The boat captain is the son of the last survivor of the Bismarck crew, his father had passed one year to the day of the videos release, the band went out and froze their butts off at the wreck site Most of Sabaton's music is about heroism, sacrifice, military history, with out taking sides, staying impartial to tell the story of these things, things that should be remembered, They have a history channel that tells the details as the story should not be separated from the music.

If I recall correctly, this was a special release for their anniversary, it was one of their long standing topic fan requests for a song, but they could never find an album to put it on where it fit thematically. Their official videos hit different, they play like movies, this video still blows me away to this day. Loved the video.

One thing that most miss is the video starts out with the Captain looking at a compass at the end the young sailor pulled out of the Ocean has a compass. The compass is real it was the Captain's father's who as noted below was the last living survivor. I believe it was actually from when he was on the Bismarck but I'm not 100% sure on that. The song and video put a great feel on the chaos of the battle. When it starts the words ask has the ship been found, the spot that is highlighted is an actual chart and plot of where the Bismarck lays at the bottom of the ocean. The build up seems to mirror the British franticall searching for the Bismarck that was trying to get to France after sustaining severe damage during the Battle of the Straight of Denmark where the HMS Hood was sunk by the Bismarck in it's only action. The Hood went down in devastating fashion with over 1,400 loss. The British had standing orders to sink the Bismarck at all cost. This video tells the story and highlights the chaos and destruction as the Bismarck was attacked relentlessly. Once again Sabaton manages to take a historical moment and create a song that truly honors the moment.

This story is of the German Battleship Bismarck, one of the more dramatic battle stories of World War II. Germany needed to do something about supply convoys to England, and they used basically all of their navy to that end in the war. The Bismarck was sent out with Prinz Eugen to rip the hell out of as many supply ships as they could, which the Royal Navy wasn't about to let happen. It's mentioned but not shown in the video the Royal Navy sent the battlecruiser HMS Hood in chase (battlecruisers were designed to be fast enough to chase cruisers before the engine technology was capable enough to get battleships to go that fast, but to do so they had to sacrifice armor) The 20 something year old Hood was about the only ship in the area fast enough to keep up with the brand new Bismarck and they started trading shots in the video. That was until a lucky hit from Bismarck hit her ammo bin and she blew up. There were 3 survivors out of a ships complement of more than 1500 (I'm shooting from memory here). The video does show a Swordfish biplane, fabric covered and all, sending a torpedo into the rear of Bismarck. That jammed the rudder and did enough engine damage to slow the ship down for the rest of the Royal Navy to gang pile Bismarck into the depths of the Atlantic. Dracinifel is a naval history KZbin channel that covers this story way better than I just did. He's well worth checking out.

Hood was actually not a true battlecruiser, and did not need to sacrifice armor to attain her speed. The way the Hood was designed she was supposed to be pretty much a Queen Elizibeth class battleship, but fast. To do this they made the ship larger and put in more boilers and engines, but they did not actually change the armor much or at all. The armor is not the reason why Hood was lost. This is a myth that continues because many people wrongly compare Hood's sinking to ships that were sunk during the First World War under totally different circumstances. Drach did a video on why he believes the Hood was lost given all of the evidence that is available and it was truly a 'one in a million' shot.

as a huge naval history nerd and Sabaton fan, I love this song. I know you're not a big video guy but for this song you can't really have one without the other. And they did a KILLER job on this video. The song is about the German battleship Bismarck, which was destroyed by the Royal Navy on it's first mission. And the video shows pretty much everything that happened in chronogical order. After breaking out of Germany, Bismarck and her escorts were intercepted between Iceland and Greenland by two Royal Navy battleships and two cruisers. Unfortunately for the Allies Bismarck managed to escape after sinking one of the British battleships (HMS Hood) with a fluke shot which blew up one of the main ammo magazines. However Bismarck was damaged in the fight and had to turn back towards France. This is the first battle that takes place in the video. When the captain looks through the binoculars towards the ship in the distance you are looking at the British battleship Prince of Wales. After that the Brits managed to track her down again, and attacked with torpedo planes from one of their aircraft carriers, but were not able to do enough damage to cripple Bismarck and she got away into a storm. She would have made it back to port but an American plane on patrol near Iceland happened to randomly spot them and reported their position to the British. This is also shown in the video. Once they knew where she was the Brits attacked once again with torpedo planes from their carrier and managed to score a critical hit on the rudder which left Bismarck unable to steer and travelling in a giant circle. This is the plane attack we see in the video, and it also shows the Bismarck circling after the attack. Once she had been crippled the Royal Navy brought in more of their battleships and crusiers and pounded Bismarck into submission, finally finishing her off with torpedoes. This is the final battle scene from the video. When Bismarck sank it capsized before going down, which they got correct in the video - details like that are what makes it so good. The British tried to save as many of the survivors as they could but they had to retreat after getting a report that there were U-Boats in the area. It would have been too dangerous to stay. That was the last time the Kreigsmarine (the German Navy) tried to fight the Royal Navy in open battle, after that they resorted to using U-Boats and raiding tactics, but there were a couple more times where British ships ambushed German ones, which pretty much always ended in victory for the British.

My favourite part of Bismark's history is that Churchill ordered pretty much every ship in the are to pursue Bismark after it sunk several British ships and Bismark was chased by over 30 ships which is quite unique and one of the largest naval chases in the history.
@rynnziolkowski46422 жыл бұрын
@@NetAndyCz it was also amazing to learn just how much firepower the British navy turned against the Bismark and it still didn't even sink on it's own the Germans scuttled it
@572Btriode2 жыл бұрын
@@rynnziolkowski4642 Is absolutely correct, the British closed to far too close a range and pounded the superstructure, they would have been more effective standing off and penetrating the decks with plunging shot. Except for the rudder jamming torpedo, which not only hit one rudder but bent it into the prop which caused an impossible jam, the normal battleship torpedo protection of hull bulges worked properly for the other weapons that hit it. I'm a little surprised the original poster in the otherwise concise and accurate discourse, didn't properly identify the aircraft noted, the spotter was a PBY - Catalina and the carrier biplanes the usual Fairey Swordfish, an aircraft that was obsolete in 1939 but outlived it's replacements. Being fabric over a metal frame it could take a great deal of hits with little effect and fell between the ranges of German gun direction for secondary batteries and AA armaments; too fast for the former and too slow for the latter. The Swordfish sank more tonnage of Axis shipping than any other aircraft.

Bismarck was Nazi Germanys navy (kriegsmarine) flagship, commissioned by Hitler in 1939 and ultimately sunk by the British in 1941. Bismarck was constructed at Blohm&Voss Shipyards in Hamburg. Originally the plan for Him (Bismarck was always male not female as traditionally is used) was to set sail with heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gnesienau and they were to raid the North Atlantic convoys supplying the allies in Britain and Russia. Scharnhorst was sunk and Genesienau was heavily damaged prior to Bismarck setting sail. Churchill was bent on sinking the Terror of the Seven Seas (or The Beast as he referred to Bismarck). When Bismarck and Prinze Eugen left port, they sailed North around Denmark and were picked up by two British destroyers who lost them in the dark of night but radioed in their last known location. The nearest ships were HMS Prince of Whales and the WW1 era flagship, battlecruiser HMS Hood. The resulting battle in the early hours of dawn, The Battle of the Denmark Strait, saw the British open up fire from a distance of 24 miles, engaging what they believed to be Bismarck but in reality was Prinz Eugen (both ships had nearly identical silhouettes on the horizon). It was a fatal mistake that ended up with the Bismarck opening fire with her bored 15 inch guns, settling Hood with its first salvo (and knocking out his own forward range finder) and upon firing his second salvo, planted a 1700lb round into Hoods forward ammo magazine instantly blowing the ship in two. Out of a crew of 1418 only 3 survived. Bismarck meanwhile had taken a round from Prince of Whales to its forward fuel hold and was leaking engine fuel. Captain Ernst Lindemann and Fleet Admiral Gunther Lutjens decided to return to friendly waters for repairs and headed toward the German occupied port of Brest. Only one allied ship was close enough to possibly stop Bismarck - the largest and most advanced and arguably powerful ever built up to this point - the aircraft carrier Ark Royal and her antiquated WW1 Swordfish torpedo planes. The planes were made of wood and canvas and flew too slow and too low for Bismarcks anti-aircraft suite to be effective against. All but the last torpedo launched missed their target. The final torpedo hit Bismarck in its only vulnerability - its rudder. The starboard rudder jammed into the ships central propeller and punched a hole in the hull above. While flooding was minimal, Bismarck, now, could only turn in a circle. His fate was destined. In the early hours the next morning the British North Atlantic Fleet had moved in and the order to open fire was issued. From point blank range Bismarck was rittled with 15inch, 14inch, 12 inch, 6inch and 4 inch rounds - a total of 2800 shells were fired at Bismarck, 400 landed on target. Bismarck put up a valiant effort, decks burning, and at 930am on Tuesday, May 27th, 1941 Bismarcks guns fell silent. The British sent in a final torpedo run to finish Bismarck off. At 10:40am he slid silently under the waves. In recent years through expeditions to the wreck (found by Robert Ballard who found Titanic) and testimony from Bismarcks last living survivors, the history books were slightly updated. The crew scuttled Bismarck. They had been ordered before leaving Hamburg to place scuttling charges in the event that He falls into the hands of the enemy (Bismarck was state of the art, with highly advance German armor, radar and very accurate rangefinders and guns, and likely the highly sought after Enigma Machine). The dives to the wreck also included extensive surveys of the ships lower hull which clearly showed that the British Torpedos did not Pentwater Bismarcks inner hull and therefore couldn't have sunk Bismarck.

So a bit of a dramatic and tragic story about the most famous ship of the Second world war-the Bismarck, which went on its first and last voyage (like the Titanic), which ended in its death. Bismarck (KMS Bismark) - German battleship, the lead ship of the same class, was still no less famous for its brother-Tirpitz. Bismarck is one of the most legendary ships of the Second world war, as well as being the largest battleship in Europe and one of the largest in the world along with the Japanese Yamato and the American Missouri. Bismarck was launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1940. Bismarck's first (and last) campaign began on may 22, 1941. Then Bismarck, along with the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen (KMS Prinz Eugen) was to break through the Danish Strait into the Atlantic and begin to sink convoys going to Britain. The first German squadron was discovered by the British cruisers Suffolk and Norfolk (HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk) on the evening of 23 may. The British battleship Prince of Wales (HMS Prince of Wales) and the battlecruiser hood (HMS Hood) went to intercept Bismarck. During the battle, Bismarck received several hits, at the same time 5 Bismarck's volley hit directly into Hood's artillery cellars. Hood was torn in two by a massive explosion. Of the 1,477 crew members, only 3 survived. Among the dead was the commander of the British squadron Lancelot Ernest Holland. The Prince of Wales tried to continue the battle, but to no avail and soon disappeared in a smoke screen as one of the shells from Bismarck hit the command post of the Prince of Wales, thereby killing half of the officers, by the way the second shell fired from Bismarck hit the Prince of Wales, but did not explode, the British then pushed him into the sea. Bismarck had one of the generators disabled, two fuel tanks were breached, and there was a trim on the bow and a roll on the starboard side. Gunther Lutyens (commander of the German squadron) decided to lead the Bismarck to the French port of Saint-Nazaire for repairs. Prince Eugen was ordered to continue raiding. Bismarck was chased by the entire British fleet in the region. Bismarck's injuries were not very serious, but they caused Bismarck to lose one of his main advantages - speed. The British lost Bismarck several times, but due to the fact that the British intercepted a radio message sent to Bismarck, it was possible to establish the approximate location of the ship. Bismarck left little to the French Brest. Also, when approaching the coast of occupied France, Bismarck could use Luftwaffe aircraft (Luftwaffe - aviation of the Third Reich) to cover. Only compound H, based in Gibraltar, was able to detain Bismarck. This unit included the aircraft carrier Ark Royal (HMS Ark Royal). On the morning of may 26, the Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers flew to the site of the last sighting of the Bismarck. Approximately in the same area was the cruiser Sheffield (HMS Sheffield). The Swordfish pilots mistook Sheffield for Bismarck and torpedoed it. The new magnetic fuses of the torpedoes did not work, and the cruiser remained intact. After this incident, the British changed the magnetic fuses to contact ones. By evening, Sheffield had made visual contact with Bismarck and the Swordfish torpedoes were back in the air. Swadeshi was flying very low and slowly, because of this, the crews of Bismarck simply could not distinguish from the sea. The Suodfishes themselves were biplanes that were obsolete even before they were put into service. The British achieved two or three torpedo hits. One of these hits was fatal for Bimark - in an attempt to evade the torpedo, Bismarck turned to the left and because of this, the torpedo, instead of hitting the main armored belt, hit the poorly protected aft compartment and tightly jammed the rudders. By morning, orders were given to stop the cars - Bismarck was in the zone of action of German bombers, who did not give Bismarck any help. Bismarck was approached by the British battleships Rodney (HMS Rodney) and King George V (HMS King George V). Bismarck's fire was focused on Rodney, but due to the roll and inability to evade enemy volleys, accuracy was very low. After 44 minutes, all 4 towers of the Bismarck group stopped firing. In order to somehow save some of the surviving crew, after being shot by British ships, captain Ernst Lindemann, who survived the bombing, ordered the engine room to be blown up, the kingstons opened and the ship abandoned. After the fuses were installed, 9 minutes later an explosion was heard from the depths of the wounded Bismarck, which contributed to the final sinking and roll of the battleship on Board. At this point, the cruiser Dosertshire (HMS Dorsetshire), firing 3 torpedoes at the immobilized Bismarck. Bismarck went to the bottom without lowering the battle flag. Of the 2,220 crew, only 114 people were saved - 111 people were saved by the British, and 3 people by the German submarine U-74. Captain Ernst Lindemann himself, as told by the surviving sailors, did not try to make attempts to escape, but on the contrary drove away all the sailors who tried to save him, threatening to shoot (this is so for intimidation), as a result, captain Lindemann heroically went to the bottom with his ship, the last time he was seen at the stern, when he said goodbye to the surviving sailors. The ship's cat Oscar, nicknamed "Unsinkable Sam"by the British, was also rescued from Bismarck. This cat survived the sinking of 3 ships-the Bismarck itself, the SS Cossack (HMS Cossack) and the aircraft carrier Ark Royal, the same one that caused fatal damage to Bismarck, in the Achilles heel of the invulnerable battleship. By the way after a dive expedition James Cameron, it has been proven that the British torpedo and shells are unable to contribute to the sinking of Bismarck, ie breaking was not detected by torpedoes at the armored belt, but below waterlinie was exactly cut out of the side, this proves that Bismarck scuttled by the Germans themselves when they blew the bottom of the ship and opened the seacocks and not British!
