be my favorite line in the whole series. The character of Capt. Picard would be ashamed of what Star Trek, Patrick Stewart and his own character have become. Or, what they have been forced to be by talentless hack-activists.

Epic season for sure... I was a live prop in the 90s. I wanted to be on STNG but it just never happened. I was able to get into Star Trek Insurrection running around the village all night while they showered us with cork rocks and all the things we could trip on or fall in to get wet. Ran across the bridge and boom. Now I am soaking wet and covered in cork dust for the rest of the very cold night. Got to meet most of the cast. About as down to Earth as people who pretend they work in space get. I highly recommend the experience even if you don't want to act. I never wanted to act. I just liked the process of how movies were made and being a part of it was fun. Head up. Onset explosions are loud as F!@#...... Crashed a ship into a base in Babylon 5. Worfs brother was the captain. Tony Todd. Another down to Earth guy with a SERIOUS trunk full of scripts. Like full. But yea those explosions are real. Left ear was ringing when we rammed our shipt into the station. (it was a green tennis ball taped to a string) Learn to walk softly. Wood sets and a heavy step. Boom Boom Boom. CUT. Crap!!! They won't say it but I am totally at fault for that cut. YOU. COME HERE. CRAP. They will say it........ And that's how I learned to walk like a ninja in space on a star ship.........

I've been re-watching TNG and working through season 4. My appreciation for the moral and philosophical aspects of the show grows every time I watch it. The Drumhead, in particular, tackles a topic that seems even more relevant in the present day. The episode aired over 30 years ago, and we were blessed with lines such as, "villains who twirl their moustaches are easy to spot. Those who clothe themselves in good deeds are well-camouflaged." If only some of us knew now what we knew back then.

Yes! I’m surprised Dave didn’t bring this up. The middle of the season has three episodes in a row that are pretty creepy and a little disturbing at times: “Night Terrors”, “Identity Crisis”, and “The Nth Degree”. The middle one is one of Geordi’s best episodes, with a great sci-fi mystery that unfolds, and the way Barclay ends up transforming himself into a man-machine hybrid by the end of the third one always kind of creeped me out. That episode lets the actor show some good range, too.

"Schisms" was the one that bugged me most. Their creepy clicking noises are unsettling, and I personally have...issues with medical care and equipment. The Borg are some of my favorites in Star Trek, in large part because it weirdly feels like some of the most accurate hacking depicted in sci-fi. In the UK, they only showed up to Best of Both Worlds before taking a break of what seemed like an eternity (over a year at least). So season 4 was the first one that I bough VHS tapes of in an attempt to try to keep up. I didn't get them all, but the ones I did get mean I have a special fondness for those episodes. It sucked that we were so far behind. We didnt start til 1990 so we were already 3 years behind at that point and then the gap between seasons 3 and 4 added another gap so we ended up at least 4 years behind. Then I remember another hiatus for 6 months or so. The result was that I ended up going to see Generations in the cinema and missing the latest episode at home!! I remember buying the All Good Things VHS just so I would be prepared for the film and not need to wait 5 years.

I always cite "Family" as being an example of why Berman-era Trek is so superior to Nu Trek. Nu Trek has characters being too emotional and immature, it has no impact when one of those characters cries because you expect it. But when Picard cries, you are seeing an extremely stoic man reaching his breaking point, it's horrifying to realize how much it much have taken to drive him to tears. I also always felt that his brother antagonized him specifically because he knew it was the only way to get Picard to let all that emotion out,he was showing brotherly love in his own way. This season really was phenomenal. Too many good episodes to go through all of them in detail.
