I’m curious how wet your paper is and when you use wet on wet and when you use wet on dry techniques.

Hi Kellye J, this can depend on the effect I wish to achieve. If I want a really mottled, blended wet in wet background I would wet the paper two or three times, allow the water to soak in for a minute and then add the colours. However, if you want a suggestion of some background, you need to let it dry a bit longer, so still wet but not soaking. Wet on dry is very often using within the subject and only occasionally on a background. Here is a playlist on background for you. bit.ly/3pRTYlb Hope this helps, Paul 🎨

@@TheDevonArtist thank you so much. So on this particular project, once you have the background colors of the wood, you let it dry and add the details of the bark and variations with wet on dry? Just curious if you ever wet the paper again while doing the details to allow some of the wood variations to blend together.

@@kellyej3520 With the wood, I very often add some basic details whilst the paper is still damp, not soaking wet, just for a semi-blurry effect. After which, I then work wet on dry. :-)

@@TheDevonArtist thank you very much for your responses. This helps a lot! I’m just beginning to work with watercolors and it’s helpful to know those details. I’m used to working with pencils and it’s much different! I appreciate your response and I love your tutorials!
