Shadow's shoes are also known as air shoes, rocket shoes, and hover shoes. He probably has one leg pushing him forward, and the other is in neutral mode. He can fly with them which is acting like rocket shoes. He does have many uses for it.

Honestly I believe that Shadow’s shoes are chaos energy from shadow’s body himself translated to combustion. If u think about it, Shadow can produce energy from his body, he can throw chaos spear, basically energy coming from his body. Who knows he can uses the chaos energy in him as energy source, he would be like an huge energy source for his shoes. I believe he can use this energy to adjust the speed and the shoes translate the chaos energy in his body into combustion boosting his speed.

the front jet on the shoes could be a vent to let air into the shoes so it can blast it out allowing him to hover however i will just say the shoes are powered by chaos energy which in the sonic universe is in every living thing (with shadow having massive amounts letting him use his chaos abilities whenever and requiring the inhibitor rings) the shoes could draw of shadows natural chaos energy to power tiny fans with enough power to lift him off of the ground and the jet on the front of the shoes being an intake like i said would allow air to get into the shoes when shadow is moving forward faster than the wind

The simple Answer I came up with is chaos energy shadow pumps chaos Energy into his shoes to make him hover and the shoes only require a small amount of chaos energy to hover, to the point it doesn't affect shadow in battle however as shown in sonic generations, when boosting shadow has a cool down time, most likely because he is overloading his shoes to boost and keep up with sonic, it would also fit with shadows whole theme what makes him the ultimate is being able to use chaos energy without the emeralds so it would make sense if he used for both attack and speed

I doubt the shoes have any tech at all. First, Shadow does use both homing attack and spin dash which means he has super speed even without the shoes. I believe he usually takes a couple of steps to get his speed up before he starts skating. At a certain speed all the shoes would have to do to keep him afloat would be to funnel air downward.

Ya know, if its anything like Running Shoes from Pokemon Adventure Ruby and Saphire, he could be pressing a button with his toes to change the intensity of his speed.

I've come up with a simple solution. The rings or holes in his shoes are some special type of bi-metal or alloy. They are powered by his natural ability to absorb and direct Chaos energy or by a Chaos-drive core. The ports or vents in the back allow for air to move through, for where it then reacts with the bi-metal ring or alloy. The rings gather a charge and then through a phenomenon of repulsion, pull the air through the ring and eject it out with force. Where then the motion or amount of charge or current is then modulated by Shadow. Easist way to demonstrate is a video of mythbusters where they wrap some cardboard in foil, then apply a charge, and due to how electromagnets works, would push, or cause thrust due to difference in either pressure or repulsion due to aiming the flow downwards.
