Dice Throne in general (my MDT is on pre-order), I think the game systems are quite amazing. It's not as simple as "I roll some dice, I do some damage. it's your turn". Each character plays SO differently, but are balanced enough that if you didn't win, it's not (always) because you had bad luck or because you lack skill. There are different symbol weights on the dice (There are 3x/2y/1z, 2x/2y/2z, 3w/1x/1y/1z, 2w/x2/1y/1z, even a 2w/1x/2y/1z), which change the way you learn to play the hero. Some are survivors (whittle down your opponent while blocking some/half/all of their damage). Some are glass cannons (do as much damage as you can because other than with cards, you aren't going to avoid any coming at you). Some try to drag the game out a little until they're ready to dish out the pain using tokens/CP/cards. Some can heal. Some get tokens that are currency to place tokens, or reroll dice, or draw cards, or gain CP, or avoid damage, or add damage, etc. Some have pets! Others get amazing card draw or CP gain, while some feel underpowered because they don't (and they're not, they just need to be played differently). The tokens are great: "This one says you're on fire/poisoned/bleeding/stunned", "These let me add or subtract damage", " I can trade 3 of these for a card". I think the game is simple (enough) and fast (enough) that if someone didn't initially like it the first time you played/taught it, it's worth trying again another time (with same or different heroes). It takes multiple plays to appreciate what this game offers. You can start with ANY of the boxes (they're standalone but mix with every other character), so grab what character set looks fun to you. I could go on, but no one's reading this anyway. 9/10, top 10 game of all time. I will say that it would've helped to have a Damage Types rule card for each deck. If it's something someone has to check the rulebook to remember, and it can fit on a card (like the chart), it should be on a card. The rest is really not as complicated as Zee made it out to be. Maybe 2-sided card with token rules that the opposite player could hold onto too would've also been neat, so they don't have to check the other player's leaflet. Release a "Booster pack" of cards for each season with special rule cards, imo.

Nice review. I haven't looked too deep in Marvel Dice Throne, but another counter to Zee's point about the boards being very similar was addressed in previous seasons subtley; such as different distribution of symbols on the dice, distribution of results (such as with straights), or having a choice of two different defend abilities. I love dice throne and taught this game very easily to new players. I don't think it's overly complex. The cards you play are color coded that let you know when you can play a card. There is a very simple chart that explains very clearly what can be defended and what can't be. Love the seeing the 9's. Great work guys.

Totally agree with you. Obviously there could be some issues teaching the game to someone who has never played a 30+ minute game before, but especially with the lighter-complexity heroes in the game, it's an easy teach. I actually think it's brilliant that you can teach the game with simple heroes and introduce those more complex mechanics in subsequent plays after they've got the basics down.

I wish the 'how to play' overview had used two heroes... It would have given us an entirely different idea of what the game actually feels like, especially showcasing the Attack/Defense interaction. Also, the ability Thor eventually activated would allow him to throw the hammer, which was unfortunate to miss! (Apologies if this turns out to be false, but I am pretty confident that it is accurate.) I loved Zee doing that segment from the perspective of someone who is new to the game though! The boards do follow a similar structure. Abilities that require similar rolls are in similar positions. The easier they are to roll, the more samey they may feel (though not always). The most special and harder to roll abilities are towards the right of the board. Even with the simpler ones, when upgraded they become more unique. It is not that different from how card games work. There are some base abilities and requirements, mixed and matched in various ways to convey flavor and support different play styles. A lot of action cards that you draw also feel very special. The differences among the heroes do depend a lot on their tokens, but the alternative would be to have the token descriptions inside the board tiles and, well, that wouldn't really look very nice, would it. The current set up is...efficient, I believe.
@christospetkidis23882 жыл бұрын
The game *can* turn REALLY complex with the timing and descriptions of all the effects, but I feel labeling it a casual game is still fairly accurate. It is a game that plays out simply and intuitively and is pretty fast, *as long as* you have figured it out first and don't need to understand how a status effect works on-the-spot. The official Facebook/discord group can really help with that! As for the luck part, I'd have liked somebody pointing out that there is a lot of dice manipulation and status effects manipulation in the game using the cards that are common across all heroes (and perhaps some hero-specific effects, depending on the hero), so there is quite a bit of strategy going into this as well. It's not just about what your dice "tell you" to activate each turn. There are some very interesting twists and turns the game can take!
@christospetkidis23882 жыл бұрын
This Marvel set as a standalone box didn't have much value for me, because it has only some of the OG MCU Avengers, only a couple of highlights from the more recent films, and a single hero representing the Spiderverse. Not my favorite approach as I'd love to be able to say I have *these* heroes which X product had presented as a group and no one is missing. Hopefully a future installation will complete more of each roster represented here to make the entire collection of MDT heroes feel more...complete in my eyes. I agree the heroes that were chosen for this were designed/translated brilliantly, and several of them may be some of the most fun and interesting DT heroes for me. And as a DT fan, I loved your enthusiasm and appreciation for the set, the presentation, and I was really happy with your overall assessment, as well as your individual takes! ^_^ You have played DT before if I'm not mistaken. @bornofashes2 жыл бұрын
They both have very satisfying thematic ties. I think the main decider is going to be dice vs cards, the ol’ input vs output randomness. Dice Throne has was to mitigate rolls, but you still start over from scratch each turn. Unmatched can still have RNG with the deck order, but you know exactly how many copies of each card are in your deck and can hold onto that linchpin card until the right moment. With dice you can get lucky and roll an ultimate every turn. With cards your abilities are preciously scarce resources.
@Ehurst012 жыл бұрын
You can't go wrong with either. They both scratch a similar itch. I haven't played dice throne with more that 2 players so I can't say how the 3 and 4 player games are. Unmatched plays well with 4. That may be something you would want to explore if player count is an issue.

Dice throne feel more like a slapping contest. Where you just see who can hit the hardest until someone falls down. I really like dice throne. But zee complaints are vaild. There are some crazy timing rules to calculate damage, and it does have 3 or 4 different types of damages. But they can be ignored until you get fimilar with the basic of the game. Sure you are learning wrong, but as long as you are having fun and you thought it was a fair fight, it doesnt really matters. Its crazy how balanced the game is for how much luck is involved.

I think Zee is spot on with dice thrones issues. I really like dice throne, and have probably played it over 50 times (partially because I have a friend that loves it and it plays well over zoom) but I’ve had some rough experiences trying to play and explain/look up rules/timing issues/calculations (luckily the rulebooks have gotten a little better). I do think it is a weird mix of what the game is asking me to do (play Yahtzee) and what it is asking from me (remember keywords and interactions and how to resolve timing issues with an order of events that involves cards and abilities and tokens and other different types of cards). I think that it did/does pull back on the thrill/fun for me that I get from other push your luck dice games (like King of Tokyo) and make even the rolling of dice feel pretty calculating and mechanical as opposed to exciting and “cinematic”. All that said, I did back this because it looked like a great implementation of the theme, and I’m looking forward to it. Great video!
@joelface2 жыл бұрын
I get your comparisons to Yahtzee and King of Tokyo because those both use the 3-roll system as well. But I don't think Dice Throne is supposed to feel like those games with extra steps. It's very much in it's own world in terms of how you play and enjoy it. The deck of cards is a huge part of the game, as is understanding your playerboard and your status effects. Knowing which cards to sell, which to save, and what to focus on for the specific hero or heroes you're up against... that's a big part of winning in this game, and it's an aspect that those other games don't have at all. It's not meant to be a party game in the same way as KoT, which ideally has about 15-second turns. Instead, you get to embody your hero for a minute or two and the dice-rolling is merely the reality-check on your your bigger plan. In any case, you're allowed to feel the way you do about the game, especially since you've played it 50 times, but just wanted to share my reaction to your comment -- hope you'll enjoy the Marvel set!
@justinwaltz79912 жыл бұрын
That’s fair, and I do enjoy it and it definitely is different than King of Tokyo. I guess my main point is that a lot of the mechanical considerations keep me from being able to ‘embody the hero’ and the dice/card draw make the strategy/tactics with a particular character during a given turn hard for me to wrap my head around, especially with some of the heroes. Probably has more to do with me than anything! Thanks for the input and reply!

And then fun and tense enough game after game. Everything makes sense, no need to know your deck by heart to figure out combos (there are some but they're obvious), no need to read much on cards, plus you only draw one per round. I find it as easy as Star Realms mechanically, that is way easier than practically all 1v1 deckbuilding games, with a lot of fun, lots of replayability with 2 or 3 boxes at least, and material that is really pleasant to manipulate. Main question mark is on the balance, not sure heroes are 100% balances already in season 1 (but again, asymetry usually means no perfect balance).

I enjoy Dice Throne, but my very least favorite part is the draw deck. The randomness of the dice is a given and expected with the "Yahtzee" underpinnings, but the decks add another layer of random that can make or break your game. I would have preferred at least a way to upgrade your powers without having to rely on random draws from a relatively thick draw deck. Why is this a concern? Hasn't CMON gone pretty deep on the X-Men roster for Marvel United? Plus, they had a bit of X-Men love with Zombicide. For non-CMON, the rumor is the next phase for Marvel Champions will be X-Men. And, Crisis Protocol has 20+ mutants many of which are X-Men.

@@VaultBoy13 The United games have a lot of content but most of it won't come to retail. Like literally 90% of it won't come to retail which is a pretty big turn off for me. I like to collect everything but I don't necessarily want to drop 300 USD on a KS to get it. There was also another Xmen mutant revolt game or something that came around in the last couple years but DT gave it a pretty bad review. They do get some support, but it's always down the road- they're clearly B-tier when it comes to product these days. And its solely because Fox had the movie rights to Xmen, not Disney.

I’ve played dice throne a handful of times and just do not have fun. The productions are out of this world, and I love the art (first thing they drew me to Wonderlands War, same artist), but the game just isn’t for me.

There’s very little luck really, there’s some very concrete strategies depending on your initial roll, never mind, it’s very rare you end up not attacking (that’s only happened to me once or twice since season 1) plus your hand is going to help you alter your rolls even more.
@VaultBoy132 жыл бұрын
@@rav3style I agree. The game offers a good amount of mitigation. And, it takes some very bad luck to not be able to attack at all. There's quite a bit of strategy to the game despite some luck around the dice rolls.

@@rav3style This game is random random random. I mean sure, you look at your roll and play the odds to make something out of the results, but it's still rolling dice. Adding the draw deck to the mix is a randomness multiplier that isn't equitable from one character to the next, due to differences in card draw rate from toon to toon. I say this as an owner of Dice Throne Season I rerolled, Season II, and Marvel. I like the game but random luck can and does absolutely **** you over at a greater than trivial rate.

I love Dice Throne and Marvel and just... the whole "Hey, play your favorite Marvel hero beating up your... favorite... Marvel... Hero?... thing just didn't really grab me. I would be interested to see something Dice Thrones Adventure style, or just generally something more villain oriented to go up against. I mean heck, they could have at least threw a "Civil War" thematic mix on there or something. I know it's a weird detail to be hung up on but it really did just make me kinda... shrug the whole thing off despite loving both franchises.
@joelface2 жыл бұрын
You can play these heroes in Dice Throne Adventures. But also... Marvel Heroes often have to fight other Marvel heroes... it's a very common thing. You can feel free to add your own flavor text to any particular battle. Maybe one is possessed by a villain, or brainwashed into thinking one of the other heroes is hurting others... who knows! :P

I dislike the art for the Dice Thrones games, I think it looks especially bad when applied to established comic book heroes, where amazing art already exists

The general consensus is that this game has amazing art. But obviously some people don't like certain things. It's definitely not amateurish, if that's what you're insinuating.

@@joelface No I just think compared to the comicbook art that exists for these superheroes, this art pales in comparison, objectively. Without that comparison, I still don't like the art but that's my subjective opinion.

@@bruceulrich1231 We could lie, I suppose. There's certainly an oversaturation of Marvel licensing in hobby gaming. @@bruceulrich1231 Haha, as someone who often enjoys games with the Mediterranean games, I get it. I agree. The character selection is the only thing making me question whether I would want to get this. I stopped watching the MCU after End Game, but by the character selection it looks like Marvel made them use characters they are trying to heavily push in phases 4 and beyond. Hopefully season 2 of this will have more popular characters, but I expect to see characters like Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk... etc..

They clearly picked characters who have abilities that would translate well into the game. How many different abilities could Cap or Hulk have that would be true to the character and still be unique from a gameplay perspective?

The Marvel characters selected are underwhelming. It seems like the designers played it too safe and wanted the MCU appeal rather than going for a unique experience. Tired of playing the same characters in every other game that comes out. Love Dice Thrones and love Marvel; hate this implementation. Seems like a cash grab more than an attempt at a fresh experience. Will be a hard pass for me.

Classic Marvel fanboy complaint, though... there are just as many Marvel fanboys saying "Why didn't they pick more common characters! These are all C-listers no one has heard of before!" But, truth is, you just wish they had more of YOUR favourite heroes. Doesn't apply to everyone else. Just you.
